in the Arts.

The mission of Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO) is to provide challenging, fully integrated music experiences for young musicians, which includes orchestra and ensemble performances, music education and a broad spectrum of music related activities.

In August of 2000 two ambitious local high school music students, with the help of other young musicians, their families and music teachers, created SOGO. Complete with a mission statement, budget of $30,000, rehearsal space, conductors and coaches, music, and 90 young musicians, SOGO had its first rehearsal just six weeks later. Ample energy and a fresh vision for building a student-led organization have made SOGO unique.

Now in our 23rd season, we have 135 young musicians in three orchestras with tuition of $550-$650. Tuition covers 50% of the program fees, with donations, sponsorships and grants providing the other half. There are 5 conductors, 13 Teaching Artists, and 2 part-time staff members. A board of 13 adults and 5 student musicians are responsible for overseeing the continued success of the organization and a budget of $253,697. SOGO musicians rehearse weekly at Jefferson M.S., with the season concerts presented on Nov. 6, Mar. 5, and May 21 at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts.
