Inspiring Wellness From down & out to out & out awesome!

Hello, my name is Kate, I’m

My real downward spiral gained momentum in my early twenty’s, I had two daughters under two and I was all alone. Sure I had family and friends but when I was by myself it was just me and my demons. I had been a bit of a party girl, I didn’t exercise and paid little attention to what food my children and I consumed. Skip forward a few years, add another child and a toxic relationship and whalla you have a recipe for disaster. I gained a huge amount of weight, drank more, smoked more, ate more and cared less about any of it than I had before. I had already suffered from anxiety and depression but now it consumed me. After five years of this selfabuse I worked up the strength to leave my then partner and embark on a new chapter of my life. You know the saying hitting rock bottom? It really does exist and it has no mercy. I was broke, depressed, scared, overwhelmed and had no idea what I needed to do to get better, there was no quick fix. Most days you could find me curled up Page 4

34 yrs old, I have three children 14, 13 and 10, I’m a single mum, I work part time, run my own business and am studying a Dip in Life Coaching. If someone had of said to me 6 years ago that this is where I would be in my life now, I would not have believed them. The reason being, I used to be in a pretty dark place.

in the foetal position in a corner of my kitchen sobbing uncontrollably or self-medicating myself with some cheap cask wine. This was actually a blessing as now I had no choice but to claw my way back up. It took firstly admitting I had a problem then accessing help from an agency that provided support and counselling, joining a women’s writing group, seeking professional help with my addictions, a lot of soul searching, wrong turns, hurdles and a lot of mistakes along the way. Each one bringing me closer to where I yearned to be, healthy, happy and the best mum I can be.

It wasn’t one thing that changed my life it was a combination of things. With all that behind me I stand here today with more dreams and goals than ever before. What I have achieved so far is I am now a non-smoker, I have control over the alcohol I consume it no longer controls me, I am 30 kilos lighter in weight and probably lost double that in emotional baggage J.

1 am a fitness instructor and I am physically, emotionally and mentally available for my children and myself. In the words of Emerson “Life is a journey not a destination” and I know I have so much more to learn. I hope by reading my story that a spark of inspiration ignites in your soul. Whoever you are and whatever positive, life changing, inspirational dream you desire, what are you waiting for?? A sign? Someone else to do it for you? A miracle? And just think you may be blessed enough to touch someone else’s life along the way.

A word from the Good Doctor The Happiness Trap

W

orking as a General Practitioner for the past fifteen years, I have become aware of the high degree of anxiety and stress in our society. One of the biggest causes of stress and unhappiness I have found is that people get caught up in the treadmill to get bigger cars, bigger houses, and other stuff. Once caught in this rat race, it’s harder and harder to get out and it’s often the recipe for long-term misery.

Finally, be prepared to change those aspects of your life that aren’t contributing to your happiness and that are within your control: downsize your working hours and material expectations, and upgrade the time you spend with family and friends or volunteering. Forget about keeping up with the Jones and make your life’s work being happy.

Many people stuck on this path and intent on putting in long hours to make money to fund these “goals” may in 1. Reassess your values and goals fact be neglecting their family, friendships, their hobbies 2. Change stressful aspects of your life and their creative pursuits in the process, the things that are within your control that actually make them happy. 3. Improve your interactions with friends, There is a popular notion that happiness means feeling family, staff and colleagues good and being in a state of pleasure and contentment. 4. Brighten your environment I like the analogy that happiness is like having children: they make you happy some of the time, but there’s 5. Downsize your stress and upgrade your enjoyment also•a lot of frustration getting there. Happiness is about experiencing the full range of emotions and having a life 6. Live in the moment and practise mindfulness with meaning. 7. Acknowledge negative thoughts and feelings How you can escape the trap: but don’t let them overwhelm you. By becoming aware of your true values and goals, you 8. Practise gratitude and appreciation can enter a state of “mindfulness”. This is a mental state 9. Lighten up and have some fun. of existing in the present that has you empowered to engage fully, get more out of your everyday 10. Eat healthily, exercise and sleep enough interactions, and acknowledge any feelings of anxiety and stress but not allow them to overwhelm you. I have found that it helps to•make space for negative thoughts, learn to breathe through difficult feelings and learn that struggle is part of attaining your goal, to be the person you want to be, to live a full human life.

The Path to Wellness FIBROMYALGIA WELLBEING – A personal account.

My `diagnosis` of Fibromyalgia (FMS) just over 4

enhanced communication skill etc). I worked with myself to change my thinking – to become more optimistic. Over time, I also sought out a range of interventions, which enhanced my energy levels, decreased stress (physical and emotional) and began to give me peace of mind. My sense of calm increased and I continue to follow this new path. I realised I had nothing to lose and much to gain by exploring many options. These `complementary` options include – pilates, yoga, Tai chi, kinesiology, massage, meditation, uplifting music, crystal therapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture, angel therapy (Doreen Virtue), positive affirmations and self healing (Louise Hay),positive and enlightening reading (books, quotes etc), developing my spirituality, Reiki, mindfulness, prayer, stress management – aromatherapy, incense, candles etc. My greatest realisation has been that we can remain empowered. We can be active participants in our state of wellness. I discovered that whilst we may need the help of medicine and `pharmalogical approaches`, it is often in addition to other therapies and interventions. Most importantly, our greatest assets are our strength, our sense of self or character and our spirit. These will be the source of our greatest power and healing. Nobody or nothing can take these away. We may just need to look deeper within to find them!

years ago, jolted me into a new reality. FMS has provided opportunities I`ve chosen to use in a positive way, to enhance self acceptance and personal growth. I eventually began to make choices that focused on balancing the physical – psychological – spiritual aspects – for ME. I`m not a qualified Health Professional and encourage individuals to seek appropriate guidance, advice and support. I also encourage people to find their own path, one that is right for them. Remain positive and hopeful. Believe in yourself and trust that the strength you`ll need will be within you to help you through this journey. FMS is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders (affecting around 2% of population); and accounts for approx. 25% of new referrals to rheumatologist specialists. Diagnosis can be complex and drawn out. Sometimes termed `CMI= chronic multi-system illness, with far reaching symptoms. The painful effects on the individual(s) are greatly underestimated and often misunderstood. Although this systemic/multi system disorder has no known cure, there are a range of `Pharmalogical` and `Non Pharmalogical approaches available to assist with long term management. I continue to use a combination of approaches – to both improve poor health (under functioning systems) and address long term management. My GP has openly embraced an `integrative` approach and works alongside my Naturopath. For a while (in my case) the medical term `hypopituitarism` was utilised. Replacement of all pituitary hormones was implemented (thyroid, ovaries, adrenals etc). Sleep disorders were also of prime importance. Alongside this, nutritional deficiencies and infections were targeted. However, I realised that my recovery had to reach further than medicine. Stabilising and correcting my physical health was a slow process and required patience. I needed more than medicine alone, to improve my ability to cope. I gained many useful skills via a DEE CAMPBELL psychologist (mindfulness, self awareness/acceptance, Connect with Dee on Facebook`fibromyalgia wellness’

Water Vs. Soft Drink Are your drinking habits making you FAT?

Many of us use “soft drinks” to quench our thirst rather than water. This includes coke/cola, lemonade, lemon squash, energy drinks (Red bull, Mother Etc), and Sports drinks (e.g. Powerade) to name a few. These drinks contain a large amount of sugar, or energy (calories), which over time can contribute to dental issues and weight gain. Most people can have a small amount of soft drink occasionally in conjunction with a healthy diet, but they are unhealthy to drink every day especially for people who are inactive or trying to lose weight. Just like we have JUNK food, so these sugary drinks that don’t provide essential nutrients can be considered JUNK drinks!

Water, better for your waistline, better for your budget! When thirsty, it’s good to remember the body really only needs water to survive – which is the cheapest and healthiest option! It contains no calories (Energy, sugar, and fat free!). To be at our best it’s ideal we drink approximately six to eight glasses of water each day. Did you know that approximately 75% of us are dehydrated right now? Are you making the common mistake of confusing your bodies feeling of thirst for hunger? Next time you’re feeling hungry after having eaten try a good glass of water. If you’re struggling with your weight, give junk drinks the flick and add some extra water to your day. Plenty of fresh water everyday makes maintaining your healthy weight so much easier.

Check out the Sugar content in Coke! Jacki Evans Dietitian, Playford Council Jevans@playford.sa.gov.au One day, someone showed me a glass of water that was half full. And he said, "Is it half full or half empty?" So I drank the water. No more problem. Alexander Jodorowsky Image above care of www.sugarstacks.com

The Truth about Chiropractic Why Visit Your Chiropractor?

Every day I see patients in dire straits because they have put-off treatment due to a misconception about Chiropractics. Here I will address some of these common misconceptions so that you can make an informed decision about whether it is appropriate to visit the Chiropractor. Chiropractic is a complementary healthcare profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions affecting the muscles and joints. It is characterised by manual adjustments to the spine or joints which acts to improve the function of the nervous system and facilitate healing. Chiropractors study for a minimum of 5 years at university and much of our training is focussed on conditions of the spine. Chiropractors are typically associated with treating back pain, neck pain and headaches but Chiropractic is effective at treating any joint in the body. The benefits of Chiropractic can also include improved sleep, decreased tension, injury prevention, improved posture and increased energy levels.

Chiropractic adjustments may be, on occasions, uncomfortable but they should not be painful. About one in three patients experience some post-treatment soreness after a Chiropractic adjustment. This is typically described as a mild ache that last 1-2 days and is a normal side-effect of treatment that occurs as the body is adjusting to the changes occurring in the muscles and joints.

Page 12

Chiropractic is drug-free and noninvasive and a very safe form of treatment. However there are always risks associated with treatment, as with any form of medical treatment. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record with the risk of stroke from cervical manipulation estimated at approximately 0.0001% . To put this in perspective for you studies have shown Chiropractic treatment to be 250 times safer than the use of antiinflammatory drugs for the treatment of back or neck pain.
