POINT, LINE AND PLANE
Tangram squares Tangram squares are an ancient puzzle that was invented in China and later spread all over the world. It consists of seven triangular shapes called ‘tans’ which are arranged to form specific shapes. This idea has been used in the point line and plane model.
Karuizawa Museum Complex The Karuizawa MuseQum Complex is inspired by the origami folding practiced in Japan. The origami style along with the architect’s modernistic approach is harmonized by the sharp ridge like lines used. In the P/L/P model I have taken inspiration of the folding style from this structure.
P O I N T , L I N E A N D P L A N E M O D E L
The point line and plane model was made with reference to origami paper folding and also the tangram puzzle. It can be said that the tangram pieces join together to make folds like that of origami as seen in the Karuizawa Museum Complex.
MASS
Bhaja caves 2 bc The Bhaja or Bhaje caves are rock cut cave temples located in Maharashtra, India. These date back to the 2nd century BC and are associated with Buddhism. The caves represent the feel of mass and volume, it also can be used as a place of refuge and shelter from rain and cold weather. I find the caves really beautiful in the aspect that they are such exquisitely carved out considering the age it was built in. The sketches represent ideas that I have taken forward to the mass exercise from this precedent.
bunkers along the Swiss border. The bunkers here are very simple with straight lines and cuts and it blends in the environment perfectly to camouflage. I liked the aspect of bunkers primarily being to hide and be safe from enemy attacks, thus the feeling of being safe associated with mass was something that I explored.
M A S S D R AW I N G
In the final Mass drawing made with charcoal is based on the precedent research of the Bhaja caves and bunker architecture. The drawing represents a sort of transition from the past to the present. This is evident in drawing where there is a transition from the arched Gothic like spaces to the simple plane structures.
MASS COLL AGE In class after the mass presentation we experimented with collaging our work to discover certain design aspects that could be used in our further design works. I collaged my work based on random selection process but I feel that there is always a subconscious program associated that drives our intuition.
FRAME AND INFILL
miami art museum The Miami art museum closely represents the frame and Infill structure. I was particularly interested in the plants used in the building to create a micro-climate that would reduce the overall expenditure on energy used to cool the building. The plants are twined around the columns and this aspect was particularly interesting for my design approach.
Casa Sayrach The Casa Sayrach is a modernisme building in Barcelona which represents the art Nouveau culture. I have taken inspiration of the twirling elements in the upper portions of the columns and also the stairs. The fluidity in the architecture intrigued me and I thought of creating something similar in the infill of my project.

As mentioned in the above description I have created this infill based on specific portions of the precedents stated and is also exemplified in the sketches above. However the frame is a traditional combination of cuboids joined at the base.

Sculptures
Herring island though it is a man made island offers the feeling of being in a typical bush land. The most interesting part was the presence of several sculptures that were spread all over the island (as shown in the map) not all being in the regular circulatory path thus letting the patron discover gradually. Apart from that the island is covered with vegetation in most parts but the center, which has a lawn area. I have chosen a portion of the lawn area because it is flat and my design requires a flat surface to be built on.

Manhattan bridge of houses The Manhattan bridge of houses by Stephen Holl is an ornate collection of houses on a bridge but has a passage in the pedestrian level making it like a series of public courtyards allowing seamless movement. The houses though it may appear to be of the same volume is different in character. House of the doubter, house of the man with different opinions and house of the decider are some of the names and the names do justice in representing the character. The association of character with architecture inspired me to look at the secrets project in the same manner.
Ronchamp chapel The Ronchamp chapel or the Notre Dame du Haut by Le Corbusier influenced me to explore the flow of light within the structure. The light coming into the interior through the below shown openings is just fascinating. This being natural light the effect change with time thereby instilling a character of dynamism within. I really wanted natural light to play a part in my project, thus have taken inspiration from the Ronchamp Chapel.
CONCEPTICLE In the concepticle model I have tried to inculcate the tectonics explored in the P/L/P model along with the play of light researched in the Ronchamp chapel. I also tried to introduce the above, below and on-ground aspects in the model. This may not appear to have successfully evolved into the secrets project but the idea did.

audio transmission
Sculptures
There will be an audio transmission from the sculptures to the interior (underground) of the structure creating an effect of experiencing the outside world from the underground. I wanted to recreate the feeling of being trapped in the underworld, to be able to hear the world in darkness but the world will be deaf to your words. Or it could be a secret listening space.
Physical model
The Final Physical model is made of balsa wood and foam core. I have made an underground level which is able to be seen with a portion of the on-ground section detachable as shown in the images on the left. The openings in the on-ground portion is placed right behind the walls making natural light to be the guiding path in the design.
The en ing th the sta dergro the ab cially i somet attract
ntrance will be amongst trees thus hidhe sides and will guide people towards airs. When finished experiencing the unound space, one can sit in the sides or bove ground covered portion. It is espeintriguing for children because there is thing to be discovered and will definitely t the inquisitive ones.
narrative Exploring through the bush you discover a set of stair leading to an underground space. You are adventurous so you take it. A chamber with a lot of openings on the ceiling, through which people are looking at you, someone makes a funny face, you wonder why. You move forward, you hear laughter but there is no one, someone just said “thats a massive sculpture but why and who? Its dark, there is light coming from behind a wall so you move towards that and again darkness but light from behind another wall. There are more voices and sounds now, you identify the sound to be of dry leaves being crushed. You see someone sitting under a opening in the ceiling, that person laughs. You think of asking a question but no. Then you see another set of stairs leading to a door that has a glowing frame, you go up and out into the world. There is a smile on you now, you go back around and in again.
The above ground portion can be used to walk on and also sit. The openings will be covered with glass thus will behave like a mirror as the inside is dark. This will also mean that people from the underground will be able to see outside but not vice versa. Further the sound of people walking will add to the underground experience.
The above ground portion is used for sitting purposes with places full and semi-covered.
This portion as seen is the major covered portion providing shelter in the above ground to serve as a place for relaxing or even to take refuge from unexpected rain. Towards the end of this space will be the store and technical rooms. This space can also be used as a stage for small performances.
This image shows the exit from the underground portion, the door frame here is a transparent letting light into the underground space (staircase). The door is hinged to ground and is one directional and can be accessed from inside only. Upon exiting through this door, there will be a momentary unease in the eyes caused by the bleaching of the rod cells in the retina.
The major above ground sheltered portion seen from outside. As mentioned it is primarily designed to be a shelter and has the technical store rooms at the back but can be used in a multitude of ways like a stage in events.
UNDERGROUN
The entrance stairs lead the user to the underground space, at the end of the stairs there is light from the multiple openings but will eventually get darker on proceeding. Before entering, there is a view of the exit which will create a subconscious estimate of the time to be spent inside but will eventually exceed.
ND EXPERIENCE
There are openings right above certain individual sitting places and also behind walls to how the path. Further there is also audio being played live from various locations in the island. These places can be also used by children to play hide and seek, thus identified by children to be secret.
Finally the transparent framed door that light the stairs and also instills the feeling of the secret being revealed. The user does not know where the door will lead to but will go through them to explore. Metaphorically it is the transcending to the world from the underworld through this magical doorway.

Reflections Design Studio earth being the first in the line of architecture studios was a phenomenal experience. The initial experimentations on P/L/P, mass and frame and infill was undertaken with design reflections from precedent research, from the Internet and also from Melbourne. This benefited us because it created an idea of the zeitgeist based on the topic researched, thus paved a path for a successful design approach. In my design approach I tried to bring forward materiality and the use of light as a central theme to my project. I was looking at the shadows, the reflections and also having the design to bring light into the volume through openings. Further, I really liked the tutor rotation aspect because it provided a fresh perspective into the design approach being considered and also constructive feedback was given. Also the guest lecture series and specifically the one by the Albert Mo from Architects EAT was very inspirational, it was there I was intrigued to experiment with light being the guiding path in architecture. To conclude Earth was a phenomenal experience bringing about a range of different perspectives and architectural knowledge.
