Acutely Artistic At the University of Miami, the Lowe Art Museum has enhanced the campus’ natural landscape by developing a sculpture garden.

Domino Effect BY FASHIONING THE DRAB SLABS BENEATH THE UNIVERSITY METRORAIL STATION INTO OVERSIZED DOMINO GAME TILES, THE CONCRETE LANDSCAPES MIAMI INSTALLATION CREATED BY AUSTRALIAN ARTIST BO DROGA HAS TURNED THE ERSTWHILE LACKLUSTER AREA INTO A PLAYFUL AND INSPIRING SPACE.

NOW, THE UNIVERSITY GREEN, NESTLED BETWEEN SEVERAL OF THE SCHOOL’S MOST PROMINENT BUILDINGS, IS PUNCTUATED BY MORE THAN TWO DOZEN SCULPTURES.

As of April 2019, the parallel rows of pillars that support the tracks adjacent to Ponce de Leon Boulevard by the University of Miami have been carefully painted in black and white by Droga and a team of 12 volunteers. Because they vary in height — from 14 to 18 feet — part of the illusion is to make them all appear uniform in size. A total of 48 pillars hold up the segment of Metrorail tracks between Stanford Drive and University Station. When the project is completed, visitors will be in for an additional treat, as Droga says he has included a message within the pattern of the domino pieces.

Whimsical projects like this summer’s Sun Stories (on the cover) enliven Giralda Plaza, while permanent sculptures adorn Miracle Mile and surrounding streets. THE TRUTH IS MOVING WITH HANK WILLIS THOMAS’ CONCEPTUAL WORK SPRINKLED THROUGHOUT CORAL GABLES, THE CITY FOLLOWED THE ARTIST’S STUDY OF THOUGHT AT THE INTERSECTION OF IDENTITY, HISTORY AND POP CULTURE, AND INVITED THE PUBLIC IN ON THE CONVERSATION. The Truth Is I Welcome You is a two-part installation that consists of three-dimensional speech and thought bubbles on display along Miracle Mile and brightly colored sculptures made of rolled steel placed in key locations across the city. While the overhead bubbles on Miracle Mile are temporary, the aim is to provoke permanent shifts in thought. The signs appear in 22 languages to reflect the local population and are excerpts from the poem “The Truth Is I Am You” written by Thomas in collaboration with Ryan Alexiev. The steel sculpture benches are now a permanent fixture of the City’s growing public art landscape.

Suncycling, a beloved South Florida chain, operates a friendly and accessible store on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, offering rentals of bikes built for the road, for gravel, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and even triathlon bikes. BUY OUT But don’t leave the Miracle Mile area just yet. This “miraculous” stretch of Coral Way is designed for window shoppers — and unless your bike is towing a trailer for your purchases, that’s exactly what you are. Sure, you could probably wear some shiny new bling from local jewelry shops Jae’s Jewelers or Snow’s Jewelers on your ride home, but the biggest business on the Mile is bridal. The street is lined with shops selling wedding gowns and other special-event attire. If you’re a fan of Say Yes to the Dress, you’ll want to slow down and enjoy the view.

ast year, when the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) included the smart city initiatives in Coral Gables within its Global City Teams Challenge, the announcement reflected what the local tech community has known for a while: Coral Gables is developing into a tech hot spot. Those in the industry paid attention when the city launched the Coral Gables Smart City Hub as a public platform for exploring and downloading open data, discovering and building apps, and engaging to solve important local issues.

Noting that Florida was the birthplace of household staples like air-conditioning and Gatorade — among numerous other firsts — Crain’s Chicago Business reported that tech has long been in the state’s DNA. COMMUNITY MINDED There are plenty of developers building structures, but in Coral Gables, the movement is toward building community.

o the uninitiated, real estate development might sound like a joyless job. You might envision stacks of paperwork, navigating mazes of city codes and laws, or crunching numbers on an endless spreadsheet. But according to Brent Reynolds, CEO and managing partner of NP International (NPI), building a place is about one thing: people. “There is a quote I commonly use when it comes to describing NPI’s approach to any project: ‘We’re far more passionate about creating experiences than just building structures,’” says Reynolds. “Creating a space where people feel a sense of community is top on our list of those experiences.” A mission to bring people together drives the design of Gables Station, an NPI mixed-use development project that combines residences with commercial and public spaces that’s rising in Coral Gables’ McFarland neighborhood. For starters, the general design of the project was inspired by the neighborhood itself. “After getting a deeper understanding of the rich history of the community, we

felt their story not only needed to be told but also preserved,” says Reynolds. “We produced a film on the neighborhood, entitled Graceful Voices, which was aired by PBS nationally. We further integrated their story into our Public Art curation for the open space of Gables Station.” Other efforts toward thoughtful development include organizing the design around a central area, a “natural space where people can interact organically,” according to Reynolds. From there, residents can head to a wellness center, a local shop or restaurant, or even hop on the nearby public transportation to get to other parts of town easily. “Our properties are built with the intent to bring tenants, residents and guests together to share extraordinary experiences as a familiar community,” Reynolds says. Unique to Gables Station is its integration with The Underline, a linear park and community space located beneath the Metrorail line that’s been planned by the County and is under development in sections. “The Underline will connect communities and create new environments which do not exist today for people to

developers prioritized community wishes like maintaining the Mediterranean Revival architecture of the area and making certain there was ample space for recreation, arts and culture. The Plaza also honors the unique history of its location. Originally designed by George Merrick as an area to house artisans and craftsmen, the “Crafts Section” of Coral Gables was once ruled from the Arts Center building, built circa 1925. That building still stands, and will be incorporated into The Plaza’s public space. Agave Ponce LLC, the company developing The Plaza, shares Reynolds’ community-centric philosophy. “No development can succeed without a strong partnership with the community it lives in,” reads its mission statement. According to these local developers, creating superior neighborhoods is all about balancing what already exists with an educated sense of what’s to come, which sounds much simpler than it is. But with creativity and an emphasis on quality of life, these companies are changing the way neighborhoods develop, and that is very Coral Gables!

Coral Gables is renowned for its visual appeal, which is matched by its healthy dose of community-minded projects and efforts.

BY DREW LIMSKY hen people think of the City Beautiful movement of the early 20th century, they flash to cities like Washington D.C., with its celebrated boulevards and circles. This ambitious urban planning initiative migrated to other American hubs, but the results were nowhere more successful and distinctive than in Coral Gables, with its storied, near-uniform Mediterranean Revival style. Any discussion of the nonprofit scene and the betterment of society — at the local level — must begin with the way Coral Gables looks and how it has maintained that distinctive characteristic since its incorporation in 1925. Such a fine example of urban planning, as well as the maintenance it requires, doesn’t happen by accident. One of the country’s first planned communities requires protection, both from government and its own growing population. The City’s first historic preservation ordinance, established in 1973 — and its expansions in 1984 and 1990 — led to a resident-based safeguard: the Historic Preservation Board. The Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, followed in 1991. Its goal is to

Smaller-scale organizations like the Coral Gables Garden Club are likewise committed to further embellishing The City Beautiful. Not only does the club provide scholarships to college students studying horticulture, but its seasonal projects include teaching children the value of trees on Arbor Day, bringing the joys of flower arranging to retirement homes and maintaining the Coral Gables Library Butterfly Garden. Coral Gables’ commitment to preserving its architecture and visual appeal is representative of its robust and responsible community-mindedness. The Coral Gables Community Foundation is a case in point: Many people and entities would like to make their philanthropic dollars work for the community, but need guidance.

Early 1900S. City Beautiful Movement 1921. Merrick amasses 3,000 acres of land, which he uses to create a unique suburb, featuring all the elements of the City Beautiful Movement. 1924. The quarry used for local projects is reconfigured as Venetian Pool by artist and designer Denman Fink and architect Phineas Paist. 1925. Coral Gables Congregational Church is dedicated; the University of Miami is chartered; the City of Coral Gables is incorporated; and the Chamber of Commerce is established. 1926. The Biltmore Hotel opens; Merrick’s $75 million home development project is blown away by the Great Miami Hurricane in September. 1936. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is established. 1940S. Thousands of WWII soldiers occupy unused Coral Gables buildings, including The Biltmore Hotel, which becomes an Army hospital. 1947. The Miracle Theatre, designed by architect William H.
