THE REVOLUTIONN By Jane Ayokhai The revolution is coming, Every new day, we rise From our dissatisfaction. Q. Can we meet you, Ma? My Name is Victoria Akai, I am the Director of the BEST Centre. Q. Tell us about ACCI, BEST Centre and #BEST1000. BEST was established to provide training opportunities for the business community within Abuja and its environs. BEST also has the mandate to support job creation and contribute to the development of workforce in the FCT and Nigeria through training of young persons and disadvantaged groups in various vocations. BEST 1000 was established to empower 1000 youth in one year with various skill sets that will help them take charge of their lives and ultimately contribute to nation building. Other expected outcomes will MADE Page 12

include; free mentoring, job matching, and networking.

to achieve our target of 1000 youth.

Q. What’s your position and role in BEST1000?

Q. How would you evaluate or rate the progress of this programme? Are you motivated to go further with the initiative? So far the program is doing very well. We have maximum support from our sponsors, almost 100 percent participation from the trainees. So far it’s been an amazing experience.

As the Director of the centre I coordinate all training and administrative activities to ensure successful delivery. This includes the BEST 1000 program. Q. What challenges have you and your team encountered during the course of this program? The main challenge that we have with BEST 1000 program is funding. The Chamber has invested a lot in to the program. To pull the program through will require external support . GIZ SKYE program is supporting with training of the first 120 youth. We will need more of this kind of support

Q. Away from work, how do you relax, unwind? For leisure I love to travel, sightsee, spend time to play with family and friends and watch movies. Q. Are there future plans for BEST1000 Programme? Are there more programs in the pipeline from ACCI and BEST

We will no longer be swindled By your lies of omission, We have come to make clear decisions. We learn every day, To put down the weapons you gave us. Break loose our minds you enslaved. Because every new day, another one of us rises, Learning, To use the tools of our words and our ideas. Very soon, this crooked wall you have built will crumble. Beware. The revolution is upon us. Be ready, As we take up our rights to do battle. MADE Page 13

n the 3rd of December 2018, the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry BEST Centre launched its #BEST1000 program dubbed “the Skilling and Vocational Training of 1000 youths in one year”. An initial batch of 120 participants were enrolled for a preparatory session at the Best Centre. This was made possible by the collaboration of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), a non-partisan, non-sectarian, member-funded organisation solely representing the common interests of the business community in the FCT; Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit Gmb or GIZ in short, a German development agency that provides services in the field of international development cooperation; and the Techspecialist Academy, an indigenous training institution specialized in offering innovative learning solutions targeted at promoting technical skill acquisition. The vocational courses would range from ICT to Agriculture and the Construction industries and would be conducted in batches beginning first with ICT. Made In Nigeria spoke with a number of the beneficiaries of the programme to get an insight of the total BEST1000 experience.

Save-a-Soul Story of the Nigerian Tech Wizkids

A team of Nigerian female teenagers on 9th August, 2018 emerged winner of the 2018 Technovation World Pitch in California, United States. igerian teenage girls have won the top position at the 2018 Technovation World Pitch Summit, the world's largest tech entrepreneurship program in the United States. Iridescent, a nonprofit empowering under-represented young people globally announced that the Nigerian girls won the Junior Division Finalists (App focus) category during the "Global Innovation Celebration" held in the San Jose Theatre, August 9, 2018. The girls, from Regina Pacis Model Secondary School, Onitsha, codenamed Team Save-A-Soul comprising of Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo and Vivian Okoye, developed a mobile application called ‘FD-Detector’ to tackle the problem of fake pharmaceutical products in Nigeria with Mrs Uchenna Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu, as their mentor. They were selected from 2,000 mobile app developers to represent Africa at the world pitch. The app leverages a drug's barcode to verify its authenticity and expiration date. Save A Soul will also partner with

NAFDAC (National Agency for Food & Drug Administration and Control), an agency responsible for regulating drugs in Nigeria. The Nigerian girls defeated teams from the United States, Spain, Turkey, Uzbekistan and China to become the first Nigerian team to win the competition. "Leveraging technology to save lives is our utmost priority, that is why we have decided to maximize this opportunity to solve the incessant rate of death caused by fake drugs," said Team Save-A-Soul. Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo on a Twitter post said, “These young ladies in Junior Secondary School developed a mobile application called ‘FD

Detector’ to tackle the problems of fake pharmaceutical products in Nigeria. Yesterday, they won the 2018 Technovation World Pitch in California. Congratulations! We are very proud of you,” Osinbajo tweeted. The teenage girls from Anambra State will be pitching their app to investors in the Silicon Valley. The team argue that Nigeria has the largest market for fake drugs, and they plan to partner with the NAFDAC, using the app, to tackle this challenge. Technovation is a program that invites girls to identify a problem in their communities and then challenge them to solve them by developing apps.

The Kajuru Castle

Exploring tourism in Northern Nigeria

Have you ever pictured a real life stone castle, complete with surrounding moat, filled with terrifying monsters and a dragon-riding Lady of the castle locked away in a high dark, gloomy tower? With her fire breathing dragon of course…. Well if only fairy tales were that real right? Get ready to have your minds blown away because the stuff of imaginations may truly exist, only to some extent anyway. Nigeria does have its own stone fortress and it is right in the middle of Southern Kaduna. By Carol Ezemba

MADE Page 18

I

n the somewhat remote regions of Southern Kaduna is a community called Kajuru, it is home to what may be termed as one of the most best kept secrets of Kaduna State. As one drives past the Local Government Headquarters in Kajuru, one is suddenly taken aback by the strangest sight imaginable: A towering stone castle right atop an equally intimidating ridge. The Kajuru castle was built in 1978 by a German expatriate Burg Heinrichswalde who lived in Kaduna at the time. Its design has a German theme featuring a Baronial Hall complete with an array of well-polished suits of armour. There are

4 medieval-style rooms with four poster beds for guests with crenulated walls that are a meter thick. It is also noteworthy that every single stone with which the castle was built was imported from Germany. One of the interesting features of the castle is the stainless steel swimming pool in the courtyard, where the likes of Mayorkun and Wande Coal amongst other Nigerian artistes have been known to shoot their music videos because of its picturesque beauty. A castle isn’t complete without a moat right? Well this castle does boast of one complete with crocodiles tended to by a foreman who is a local. A

rooftop terrace that can seat 10 guests offers a scenic view of the surrounding savannah plains. The castle is presently run by Heinrichswalde’s daughter who is more popularly known as the Dragon Lady. Access to the castle is restricted and number bound. The surrounding terrain makes it a popular site for hikers. Anyone would want to make a visit to the Kajuru Castle an item on their bucket list. MADE Page 19

Till Death Do Us Part A gripping tale of Love, Lust and Vengance By Dan Ochu-Baiye

H

MADE Page 20

ave you ever seen someone die? Random stranger? A loved one? I mean in real time, right before your eyes? I saw my husband die. It is not pleasant. Especially when they die by a knife. The look... That realization that they are dying. The shock. The disbelief. The insecurities show in those final moments... Their lives laid bare for everyone discerning... Oh, and the pain! He died via stabbing. I physically felt his pain. Good Lord! It was horrible! I should feel no pity for him

considering all the hurt he put me through. But, in retrospect, no one deserves to die like my husband did. I am way ahead of myself... Good morning. How are you doing today? Have you eaten? I hope your family is doing well? I do not know you, but I love you. Yes I do... These days my love is shed abroad. So, my hubby. I married him when I turned eighteen. He was always my friend. Strange fragmentation of words I know. Even Microsoft Word advices that I consider rephrasing... Nah... He was always my friend.

He was already an adult when I met him. He watched me grow. He was a family friend and a mentor. I told him everything! He provided counsel appropriately. He was my first. My best. And my life. Was... He was... Was, because he started cheating on me. The signs were there, I did not see them until the very end. He is very secretive. That enigmatic ‘introvert-ion’ started to reek of infidelity. I could not touch his mobile devices. I was constantly on eggshells around him. He seemed to be hiding everything all the time. Luckily I had friends. Women who were older and wiser. Single moms, spinsters and fellow married women. Their advice was unanimous. “He was up to no - good” That revelation provoked me to the point of insanity. I loved this idiot! I had given him my virginity, my substantial inheritance and my heart. I had sacrificed everything I was, just to be with him. Ene, my friend had a story like mine. In her case though, she had ‘arranged’ for her deviant husband to suffer a fatal misadventure. She had been his next-of-kin, and so she had Sfull custody and control of his estate. And so the seed was planted in my heart. Who was my husband’s side chic? Who was he sleeping with apart from me? Unfortunately, he was a taciturn man. He never volunteered information. I was running mad with anxiety. To further rub salt in my festering sores, I started to chance upon evidence. Some of my friends confessed that he had MADE Page 21

either propositioned them or had slept with close friends of theirs. And in a blind rage, I contacted Ene. Ene ‘fessed up and hinted that my husband had (at some point) behaved inappropriately toward her! She had been flummoxed until now she whispered sadly. I was livid! I immediately transferred the required amount of money to her and set the date for his painful death two weeks from that day. I confess that I tossed in an additional fifty grand for his painful demise. Idiot! He was home uncharacteristically early for his appointment with death. He was in a good mood. He must have made some money because he arrived with a large grilled salmon and expensive white wine. He was flirtatious throughout dinner and had even done an online bank transfer of a little under a million dollars in my favor ‘just because’. Too much, too late. I placed my hate on ‘simmer’ and fucked him senseless that night. He was snoring lightly when I got dressed an hour later. At about 12:55 am, I opened the door at the back of our home and sure enough the door handle turned in confirmation. The door opened a fraction of an inch and stayed

slightly ajar. I returned to his side and must have fallen asleep. I awoke to sounds I could not place. I jumped out of bed when I did not see my husband in it. As I emerged out of the narrow corridor into our spacious living room, I witnessed the contract killer drive a long blade from behind my husband right through until the first three inches popped out of his torso. This scene was pure coincidence. There was no set plan as to where or how my husband was to be murdered (at my behest). However, therein lay the assassin’s dilemma I presume. I had seen his face. As my husband crumpled lifelessly to the floor, the man’s eyes latched upon me. In a flash he was upon me. I am not playing, from approximately three meters away, he suddenly had my throat in his left hand. Squeezing tight. I was going to die too. I kept clawing at his face and iron-like forearms. “But I paid you...! This was not the plan!!” I managed to get out repeatedly. His brutish features were marred even more by bloodlust. He was hissing involuntarily. Specks of spit garnished his blackened lips. His breath was fetid. His eyes were out of focus and almost seemed ecstatic. This sick, degenerate wanker

"I could only hope the knife would make it quick..."

MADE Page 22

loved to kill! Our bodies are only a vessel. I started to step out into the ‘unknown’ when suddenly I was released. I fell to the cold marble tiles dragging air through a bruised trachea into tortured lungs. I could only hope that the knife would make it quick... But the pain never came. I think I suffered a mild stroke when a hand touched my face. I went into a seizure when I saw my husband’s face. Literally. The seizure I mean. Was I dead like he was? It is ancient history that my husband did not die. He survived the assassination attempt and arose to drive the assassins own blade through his own temple. And I am here living in hell... You see with my husband you can never tell. Did he hear my conversation with the hired killer? My husband is a bastard. I think that he did. He heard everything I said. And all else in between. Then he decided not to die. Then got up and killed our killer. And then decided to keep his peace as usual. Did not matter if I died in apprehension. It has been a five years since. He has never broached the topic. Not. Even. Once.

Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua was born on 15 October 1989 in Watford, Hertfordshire , the son of Yeta and Robert Joshua. His mother is Nigerian, while his father is British, with Irish and Nigerian ancestry. Joshua’s specific Nigerian background can be traced back to the Yoruba people. His cousin, Ben Lleyemi, is also a professional boxer. The pair made their professional debuts together in 2013. Joshua spent some of his early years in Nigeria as a boarding school student. Following his parents’ divorce when he was 12, he returned to the UK halfway through Year Seven to join Kings Langley Secondary School . Growing up on the Meriden Estate in Garston, Hertfordshire , he was called “Femi” by his friends and former teach-

ers, due to his middle name, Oluwafemi. A late starter in the sport, Joshua only began boxing in 2007, aged 18, when his cousin suggested he take it up. His club, Finchley ABC in Barnet, North London, is also home to professional heavyweight Dereck Chisora. Joshua won the 2009 and 2010 Haringey Box Cup. Joshua won the senior ABA

Championships in 2010, in only his 18th bout, and later turned down £50,000 to turn professional. “Turning down that £50,000 was easy. I didn’t take up the sport for money, I want to win medals.” He also went on to win the same tournament the following year. In 2010 his domestic success earned him a place on the GB Boxing team and later the same year he became British Amateur champion at the GB Amateur Boxing Championships after defeating Amin Isa. In June 2011 at the 2011 European Amateur Boxing Championships he beat Eric Berechlin and Cathal McMonagle but was stopped by aggressive Romanian southpaw Mihai Nistor after receiving several standing counts. In October 2011 he was named Amateur Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Club of Great Britain. Joshua had an amateur record of 40-3. Professional career. Early career On 11 July 2013 it was confirmed that Joshua had turned professional under the Matchroom Sport promotional banner. Joshua made his professional debut on 5 October 2013 at the O2 Arena in London in the Main-Event of a card featuring Scott Quigg.

Here are seven reasons to make sure you're drinking enough water every day:

1

Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 70% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. When you're low on fluids, the brain triggers the body's thirst mechanism. And unless you are taking medications that make you thirsty, Guest says, you should listen to those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, milk, coffee -- anything but alcohol. "Alcohol interferes with the brain and kidney communication and causes excess excretion of fluids which can then lead to dehydration," he says.

2 Water is one of the essential requirements for life. All living things need water for their survival. Water is used for a variety of purposes, including drinking, food preparation, irrigation and manufacturing. Although water covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, less than 1% of that resource is available as fresh water – and this is not evenly distributed throughout the world. By Maji Madalla

MADE Page 28

Water Can Help Control Calories. For years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy. While water doesn't have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help. Food with high water content tends to look larger, its higher volume requires more chewing, and it is absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full. Water-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, brothbased soups, oatmeal, and beans.

3

Water Helps Energize Muscles. Cells that don't maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle

fatigue. "When muscle cells don't have adequate fluids, they don't work as well and performance can suffer," says Guest. Drinking enough fluids is important when exercising. Follow the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for fluid intake before and during physical activity. These guidelines recommend that people drink about 17 ounces of fluid about two hours before exercise. During exercise, they recommend that people start drinking fluids early, and drink them at regular intervals to replace fluids lost by sweating.

4

Water Helps Keep Skin Looking Good. Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. But don't expect over- hydration to erase wrinkles or fine lines, says Atlanta dermatologist Kenneth Ellner, MD. "Dehydration makes your skin look dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration," he says. "But once you are adequately hydrated, the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids.

water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine, explains Guest. "Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate," he says. When you're getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys trap extra fluid for bodily functions.

6

Water Helps Maintain Normal Bowel Function. Adequate hydration keeps things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation. When you don't get enough fluid, the colon pulls water from stools to maintain hydration -- and the result is constipation. "Adequate fluid and fiber is the perfect combination, because the fluid pumps up the fiber and acts like a broom to keep your bowel functioning properly," says Koelemay.

7

Every organ in the body heavily depends on water to function properly and to its capacity. We are almost water. Medieval thinkers still believe water is there to give the body volume; otherwise it would be nothing but dry chemicals.

CONCLUSION: Water is important to the mechanics of the human body. In fact, all the cell and organ Water Helps Your Kidneys. functions made up in our entire anatomy and physioloBody fluids transport waste products in and out gy depend on water for their functioning. of cells. LIONHEART Review of Nollywood’s Billion naira movie

N

owadays Nigerian filmmakers are taking great strides to ensure they recapture and present a more realistic image of their country for international audiences. Such feats that saw Genevieve Nnaji’s Directorial debut thrown into the international scene with such force that the world had to stand still and applaud and entertainment giant, Netflix rushed in to buy the movie rights in a deal that saw Nnaji becoming the first Nollywood billionaire. MADE magazine looks into a powerful review made by Anoke Adaeze. Culled from AsuquoE’s Talk Media Africa

“It’s better stale than not at all, aye?” I’ve been up to my neck with a million and one things to do since the inception of this delightfully New Year, but I know this girl wouldn’t quite forgive herself if she totally failed to give her two cents on Netflix’s latest original, Lionheart. First off, the Lionheart cast couldn’t have been better selected. Something about seeing Nkem Owoh, Genevieve Nnaji, Phyno, KOK, Onyeka Onwenu, Kalu Ikeagwu and the man after my own heart, Pete Edochie thrown together in a classic mix which steadily gravitated to a rich creamy blendwarmed me all the way to my toes. I low-key expected that, like the typical Nollywood movie plots where conspiracy theories are woven from even the most innocuous of situations, Godswill Obiagu would seek to oust his brother and niece from the family business. My Nollywood movie prediction skill was put to shame and it felt good to be wrong this once. There were hilarious scenes, like when Madame External Auditor said she went for teeth-whitening and then proceeded to display dentition

that reminded me of blighted maize. I was absolutely chuffed with the infusion of culture in such a way that was somehow, neither intrusive nor painfully cliché to watch. The way Adaeze’s mum interrupted serious conversation to chip in a characteristically maternal ‘don’t slouch’ mild reprimand, is very typical of Nigerian mothers. Mine, very inclusive. Be it a Nollywood classic or a Nollywood Awkuzu film, Nkem Owoh never fails to bring his own vintage flavour to the table. I found myself instinctively smiling whenever he appeared on the screen. Yeah, I dubbed the category of Nollywood movies that try in vain to mess with my IQ, Nollywood Awkuzu and the twenty-first century sort, Nollywood

Classic. No offence meant to the Awkuzu people. The movie was pleasantly indigenous and even though it was subtitled, I don’t think non-Igbos got the real essence from the Godswill Obiagu character as the subtitling did not almost do justice to the character. I could barely take my eyes off the screen when Adaeze was on it. It’s no news to anyone who knows me that Genevieve Nnaji can do no wrong in my sight. LionHeart managed to meld Nollywood Awkuzu and Nollywood Classic in an even delightful blend. Didn’t think the day would come when I would think that. Yeah. The story of LionHeart is an impressive tale of leadership, mentorship and succession. It is the ultimate wish of a responsible father to groom his children to succeed him when he is old, frail or gone. The comic moments were very natural. It was Genevieve’s directorial debut and she totally nailed it. I’m glad she hit pay dirt with this one. It was totally deserved. I hope her next movie leaves this one in the dust. LionHeart in three words. Quaint. Refreshing. Hilarious.”

My name is Lemi Ghariokwu and I am not black. I am an African. I am a human being first, then I am African, born, bred and buttered in Lagos. I am proud of my culture. I am not ashamed to be seen as African because only I determine how you treat me – Lemi Ghariokwu, The Conscious African.

Lemi as he is fondly called was born in Agege, Lagos State on December 26th, 1955. Although he was initially groomed at the Yaba College of Technology to be a Mechanical Engineer, Lemi decided to pursue his dreams by training himself to master his art. He read and equipped himself constantly with knowledge and developed his art skill alongside. He grew up listening to Reggae songs and studying metaphysics. His maturity into self and social consciousness was facilitated by Fela Kuti, Peter Tosh, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Kwame Nkrumah and Steve Biko. “Art is beyond a profession for me. It is not just a tool of self-expression. It is a liberating force, a story and most importantly, a tool of hope. A chance meeting between Lemi and Fela Kuti in 1974 was pivotal in the life of the young Graphic Artist. Babatunde Harrison (a journalist for Sunday Punch) had walked into a pub and stumbled on an art work Lemi did for the pub owner and requested to see more. An illustration Lemi did of Roforofo Fight, a song by Fela caught his eye and decided right then that Lemi meet Fela. The completely self-taught "Lagos Afro-pop art exponent/ Afro-visionary artist" proceeded to gain worldwide fame as

the designer of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's album covers; and between 1974 and 1993, he produced 26 of those, apart from hundreds of covers for musicians like Bob Marley, Kris Okotie, Osita Osadebe, James Iroha, Gilles Peterson, Miriam Makeba, and Lucky Dube. In addition, for about a decade, from the early 1980s he was a consulting album cover designer for Polygram Records in Nigeria, designing more than

2000 covers for them. Lemi's work involves a variety of styles, often using vibrant colors and individuated typefaces of his own design. His art is said to be rebellious, comical, political, even erotic but most of all he is a genius in pictorial narration, realism and iconicity. Many of Ghariokwu's cover images echo and sometimes comment on the work and politics of the recordings that they accompany, serv-

ing a consciously integrated meta-textual function. He is famous for his captivating and intricate record sleeves designs and he never fails to give life to lyrics through his pictorial images. The Observer Music Magazine, UK, called him "King of Covers" during his solo exhibition in the UK in 2004. Ghariokwu's work has attracted much attention in the West and is the subject of various retrospective exhibitions. His painting Anoda Sistem, created in 2002, is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Some of Ghariokwu's archive is now in the possession of Punch Records whose CEO Ammo Talwar has invited the academic community to make sense of a utilise this material in productive ways. ing and influential graphic artists in the world, published by Phaidon Press in New York. The Cover King’s latest work is the album cover he produced for Falz The Bahd Guy. An album titled “Moral Instruction”, a spin off of Falz’s controversial single of 2018, “This Is Nigeria. Moral Instruction was released in January of 2019. The songs in both albums cast a harsh light on the ills, two-faced values and insecurities in the political sphere of the present day Nigeria. Speaking on the inspiration behind the cover, Lemi explains that the content of all eight songs in the album is translated into the cover art illustration. “The music that Falz is putting out is very social-politically conscious music. The album cover entails materials from all the eight songs – there is a common thread running through the songs. It’s from

our political situation and the over-religiosity of our society”, he narrates.
