SO-GO Virtual Concert Sunday, December 13, 3PM
Friends and family from near and far are invited to the FREE SO-GO virtual concert online beginning December 13!
Performances of the SOGO groups have been recorded, with each member using a click track as a guide to submit their part with their best effort. Recordings are being sent to a professional mixing and mastering studio and will come back as an amazing virtual orchestra video! The Conservatory Orchestra will present The Olympic Spirit by John Williams, which was originally written for NBC’s broadcast of the 1998 Summer Olympics. On The Olympic Spirit: "The ideals of resiliency, perseverance, and uniting around a common goal — so profoundly exhibited by the Olympics — send a powerfully uplifting message as we battle our way through this chaos.” ~ Music Director Cameron May
“We were originally going to (Continued on p2) perform this
"Counting is Very Important"
Learning to Rehearse and Record with a Click Track One benefit of rehearsing virtually is that student and professional musicians learn to be more rhythmically accurate with the use of a click track. A click track is a simple metronome “It’s good to click that goes in tempo with listen to yourself. the music. The click functions as the conductor of the recording. Performers become all the more aware of staying in time because of the rigidity of the click track.
You know how you sound, and you can compare to what it’s supposed to sound like.” ~ Henry, cello
“Creating virtual ensemble performance videos has forced me to be much more acutely aware of many facets of my playing," says trumpet professor Andrew Classen. "Especially in the areas of rhythmic accuracy, as well as dynamics and articulations, in order to make a truly balanced and artistic presentation.”
"I have learned lots regarding recording and trouble spots.” ~ Hadley, cello
Students say they have learned... "Counting is very important." "Playing with a click track is hard but rewarding once you get the quality of music you think is suitable." “I need to pay closer attention to rhythm, tempo, and tone as I play, while simultaneously trying to listen to the click-track recording.” "I have learned more about playing to a click track, which I think is pretty useful." ~ Kevin, viola

SO-GO Virtual Concert, cont'd piece last May leading into the 2020 games,” says Music Director Cameron May. “I know that the students were disappointed at not being able to work on this piece, so as I was thinking about repertoire that would work for our virtual format this fall, the length and consistency of tempo found in The Olympic Spirit made it an ideal candidate."
