Crafts as a Hobby VS as a Business
As long as your arts and crafts business consistently has a net income, you don't have to worry about the distinction between being a business or a hobby when writing off your expenses directly against your income. Additionally, if you haven't started making a profit in the first two years of running your arts and crafts business, you need to go back to the drawing board and figure out why. 10
Types of Businesses If you want to start a business, you must decide whether you want your business to be: * a Sole Trader or Sole Proprietor * a Partnership * a Close Corporation (From 1 May 2011, no new Closed Corporations can be requested or conversions from company to Closed Corporations allowed. However existing entities can continue to operate). * a Company

Artist Agent
BUSINESS
Represent artists to secure them work and gallery space.
POSSIBILIES
An artist agent is the same as any other industry agent. You simply represent the talents or skills of an individual or group of individuals. Remuneration is by way of a commission charged on work sold; generally the commission rate is between 10 and 20 percent of the total selling value of the art. Why would an artist seek to be represented by an agent? There are many reasons why artists would need and require professional representation, including greater exposure and recognition, negotiation experience, privacy,
AND CRAFTS
IN THE ARTS SECTOR: marketing abilities, contacts and various other resources that may not be available to the artists themselves. If you are considering becoming an artist’s agent, you will definitely need the above-mentioned skills and have to be prepared to research the art industry in great depth. This type of business does have a very steep learning curve. With proper preparation, working as an artist agent can be a very rewarding profession, both financially and personally. 12
http://www.entrepreneur.com/businessideas/art-auctions
Art Auctions Every home in North America features some sort of art as decoration. The market for art is enormous and continues to grow as our population expands. Starting an art auction and liquidation sales service is a great way to become your own boss. There are thousands of artists who have works that they cannot, or do not have the ability to sell. Why not sell it for them? You can advertise the art auctions and liquidation sales in local newspapers or online and start making money right away. Start by visiting art schools and associations so you can begin to market services to artists who want to sell their works.
Once you have a few hundred works of art committed, you can hold the first art auction or sale. You will need to rent a temporary location for your 'one-day art sale,' and good locations include hotel ballrooms or banquet facilities. Room rental may not even cost any money providing you can convince the hotel manager that there will be potential food and drink concession sales. The rest is straightforward; hold the first art auction or sale. You do not need to be an auctioneer to start and operate this type of business, just wear formal clothes for a professional appearance. Once you have perfected the business locally, you can duplicate the process and hold art auctions and sales across the country. 13
10 Reasons Why You Should Do Hand Crafts as a Hobby: 1) Stress reliever 2) Self-esteem booster 3) Give hand made gifts 4) Share your talent 5) Humbling 6) Satisfaction when completing a task 7) Learning a new skill 8) Spend time with family and friends 9) Create memories 10) Be creative 14
The craft and hobby industry is booming, reaching the $30 billion mark in the U.S. alone. Online resources and market places like Etsy have made it incredibly easy for almost anyone to turn a hobby or creative passion into a business. But with so many of these businesses popping up daily, it can be a challenge to make one really stand out. Still, Anne-Marie Faiola, a former correctional officer, has managed to build not just one, but two successful handmade businesses, Bramble Berry and Handmade Beauty Box. Both businesses were inspired by Faiola’s passion for soap making, which started when she was just 16 years old. During her years as a correctional officer, she began selling her handmade soap. And she
enjoyed small business http:// ownership so much that she smallbiztrends.com/2015/02/ decided a career change faiola-bramble-berry-handmadewas in order. beauty-box.html 15
Today, as people face job losses, salary cuts, or other economic woes, it’s worth examining whether or not you can do something extraordinary: make a living and support your family solely by the efforts of your home craft business. It sounds like a fantasy—but can it become a reality? Yes and No. There is something like 115,000 craftspeople in the United States (numbers vary from 106,000 to 126,000), and 22 percent of them are entirely supported by their craft business. Yes, that fantasy can become a reality. The benefits of supporting your family from a home craft business are enormous. No commute. Flexible hours. Creative freedom. No bosses. No office politics. More time with family. The list goes on and on. http://www.craftsreport.com/beginning-business/68-familypart1.html 16
However, not all crafts are suitable for turning into a successful business, especially in a somewhat unstable economy. This dream of supporting a family through a craft hobby is frequently laced with a heavy dose of unrealistic expectations about the craft’s money making potential. So, how can you tell if your particular craft will support a family? We make hardwood drinking mugs—a business that has supported our family of four for the past 15 years. How do we do this? By practicing the tips outlined below. Find a niche Remember that old expression, “find a niche and fill it”? Never is this more true than in the craft industry. This will probably be the single most enormous hurdle to overcome. Can you find that empty niche and create a product to fill it? This is so hard to do because people often focus on making crafts that they themselves like, without considering either (a) What the competition is for that particular genre, or (b) How many others share that interest. Sometimes a person becomes so taken with his or her own particular craft product that they either won’t do the necessary market research to determine if their product is saleable, or they ignore what their market research tells them. Remember this: In order to make a living from your crafts, you must provide what your customers want, not merely what you like making. I’m not saying you shouldn’t make what you love, just that an honest appraisal of your marketability is important. 17

Expressing our creativity, enjoying a pastime activity, or creating some thoughtful gifts for our friends and family are some of the various reasons that we do handcrafts. There is however, one powerful reason why we do it. It is for the healing and nurturing effects of handcrafting. I have used textile handcrafting to accompany me through some really tough and challenging times in my life: from managing a chronic pain caused by a physical injury in winter 2012, to healing from the suffering and death of loved ones. And I have also used it to accompany me through my own search of meaning and purpose. Through all these experiences I intuitively developed some mindful methods that I can count on every time I need to tap into my inner calm and to seek clarity. The result was remarkable and really humbling.

Walter Whall Battiss (6 January 1906 - 20 August 1982) A South African artist, who is generally considered to be the foremost South African abstract painter and known as the creator of the quirky "Fook Island" concept. Born into English Methodist family in the Karoo town of Somerset East, Battiss first became interested in archaeology and tribal art as a young boy after moving to Koffiefontein in 1917. In 1919 the Battiss family settled in Fauresmith where he completed his education, matriculating in 1923. In 1924 he became a clerk in the Magistrates Court in Rustenburg. His formal art studies started in 1929 at the Witwatersrand Technical College (drawing and painting), followed by the Johannesburg Training College (a Teacher’s Diploma) and etching lessons. Battiss continued his studies while working as a magistrate’s clerk, and finally obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at University of South Africa at the age of 35. 20
Baptists was a founding member of the New Group a loose friendship of recognised contemporary European and American artists. He was unique among them, in the sense that he was from what were then regarded as the colonies, and also in that he had not studied in either Europe or North America. In fact in 1938 he visited Europe for the first time. The following year in 1939 he published his first book, The Amazing Bushman. His interest in rock art had a very profound impact on his ideas, regarding San painting as an important art form. He was also influenced by African cultural Ndebele beadwork and generally by pre-Islamic cultures and calligraphy. In 1949 he befriended Picasso who would have an influence on his already quirky style. He visited Greece in 1966-1968 and the Seychelles in 1972, which inspired his make-believe Fook Island. Battiss published nine books, wrote many articles and founded the periodical "De Arte". He taught art at Pretoria Boys High School from 1936 for most of the next 30 years and at the Pretoria Art Centre, of which he was the principal from 1953-58. He also taught at UNISA where he became Professor of Fine Art in 1964 and retired in 1971. In 1973 he was awarded a honorary degree D.Litt et Phil. ((Doctor of Literature and Philosophy) ) from UNISA. In 1981 he donated all his work to the newly opened "Walter Battiss Museum" in his birthplace of Somerset East. 21

A new collaboration between homeware retailer @Home and the custodians of artist Walter Battiss’s legacy brings a new dimension to the question: “But is it art?”
For Eduard du Plessis, founder of the Walter Battiss Company, the answer is an unequivocal “yes”. Nor is the concept a new one, he points out: Tretchikoff’s “merchandised” art was the first offering available in South Africa and William Kentridge’s 2010 collaboration with Illy resulted in imminently collectable espresso cups.

Rococo Period—also known as Late Baroque 18th Century Artistic movement and style Includes: Painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design, decoration, literature, music and theatre.
Developed in Paris, France as a reaction against the grandeur.
https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Rococo 34
Rococo artists and architects used a more jocular, florid, and graceful approach to the Baroque. Their style was ornate and used light colours, asymmetrical designs, curves, and gold. Unlike the political Baroque, the Rococo had playful and witty themes. The interior decoration of Rococo rooms was designed as a total work of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings.
35
Quintessentially Rococo artists include Jean-Honore Fragonard, Franรงois Boucher, Jean-Antoine Watteau and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

Cost structure is an important area of business to understand due to its wide reach across the entirety of the business supply cycle; from a product/service conception (transactional costs, market research) to its sale. Whether you’re a cost-driven or value-driven business, keep a constant analysis running within your company to balance the different types of cost within your cost structure. Thus you can ensure you are operating at best value, and can pass that value on to your customers. 40
Business Advice
Why is it important to keep records? Send us your business related question and we may answer it on this page‌
You must keep records that will enable you to prepare complete and accurate tax returns if you are involved in a business. You may choose a system of recordkeeping that is suited to the purpose and nature of your business. These records must clearly reflect your income and expenditure. This means that, in addition to your permanent books of account or records, you must maintain all other information that may be required to support the entries in your records and tax returns. Paid accounts, cancelled cheques and other source documents that support entries in your records should be filed in an orderly manner and stored in a safe place. For most small businesses, the business chequebook is the prime source for entries in the business records. It is advisable to open a separate bank account for your business so that you do not mix your private and business expenses. http://www.entrepreneurmag.co.za/advice/starting-a-business/start-up-guide/taxbasics-for-business-owners/ 41
Send us your Art questions and Johanna Prinsloo from Artkat Online Art Studio may answer your questions, in our next issue‌

Q: What advice can you give me for using charcoal?
A: 1) Experiment with charcoal first. 2) Find something to draw. 3) Create different tone values 4) Create different textures. 5) Have fun.
QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY JOHANNA 43
Crafts Q: What are the problems associated with quenching hot metal clay? A: What are the problems associated with quenching hot metal clay? If you want to refire, enamel or solder on a piece of metal clay that has been quenched, you may find that moisture has got trapped in the metal. When you heat it again, especially if you heat it fast, the moisture turns to steam and may cause a blister on the surface. You need to dry the piece thoroughly if you have quenched the metal following the initial firing. It is also important to remember that you should not quench a piece which has glass or stones as part of the design. The sudden change in temperature from the firing to the cold water may cause shock and the stone or glass could be damaged or break entirely. Leave your piece to air cool, it should only take a few minutes 44
Q What is PMC A: Precious Metal Clay (PMC) consists of microscopic particles of silver or gold suspended in an organic binder to create a pliable material with a consistency similar to modelling clay. PMC can be worked in the fingers and with simple tools to create a vast range of forms and surfaces unobtainable or laborious with traditional metalwork techniques. When it is heated to a high temperature, the binder burns away and the metal particles fuse to form solid metal that can be sanded, soldered, coloured and polished like conventional material.

Mondli Kunene Vereeniging ~ Gauteng
I am a 29 year old self-taught Visual Artist, born in Soweto (Emndeni) and raised in Vaal and I am currently residing in Vereeniging. I started painting in the 8th grade using watercolours as my medium until I met the Late Speelman Mahlangu (Prolific South African Visual Artist) and he introduced me to oil paints due to the potential he saw in me. I have exhibited in the ABSA L’Atelier and Sasol New Signatures. My work resonates around social contentious issues that primarily affect the African diaspora and the world at large. I communicate the above-mentioned ideas within my pieces in a manner that is also informative to the viewer.

Title: “All that Glitters is Gold (2014); In this piece I am depicting a young Bangladeshi man who fends for his family, by scraping sludge from drainage systems of Goldsmiths, in hope of finding traces of gold that will later be sifted and cleaned from the sludge then melted and resold to the Goldsmiths again.

Title: “My Vaderland se Gat, Kuse Mzansi la” The title is controversial; but the meaning of the artwork’s message is not. Instead I am talking about how contradictory our country is because, if we say S.A belongs to everyone who lives in it—then why aren’t we helping the white South Africans that have fallen from grace, because they were in power and now are homeless. I am also talking about the realities of today’s social ills in S.A, e.g. the vandalism by nyaope addicts and the fact that black South Africans are now in positions of power and that is all that is what homeless white South Africans have to wake to. The moral of the painting is that regardless of your colour, as a South African you must seize the opportunities available in the present to avoid being in the dire situation of being homeless and begging.
Title: “Where There is Water, There’s Hope” They say in South Africa we are free but I disagree, because freedom is having adequate sanitation within the confinements of the comfort of your own home,. But to share a single tap in a village is not freedom. In the painting I created a drop of water, which signifies HOPE, Hope, that with the water from that very single tap children will bath drink, and be nurtured, to grow strong and go to school, to be educated and come back to alleviate the problems faced in the communities that they are from. 52

Advocate Louise Barretto has been elected as the new chairperson of the Clover Aardklop National Arts Festival, presented from 6 to 10 October in Potchefstroom, at a recent meeting of the board of directors. Barretto is taking over the reigns from Dr Steve Booysen, after a term of 5 years. As a dynamic leader he was instrumental in various accomplishments and new developments at the festival, including a long-term contract with Clover as the name sponsor of the festival. According to Booysen, former CEO of Absa, it was an honour to serve the arts and Afrikaans in this capacity. He believes the board of directors will continue to implement innovative strategic changes under the efficient leadership of Barretto to ensure the sustainability of the festival as a leading Afrikaans festival.
Louise is passionate about creating opportunities for the diverse and talented artists in South Africa. “
As a board member for the past six years she is not a newcomer to Clover Aardklop and has many fresh ideas to build on Aardklop’s contribution to initiate programme content to the benefit of the country as a whole. She has proven her commitment to and passion for the arts by investing valuable time and energy in the festival, in spite of a demanding professional career. Clover Aardklop and the Afrikaans arts community are in good hands.

In an official ceremony held in front of the white-gabled house in Paulet Street, Somerset East in 1981, Walter Whall Battiss bequeathed his collection of his own art works to "the people of Somerset East and South Africa." The two storied house with its long shaded veranda was built as an English officers' mess in the early days of Somerset, and once belonged to the Battiss family, who ran it as the Battiss private Hotel between 1914 and 1917, when the recession which followed the First World War forced them to close, and move to Koffiefontein. It lies under the benign gaze of the Boschberg Mountain, and is a familiar landmark in this small Karoo town. It still functions as an art museum housing the largest collection of Battiss's work in Africa, and was fully restored when serious deterioration of the building was identified in 1999. http://www.somerset-east.co.za/listing/walter_battiss_art_museum 74

Lisa Fittipaldi Disability: Visually Impaired Lisa not only learned to paint after losing her sight, she wrote a book about it. Her inspiring use of colour and her ability to tell which colour she is using just by feeling the texture of the paint are just two remarkable facets of her story.

The Eastern Cape is one of the most culturally diverse and interesting regions in South Africa today. It is also home to many skilled artists and craftspeople. The catalogue of Eastern Cape Craft is a project which aims to bring exposure to the local crafters of the Eastern Cape and showcase their wares to the broader local and international community.
The diversity of the craft produced in the Eastern Cape is astounding and ranges from historic indigenous items of Xhosa culture (traditional ceramics, woodcarving, grassweaving, beadwork and attire) to contemporary beadwork, spinning and knitting, glass blowing, wire work and sewing.
