Welcome

W

elcome to our first Winter edition of Living Wellness.

It’s been thrilling to witness Living Wellness grow and flourish. In this edition we’re super proud and excited to be showcasing over 30 passionate local wellness businesses and to be distributing 2500 free copies throughout the community. A huge expansion from our initial 750 copies and 11 local wellness businesses when Living Wellness began last Spring. There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come. It is certainly the case with Living Wellness. Wellness is a hot topic as more and more people awaken to the realisation that what really matters most in life is the way we feel. The way we feel about ourselves, about our lives and about each other and our world. In essence ‘wellness’ is just that. How well do you really feel? It’s more than just health or just lifestyle. It is the totality of feeling about all aspects of human life on Earth. I’ve been reminded lately, wellness is not about perfection, it’s not about getting it right. Wellness is about learning to tune into our body and our inner voice and starting to live in a way that truly feels good as we live it. Letting go of guilt and obligations, letting go of keeping up appearances. Moving through our fears and limiting beliefs to a place we can truly be ourselves in the world. Winter is a great time for self reflection. The cold and the wet offer a perfect opportunity to find a warm place and turn our attention inward. To check in with ourselves about how life is really feeling for us. We can become aware of what positive changes and tweaks we can make to have things feel even better going forward. As well we can take the time to savour and appreciate all that is already great. In this edition of Living Wellness you’ll find a range of interesting and inspiring wellness ideas and information. Our directory is again filled with passionate wellness professionals whose work it is to support you in feeling more yourself, more of the time.

A word from the Good Doctor No Neutral Gear in Health

I

t’s a rare thing for a doctor to be asked to write about This is where we the health professionals can help. Find wellness, normally we are asked to write or speak about someone you can talk to, someone you trust, it is sickness and normally when people visit our clinics it is sickness, not searching for wellness that generally brings them there.

It may sound trite but wellness is not the absence of sickness, it’s not a passive process and looking for wellness may occur whether one is sick or not. Wellness is actively looking for health at whatever time of life one finds oneself.

Its basis is simple - eat well, sleep well, exercise moderately, avoid obviously harmful activity and consciously build a loving network in one’s family and at important to know the strengths and potential risks of any least a caring network with friends, colleagues and treatment; nothing that is active treatment is without acquaintances. potential side effects. Birthing Wellness No not jeweller……Doula

The name Doula is unusual, derived from a Greek word meaning ‘woman’s servant’. Many moons ago the role of the head servant was to go with and support the women of the house while labouring. She ‘mothered the mother’. The role is similar today – we attend birth, support women physically and emotionally and we support their partners.

Unfortunately the climate of birth in this country doesn’t always facilitate the needs of women and their babies to have such an experience. Women’s individual needs can’t always be met; time and work-load reduce midwives ability to give the necessary support a woman needs. This also impacts on the education women can receive. While I believe birthing is instinctive, navigating the hospital system isn’t. In fact most women and their partners are unaware they may need to do this. Having been uneducated when it came to my birth, I speak from experience. Knowledge is power and before I knew better I chose to be told what I needed to know instead of educating myself and listening to my body and intuition. The result of this was being in a model of care that didn’t suit my desired birth.

I have spent much time explaining my job to people and understandably so. My first encounter with the term Doula was in an ante-natal class. While discussing previous birth experiences, one woman said something that surprised me and had stuck with me – “I had an amazing birth, I had a Doula, it was so fantastic – I can’t wait to do it again”. I had to know – What is a Doula?

“ The journey to the Doula sister hood has been transforming. I wanted all women to have empowering, nurtured, healing, fulfilling births. I also wanted those precious babies to experience a calm, welcoming and peaceful birth. I started my journey feeling very passionate and focused on how I could help women achieve that. Through my course with the Australian Doula College, I learnt so much about myself, birth and being that servant. I learnt that much of the knowledge I wished to impart to women is instinctive, primal and already deep inside them. I have much respect for the power of a woman. In birth she shows her true strength and ability. It is intuitive, intelligent and wise beyond words. Birth is place that draws that raw, amazing and spectacular essence out. Women and their babies experience a potent cocktail of hormones that create love, strong bonding and attachment. The senses are heightened and they can become in sync with their baby and their body.

Page 6

Being a Doula is more than just attending birth. I have a deep respect for women, birth, the wisdom of babies and birthing cultures and traditions. Giving birth and being born is a time of indescribable vulnerability and strength. It calls us to surrender and trust. For me being a Doula is about believing every woman has that inside her and the ability to tap into it. I can give her information, advocate her wishes and help her create a space and hold it. I respect without judgement each woman’s individual needs and desires for her, her baby and her family. Standing beside her throughout birth and making her needs known.

The wellness Mindset Top tips to get your mind on your side

B

eing known as the “Mindset Guy” It’s at this time of the year that everyone begins to ask me the same questions “What they can I do to stick to my health goals?” “How can I stay motivated?” “Is there a way to get past my bad habits that consistently hold me back?”

The human brain is always linking things, people and situations to feelings and behaviours in order to process life easier. Sometimes it’s just so hard to stop eating that particular food or to avoid that drink! Not to worry we can change that! First choose a food you no longer want to eat as often (For example Chocolate, Ice Cream, Soft drinks etc). Then remember a food or smell that is absolutely disgusting and then vividly imagine it in your mind so you can actually feel the “yuk” feelings and then quickly think of that first food you no longer want to eat and continue to remember the disgusting feelings thus linking disgusting with that first food! Simply restart and repeat the process until you have had enough!

Did you know that when communicating to people the “tone” of your voice has more of an impact on them over the actual “words” you use? For example you can say the beautiful words “I love you” in a way that gets you a smile and a hug and also in a way that starts an argument. Just by shifting your “tone” of voice from caring to sarcastic makes a big difference. We can utilise this. It maybe 6am on a cold morning, it might be some self-talk trying to convince you that it’s OK to skip your morning walk or run during your health program. That pesky self-talk triggers off an unconscious habit and the quickest easiest way to break that pattern or behaviour is to consciously repeat inside your own mind the same

“words” or excuses BUT in Mickey Mouses squeaky, high pitched “tone” of voice.

Yes you will laugh and yes it will work J

Everyone is motivated by both pleasure and pain. I’ve found too often though that people motivated by just pain simply yo-yo in and out of their pain zones and never really accomplish a goal fully and have too much negativity linked to health. Pain is a good motivator to get started if you are in a rut but you cannot stop there. So think vividly and write down 2 different negatives that will happen to you if you don’t take action on your goals and don’t make the changes (it may help to see what life will be like 5, 10 or even 20 years in the future). Then vividly think about what 2 pleasures you’ll get out of sticking to your plan and succeeding with your goals. TIP: I’ll be healthier usually doesn’t cut it. Think more along the lines of “I’ll feel more attractive in my underwear with my partner”, “I’ll have the energy I need to keep up with my kids”, “Ill inspire my friends and family to also change their health.”

Inspiring Change Miessence Sponsored article

It is estimated that each year in our environment we come into contact with approximately 4000 different chemicals, with 126 of them being contained in the average person’s personal care products used each day and that doesn’t include the chemicals we ingest! The Miessence story began almost 20 years ago, when founder Narelle Chenery began to question exactly that the ingredients in her personal care products and after much searching to find a truly natural product decided to develop a range of her own. In 2003 with the help of Alf Orpin, a pioneer in the organics industry Miessence was born as the world’s first range of certified organic products to food standards which now includes nutritional products. Research today shows that eating a range of super foods which include concentrated forms of fruits, vegetables, nuts, oils and probiotics is increasingly important for our health and wellbeing, and when combined with good quality organic skincare help to provide visible results to create an overall look and feeling of wellness.

Winter 2012

Colourful Wellness Healing with Colour Colour is a universal language that has been used to communicate ideas, rich symbolisms and feelings since the earliest known civilisations, such as Egypt and Greece. For centuries it has been noted how colour impacts our moods and emotions while it also has a powerful way of revealing our true feelings and thus giving us insight about our true self. In order to make these insights we need to first note how certain colours make us feel. If we are strongly drawn to a colour then there is something in that colour that gives us comfort, and thus reflects an aspect of that colour that we need in our lives. However, the same can be said about being strongly repelled by a colour too. If we can’t stand a certain colour then we are shown that on an energetic level that colour is reflecting something about ourselves we don’t like. If we were to therefore understand the meaning of this colour, then we would also understand what aspect of ourselves we may be fighting against. To give yourself an idea about your journey, below is a list of colours and their meanings to give you a place to start in understanding why certain colours affect you in your life.

Red

we are drawn to when we need energy, inner strength, assertiveness, motivation, inspiration or passion in our lives. However if we are repelled by red then this may reflect that we have problems with hidden (or conscious) anger, aggression or frustrations in our lives.

Orange we are drawn to when we need to balance our emotions, heal addictions, balance our sexual energy, crave vitality, heal past emotional shock or trauma, or inspire ourselves with creativity or movement such as dance. If we are repelled by orange quite often it can indicate that we do not want to face healing our addictions or emotional issues.

Yellow

brings clarity to our intellectual mind And encourages obtaining knowledge, desire to study, inner strength, and confidence and brings clarity to our intuition. If we are repelled by yellow then this quite often reflects self-esteem issues.

Indigo harmonises our whole personality, guides our spiritual journey and opens us up to a higher awareness. However like blue, too much Indigo can make us feel overwhelmed, isolated and even depressed.

Violet we are drawn to when we wish to

deepen our faith, service to others and our connection to the divine. We may be repelled by violet if we are struggling with our spirituality. There are many more colours in the spectrum that have meanings in our lives. I hope this list has given you a start on perhaps seeing how colour can help bring more healing and balance into your life.

Green we are drawn to when we need harmony, balance, space and room to breathe. It is also directly related to the heart so if we find ourselves repelled by green then there maybe heart healing needed in our lives.

Blue we are drawn to when we need calm, peace, nurturing, comfort, relaxation and encouragement to speak our truth to others. However blue can also cause us to withdraw into ourselves too much and this is why we are often repelled by blue.

Winter Wellness Warmer. Ear Candling Ear Candling is the holistic way of treating ear aches and other common issues related to the ear. It can be used to alleviate symptoms ranging from simple ear aches, sinus infections, and sinus pressure, sinusitis, and overall just being a soothing relaxing therapy. Ear candle practitioners do not claim that they cure these conditions, only that it will help to bring balance and promote healing. It is best defined as the use of an ear candle which is beeswax coated cloth that is shaped into a tube about 23cm long x 1.5cm diameter. The candles used are infused with essential oils and are hand-made here in Adelaide. The practitioner places the tip of a hollow ear candle snugly into the ear. Then lights the other end, creating a flame and a vacuum. As the vacuum gets to the external ear canal, it has the potential to remove wax or debris that may be in the external ear canal, thus deflating the pressure in the sinus cavities, making the head feel lighter. This energy cleansing technique has been around for many thousands of years and has been found in nearly every culture since the beginning of civilization. The exact origin of candling is unknown, however, there is a great deal of evidence indicating its use in many different cultures around the world.

A: Absolutely not! It is a painless, and a totally relaxing, enjoyable experience. (Remember, it is important to consult a trained ear candling practitioner). A: initially, most people need just 2 or 3 sessions to provide a sense of well being. However, some people may need up to eight sessions over a six month period. Once you have obtained a sense of wellbeing, personal preference should determine how often you ear candle for maintenance: - probably every three to six months would be practical. A: ear candling can benefit almost everyone, from infants to adults. However there are different groups of people who may benefit more than others. They include: Musicians: especially singers & horn blowers, school aged children, people who wear hearing aids, anyone who works with loud noises, trades people, people who fly, pregnant women, office workers, divers / swimmers, people who sleep on their sides.

With its long tradition of use, ear candling continues to increase in popularity. More people are starting to see the benefits of candling & its simple potential to help people to help themselves in a natural and effective way.

.......................................................... Questions for our Naturopath

?

Dear Deb We are supposed to drink 2 L per day of water and I just can’t make myself do it. I drink plenty of cordial (very weak). Isn’t this good enough? Louise – Elizabeth Hi Louise I know it seems like a lot but really you don’t have to sit there drinking water all day. In fact its better if you

don’t! Too much water all at once can over burden your body and send you running to the toilet! If you have a mouthful of water, every 20 mins or so, from the time you get up, to the time you go to bed, you will get in a minimum of 2L per day. And here is something interesting, water is actually addictive. Once you get used to it, you crave it. Cordial is NOT water. If you really are over drinking water, add a squeeze of fresh lemon (not out of the squeezy bottle, a real lemon) this can also have cleansing properties.

Embracing True Healing Your purpose is the key “Ahhhhhhh..... THAT feels better!” Ever found yourself saying these words? Each such utterance is an episode of micro-healing. So what IS true healing? Healing comes from words meaning “to make whole, sound and well”. The same words give rise to holy and wholeness, siblings of healing. There’s a sense of restoration to completeness embedded in the word healing. To understand true healing, we need to know more about ourselves. We are made of energy, which has coalesced to allow physical matter to appear – rather like steam which cools to form water and with further cooling, forms ice, something solid. Regardless of our solid appearance, it’s vital to remember that we are actually energy, light. It’s our energy state which determines what our physical form will be. Whenever there is a change in our energy state, our physical form changes in subtle or larger ways. What changes our energy state most frequently and potently? It’s our consciousness – the way we think and the way we feel. These invisible aspects of us are the keys – they turn the locks inside which either unlock energy for creative/restorative use or lock it up in our inner prison and impose a sentence, a suppression order, on ourselves. Such suppression requires energy to maintain. This results in tiredness being the most common complaint which patients present to doctors. Well, then, what’s TRUE HEALING? Simply put, it’s a change in our consciousness, our thoughts and feelings, which allows release of energy for creative use. When sustained over time, the experience of wholeness begins to be known. Wholeness itself is only fully known as we remember that we are a part of a larger whole – the body of humankind. True fulfilment lies in discovering what our part is to contribute to that larger body – what’s our unique gift to bring. Here is our life purpose.

Page 16

Every healing practitioner, from doctors, naturopaths, counsellors, energy workers and beyond, has the potential to offer a healing experience. I liken the different modalities to the spokes of a wheel which all lead to the hub, which is the experience of True Healing. It matters not how you get there. Over the years, I’ve appreciated the help of dozens of different practitioners, each of whom has assisted me in taking my next step in discovering my life’s purpose. Living that has been the most fulfilling experience I’ve known. Here’s some tips for True Healing: * Think BIG! True Healing leads to discovering your life’s purpose – let this be your focus. Put out the prayer/intention to discover your unique gift to world – that sets the wheels in motion. * Get a check up from a health practitioner. I often find people are depleted in their bodies and therefore, energy. If possible, a vibrant physical body is a great platform. * Let go of wanting to get rid of things in yourself. What’s right with you is the starting point – focus on these. * Engage in a practice you’ll maintain over time – eg exercise; meditation; prayer etc. Discipline is a key to discovering wholeness * Take note of your thoughts and feelings.Journal about these; talk to trusted friends; join a discussion group. Don’t take yourself so seriously, but rather be curious about how your thoughts and feelings might change over time.

Delicious Winter Warmer

If using the oven to cook your stew, preheat it to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4 • Trim the ends off your celery and roughly chop the sticks • Peel and roughly chop the onions • Peel the carrots, slice lengthways and roughly chop • Put a casserole pan on a medium heat • Put all the vegetables and the bay leaves into the pan with 2 lugs of olive oil and fry for 10 minutes • Add your meat and flour • Pour in the booze and tinned tomatoes • Give it a good stir, then season with a teaspoon of sea salt (less if using table salt) and a few grinds of pepper • Bring to the boil, put the lid on and either simmer slowly on your hob or cook in an oven for 3 hours • Remove the lid for the final half hour of simmering or cooking • When done, your meat should be tender and delicious • Remember to remove the bay leaves before serving, and taste it to see if it needs a bit more salt and pepper • You can eat your stew as it is, or you can add some lovely dumplings to it.
