Welcome to the 2015-2016 edition of the North Carolina Pride Resource Guide. As you look through this guide during the year, remember our advertisers and sponsors. Every one of them has made a stand for equal rights for all in North Carolina. Spanning North Carolina, our 31st annual NC Pride Celebration is the oldest and largest Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender event in our state. This guide is published once a year and distributed throughout the state during the year. The ads are mirrored on our websites.

History of Pride On the sunny afternoon of April 12, 1981, a murder occurred at the Little River north of Durham. Two young men destroyed the idyllic and tranquil surroundings by attacking a group of people they thought were gay. While several in the group sustained injuries‌ the thugs proceeded down the creek and attacked another victim who happened to be handicapped without use of his legs. He was insulted, beaten and drowned. When the murderers were brought to trial, there was great fear that the court system would let them off or lightly punish due to the gay aspects of the case. A group of local gay men and lesbians banded together for the first public demonstration for gay civil rights in NC at the Durham Court House during the trial in 1982. Although several gay people who testified at the trial lost their jobs because of discrimination, the main perpetrator was found guilty of murder. In the years that followed, the activists were surprised at the number of people who stood up and were counted. They realized that our small closeted community had crossed over a threshold. In 1986, the second public demonstration for gay and lesbian rights was held on the campus of Duke University. The event that started as a gathering soon turned into a march and every year for the next 14 years, the NC Pride March would travel to a major city of our state to demonstrate and demand equal justice. Each year it got larger as more of our GLBT citizens gathered the courage to walk down unfriendly streets and each year those streets became less threatening. It must be said that in the heart of most North Carolinians is a deep and abiding sense of fair play and justice. As the march went forward, slowly the attitudes of the past began to change. In Durham where the first march had taken place, there were now many openly gay and gay-friendly businesses. However in 2000, our Pride March faced a crisis when the organizers fell into chaos six weeks before the June march. After all the years of struggle and after all the marches in Asheville, Charlotte, Carrboro, Durham, Raleigh, Winston Salem and Greensboro, it looked as though in the very year of the millennium there would be no march in NC. As the disappointment traveled through the local Durham community, a small but dedicated band of 12 people united to save the march. It was held in 90 degree June weather and a faithful crowd of 2000 marched. In the aftermath, that committee reformed and began to revamp the concepts of our march to fit the new century. It was decided that it would be moved to the Fall to take advantage of the weather and it was also decided that the model of moving the parade had become too difficult to manage. The new model would be based on the idea of many county fairs and a single state fair. Our statewide NC Pride parade and festival would stay in the capital and support other smaller Pride events around the state. In a way, it is interesting to note that after 14 years of marching, our march/parade has come home. The real feeling at the event is one of a homecoming, where friends from all across the state see each other once a year. Using this model, our event has become the largest LGBT event in NC and the surrounding five states.

A Year to Celebrate In a long-sought victory for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled by a 5-to-4 vote on Friday that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. “No longer may this liberty be denied,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in the historic decision. “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.” Marriage is a “keystone of our social order,” Justice Kennedy said, adding that the plaintiffs in the case were seeking “equal dignity in the eyes of the law.” The decision, which was the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, set off jubilation and tearful embraces across the country, the first same-sex marriages in several states, and resistance — or at least stalling — in others. It came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of the unions.

Defeat of Amendment One On April 28, 2014, the United Church of Christ, joined by a coalition of Baptists, Lutherans, and Unitarian Universalists, filed a lawsuit arguing that North Carolina’s statute that makes it a crime to preside at the solemnization of the marriage of a couple that lacks a valid state marriage license unconstitutionally restricts religious freedom. Additional denominations and clergy joined as plaintiffs, including the Alliance of Baptists, the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis in addition to Episcopal, Jewish and Baptist clergy. The plaintiffs asked for an immediate injunction against the state. District Court Judge Max O. Cogburn, Jr. denied a request by leaders of the state legislature to intervene and defend the state’s ban, ruling the state’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. He wrote: “The issue before this court is neither a political issue nor a moral issue. It is legal issue, and it is clear as a matter of what is now settled law in the Fourth Circuit that North Carolina laws prohibiting same-sex marriage, refusing to recognize same-sex marriages originating elsewhere, and/or threatening to penalize those who would solemnize such marriages, are unconstitutional.”

You hesitate because you have never been married. It frightens you. Believe me, it can work wonders... How the world can change It can change like that... Due to one little word: “Married” See a palace rise From a two room flat

Due to one little word: “Married” And the old despair That was often there Suddenly ceases to be For you wake one day, Look around and say: Somebody wonderful married me.

Photographing Same-Sex Weddings — Alicia Stemper, Wedding Photographer (919) 812-4934

As a photographer specializing in same-sex ceremonies, I encourage couples to consider several areas when choosing their wedding photographer. Some marriages are making legal that which has existed for years. Images from these ceremonies show not just the joy and the love, but the mature and stable nature of these long-term relationships and the “it’s about time” sentiment that comes after a long, difficult struggle for marriage equality. Other ceremonies are for couples on a more typical “first comes love, then comes marriage” timeline. Photographers need to bring a creative, flexible, and nonformulaic approach to our weddings. Each wedding element needs a fresh look to reflect the authenticity of the couple and allow for genuine moments that are comfortable and meaningful. The wise photographer has thought through the template of a “typical” wedding. He or she helps the brides or grooms anticipate, plan, and tailor their ceremony to their own needs and comfort. Practical differences emerge for the photographer at a same-sex wedding. The marital couple is more likely to be of similar body height and weight and they are less-likely to have the inherent pleasing contrast in their clothing. There is a reason the black tux and white dress became classic! Choose a photographer who demonstrates a plan for addressing these practical considerations. Some same-sex couples have little to no experience with public displays of affection, especially in front of family members. A sensitive photographer understands this dynamic and instructs the couple in the art of the four second kiss and encourages frequent practice. When that moment arrives at the wedding, joy will sneak right out of lips and into images. Despite our new legal ability to marry our partners, it is critical to keep in mind that not everyone supports this new landscape. Some loved ones may not attend our weddings, and this sad reality might alter family portraits. Our community deserves photographers who have sensitive ways to approach this without calling attention to it. Gay and lesbian couples are sometimes refused service by vendors. Choose a photographer who sincerely welcomes and plans for your business. Our community is tired of completing forms that don’t quite fit. If a photographer is uncomfortable or has unexamined heterosexist assumptions about your wedding, you have not found the right vendor. If you make initial inquiries about availability and price and find yourself filling out a form that wedges your relationship into the format of someone else’s life, take notice. Perhaps the most important question you can ask the photographer is how they think a samesex wedding differs from other weddings they have photographed. If they start by insisting that all weddings are the same, I would submit that they just don’t get it. You owe it to yourselves to find a photographer that that does.

The Balance Of Nature Once to every bird there comes along The one bird that sings her a sweeter song And the balance of nature goes on Forever and ever with true love Once to every deer there comes a deer And from that first moment it’s very clear that The balance of nature goes on Forever and ever with true love Day by day we search for love The way we all were born to do Not one by one but two by two So, as long as there’s a you and me Together that’s how it will always be And the balance of nature goes on On, and on with true love
