A handful of outlets, such as Grosvenor Galleries, Island Art and Framing, Craft Cottage and the National Gallery of Jamaica feature arts and crafts, and impressive pieces can also be found along Kingston’s streets. Aside from the shoppes and boutiques, shoppers can visit Kingston’s many fairs, like Market on The Lawn in Devon House or Kingston Kitchen, a popular fair whose focus is food. In fact, foodies drawn to Jamaica’s heady mix of flavours and spices will find the city is a playground for the senses, from its most humble street corners to its most upscale cafés. For a glimpse into the island’s agricultural dynamic, start at Coronation Market, a giant complex where vendors sell everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to toilettries and car parts. Beyond the markets, annual gatherings like The Jamaica Food & Drink Festival feature celebrated chefs, culinary personalities and live entertainment, along with delicious food. It’s Jamaica’s answer to South Beach Wine & Food Festival. The Kingston Jerk Gospel Music Festival complements the dishes and chefs with the Caribbean’s leading gospel acts. Other events, like Restaurant Week — which spans Kingston, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios — showcase the talent at some of Jamaica’s finest restaurants through selected fixed-price menus at significantly discounted prices.•

“MoBay,” this tropical city in the northwest coast pulsates with the raw vibrancy of everyday Jamaican life. MoBay is home to some of the island’s most scenic beaches, and they’re all part of the Montego Bay Marine Park Fish Sanctuary. Ever-popular Doctor’s Cave Beach has been a great place to enjoy the warm waters of the Caribbean for more than 100 years. By day, there is plenty of action, which may include beach football, a local pastime. Come night-time, it’s the perfect place to find a rocking beach party. A more recently outfitted seaside retreat, Cornwall Beach offers facilities that include showers, snorkel gear, towels, lockers, a bar, resturant and gift shop. Whether it’s for a small company retreat or an event with global appeal, the entire beach is available for public and private functions, setting MoBay in a class of its own when it comes to hosting meetings and conventions. That is, of course, without even taking into account facilities like the 142,000– square–foot oceanfront Montego Bay Convention Centre, which features

meeting, exhibition, ballroom and plenary space. Events for the International Monetary Fund and the Global Leadership Summit have made good use of the centre’s state-of-the-art features.

SIGHTSEEING Steeped in history, mystery and magic, MoBay is home to a number of tantalising destinations. The Rose Hall Great House offers a slice of colonial life that harkens back to the 1770s. Legend has it that the ghost of Annie Palmer still drifts inside the restored Georgian mansion, with its stone-cut walls and eerie hallways. Indulge in her past and learn how she practised voodoo, tortured slaves and managed to kill two husbands before being strangled by her own slave lover. Currently, the property is better known for its two award-winning championship golf courses: Cinnamon Hill and The White Witch Golf Course. The two courses complete the Rose Hall experience for those traveling in groups, whether for business or a family event like a wedding. History lovers will also be delighted by the Bellefield Great House and Gardens, one of the oldest sugar plantations

in Jamaica. This property boasts lush gardens nestled on perfectly manicured lawns that span 10 acres. The great house was built in the 1600s as a British militia outpost. Later, it became the official residence of the Kerr-Jarretts — one of the city’s oldest and most renowned families. Amongst all the stately great houses in the area, St. James Parish Church holds its own appeal. Built between 1775 and 1782 in the shape of a Greek cross, it is widely regarded as one of the island’s finest churches. Families planning a day of excitement can head to the all-new River Bumpkin Farm with Island Routes Caribbean Adventures. Tours of the plantation nestled in the Trelawny forest range from river tubing and kayaking to bicycle adventures and historical excursions.

Adventures is a well-recognised name in the adventure business. It offers a roster of recreational activities for groups large and small, including jungle river tubing on the Great River. At 57 miles in length, the river spans three parishes and is one of the largest on the island. Other water-based activities offered by the veteran outfitter include the kayak safari tour, an exciting option for those who may want to see the rainforest from the water while learning about the Caribbean’s natural ecosystems. Above ground and on dry land, guests with Chukka Caribbean Adventures can also opt for a zip-lining experience through the lush, tropical forest or challenge each other on an ATV trail. Nearby Good Hope Estate is also a popular site for tours that are their own thrilling adventures — think river tubing and zip lining. More relaxed affairs, like a high tea service or a horse-and-carriage ride through the sprawling grounds are also available, making the estate a destination for an all-day affair. Heading south, just 40 minutes outside of MoBay, visitors who are particularly keen to see animals up close should not miss the Dolphin Cove attraction in Lucea, Hanover. The marine attraction, which also operates out of Ocho Rios, organises a variety of encounters with dolphins and other aquatic creatures.

Pick up a few gifts before heading back home at any of the shopping destinations that abound in MoBay. The downtown Crafts Market houses homemade items like straw hats and bags, carved objects and musical instruments. The Old Fort Craft Park offers broad variety of handicrafts hawked by 180 highly competitive vendors — all licenced by the Jamaica Tourist Board — who are open to haggling. The experience serves as its own adventure! From small souvenirs to more substantial items, this is a good place to land a great bargain. Higher end boutiques line The Shoppes at Rose Hall. Amongst the options at this complex, well-priced fine jewellery vendors reign supreme, but shoppers looking for something special can walk out with anything from designer 38 » 2017/2018

perfumes to dreadlocks caps and shot glasses — expect a hearty dose of Jamaican humour on these items. Half Moon Shopping Village is also worth visiting for its original items, such as local designer summer wear, artful crafts and duty-free items. Half way between the Shoppes at Rose Hall and Half Moon Shopping Village, Hospiten Montego Bay is there to address any health needs you may have during your visit to the island. Those looking for the best deals on Jamaican memorabilia — including oneof-a-kind woodwork and hand-painted T-shirts — should head to the Harbour Street Craft Market. Other popular shopping destinations in and around MoBay include City Centre on Fort Street, Holiday Village Shopping Centre on Rose Hall Road, Montego Freeport near the pier and the new Whitter Village in Ironshore. All of these shopping districts have plenty of great food, too. When you are hungry for some tasty local dishes

head to the Hip Strip, where Jamaican and international fare can be found in one same spot. Think: oxtail or stewed peas and jerk chicken, as well as steaks, burgers, milkshakes and banana splits. Given the location, it’s easy to enjoy some of the freshes seafood here, too. Experienced chefs and beloved cooks fuse time-honoured culinary traditions with the recipes and spices of the tropics. The only Hard Rock Cafe on the island, is right in Montego Bay. With a flavourful menu that includes a Legendary® burger and handcrafted cocktails, guests are treated to delicious American fare, as well as iconic rock memorabilia.

NIGHTLIFE MoBay is home to clubs, lounges and bars where DJs spin, and dancing is irresistible. But if a day of adventure has you too wiped to dance, you can still enjoy a relaxed evening out at a jazz bar. Keep an eye out for restaurants that go from dinner spots to lively nightclubs in mere hours.•

PERPETUALLY COOL AND LAIDback, Negril may not be the first place that comes to mind when organising a business event. But the cottages and beachside villas throughout the city are ideally suited for small group gatherings and retreats. Plus, a number of properties — ranging from the intimate Negril Treehouse Resort to the imposing Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton Resort & Spa — do indeed offer a number of more traditional venues that are suitable for any kind of affair. Although it might be Negril’s most famous, Seven Mile Beach is certainly not the only strand worth visiting there. Bloody Bay Beach — or “the other Negril beach,” as many refer to it — is equally beautiful and relaxing.

The majestic Mayfield Falls await about an hour away in Westmoreland. With 21 natural pools and over 52 varieties of ferns, this off-the-beaten-path natural spa is one of Jamaica’s hidden gems. An experienced guide leads a 45-minute climb through mineral-infused waters whilst revealing various secrets of the falls. The Negril Marine Park located at the Negril Environmental Protection Area is a favourite amongst nature lovers, especially those who treasure marine life. The park is divided into several recreational zones and provides a unique opportunity to view the local marine ecosystem. The park encompasses the coastline, mangroves, offshore marine environments and coral reefs. Water lovers can’t miss YS Falls, located in nearby St. Elizabeth. Locally made arts and crafts are delightful options, and in Negril artsy items abound, along the beach or street-side from craft vendors. The local open-air craft market in the middle of town — the Negril Craft Market — has everything from wooden chess sets and hammocks to Rastaman carvings. Amongst the many souvenir shopping destinations in Negril, a good one-stop spot is Time Square Shopping Mall, which carries local sauces, jellies, snacks and Blue Mountain coffee. PORT ANTONIO LOCATED ON JAMAICA’S NORTH Coast, 60 miles from Kingston, Port Antonio is just a short drive from the capital, but a world apart. Thoughts of this sleepy town stir memories of banana exports, river rafting and glamorous Hollywood movie stars from the 1940s. In its former life, Port Antonio was an exclusive retreat for such personalities as Errol Flynn — who once declared that Port Antonio was more beautiful than any woman he had ever known — and his entourage of Hollywood elites. Members of the royal family and industry leaders also made regular visits. Those seeking an authentic Jamaican experience can get that and more in this quiet corner of the island.

A departure from the traditional tourist circuit, Port Antonio is the ideal destination for those yearn to reconnect with nature. There is something magical about waterfalls, and Port Antonio has two of the country’s most breathtaking: Reach Falls and Somerset Falls.

Located on Driver’s River, Reach Falls originates in the John Crow Mountains and flows down to form crystal-clear rock pools on its journey to the bottom. Its main pool was the location of an unforgettable waterfall scene in the 1988 Tom Cruise movie, Cocktail. Somerset Falls is steeped in history. The 97-acre property encompasses lush gardens and “hidden falls” only accessible by boat. Visitors traverse a winding path through a rich tropical landscape — which leads to deep rock pools and natural caves — before witnessing the Daniel River cascading into a 20-foot-deep pool. Surrounded by legends and myths, Blue Lagoon is the island’s largest spring-fed lagoon, plunging to a depth of nearly 180 feet. Ice-cold mountain spring water collides with warm tidal currents there, making a swim in its depths a mystical experience. From Blue Lagoon, you can entrust the services of a knowledgeable river rafting captain for another quintessentially Portie experience: rafting on the Rio Grande. Originally used as a method of transport for produce, most often

bananas, Errol Flynn was the first to enjoy and then promote rafting for fun. Passengers aboard the bamboo rafts are treated to a unique view of the island as they navigate through the bamboo and banana groves. Take a couple bottles of wine or a case of beer to enjoy on your journey or kick back after a dip in the river. Stop at Belinda’s Riverside Canteen to savor some great Jamaican fare served right at the river’s edge. Back on shore at the iconic Frenchman’s Cove, the fresh river mineral spring water merges with the temperate sea, offering an altogether different experience. Those looking for a “wilder” sea experience can head to the Errol Flynn Marina, the island’s premier dock for yachts and boats. It is the only marina in the Caribbean currently equipped to welcome the world’s largest yachts and is home to the Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament. Hundreds of anglers looking to hook deep-water fish participate each October. Winnifred Beach’s offshore reef is perfect for an easy afternoon of snorkelling. Shady trees, white sand and charismatic food vendors make this a great place to lounge the day away. Heading east, Long Bay Beach offers one of the island’s longest uninterrupted stretches of breathtaking coastline, as well as rolling surf, perfect for surfers.

Once you’ve grown tired from your aquatic adventures, it’s time to eat. In Port Antonio, European- and Caribbeaninspired gourmet creations draw from the island’s bountiful local produce and freshly caught seafood. A number of local restaurants — both stand-alone and within hotels — feature talented culinary staffs that take pains to create seasonal menus that are sustainable, organic and absolutely mouthwatering. In addition to the fresh-as-can-be seafood, you can also find simpler dishes that are made with plenty of soul. Homemade burgers, salads, sandwiches, patties and other national staples are made to order and infused with a combination of spices that is distinctly Jamaican and undeniably delicious. In addition to enjoying a satisfying meal, a number of locations also treat guests to entertainment. Calypsoinspired jazz, blues, reggae and other genres pair beautifully with island fare. Whether the venue is stylish and elegant or seaside casual, the food is great and adding live music makes it magical. Local celebrities, like the mento band Jolly Boys, can be seen performing regularly. Despite first appearances, shopping in Port Antonio can also be extremely rewarding. Fine jewellery and other highquality fashion items can often be found at a much lower price point than in other parts of the island. The Royal Mall is a double-decker structure designed in a hodge-podge of architectural styles that range from Gothic to Art Deco. Here you’ll find a variety of boutiques and shops selling stylish beachwear, Blue Mountain coffee, premium rum, cigars, jewellery and Jamaican handicrafts. In the heart of town, Market Square is where you’ll find Musgrave Market, where you can find a fine selection of Jamaican products, from woodcarvings to hand-woven straw items. During your travels you may also want to keep an eye out for members of the Rio Grande Valley Craft co-op. The organisation is comprised of Port Antonio’s local artisans who make and sell their handcrafted goods throughout the area.• OURJAMAICAMAGAZINE.COM

Most Jamaican ATMs (called ABMs) accept international bank cards with Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus or Plus logos.

Major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted throughout the island.

BUSES

CURRENCY

Buses offer a cheap way to get around town, though it might be an unfamiliar experience to many foreigners. Bus stands are rarely marked and vehicles do not follow a strict schedule. Some resorts offer shuttle excursions to popular sites. Check with your hotel’s concierge.

The currency of Jamaica is the Jamaica Dollar. Licenced “cambio” (exchange) centres and commercial banks are accessible in all resort areas. Official currency exchange rates vary daily, so it’s advisable to shop around for the best rate before converting your cash.

CLIMATE

CUSTOMS AND DUTY

Jamaica enjoys a tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures and humid conditions year-round. Average temperature ranges from 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) to 99 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). Though it’s known for its warmth and ample sunshine, the island experiences two rainy seasons from May to June and September to November. Also, hurricanes may pass over the island primarily from June to September. It may rain during your stay, but don’t worry. Most visitors find the short tropical showers provide a welcome respite from the afternoon heat.

United States residents who have been out of the country for 48 hours or more may take home items valued up to US$800 once every 30 days without incurring duty. Adults may include 200 cigarettes, 100 cigars and one litre of alcohol. A second litre of alcohol is allowed duty-free if it is produced by a Caribbean Basin country. Family members who return home together may combine their personal exemptions on a joint declaration. Visit cbp. gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/kbyg/customs_ duty_info.xml for more information. Canadian residents who have been out of the country for more than 48 hours can claim up to CAN$300 worth of goods

HOLIDAYS 2017 On public holidays, all government agencies, schools and most private businesses are closed, and much of the country celebrates. Please plan accordingly. New Year’s Day » January 1 Ash Wednesday » March 1 Good Friday » April 14 Easter Monday » April 17 Labour Day » May 23 Emancipation Day » August 1 Independence Day » August 7 National Heroes’ Day » October 16 Christmas Day » December 25 Boxing Day » December 26

LANGUAGE The official language of Jamaica is English, though most locals speak Patois, a colourful dialect.

SAFETY

» Fun tours and exciting activities await.

without paying duty if they carry the goods with them. After each absence of seven days or more, they can claim up to CAN$800 worth of goods without duty. Except for tobacco products and alcohol, they do not need to have the goods with them. Visit cbsa-asfc.gc.ca for more information. United Kingdom residents 17 or older may take home duty-free two litres of table wine and one litre of spirits or liquors, or two litres of fortified or sparkling wine or other liquors; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars or 250 g of tobacco; 60 cc of perfume and 250 cc of eau de toilette; plus other goods worth up to £145. Travellers cannot group their allowances. For more information, visit hmrc.gov.uk.

DEPARTURE TAX

Max Earle

There is a $37 departure tax that must be paid upon departure. However, most airlines include this tax in their airline tickets.

DRIVING In Jamaica, drivers must keep to the left, although some flexibility is required

to avoid collisions with pedestrians and domestic animals. The speed limit is 30 mph (50 kmph) in urban areas and 50 mph (80 kmph) on highways. Given the mountainous terrain, rural roads are often winding, bumpy and narrow. Visitors can rent cars in most major towns and cities, and, usually, clients must be no less than 25 years old in order to rent. The driver and all passengers are required to wear safety belts, and children under 3 years old must travel in infant carriers or child safety seats. All drivers are required to carry a valid licence. Jamaica recognises valid international driver’s licences, but visitors from North America may use their country’s licence for up to three months per visit, and United Kingdom residents may use theirs for up to one year.

DRUGS

As with any place in the world, you should always remember to follow basic precautions to avoid possible predicaments. Keep luggage in view at all times and your personal effects close to your body; don’t carry large amounts of cash; and avoid wearing expensive jewellery outside of your resort.

TAXIS Taxis are the most convenient mode of transportation, but are not the cheapest. All registered taxis in Jamaica are required by law to have red “PPV” licence plates. Do not to board any taxi operating illegally. Although taxis have metres, drivers rarely use them and prefer to negotiate fares instead. It is best to discuss fare with the driver before boarding the taxi. The fastest and most economical taxis are those locals call “route taxis” — cars that drive a designated course and pick up and drop off passengers at will. These are shared cabs that will usually pack several people willing to go on the same route.

In Jamaica, the use, sale and possession of drugs such as marijuana (ganja), cocaine, crack, ecstasy, heroin and any other controlled substances is illegal. Offenders are subject to severe punishment, including arrest, fines and/or imprisonment.

It is customary to leave a 10 to 15 percent gratuity at restaurants. Make sure to check your bill, as some establishments will include the gratuity in your total.

ELECTRICITY

WATER

Standard electrical service is similar to that of the United States and Canada: 110 volts, 50 cycles AC. However, there is 220 volts service available at some hotels.

All piped water in Jamaica is treated and purified in accordance with international standards. You may drink, bathe and brush your teeth with it.•

JHTA INFORMATION

The Jamaica Hotel &Tourist Association Established in 1961, the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association (JHTA) is the organisation that represents Jamaican hotels and other visitor accommodations, as well as most suppliers of goods and services to the tourism industry. IT TAKES A NETWORK OF

dedicated enterprises, individuals and organisations with vision and strong commitment to grow a world-class industry. Jamaica — our incomparable Caribbean island that is small in size but well-endowed in vision and

accomplishments — has benefitted greatly from building such a network to support its leading industry: tourism. One of the earliest indications that the country was ready to become a leading player in the global tourism industry was the coming together of hoteliers operating on the island and others involved in the business of hospitality to establish the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association in 1961. The purpose was to ensure the effective representation of the interests of its membership at all levels of society — government, private sector, and community. Today, as the mission continues, JHTA works closely with the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies, chief among them, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) and the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), which are responsible for the development and marketing of tourism. JHTA is also a member of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA). OURJAMAICAMAGAZINE.COM

Over the years, JHTA has dedicated itself to ensuring that members are supported, encouraged and facilitated to deliver the finest possible, truly Jamaican visitor experience. This work involves strong advocacy for tourism in all matters relating to the industry. Once upon a time our liberal servings of sun, sea and sand were irresistible drawing cards. Today’s travellers and holiday makers want all that and more, and Jamaica is taking on the challenge. Apart from an attractive range of accommodation options, we are also offering a diverse range of experiences. There is much to see and absorb. You can visit a Maroon village, dance to live reggae music, swing onto an exhilarating zipline ride or meander through the Blue and John Crow Mountains (a UNESCO Heritage Site). Maybe your wish is for gastronomic adventures, in which case you might want to eat pepper shrimp on the

roadside in St. Elizabeth or indulge at any of our fine dining establishments. Other possibilities include hitting the links at a world-class golf course or simply relaxing on the delightful and historic Doctor’s Cave Beach.

ENJOY THE COOL JAMAICAN WAY OF BEING These are just a few of the things you could do. The point is that you could be kept busy for a very long time doing wonderful things in Jamaica. We support diversification to ensure the provision of more and more opportunities for visitors to see and experience Jamaica as Jamaicans see and experience their homeland. We would like our guests to enjoy the food we eat, the way we relax, the way we celebrate and in general the cool and easy Jamaican way of being. JHTA will continue to support our membership’s efforts toward enhancing your experience as a guest in our beautiful island. Do enjoy your time with us.•
