What’s been holding you back? How ThetaHealing® dissolves subconscious blocks When I tell people I do ThetaHealing®, I commonly get asked “what on earth is Theatre Healing?” No, not theatre healing, but Theta Healing! You know the brainwaves Alpha, Beta, Theta, Delta? Theta Healing is an energetic healing technique that uses the Theta brainwave frequency to empower the subconscious mind. In a Theta state, we are able to release and change limited belief systems and dissolve blockages held within our body and mind.
including stress, trauma and depression, fears and phobias, and negative relationship or family issues.
ThetaHealing® was developed in the 1990s by Vianna Stibal, a naturopath, massage therapist and intuitive reader who found that by entering into a Theta state she was able to heal herself from a life-threatening cancer, and further transform her life. Since then she has used her technique to heal clients from her own practice in the USA and has trained other practitioners Let’s look at it simplistically. We all experience life around the world. differently. We are shaped by the people in our life, our culture and our experiences (both positive and Please note that Theta Healing is not meant to replace negative). Subconscious beliefs also shape our health medical advice but instead is best worked hand in hand and behaviour. Positive subconscious programs help with it. us move forward while negative ones hold us back. We all have patterns of behaviour, some good and some detrimental to our wellbeing. Perhaps it’s always picking the wrong partner, feeling powerless to deal with our family issues, or overacting to the “little things”. We don’t want to behave in that manner, but don’t know how to change it. This is where Theta Healing can help by addressing the causes of why we continue to function this way. These behaviours or blockages may be caused by factors such as emotional repression, fears and traumas. Theta Healing enables you to identify the source of these blockages easily and release the associated negative and limited beliefs. So what’s so special about the ‘Theta’ brainwaves? The Theta level of brainwave activity is associated with sleep, deep relaxation and visualisation. Here we are naturally dreaming, or in a very deep meditative or highly creative state with access to the unconscious mind. Theta brainwave levels allow for integration of experiences & change in behaviour at the unconscious level. We can tap straight into the subconscious! During a basic session of Theta Healing, the practitioner will use muscle testing (a technique of kinesiology) to identify the patient’s limiting subconscious beliefs. Then, while in a Theta state, help the patient determine the underlying cause/s, and reprogram the beliefs in order to facilitate healing. Theta Healing may be used to help treat problems Page 4

Spring ~ Summer 2014
A word from the Good Doctor "All About Panic..." We all experience anxiety, as it is a normal emotion, very much related to fear. It is often about something that might happen in the future, and may be described as a feeling of impending danger. Anxiety is actually there to protect us, so that we can respond to danger when needed. But sometimes it becomes a problem when it is persistent and severe, or interfering with our daily lives. We might experience generalized anxiety and find ourselves worrying about many things consistently, or we might experience more acute episodes of panic, with heart palpitations, breathlessness, sweating, nausea or light headedness. In fact, 14.4% of Australian adults will experience significant anxiety over one year, and 1.4-2.9% will experience recurrent panic episodes. When talking with a client about panic, we find out more about the panic attacks and the person’s background, and we do some tests to rule out medical causes of the symptoms. We also check whether the panic attacks are leading to disability, and in particular avoidance of doing usual activities. For example, if a person has a panic attack in the car, then they might avoid driving, or if they have one at the shops, they may not want to go to those shops again for fear of having another one. It is important to find out the underlying fears in panic, as some people worry that the physical symptoms are signs of illness, or that they might pass out, or even die. Some people worry about how other people are going to react when they have a panic attack, and that they might not be supportive. The first thing that can help is information, as it can relieve fear. The individual can understand what is happening in their bodies and minds, and myths such as, “I’m going to lose it,” can be debunked. There are a range of psychological treatments that can be helpful, including working with thoughts that are not helpful, and relaxation and breathing techniques. In particular, abdominal or slow breathing is helpful. Remember that the panic does not define who you are, and that there are times when you have taken a stand against the panic. Some people find carrying a written card in their purse/wallet useful, with words such as; “I know this is panic and I know what to do, breathe
slowly and relax, it will pass and I will be fine.” If you need some assistance, see your GP and they may suggest that you see a psychologist or counsellor. Looking after your general lifestyle (nutrition, exercise, sleep), doing yoga or tai chi, and thinking kindly about yourself can also assist. There are some helpful resources, including: Ÿ “Release Your Worries, A guide to letting go of stress and anxiety,” by C Howell and M Murphy Ÿ See my website www.drcatehowell.com.au for further information on anxiety and upcoming webinar series on “Release Your Worries.” Ÿ (www.cci.health.wa.gov.au): provides a wide variety of mental health information and resources. Ÿ Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD) www.crufad.org/index.php/about has a wide range of information and resources.

Get Active this Summer! No two people are the same and no two people have the same journey. Find a good Trainer who will do more for you than just accommodate this, they should inspire you to continue, nurture your growth and work WITH your needs and your lifestyle. Weight/resistance training is king- Even for girls!!! Training should be functional! Does a treadmill or a x-trainer help you to carry around your 15-20kg child on one hip whilst carrying 5 shopping bags and using your leg to kick the door open? Or will you put your back/hips out at some point that then prohibits you from doing any exercise at all, even the treadmill... Did you know- MUSCLE helps your cardiovascular fitness? Did you also know the wrong type/too much CARDIOVASCULAR training burns off your muscle? Knowing the difference and how to overcome this, will maximise your benefits.
omega6 ratio of 1:1… scarily an egg by today’s minimum standard has a ratio of as high as 1:50 Too much omega 6 is highly inflammatory & arguably one of the biggest pre-cursers to ALL dis-ease in the human body. All animal products in their natural form have this balance in perfect check- human interference and what I like to call ‘AGRO- farming practices change this… GO ORGANIC!
My HOT TIPS Ÿ Count nutrients instead, and eat all of the colours of the rainbow. Ÿ No-BODY got fat from plants- ever! Ÿ Learn about your body and what food it feels good on, try keeping a food diary, how’s your hunger? Gas/bloating? Cravings? Energy levels? Ÿ Drink .. A lot of water (tea and coffee doesn't count)
Here’s the clue- ‘cardio’ is for HEART health, not fat loss, MUSCLE raises your metabolism and in turn, burns fat.
Ÿ
Here’s another tip - If you starve yourself or calorie restrict and aren’t listening to your individual needs, you’re starving your muscle.
Ÿ Get enough
And the most important thing....NUTRITION IS KEY!!!! Without proper ' actual food' learning the above, is frankly a waste of time... "Calories V's nutrients' - it's NOT the same thing! Do you have a support network? THIS IS NOT YOUR TRAINER- they only see you a couple hours a week max! What about the rest of the hours?
Ÿ
minimum of twice per week in the sunshine, it releases serotonin to Repair-Rebuild-Restore.
Ÿ Surround yourself with helpful, like-minded people. Studies have proven the benefit of ‘community’
Shani Jae PrideauxHolistic Lifestyle Coach & Director of ShaniJae Fitness
If your community keeps telling you things like, ‘just one won’t kill you’ or ‘don’t turn into one of those health freaks now will you’ … Ask yourself, who are they serving by trying to influence you? Find out where your food comes from... 2 different eggs are not the same. A ‘Normal Egg’ by normal, I mean organic, free range, from a pastured hen egg (you know like the ones our grandparents ate) has an omega3-

Interview with a medium
Hey we are all human and when one is grieving, when we are hurting or angry and are in pain, we are not always focused or connected to our memories or our past. Wow what a wonderful validation from a child who wanted to make a loving connection with their parents.
A Medium is a person who has the ability to channel information from those souls who have moved into the dimension of the afterlife, as the Egyptians would refer to it. It is possible by having an open mind and an open heart. It works by tapping into and by listening to your 6th sense, which we all have the ability to do. The proof is in the delivery of the information to the recipient. The recipient knows the truth, the facts related to that person’s life and their personal connection. Although in saying that not always does the recipient have the full story and many times on reflection and consultation with other family members or friends the truth will emerge through further consideration and discovery. In my experience the information is very accurate.
Interesting enough both parents had a healthy scepticism in the area of medium-ship and the afterlife. It certainly left them with another perspective that was meaningful and loving. Through honouring that life with passing on messages of love, comfort, healing and even laughter to love ones looking for those connections. And when I say those who are looking to make those connections, it is often the deceased who is desperate to impart their message of love and comfort to those who are physically hurting. My experience after a reading and the feedback from the majority of recipients is one of a feeling of calm, lightness, clarity, relief, love and of closure. The release of fear, guilt, judgment, criticism, confusion and other unhealthy emotions are often healed and in turn sleep improves and the quality of life returns. That is a big step forward on the path of ‘Wellness’. My intention is to bring the highest possible positive outcome to all those who come through my door to assist with healing for all parties concerned, those who are in this realm and those who have moved on.
Di Goulding The best way to answer this involved question is to look to the facts and to the way you ‘feel’ with the information being presented.
Clairvoyant spiritual healer and Medium www.inspiredbyspirit.com.au
Although, I have had people very disconnected to what is being presented at the time. They don’t find any connection at all to what is being channelled through. However, one example I find appropriate to share here, was of a Mum whose adult child had passed tragically. They were showing me a time when they were very happy, a time associated with a white car with a sunroof, very specific info. Mum’s answer to that was this child never owned a white car, let alone one with a sunroof. Next time we spoke she informed me she shared with her husband the channelled info and he reminded her there was a short time when this child did own a white car, with a sunroof!

Spring ~ Summer 2014
The Healing Power in Your Hands We all have a healing gift. Have you ever felt that you might be able to heal? Heal yourself, other people, plants, animals? It’s true – you can. Healing isn’t the same as curing. It’s said that the only thing you can cure is bacon! Healing, by contrast, is “to make whole” – the experience of wholeness. This experience can be known regardless of the state of the body. For example, during my mother’s last weeks alive, she experienced a wholeness, completeness, in a completely new way. She was experiencing healing in the last few weeks of her life. We all have a healing gift. It’s not simply for professionals. Just look at the way parents assist their children – “a kiss will make it better: let’s put a bandaid on that”. Within minutes, the child can change from miserable to cheerful. That’s healing. Whilst many spiritual traditions have a hands on healing technique, in the last 50 years it’s become clear that the use of the hands for healing can be learnt by anyone. Dolores Kreiger, founder of Therapeutic Touch, has taught countless nurses in the USA and elsewhere. She’s conducted research which shows that people recover quicker from surgery and leave hospital sooner when they receive Therapeutic Touch. This type of healing is now becoming widely accepted. Healing techniques are also possible which don’t involve a hands on approach. These methods work upon the human energy field, knowing that a change in energy will, over time, result in a change in the body. Remember a time when you relaxed in warming sunshine and soaked it in. Or had a phone call with a friend when you were upset that was helpful. These are examples of energy field changes. There are a number of energy field healing techniques in current use. For instance, Reiki and Attunement. Reiki is very popular and involves the practitioner channelling Life Force energy through the hands which are placed on the body at specific points. The flow of energy from practitioner to client encourages energy field changes. Attunement is a non-touch technique focusing on balancing the endocrine glands. These glands are the most powerful tissue by weight in the body. They are focal points of potent energy which radiate the healing energy of Spirit in specific ways.
Page 10
Welcoming the energy field changes that happen with these Reiki and Attunement sessions, your life becomes more “on track” and you feel a sense that “all is well” – regardless of the personal issues you might have on your plate. Maintaining that “all is well” experience leads to a more joyful and fulfilling life. You learn to activate the healing power in your hands. Learning about Attunement or Reiki are some of the ways that thousands of people worldwide have discovered their natural ability.

Questions for our Naturopath Dear Deb, I keep hearing different stories about whether or not we need health supplements like multivitamins. On the one side there are people saying we do need them and on the other side people are saying it’s not worth it and it’s expensive urine. It’s very confusing and I was wondering what the answer is? Mary Q Dear Mary It is a pretty big topic. Recent studies are showing that the fresh food we get from the big supermarkets are not containing as many nutrients as they did 50 – 80 years ago. There are several reasons for this, the simplest being that often the food is stored for long periods of time and the nutrients decrease over this time so that by the time we buy them, there is less nutrition available.
For these reasons I do subscribe to the ideal that supplementation is useful. However, if you want to make sure that you are getting the nutrients you need, then it is important to be properly assessed. For some people who need to get healthy, if they don't have any underlying conditions then focusing on the best diet for your needs can be enough. To find out what foods are best in your body, it’s a great idea for you to be assessed. For most people who have underlying conditions such as food sensitivities, it is a sign that the body needs support to function properly so that it can break down the nutrients from food properly. In these cases proper supplementation means that the body heals quicker and can become able to manage on its own without supplementation sooner.
As a society, we eat a lot more processed foods than ever before. They’re quick and easy but they contain little nutrition. Many of our cooking methods destroy nutrients in foods. We are surrounded by an environment that taxes our bodies and use up our nutrients more quickly than we can put them in. More and more people are suffering from sub clinical ill health. That means, when you go to the Doctor, they do some tests and it all comes back normal, but you know you don't feel well. Most of this is caused by poor nutrition. More and more people are developing conditions that were rare in the past, such as eczema, asthma, food sensitivities, digestive disorders, fatigue, viral conditions. All of which can be caused by underlying malnutrition. Even people who eat healthy diets, may not be absorbing the nutrients that they are eating. You can eat a near perfect diet but if your digestion is not breaking down the nutrients and absorbing them, then you will become malnourished.

........................................................................................ To get the most from massage it’s important to understand the different types or modalities and the specific benefit of each. This edition we’re featuring:
Remedial Massage Remedial massage is a treatment modality that manipulates the soft tissues of the body, including movement for a specific therapeutic effect, rather than a general therapeutic benefit. It uses relevant techniques, oils, moisturiser or massage wax and movements according to the client’s needs and feedback. This leads to the healing process which of course begins at the cellular level, aiding soft tissues of the body, including repairing and restoring functional integrity and
movement back to health. Remedial massage is a deep massage done by a trained massage therapist, to create the conditions for the body’s return to normal health after injury or with muscular-skeletal disorders. It is used to treat chronic muscularskeletal imbalances, strains, sprains, broken bones, bruising or any injury where the skin is intact .deep tissue massage removes blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions left after injury, speeds up recovery and encourages more complete healing. Remedial massage is also used for conditions created by lifestyle for example-repetitive strain injury and back pain. It is designed to increase the flow of blood & lymph, particularly in the injured areas. It is often successful where other forms of treatment have failed. Some common conditions that can be successfully treated are: Achilles tendon tendonitis, shin splints, groin strain, cartilage damage, tennis
elbow, frozen shoulder, hamstring injuries, plantar fasciitis, scar tissue, adhesions, whiplash, carpel tunnel syndrome & repetitive strain injury. It can also be used to treat more general muscle soreness from over exertion. Taking the time to find the best massage modality and the best massage therapist to meet your unique needs can greatly increase the benefits of your treatment.

Acupuncture Must be experienced to be believed The Chinese believe that all forms of life are controlled by movements of energy. There are two basic movements. One is outward moving, and is called ‘Yin’. The other is inward moving, and is called ‘Yang’. When an outward movement reaches its limit, it changes direction and starts to move inwards. Similarly, when an inward movement reaches it limit, it changes direction and starts to move outwards. The operation is like a pump, and this constant pumping movement may be seen in almost every form of life-the human heart, for example. Understanding the idea of Yin and Yang is important when looking at acupuncture, which is a method of healing that goes back thousands of years. The theory is this. In each person there is a life force, and this life force consists of both Yin and Yang. Yang is the force which tends to increase activity, and Yin is the force which tends to produce calm. The health of the body depends on the correct balance between the two. If this balance is not maintained, then the body becomes sick. The Chinese also discovered that the forces of Yin and Yang move around the body along certain lines. There are twenty-six of these lines called meridians. Each one is connected to a different part of the body and has a different function. When the body dies, these lines disappear. Acupuncture first started when the Chinese made an important discovery. They saw that soldiers who had been wounded by arrows were sometimes cured of illnesses from which they had suffered for a long time. It seemed that if a hole was made in the skin, and a needle placed in the hole, then certain diseases could be cured. But the hole had to be made in the right place and have the right depth. The earliest acupuncture needles were made of stone. These would have been used when the first books were written about acupuncture 4,500 years ago. The Chinese later used needles made of bone, and then of different metals such as iron and silver, Today, they are made of steel. They first believed that the needle itself cured the disease. This was before it was discovered that there are certain points along the Yin-Yang lines which are connected to various parts of the body, such as the stomach and the heart.

There are over eight hundred different points in the body. The acupuncturist examines the patient and decides which parts of his or her body are over-active or underactive-in other words, the practitioner finds out where there is too much or too little Yin or Yang. When the acupuncture points have been found, needles are placed in the skin at various depths. They are then left there for different periods of time, which might be as short as a few seconds. A major recent development has been the use of acupuncture in medical operations. In such cases it is used instead of drugs or gas, in order to take away the pain felt by the patient. In china today, this use of acupuncture is extremely common in both major and minor operations, even operations on the heart.
