G-BUILDING YEAR: TEAM: TUTOR: PROGRAM: LOCATION:
2014 (Final project for Architecture Design class level 3) Nadia Borri + Sol María Calcarami Cecilia Inés Peralta Mixed use building: Housing + Comerce Guemes neighborhood, in Córdoba, Argentina.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project is located next to the center of the city of Córdoba, a developing area which nowadays is considered insecure and neglected, with a low density population and deteriorated architecture. This neighborhood, Barrio Guemes, has a very rich heritage and local culture involving the arts and theater. It has many natural
resources such as the river La Cañada and the foliage that follows it, crossing the city as a whole. With our project we seeked to fulfill the habitation necessity in the city within it’s contiguous developing area. We had two principal goals to achieve with our building. First, we wanted to create FLEXIBLE housing units that could adjust to different habitation needs. And second, we wanted to RESPECT the site and it’s habitants by giving special importance to the public space at the ground floor that connects our project with the rest of the area; and by using raw materials, like recycled wood and organic concrete for the facade, trying to blend in the site’s rusticity.
Parking area
Public entrance + Shop + Bar
PRIVACY CONCEPT The building itself is sectioned into three areas, each with a different privacy level. On the ground floor we have the public space; an extension of the sidewalk; the entrance to de building, shops and a bar. Secondly, we find the heart of the building, which holds the vertical circulation and community areas for the residents. Finally, the apartments hold the maximum level of privacy on the sides of the building.
Apartments floors
Terrace and common use salon
THE IDEA The morphology of the building was determined by the characteristics of the site and it’s possibilities. We wanted to orientate our building to the north in order to take advantage and use of natural illumination for inner spaces. Also, we wanted to open up our ground floor and the building towards the public space, as well as opening to the views and the river landscape. The result was an L shaped building that opens itself to de neighborhood.

ITERIOR SPACE Each habitation unit is equipped with integrated furniture that enables the flexible use of space to fit different necessities at different times. The idea came from maximizing and optimizing the interior spaces, and creating apartments that suit different needs, different kinds of families.

TECHNOLOGY The technology and materials used consisted in a concrete structure and facade with a rustic finish. It´s malleability gave us the opportunity to use the skeleton of the building as the sustention to construct the furniture and storage space in recycled wood. As noted, the entire building is constructed in concrete, even the parasols, with lightened concrete. The vertical circulation area was designed in steel and a recycled wood filter, so it would differentiate from the more private spaces, not only in its privacy, but also in the material used.

G-Building
The one-bedroom apartments were very carefully designed to take the maximum advantage of space. Therefore we design a complex piece of furniture that covers all the basic needs and transforms itself to fulfill different tasks. The idea was to concentrate the actions of sleeping + bathing + cooking inside this -box- like structure in a way that it can be closed up in order to free the rest of the apartment’s space for other activities, making it a smart/ flexible unit.

GUEMES PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL YEAR: TEAM: TUTOR: PROGRAM: LOCATION:
2015 (Final project for Architecture Design class level 4) Nadia Borri + Sol María Calcarami + Consuelo Oyola Mariano Piccardo High school + Sports Guemes neighborhood, in Córdoba, Argentina.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION For this project we were given the assignment of designing a public high school in the neighborhood of Guemes, in Córdoba city.
public education is a representation of the State itself taking responsibility for an existing problem while spreading the most important tool for progress to its sOciety. Therefore it should be inclusive, universal and open for EVERYONE to have access to. This particular concept was the main idea that powered the project’s design; the idea of creating a space for the marginal society of the neighborhood that could offer a wide range of public uses, a place to have access to education as a community.
Our main goal was to create two differentiated areas: a more public one, containing the parts of the program that could be opened after school hours for public use; and To begin with, we started analyzing the concept of public education and the role a more private and safe area, with the right concentration environment for the kids to that the government plays in it. We concluded and developed the idea that the learn properly.

CLASSROOM DESIGN For the design of each classroom and the classroom area itself, we rethought the concept of learning and how to improve the conditions for a suitable learning environment. We wanted to design a space reigned by natural light, but at the same time we didn’t want the kids to get distracted with what is happening outdoors. We therefore used materials like glass bricks and perforated metal sheet panels to let sunlight in, but at the same time maintaining a concentration atmosphere inside. We incorporated patios in between the classrooms to bring nature into the educational area, and for the students to have a quick access to recreational areas during breaks.

The hood is a historical spot in the city, and it has a lot of heritage. It always had mainly residential usage, nowadays being occupied by old families, young couples and college students. Furthermore, there are 3 important hospitals nearby, a university, and the main bus station of the city is one bridge away. We concluded in a project that can serve as a response to the habitation needs of its population, in its wide variety; a hotel / temporary residences; a block of offices offering PROJECT DESCRIPTION services to the growing population, and commerce / gastronomy spots to attract visiGeneral Paz neighborhood is a very diverse area of the city. It is located right next tors. Finally, all this activities are situated surrounding a public park, it being the heart to the center area and it is developing fast. The project is a result from an urban of the project, which is a transition between the existing park in front of the building, analysis and, in which we detected many opportunities to create a building with and the building itself. a mixed program that could satisfy all the needs of the General Paz’s neighbors.

TYPOLOGIES As detected, there is a wide variety of types of possible residents, from an elder public, to college students and young couples. Our strategy was based in creating flexible typologies that could adapt to every need, with continuous and integrated spaces and a clear and legible distribution. The typologies come in two formats, 1 floored apartment and 2 floored duplexes. The duplex come as well in different sizes, maintaining the ground floor format, but changing the upper floor, adaptable for different family need.

TECHNOLOGY The structure was designed in concrete, with a unique and repeated module that was obtained from the space needed to park three cars. The distance between the pillars is 7.5 meters; 7.5 meters in which we designed every typology to fit in: the hotel rooms, the offices, the shops and the apartments, creating a very regular constructive scheme in spite the irregular final shape of the building. The facade has a very irregular look on the residential areas, and a neat style in the hotel, ground floor and offices with a curtain wall technology. The inside of the building, to create privacy between the habitation units, we applied a very simple technology combining a steel structure with a metal mesh and planters, to create a -green wall-.

how to respond in a creative and mostly, in an innovative way. We chose to work with black waters for many reasons. Firstly, because we noticed that the water treatment plant is not working properly, and is reportedly releasing a high percentage of the waste water without any treatment to the river Suquía. Another reason was that the sewer system of the city is almost collapsed, and finally we found out that we could use the waste water to produce ENERGY.
Our challenge throughout this exercise was to transform this water treatment plant PROJECT DESCRIPTION into architecture, creating a hybrid between an infrastructure piece and a urban miFor this project, each group was given a topic to work with in order to design a lestone that integrates society into the process of water treatment, raise awareness utopian project for Córdoba in 2050. We were assigned the topic of WATER, so we of water waste, all this while introducing a new type of public space for the future city. started studying in which ways water was a problematic issue for the city, and
TECHNOLGY Each module consists on: + A ‘green roof ’ formed by the sum of small interconnected bioreactors containing the microscopic algae and maintaining its living conditions with water and nutrients obtained from the waste water, and the correct amount of CO2. + A steel structure made out of hollow round section tubes that allow the passage of water inside. As the water is pumped through this pipe-like structure, it is filtrated and driven to the bioreactors. Finally the pipes are connected with the biodigestor, taking the excess of biomass produced by the algae to the biodigestor to produce biogas. Top View Project + Site

+ The ground floor is where the recreational park takes place, where we can see the biodigestor appear from the ground with its green roof as well, and a pond where part of the filtrated water goes, in order to always maintain the visitor in contact with the system. The subsoil level consists of the first and final steps of the process. The waste water enters the first tank: the filtration/sedimentation tank, where the solid waste goes down and to de biodigestor, while the water stays in the upper part of the tank and is pumped through the metallic structure. This structure is also connected to de biodigestor, where the biomass produced by the algae meets the solid waste from the black water to produce BIOGAS.

We investigated new technologies that facilitate and potentiate the energy production from BIOMASS obtained from the water waste; which is then transformed into BIOGAS inside a biodigestor, and finally turned into ELECTRICAL ENERGY. We incorporated in the design an innovative organic material through a glass bioreactor, which constituted a series of roofs throughout the public space. We are talking about microscopic ALGAE. When you combine algae in a bioreactor with the filtered water from the sewer and sunlight, the algae reproduces very fast and generates large amounts of biomass to produce energy. Also, Algae absorbs more carbon dioxide from the environment than any other species and during the summer, the elevated temperature makes it grow faster and therefore produce a more shaded roof, cooling down the atmosphere beneath.

one. We chose a site nowadays empty, in front of the river and next to an abandoned shed. There have been many thesis and ideas to refunctionalize this particular shed. We took one of these existing projects to develop our own program to complement and accompany the renewed shed with activities.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project is a metamorphosis from the previous and more utopian project to a more plausible one. We maintained the same concepts and ideas from the first intervention, but bringing it more to the reality of Córdoba and with a stronger connection with the site. We firstly changed the location to reduce de scale of the project to a more real
We maintain our main goal of reusing wastewater to produce energy through biogas technology, but now focusing more in the technological process and the proper spaces needed. We also focused in creating this hybrid that serves both as an infrastructure to the city and a reunion space for its community. The program itself became more complex, having educational areas to raise awareness; an arts center, library and an open amphitheater that complement the artistic approach of the refunctionalized shed, a public park and a pedestrian bridge that connects the project with the city.

YEAR: 2017 (Final THESIS project for Architecture Design class level 6) TEAM: Nadia Borri + Sol María Calcarami + Consuelo Oyola TUTOR: Javier Giorgis PROGRAM: New concept of juvenile jail + Park + High school + Cultural center LOCATION: Guemes neighborhood, in Córdoba, Argentina. RECOGNITION: Special felicitation from the tribunal and recomendation for publishing.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Juvenile delinquency is a major issue in nowadays society, specially in Latin America. We chose this subject as our thesis project because we see it is an unresolved problem: in Argentina, there are no laws that regulate the conditions in which the minors should be kept behind bars; the State does not have any re-integration program that is actually in practice; society shouts out for justice but look away and are unaware of the imprison conditions or how the teens are been re educated to be able to be part of the society

again; there are irregular and ilegal practices all over the country, specially in the case study of Córdoba, where underaged are been imprisoned (the legal age for minors to go to juvenile prison is 16, while kids of only 11 are been kept locked). In other words, it is a serious problematic that is not been taken care of, not by the society, not by the State, not by the justice. We take this gap in the legal system that fails to condition the imprison characteristics for minors, as an OPORTUNIT Y TO IMAGINE A NEW SYSTEM, a system that has room for the activities that are held in the current centers, but in a more amicable way, with a stronger connection with the environment, and with more posibilities of reintegration. To guarantee this, we focused on 4 main strategies: x usage of SPORTS + EDUCATION + CULTURE as tools for rehabilitation x providing of a supportive environment with containment x bringing the problematic into the cities to create a bond between the society and the problem to avoid discrimination and stigmatization x prevention by providing the society with educational buildings and public spaces that guarantee equal oportunities.
The problem in numbers
Number of minors behind bars in the world Cรณrdoba is the 3rd province with more juvenile delinquency in the country
Argentina is the 3rd country in Latin Am. with more juvenile delinquency.
Only 9% of minors in the system are women
Percentage of minors that commited a crime according to their age (35% are illegaly imprisoned)
99% of the minors that enter de system suffer from drug addiction

HIBRIDATION We centered our project in designing a hybrid bulding , mixing throughout multiple levels complete different uses. We took advantage of the huge topographic differences in the soil level to assign various activities depending on the level. For example, on the educational strip we have, we have firstly a mixed use public school. This means it could be used both, by the neighbours and the minors inside our center at different times. The school program includes 8 classrooms, a theorical laboratory, a technical laboratory, an auditorium, a teacher´s classroom, a library and a bar. The whole program is divided into two leveles. Underneath the strip, we have this program hibridation, locating a public use bar connected to the public and sports area. Also me have the private controled hall that vinculates the school with our social integration center for the minors, and their medical gabinet with the doctor´s offices. On the other hand we have the culture and arts center which is strictly for the public of the neighborhood, with art, dance, drama and music classes and even an auditorium. While beneath the center and the public area we have not only the entrance for vehicles to the integration center, but also the service areas with the laundry room and the kitchen, showing how the functions can be mixed in different levels.

The pavilions Each pavilion can house 40 minors. They are composed by 5 habitational modules and one common use module that has a dinning room, a playroom area, the access to the pavilion with security, and the psychologist´s offices. Also, each pavilion has outdoors space and access both to the perimeter closed circulation system, and to the inside circulation area where the kids can enter without supervition and have access to the common use areas and fields. Juvenile Residency We use the concept of ¨residence¨ to locate the underaged. The resindence area is divided into 4 autonomous pavilions. Three of them are equal (¨standrard¨ pavilions), while the CAD is the admission and diagnose center for when the minors arribe at the center.
30
SOCIAL INTEGRATION CENTER
The habitational modules Each of them has room for 8 minors. It was designed to guarantee a good coexistence between them, thats why we separated the common use space and the studying area in the ground floor, while we located the room and the sectioned bathroom in another floor. Lastly, we added a green terrace that can be used for food production and as a garden, which has been demonstrated to be good to treat drug adiction.
BORDERS The part we found to be the most critical to design of the entire project was the limits between the public space and the interior of the residence where the minors stay. We wanted to maintain certain level of vinculation between both, without compromising the safety of the general public and the kids. We felt this was crucial so that the society lives and ¨deals¨ in some way with the problem, hoping to erase their prejudice towards underage criminals once they are reinserted in society. We solved this bond by creating a height difference between the public and the private areas, separating them with an openned empty space and an enclosed circulation system. In this way, we separate both parts of the program, while still maintaining a distant visual connection.
