Robotic cleaning, inspection & maintenance can stop PV performance degradation

In recent years, it's better known that solar panels can reach up to 33% less power output due to soiling, microcracks and hot spots, amongst other manufacturing reasons Hence, the industry's attention has slowly shifted towards detecting the best way to keep solar panels sheltered from natural elements (sand, dust and soil cementation, extreme heat and humidity) on a daily basis and during every season of the year

Especially in desert climates, like the MENA region, with extremely high and low temperatures and severe soiling problems, a smart multifaceted solution is necessary to extend the lifetime of solar parks and support the park's staff to do their best with the means and technologies provided

To offer a more holistic approach to PV maintenance, a reliable robotic system should

be comprised of cleaning robotic units equipped with cutting-edge software and hardware

include a smart monitoring system for the PV cleaning performance and adjust the frequency and mode as dictated by deep learning algorithms and the respective soiling rate

go beyond PV cleaning by conducting advanced analysis of the 24/7 data collected by the robotics units

identify hotspots, microcracks and structural problems that may damage the PV modules and promptly notify the O&M team to take action

perform real-time analytics regarding the solar park's microclimate conditions

provide seamless and time-saving services to solar panels to avoid interference with their operation, as opposed to how a sea of workers would fail to meet expectations at the same tasks while causing financial loss

Therefore, collaborating with a robotics company with the above services is a fundamental investment that can predetermine a solar park's future The right partner will lean over every solar park's needs and make it their mission to improve and even streamline maintenance and repair

processes. They will also have the responsibility to give assurance that their robotic system works for the benefit of the solar park, from the protection of the PV coatings to the reliability of the PV data collection

Το Solbotix, continuous innovation is the number one principle since the demand for smarter, more efficient solutions is growing day by day By leaning over the arising solar industry issues, the company offers a holistic approach to solar panels that prioritises PV cleaning but does not limit itself to that The engineering team has built a technological system with functionalities focusing on effective inspection, preventive maintenance, and timely repairs Ultimately, Solbotix testing sessions never cease to happen, aiming to further solidify the company's technical expertise, reliability, and positive impact on the solar industry

Dust accumulation on solar panels can significantly reduce their efficiency and energy production, particularly in dusty regions such as the Middle East To address this issue, several dust-free solar panel solutions for rooftop solar systems are available Self-cleaning solar panels, which are designed to automatically remove dust and dirt from their surface, are one solution. These panels have a special coating that helps to repel dust Another option is to apply anti-reflective coatings to the solar panels' surfaces These coatings aid in reducing reflection and glare, which can attract dust and dirt to the panels' surface These coatings help to keep the surface of the panels clean and free of dust build-up by reducing reflection and glare.

Some solar panel manufacturers are working on nano-coatings and other advanced materials to repel dust and other particles from the panels' surfaces These coatings are still in the early stages of development, but they show promise for providing long-term dust protection and maintaining the efficiency of rooftop solar systems. It will take some time for this technology to become commercially available in the region

solar panels achieve high efficiency through a unique combination of materials and can have wattages of up to 500Wp or more. These panels are ideal for rooftop solar systems that require a high power output while remaining efficient

However, high-wattage solar panels are typically more expensive than lower-wattage panels and may necessitate special mounting systems and inverters to accommodate their size and power output Before choosing high-wattage solar panels for a rooftop solar installation in the Middle East, it is also important to consider the available roof space as well as local regulations and incentives for rooftop solar systems

The Middle East has a hot and harsh climate, which can affect the performance of rooftop solar inverters To address this issue, several innovations in solar inverter technology for rooftop solar systems have been developed in the Middle East. Investment Opportunity Arising More in the Distributed Solar Projects in the Middle East Region

Investment potential in distributed solar projects, particularly in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector, has significantly increased in the Middle East region Energy consumption is rising, and people are becoming more aware of the advantages of renewable energy, which has attracted investors to this industry. The region's nations have recently made large investments in distributed solar projects as well as other forms of renewable energy

The development of rooftop solar installations in the Middle East is being fueled by several factors The abundance of sunshine is one of the most important since it offers a great source of renewable energy. Another factor is how much more affordable solar energy is compared to conventional fossil fuels Recent years have seen a sharp decline in the price of solar energy, increasing consumer accessibility and affordability

Governments in the Middle East are also actively supporting the expansion of the industry for distributed solar installations To promote investment in the industry, they have put in place several legislative initiatives and financial incentives, such as tax cuts, grants, and subsidies These actions are assisting in fostering an environment that is advantageous for investors, making it simpler for them to invest in this industry.

Significant investment opportunities in distributed solar projects have emerged in the Middle East region as a result of the rising demand for clean and renewable energy sources The Middle East is well-positioned to benefit from this trend thanks to friendly governmental policies and an abundance of sunny days

Smaller-scale solar systems that are often positioned closer to the end customers are referred to as distributed solar projects These initiatives are getting more and more wellliked because they can offer a cheap and simple way to build a sustainable energy source. People who want to save the most money right away choose the longest term However, those that care more about owning the assets and keeping the equipment after the lease expires will search for a shorter term and pay more in yearly leasing payments All of the company's contracts include maintenance and replacement parts, and customers receive fully operational systems after the leasing term

Although market awareness is rapidly increasing, finance still presents challenges. Financial institutions in the area are frequently accused by industry players of being uninterested in the distributed energy sub-sector and of not demonstrating a strong desire to try to understand the market This has made it nearly impossible for businesses, especially startups, to secure financing

But lending is scarce over the majority of the rest of this region It is motivated by two factors, the first of which is the banks' general lack of experience and opportunity, as well as their legitimate realization that the industry is facing new commercial hazards.

One of the difficulties that banks encounter daily is that it might take a lot of work to comprehend this new product line that they are trying to service, and there needs to be scale to justify that labor Banks typically tell us that they are not interested in looking at projects with 1 MW or 2 MW of power And to be honest, the costs associated with obtaining a $1 million or $2 million loan from the bank are too expensive

The lease's length is a further difficulty. With commercial companies, developers are entering into 15- to 20-year contracts Compared to most commercial loans, those are significantly longer, therefore the banks must rely on developers to carry out the proper credit checks and due diligence before signing contracts to establish the appropriate framework.

MIDDLE EAST RESEARCH JAN-FEB Issue 2023 | Pg 22 MiddleEast

Many developers who are new to the industry may not be familiar with credit procedures and bankable PPA contract forms As a result, veteran developers in solar scape sympathize with many lenders who lack knowledge and who observe difficulties in particular development portfolios.

Despite the region's strong sun irradiation, distributed solar energy's prospects have long been hampered by its high upfront costs However, a novel business model that is enhancing the possibilities for solar energy may have finally cleared the air.

The cost of rooftop solar PV has already decreased significantly since 2009 because of technological advances, accelerating Middle Eastern adoption As the solar leasing model achieves increasing acceptability among the commercial and industrial parts of the energy sector, industry estimates now point to a similar trend in the uptake of distributed energy

The rooftop solar PV market will expand at a similar rate over the next five years The distributed energy sub-sector in the region has the potential to attract investments worth several billion dollars in the future The energy market will undergo a major change in the following five years As energy consumption rises, it may now be viable for those enterprises to meet the additional demand locally without experiencing significant development or expansion The addition of distributed energy to grid infrastructure will be possible through storage, demand management, or dispatch instructions And the most lucrative investment opportunity for renewables will be in this industry

The desire for solar energy has grown as a result of Egypt's power costs increasing by 20% annually and the country's rising fuel prices Businesses are becoming more aware of the need to reduce their rising overhead expenditures due to the rising cost of electricity Egypt is a pretty active market at the moment; they've had some significant changes, and undoubtedly, things are stabilizing from a macroeconomic viewpoint. By 2022 and 2035, Egypt aims to generate 20% and 42% of its electricity from renewable sources, respectively, with wind contributing 14%, hydropower 1 98%, solar PV 21 3%, wind 14%, concentrated solar power (CSP) 5 52%, and conventional energy sources 57 33%

Solar systems installed in Dubai as part of the Shams Dubai initiative, which DEWA launched in 2015, allow participants to sell any excess power produced by solar panels back to the grid, giving the rooftop industry a boost and bringing with it a wealth of investment opportunities in the distributed segment

The Middle East is a desirable market for investment in distributed solar projects because of the rising demand for clean and renewable energy, supportive governmental policies, and an abundance of solar resources Investors have a great chance to profit from this trend and help the area transition to a sustainable energy future as a result of the sector's sustained expansion. Significant investment opportunities are available in the industry of distributed solar projects in the Middle East With the rising need for energy, solar energy's rising cost competitiveness, and kind government policies, this industry is set to experience significant growth and increased investment over the next few years As a result, those looking for business prospects in the field of renewable energy especially solar can think about the Middle East as a prospective location

SPECIAL SPECIAL STORY STORY

Middle Eastern Countries Replace DG Sets With Solar Rooftop Systems For Better LCOE

The average overall cost of producing one unit of energy throughout a project, including capital, operation and maintenance, and fuel expenditures, is measured by the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) The LCOE makes it easier to reliably compare the costs of various energy sources and technologies

It's crucial to take into account the unique circumstances of each project, such as the cost of the initial investment, the local cost of diesel fuel, and the anticipated lifespan of each technology when comparing the LCOE of solar PV systems and diesel generators.

Due to technological developments and manufacturing economies of scale, solar PV systems' LCOE has generally been falling in the area over the past few years, making them more competitive with conventional energy sources. Particularly in areas with high levels of solar insolation, which are abundant throughout the Middle East region, the LCOE of solar PV systems can frequently be lower than that of diesel generators

Diesel generators' LCOE, however, may be more advantageous in regions with poor solar insolation Diesel generators can also offer backup power in the event of outages, making them a better option in regions with less stable grids However, things are changing in the Middle Eastern nations, where grid infrastructure is gradually encircling the entire region's nations While an integrated independent hybrid solar PV system and diesel generator power system in the Middle East may be a good option for off-the-grid and distant locations where connectivity to the electrical grid is either scarce or non-existent The area offers excellent conditions for solar PV systems due to its high levels of solar insolation

Solar PV panels are generally installed atop a system mechanism in a hybrid system to maximize the quantity of solar energy harvested When the rooftop solar panels are unable to produce enough electricity, such as when it's cloudy or raining (which are generally rare in most of the Middle Eastern countries), the diesel generator steps in to supply electricity.

A hybrid system can offer a more dependable and economical option than relying only on either source of energy by combining the two This can be particularly crucial in remote locations where the expense of running a diesel generator continually and the cost of delivering gasoline there can both be significant

When compared to alternative energy sources, a rooftop solar PV system in the Middle East can have numerous advantages in terms of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) Due to its high solar insolation, the Middle East is a great place to install solar PV systems.

In terms of LCOE in the Middle East, these are some of the main advantages of rooftop solar PV systems such as Low Running Costs: solar PV systems have low operating costs because they only need infrequent maintenance and don't need fuel or any other ongoing inputs The LCOE of a solar PV system can be much lower as a result when compared to other energy sources Zero Emissions: compared to fossil fuels, which release pollutants and greenhouse gases, solar PV systems have zero emissions, making them a cleaner and more sustainable energy source Government incentives: a rooftop solar PV system's LCOE can be reduced by the subsidies and incentives that several Middle Eastern nations provide to encourage the use of renewable energy

Building owners can lessen their reliance on the grid and possibly cut their overall energy expenditures by producing their electricity Increased Energy Independence: installing a rooftop solar PV system can make a building more energy independent, lowering its reliance on the grid and boosting its resilience in the event of a power outage.

In comparison to alternative energy sources, rooftop solar PV systems in the Middle East can provide several advantages, including reduced operating costs, zero emissions, financial incentives from the government, lower energy expenses, and greater energy independence. To choose the most cost-effective course of action, it is important to take into account the particulars of each project, such as the initial investment cost and local laws

It might be challenging to compare the LCOE of PV and diesel generators because so many different variables are involved It is advised to conduct a thorough examination of the unique conditions surrounding each project to identify which technology is the most cost-effective choice While in the Middle East, an integrated standalone hybrid solar PV system and diesel generator power system can provide a workable alternative for off-grid communities, offering a dependable and affordable source of electricity To choose the most economical course of action, it is important to take into account the particulars of each project, such as the initial investment cost and regional fuel prices.
