KEY ISSUES

Loneliness and growing fragmented family structure often threaten the mental wellbeing of our elderly. While human-nature connection and intergenerational interaction have an enormous impact on our psychology, traditional design practice underestimates the impotence of multi-functional space.

By 2030, all baby boomers will be older than 65, the older Americans population will make up 21% of the population, up from 15% today.

The Schlow Centre Region Library, formerly known as the State College Public Library and the Schlow Memorial Library, had more than 291,000 visitors and 592,000 books. The library’s location influences the site selection process as it serves as a hub for intergenerational indoor activity.

SITE SELECTION STRATEGIES

The suitability analysis uses the geospatial weighted average method. It has considered the locations of elderly housing, schools, the EPA walkability index developed by EPA9, and the depression and obesity levels developed by CDC10. The area with high walkability index and located within a 0.25-mile radius of the elderly housing, the school location is considered extremely suitable. Simultaneously, the area with a high estimated prevalence of depression and obesity among adults aged 18 years and older is also considered extremely suitable. This exercise identifies seven locations ideal for intergenerational outdoor spaces - four are in the State College area, one in Boalsburg, one in Pleasant Gap, and one in Bellefonte. Eventually, the Sidney Friedman Parklet and State College Municipal Building plaza in the downtown area and close to Addison Court Senior Housing were considered for the catalyst project location.

State College Municipal Building houses police, finance, public works departments, information services, borough administration, and council chambers.

The Montessori School - Our Children’s Center offers early childhood programs for children from 13 months through six years, with a total of 90 Students.

The Pennsylvania State University influences the site selection process. In addition to the key target users, the university students and senior professors also get a chance to use the space and involve in the intergenerational program.

QUARTER-MILE RADIUS FROM ADDISONCOURTSENIORHOUSING

Addison Court Senior Housing is an eight stories high building with 90 units. Its downtown location provides convenient access to shopping, dining, and transportation. However, the resident has minimal access to green space, unlike other senior housing at the periphery of the town. The project in the downtown area will address the critical need for greenery for the resident of senior housing.

BRADDOCK SUSTAIN (Yr2050)

The project's final phase is designed based on the principle of Water Sensitive Urban Design, considering climate change and associated extreme weather events. It will feed the necessary water requirement for farming activity and simultaneously strengthen the resilience against climate change.

BRADDOCK GROW (Yr2040)

The third phase of the project is designed to develop community garden space. While the farming activity will support the community kitchen, the waste from the food court will be converted to compost to support the farming need.

BRADDOCK EAT (Yr2030)

The second phase of the project focuses on strengthening community engagement and also provide a space to initiate their fight against food apartheid. The multipurpose space will allow for a community kitchen, flea market and farmer market, and so on.

BRADDOCK PLAY (Yr2025)

The project's first phase will incorporate different play activities - Tennis, Basketball, Stacking, and kid play-lot. The main intention in this phase is to design some space that can facilitate the community engagement process and strengthen them to move forward to the next stage of the development. The play activities will bind the community together and help reduce the racial difference in society.

SUMMARY

Raheja Universal is one of the leading real estate developers in Mumbai, and the project was one of the high-end luxurious projects in south Mumbai. Before I became department head, the consultant finished the conceptual designs, but the construction drawings were still waiting. I had been requested to expedite project implementation since the landscaping was one of the unique selling points, and this part was far behind the timeline.

To begin, I concentrated on design management in addition to conducting frequent site visits and meetings with the project management team. I reviewed the consultants' drawings and made the required revisions with the help of the in-house team. In addition, I assisted procurement management in appointing vendors and suppliers promptly. My frequent site visits facilitate fast approval of hard and soft landscaping materials and site mock-ups.

Consequently, the podium landscape of 1.5 acres with around 20 amenities was finished in 9 months; ultimately, the value engineering effort saved approximately S$200,000.

SUMMARY

I was assigned to develop the Schematic Design packages and prepare the presentation drawings and technical packages for the Rooftop Landscape. I also led and managed the landscape architecture drafting team and provided technical direction for using the BIM environment. I coordinated and aligned with the BIM model from Architecture and other disciplines Mechanical, Electrical, structural, Facade engineering team. The overarching concept of the roof garden is influenced by a minimalistic and contemporary design approach.

The outdoor F&B seating areas are designed with a timber-finished look to provide exclusivity. The rest of the flooring follows a beige-colored granite finish that will blend with the surrounding exterior.

SUMMARY

Sentosa Cove is one of the world’s most prestigious, high-end integrated oceanfront marina residential communities. This development primarily focused on a residential resort zone with supplementary mixed-use development like a hotel resort, yacht club, and marina. While the first residence of North Cove was completed in 2006, the South Cove was comparatively underdeveloped.

First, I was assigned to work on the design development process. The scope of the project was to develop a holistic Landscape masterplan (includes open space, Roadside planter, waterfront walkways) that seamlessly connects South Cove with Central Plaza. Later, in 2014 a consultant (CPG Consultants Pte. Ltd.) was appointed to felicitate the Authority approval process.

SUMMARY

The 890m-long cableway link was initiated to transport visitors within the island between three main attraction clusters at Merlion Plaza, Imbiah Lookout, and Siloso Point.

It was decided that the in-house team would design the Landscape Architecture for three stations and the green roof, and RSP Architects Planners & Engineers (Pte) Ltd, architecture consultant of the project, would provide the technical assistance.

While I worked only on the planting plan for the three stations with a landscape area of 1175 SqM, the most challenging yet exciting part was designing the 975 SqM green roof of the Merlion Plaza Station. The critical factor was to meet the loading criteria of the roofing material, as the green roof feature was not considered from the beginning of the project. The total thickness of the green roof material was 100mm, including 50mm of soil. I selected hardy and shallow-rooted Sedum Spp as the primary plant material.

Besides the designing, I also closely worked with the procurement team to write the installation and maintenance specifications and select the contractors.

32

SUMMARY

Addressing the safety requirement during maintenance was the biggest challenge in the project. As the system was next to the fast traffic, the Workplace Safety and Health (Work at Heights) Regulations did not allow maintenance operations from outside.

The new vertical green wall system has been designed with an internal ladder and maintenance walkway within, allowing workers to work from the inside, thereby improving safety and productivity at the same time. In addition, the top portion of the vertical green wall system has been covered to protect workers from being electrocuted by the high tension cables and moving Sentosa Express trains.

A wide variety of plants are also used, carefully chosen for their ability to thrive under the sun. In addition, with the variety of plants and their different textures and depth, the vertical green wall system has enhanced the sense of arrival into Sentosa The State of Fun by enhancing the ‘tropical feel’ of the island and visually softening the concrete pillars.

SUMMARY

The project aim was to connect the fragmented trail of the Sentosa island and connect the route with the mainland park connector. This in-house design and build project joined seven walking trails totaling 8km, starting from Southern Ridges on mainland Singapore passing through the Imbiah Nature Trail, and ending at Fort Siloso at Sentosa.

Besides the budget constraints, the main challenge of the project was Stakeholder management. Two private stakeholders (Mapletree Commercial Trust, Resorts World Sentosa) and one public stakeholder (National Parks Board).

As the official venue partner for the Health Promotion Board’s National Steps Challenge 2016, the project also provided a fun way for guests to clock 10,000 steps, with signage along the trail to guide guests on the number of steps they have taken and provide more information on the various sights.
