ACCI President on the Legacy Projects

ACCI Executive Commitee Members

In this brief but exciting interview, the President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, CON., SAN spoke about the Legacy Projects embarked upon by the Chamber, the vision as well as their sustainability. He spoke with LUBEM GENA.

Excerpts: People are marvelled at the developments in this chamber. What can you tell us about the Legacy Projects developed by the Chamber? We have taken total control of the ACCI complex and we are developing certain legacy projects based on the three anchor points. The first in the central spine is the development of our ultra modern office complex, the Convention Centre as well as the convention ground. All these involve the 6-storey building office complex, 3, 200 sqm convention centre with several Business to Business (B2B) rooms, VIP lounge, Dele Oye hall as well as fully airconditioned central auditorium designed for programs, be it international or local conferences, fairs, conventions, meetings, shows etc. Also, we are developing the Business Entrepreneurship Skills and Technology (BEST) centre 1, 2 and 3 which is the skills development aspect of our activities. We are also fast tracking activities on the leisure side, which are the restaurants, cafeteria as well as the lounge to service both members, visitors, training participants, partners and stakeholders. As for the commercial part we are developing hotels and an entertainment area located on a 10 hectares piece of land, this we are projecting development of two to three different classes of hotels to service the convention centre and the city in general. Finally, we have the Business Development Park which is meant for commercial development. The proposed 10 blocks of commercial buildings are to service our members and their business associates.

12

ACCI Story

What was really the vision for establishing these structures in ACCI? Well, the vision is to create a mini commercial city and the model is derived from sutton city in Johannesburg-South Africa where it is convenient for you to do your business, hold your meetings, live there by staying in the hotel facilities, attend your conferences, do your shopping and lots more in the same area. We think this is good for the city. In fact, every modern city should have a commercial centre within the city. That is our vision and we have vigorously pursued it. Talking about sustainability, how would you want to see these projects sustained? The way and manner these projects are crafted makes for self-sustainability. But of course, it still needs the support of the authorities from the chamber to perform optimally. This can be achieved by putting in certain specific institutions to manage it. In this case the Abuja Trade Centre (ATC) should manage the central spine of the commercial city. We have well established commercial partners who will provide maintenance services and do other things to ensure that the facilities are updated and optimally running and well kept, programmed and made to function efficiently. This way, it can generate income and sustain itself. We are driving technology into the projects to take care of security and some of the other services that we provide like other commercial activities.

ACCI Story 15

For a Grade A chamber of commerce, ACCI is supposed to play the big brother role in West Africa bearing in mind that you work closely with the West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI). How well is ACCI doing this? We work closely with the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI) and this has also given us the privilege of a mentorship relationship with other chambers of commerce in Nigeria and other West African Countries to help them replicate what we are doing in their various chambers of commerce. Of course we hand hold them and mentor them in many areas. Our joy will be to see that they all become like ACCI. This chamber was given an international recognition in Brazil, could you please shed more light on this development.

ACCI has contributed greatly towards development of the Nigerian Economy - Director-General The Director General of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Ms Victoria Akai in this exclusive interview with Chamber Telegraph crew emphasised the relevance of the chamber to the overall national economic development. She also predicted that, the Chamber will continue to grow from strength to strength.

The chamber has been carrying out some capacity building programmes through the BEST Centre and last year 2019 we competed in the World Chamber Congress best education project competition. Fortunately, we

came out as the best project in Africa. And we were nominated as the top 5 education projects in the world. How did the chamber receive this news? It was received with a lot of excitement. It was amazing. It was actually a pleasant surprise. When we went to Brazil, we were treated very well, honoured and recognised. In fact, we gained more partnerships and support from other international organisations. Based on the track records of achievements on ground, where do you hope to see ACCI in the next 5-10 years? In the next 5-10 years, I see the chamber running better than it is of course; working closely with government; contributing significantly to capacity building; helping our members to expand their businesses; bringing investors to Nigeria and generally contributing positively to the overall economic development of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. In the course of doing these, we will be able to contribute significantly towards the development of Abuja as a prefered investment destination.

tInterviewed by LUBEM GENA Kindly tell us the vision of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry and how it is actualising it. The vision of the chamber is to be the foremost Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria. ACCI is accomplishing this through its secretariat and its 4-centres. With this structure, the Chamber is achieving its primary goals and objectives of improving the businesses of its members by providing opportunities in the areas of networking, increased local and international exposure, knowledge sharing, advocacy and alternative dispute resolution amongst other benefits. The centres are, the Business Entrepreneurship Skills and Technology (BEST), Abuja Trade Centre (ATC), Dispute Resolution Centre (DRC) and Policy Advocacy Centre (PAC). We have also added another one known as the ACCI Multipurpose Cooperative Society (ACS). How impactful are these centres to the Nigerian economy?

support that it requires to thrive, create employment opportunities and make profit and ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s GDP. We also facilitate local and foreign investments to Abuja and Nigeria in general. We carry out business match-making, advocate for policies to favour the business community in Nigeria and specifically for our members. We also carry out capacity building activities in vocational training, work force skills training, business skills training amongst others. Some of our activities are carried out in collaboration with partners which include the government, international organisations, national agencies and private companies that have lines of support. Also, we have the Dispute Resolution Centre (DRC) to resolve commercial disputes. Rather than go to court and spend so much money and time, it is better to come to the DRC and have your disputes resolved. We attend to both international and local trading partners.

The centres contribute to the Nigerian economy by ensuring that the business community receives the 16

We have done tremendously well - Dr. Anene Dr. Johnson Somadina Anene, the Vice President (Mines) of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) in this exclusive interview with our Editor-In-Chief, LUBEM GENA explains the factors that accounted for the massive infrastructural and organisational development recorded in the Chamber. Excerpts:

promote investments.

Since the inauguration of the present Executive Committee at the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Legacy Projects took the centre stage alongside other things. What is responsible for this drive?

Aside from that, our Dispute Resolution Centre (DRC) will also be there to intervene in the settlement of commercial disputes among business partners. These activities and those by the other Centres in the Chamber have already added and will continue to add significant value to the economy of the nation.

In what specific terms are these projects going to add to the development of the Nigerian economy? In so many ways. Some organisations have started taking office space in the complex. So, it is providing facilities to aid business activities and economic development in the country with particular reference to Abuja. And also, you heard about the Abuja Trade Centre (ATC) that is really working very hard to develop activities, support and

“ 30

ACCI Story

Also, give us a brief on the other Centres in the Chamber such as the Policy Advocacy Centre (PAC) and the Business Entrepreneurial Skills and Technology (BEST) Centre. How impactful are they? They are up and running even though they are still at infancy. Of course they have made significant impact to the chamber activities and the economy in general. You can see the remarkable progress we have made within these couple of years. People at the helm of affairs in the Centres are doing very well but I want to encourage them to do more. I am sure that with the crop of people we have in both management and auxiliary levels, I am assured and convinced that we will achieve greater results in the near future.

What particular area will you want partners or stakeholders to support the chamber to get to the next level? We need assistance in the area of manpower support and development, funding, technical assistant, basic equipment and know-how as well as financial support that we will be able to offset the cost of running some of these programmes.

How would you want the Oragnised Private Sector (OPS), business community and the diplomatic circle of friends to use these facilities to advance their businesses in Nigeria? What we want is for them to patronise the Centres and key into their respective activities, programmes and projects such as business development, trade fairs, trade facilitation, trade information etc. That is for the ATC. It is commitment and will power to deliver these results and projects. It is not just everybody that is able to conceive an idea that will be able to put it down and nurture it to fruition or manifestation. The current Executive Committee led by Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, CON., SAN has shown capacity to deliver. That is why we are able to come out with these projects within a record time of two years. Another thing that is important is prudence in the management of resources. It is the kind or projects that can take some organisations billions of naira and end up been abandoned. But we are able to deliver it with the lean purse at our disposal. I want to congratulate the President of the Chamber, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, the entire Executive Committee that gave the support and the entire membership that gave the support that led to the realisation of these projects.

the DRC, we want them to key into our trade disputes resolution mechanisms. As for PAC, they are doing a lot in the area of advocacy for business people, government policies and economic decisions. BEST on the other can be approached for training and capacity building, skill acquisition and vocational training. So, the Centres are on ground to help businessmen and investors. They can immensely benefit from these services.

ACCI to partner EU Mission on waste-to-wealth programme, other activities

NACCIMA, ACCI discuss ways to reduce disaster risk on private sector with UNDRR

As part of efforts to generate wealth from waste materials, the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and European Union Mission in Nigeria and West Africa have commenced deliberations to create sustainable impact in the sector.

The meeting convened to discuss issues of disaster risk reduction from the private sector perspective took place today with many stakeholders drawn from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Federation of West African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI), Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) amongst others in attendance.

Both parties agreed to this today, Thursday, 16th January, 2020 when the ACCI President, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, CON., SAN received Mr. John Taylor, Minister Counsellor/Head of Trade and Economics Section of European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS in the Chamber.

and that has accounted for the problem we have. “But as a Chamber, we have pioneered efforts in doing a lot in the sector. We organized a Waste-to Wealth Business Forum and also created a Trade Group in the Chamber to aid players in the sector to discuss issues of common concern.

The meeting discussed ways to deepen relations between the Union and ACCI and how to carry joint activities in the Waste-To-Wealth sector among others. In his address Prince Kayode commended the Union for reposing confidence in the Chamber and approaching it to fast-track actions in the sector to tap into the inherent opportunities.

“I therefore call on you to support us most especially as it is also one of your country specific target. We can start as a pilot project and replicate it either in the 6 geopolitical zones or 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, he noted.

He said there is so much wealth to be generated in the line business bearing in mind that recyclable items such as worn out tyres, batteries, glass, scrap metals, wood and saw dust, electronic waste among others abound in the country. He emphasized on the need for EU to support a privatesector led initiative that will help in smoothly carrying out such activities which he said will generate employment, create wealth, clean the environment as well as add value to Gross Domestic Product (GDP)of the country. “The private sector has to lead the way in this initiative and we have to also sensitize government to key into it. As of today, policies around this area are not functional

risk mitigating elements in their business plans as a sure way of guarding against unforeseen circumstances that often lead to loss of lives, investment and sources of income.

Also speaking, Mr. Taylor said he was aware of the efforts of the Chamber in this regard and is ready to lend the support of the EU so as to add credibility into it. Towards achieving the target, he said EU will facilitate a Businesses Forum where he will mobilize a minimum of 15 countries and high powered EU commissioners to participate in same. “I can see that if we do this together, the huge potentials here will be harnessed. It is a big business that will help to manage the waste of the large population of the country. “In April 27-28th we will organize this event and I will mobilize high powered EU Commissioners to attend and to bring 15 countries or companies to take part in the expo”, Mr. Taylor said. The meeting also discussed other areas of upcoming possibility of partnership.

In a message, the FEWACCI/NACCIMA President, Hajia Saratu Iya Aliyu, emphasized the need for all hands to be on the deck in the task of mitigating disaster risks. She also said the Dialogue was timely and has the tendency to generate the required impetus needed to handle such challenges when they occurred. According to her, as the foremost Organized Private Sector (OPS) organization in the sub-region, FEWACCI is committed to employing various means of enabling and promoting a business-friendly environment that is void of risks and aims to develop the Private sector. Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, CON., expressed the readiness of the OPS in Nigeria under the NACCIMA umbrella to embark of collaborative activities, actions, programmes and projects that would lead to training, empowerment, advocacy and an enhanced public policy direction on the subject matter.

Prince Kayode made a case for UNDRR to make use of the Policy Advocacy Centre (PAC) and Business, Entrepreneurial Skills and Technology (BEST) Centre in order to actualize the set objectives pointing out that, it will lead to an assured shared prosperity. Mr. Julius Kalubi who presented the UNDRR message and policy framework assured on measures to be taken to ensure that the project is actualised for the overall benefit of the society. During the discussion session, both Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, Provost of BEST Centre/NACCIMA National Legal Adviser, Mr. Olawale Rasheed, Mr. Peter Esime, former DG of NACCIMA stressed that hence ACCI is prepared and actually have mechanism in place to embark on such a mission, it should be supported with the required capacity.
