Alessandro Martinez, clarinet
An accomplished clarinetist, it may surprise you that Alessandro wanted to play the oboe or bassoon. Since neither were available to him in the beginning, he figured the closest thing was clarinet. “In middle school I remember asking my teacher if I could switch to oboe, but he told me that I was too good at clarinet to switch!”
As the clarinet has become an integral part of his life, he attributes that love and his success as a musician to his private teacher, Ashley Cook, and his band directors Mr. Curley and Mr. Allison. “They have taught me a lot about music that goes beyond just my instrument and have helped me grow as a person. I am very thankful to all of them.”
Besides his involvement in school music programs, Alessandro has participated in SOGO seven years and has served on the student board for the last two years. He has also performed in All State and All Northwest groups, and this year he will be performing at the state Solo & Ensemble contest.
Alessandro chose the second movement of the Weber Clarinet Concerto No. 1 because he couldn’t stop thinking about it. He says, “There is nothing specific I want you to listen for because it would ruin the secret emotional message. Listen through your deep, innermost feelings and you will hear it.”
His plans are to go to college and pursue an engineering degree while keeping up his playing skills. When not doing his academics or music you might find Alessandro doing front handsprings around the yard!
Committed to providing very playable, great sounding instruments, within your budget.

GIVING TODAY
Watch your donation make a difference. Generous contributions by people like you who deeply care increase our effectiveness in bringing the arts to the youth of this community. Consider Monthly Giving starting at $10 or Workplace Matching Gifts where employees are rewarded for charitable giving and companies often match dollar for dollar. Along with Tribute Gifts honoring a loved one, stocks, Mutual Funds, and IRA required minimum distribution, you can impact SOGO by furthering its mission today.
LEGACY GIVING
You do not need to be wealthy to leave a legacy. Make your core values known by making a planned gift. By supporting our long-term success, you will be remembered as an influencer of the arts for children. By naming SOGO as a beneficiary in your retirement account or life insurance policy you can support SOGO without changing your will or living trust. Join us in making SOGO part of your "today" and making a planned gift for tomorrow.
We are grateful to those that have been generous in their giving. In addition, please see the Future Music Makers Scholarship Fund and our contributor pages 28 and 29, and those who have gifted SOGO with a gracious Estate Legacy Gift.
Future Music Makers Scholarship Fund
Although our fees to participate in SOGO are reasonable, they are still a barrier for many families. We believe young musicians benefit from participating in SOGO’s programs and should not be prohibitive because of economic circumstances. For that reason, SOGO is reaching out to begin building the Future Music Makers Scholarship Fund.
Children interested in joining SOGO have their family member complete a simple application form. Based on their interest and demonstrated financial need, up to half the tuition fees can be awarded. All information is kept confidential.
The Future Music Makers Scholarship Fund is supported by committed community members to prevent financial circumstances from becoming an obstacle to any young musician’s participation in SOGO’s orchestras. A robust fund will ensure that all young musicians will have equal opportunity to experience the high-quality programming SOGO offers the South Sound area.
Become a Future Music Makers Scholarship Partner today!

Cameron May Music Director and Conservatory Orchestra Conductor
Conductors
Greg Allison Artistic Director, Brass Choir Conductor, and Academy Orchestra Conductor
Greg Allison received his B.A. and M.A. in Music Education from Western Washington University where he studied trumpet with the late William D. Cole. Mr. Allison had taught instrumental music in the Olympia School District for 40 years. His bands have been chosen to perform at the State and Northwest Music Educators’ Conferences and the Western International Band Clinic.
Cameron May is Music Director of SOGO and the SPSCC Symphony Orchestra at South Puget Sound Community College. Prior to 2022, Mr. May was a full-time music professor at SPSCC, where, in addition to conducting the orchestra, he taught courses in college and career success, ear training, music fundamentals, and music theory, served as interim director of the SPSCC Jazz Band, and helped to build and launch the Associate in Music direct transfer degree.
Mr. May received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He continues to maintain his violin playing through his position as Assistant Principal Second Violin with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra. When not conducting, teaching, or playing violin, Mr. May can be found reading on his back porch, walking in the woods, or going out of his way to chase after Amtrak trains.
Mr. Allison has performed in the Northwest Wind Symphony, the 22nd Ave Dixieland Band, the Tacoma Concert Band, and the Evergreen Brass Quintet. He has been a guest adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor for state and regional festivals and conventions including the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.
He has served on the Washington Music Educator’s board of directors, managed WMEA High School and Junior AllState, and was a recipient of the WMEA Teacher of the Year for middle level education. In 2014, he was inducted into the WMEA Hall of Fame.
SOGO is a proud member of League of American Orchestras and Washington State Federation of Music Clubs.
Conductors
Jordan Goldstein Debut Orchestra Conductor (Strings)
In addition to serving as the string specialist for SOGO’s Debut Orchestra, Jordan Goldstein is the orchestra teacher at Washington Middle School and Centennial and McKenny Elementary Schools. Once a student of the Olympia school district, Mr. Goldstein has since received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Puget Sound, as well as a Master of Music in Viola Performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts.
As a violist, Mr. Goldstein has studied under Lisa Dyvig, Joyce Ramée, and Mark Braunstein and has performed with many groups throughout the Puget Sound and Chicago area, including the Olympia Symphony and Rainier Symphony. When not playing or teaching, Mr. Goldstein can be seen enjoying a cup of tea, watching old movies, or searching for a new and exciting animal fact.
Mr. Goldstein is honored to once again be back in the South Puget Sound area, giving back to the community that helped shape him and foster his love for music.
Dan Craig Debut Orchestra Conductor (Winds)
Dan Craig is the Director of Bands for the Napavine School District. He received his BA in both Music Education and Tuba Performance from Central Washington University and earned his MS in Curriculum and Instruction.
Mr. Craig is an award-winning tuba player, performing regularly throughout the region. He is a member of the Evergreen Brass Quintet, the Northwest Wind Symphony, and the SPSCC Symphony Orchestra at South Puget Sound Community College. Mr. Craig studied Tuba with Marty Erickson at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he won the Peck School of the Arts Concerto Competition as a freshman. Mr. Craig was the principal tuba for both the Wind Ensemble under Larry Gookin and the Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Nikolas Caoile while at CWU and has performed at many Low Brass Clinics and Symposiums throughout the country. Mr. Craig was the Drum Major for the CWU Marching Band and student director of the CWU Tuba and Euphonium choir.
Elizabeth Ward received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington and a Master of Musical Arts degree from Yale School of Music. Ms. Ward is a former member of the New Haven Symphony, Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra, Pennsylvania Orchestra, Philadelphia Opera Orchestra and Young Audiences Inc., of Philadelphia.
Returning to the Northwest, Ms. Ward founded the Evergreen Brass Quintet, well known for its outstanding educational presentations. As a studio teacher Ms. Ward’s students have consistently received awards on the local and national levels. Ms. Ward is Assistant Conductor of the Tacoma Youth Symphony and Conductor of the Tacoma Youth Symphony’s Brass Choir and Chamber Winds.
