Congratulations Miami Heat 6 – 3 - 1! A big THANK YOU to Pat Riley. You may know, Pat, Eric Spoelstra, Heat management, former and current Heat players frequent our town center for shopping, dining and great times. And many Heat members are involved with local service organizations helping the youth in our community. Thanks for bringing it here to SoMi. This is the last installment of the new “SoMiMAG” (Volume V, No. 6). The year has gone by so quickly. The memory of the new magazine logo unveiling at a reception last August is still fresh in my mind. I hope you liked the change-ups we made last October/November and appreciate your feed back. Your input is always welcome and much appreciated. I invite you to weigh in about SoMiMAG. Go to page 12 for our Annual Readers Survey, or complete the survey on line . Those who complete the survey will be eligible to win an orchid arrangement by our own Garden Gate. And if you really like “SoMiMAG” let us know by flashing us an “I LIKE” on Facebook.

The conference brought together leadership from Chamber South, county and local governments and business councils from Kendall to Cutler Bay to discuss and plan strategies to further economic progress in the South Dade community. Attendees at the conference, which was sponsored by Baptist Health South Florida, heard from County Manager George Burgess as breakfast speaker, broke out into focus groups, got some good business coaching, and appreciated remarks from local economist Tony Villamill during the lunch. In a few short hours, much was heard, discussed and digested as the community plans to move forward – together.

As with anyone growing up in the 50’s, the Legend of Zorro scored big with inquisitive and adventurous minds. And so it was with a young Mike Elder whose infatuation with sword fighting took him from being a young Ohio state champion in high school to being a member of the University of Wisconsin Varsity Fencing Team in Sabre, taking first place (1966, 67) in the NCAA Big 10 Sabre Competitions.
A member of the United States Fencing Coaches Association with the certification Moniteur d’Escrime in Foil, Epee, and Sabre, Elder brings fifty years fencing experience, primarily in competitive sports and instructional activities to the Miami Fencing Club.

NEW BUSINESS OWNERS REFLECT ON SOMI The owners of our three featured businesses are upbeat, optimistic and genuinely connected to the SoMi community. Lourdes Martinez of Massage Envy, Minerva and Willy Quintana of Segafredo, and Kiki Garcia of the Dressing Room agree that our town is a wonderful place in which to operate a business. “I love the city, the people and the small town feel. I have made great business relationships and friendships in just two short years,” said Lourdes Martinez, who also owns the European Wax Center just over the border in Coral Gables. Willy Quintana praises SoMi as a “feel good place.” And Kiki Garcia joined the others in praising the camaraderie among fellow business owners, “We are concerned how each restaurant, shop or spa is doing. We realize it is important to support one another.” Each venture has been opened for a relatively brief amount of time from 18 months to just a couple of weeks, yet each has succeeded in establishing venues that customers clearly enjoy and need. The Dressing Room is a woman’s boutique featuring au courant clothing, shoes and accessories. Kiki’s keen eye for exuberant, colorful fashions was honed while working for designer Betsey Johnson in Merrick Park and at the flagship store in New York. After receiving a Certificate in Fashion from Parsons New School of Design, she returned to her hometown of South Miami. Here she realized her dream to open the kind of boutique that would offer high fashion at affordable prices in an intimate setting. Providing the kind of high-end service and personal assistance usually associated with higher-priced boutiques continues to contribute to The Dressing Room’s popularity. Recently, The Dressing Room was featured in a “Beat the Heat”
fashion show on the Today in Florida (Channel 6) morning news program. Kiki’s clothing selections are regularly worn on air by Mariana Rodriguez of Accesso Total, a Spanish language television show. The husband and wife team of Willy and Minerva Quintana were determined to have a business in SoMi. Their affection for our fair city remains strong even though a series of challenges pushed the completion of their restaurant some 18 months beyond the anticipated opening date. Minerva laughs when she says, “No matter where we might be in Miami, we always find ourselves coming to the South Miami Town Center to dine, relax or meet with friends.” As self-confessed coffee addicts, owning a franchise famous for its extremely high-quality coffee made Segafredo a natural choice to add to the Quintana family’s other business ventures. Segafredo recently opened for dinner and will be opening soon for lunch and breakfast. A carefully crafted array of bistro-style dishes have been designed especially for SoMi’s discerning, yet casual diners by Joaquin Ortiz, General Manager and partner. Made from all natural ingredients, Segafredo’s food is complemented by a very fine selection of wines and beers. And of course, there are tempting desserts to go with one of the house’s signature coffees. Lourdes Martinez’s career moved from realtor to franchise business-owner after the collapse of the housing market. Among her ventures is SoMi’s Massage Envy. Opened just about 18 months ago, it has become one of area’s most frequented spas. The spa’s licensed and highlyexperienced therapists give over 3,000 massages per month to loyal clientele that includes athletes from the University of Miami. Lourdes not only has an instinct for choosing successful businesses, she also understands why it is important to operate them for as many hours per day as possible. Open for business all week long and into the evening, Lourdes, expresses the same philosophy as this month’s other featured people, “Many of my clients are working, tending their families and adhering to very busy schedules. I want to be available to them after 5 PM and all week long. It just makes sense.” DONNA SHELLEY

Hosted at the South Miami Middle Community School, Mike has been the General Manager of the Miami Fencing Club since 1993. With some seventy-five members at that location, novices learn the French style sport fencing used in the Olympics, and progress over the course of their training. Fencers progress through the sport according to ability, training, and motivation. Normally, beginners will practice for about a year learning the techniques of the sport, both footwork and blade work. After about a year of training, most fencers can begin to compete on a local basis to earn experience and competency. Fencing demands focus, strategy, tactical execution, and incredible forethought, plus speed, power, and endurance. The sport of fencing is fast and athletic, a far cry from the choreographed bouts you see on film or on the stage. Instead of swinging from a chandelier or leaping from balconies, you will see two fencers performing an intense dance on a six-feetby-40-feet strip. The movement is so fast the touches are scored electrically - more like Star Wars than Errol Flynn. The foil, épée (pronounced “EPP-pay”), and sabre are the three weapons used in the sport of fencing. While it is not unusual for fencers to compete in all three events, they generally choose to develop their skills in one weapon. Foil and épée are point-thrusting weapons. Sabre is a point-thrusting as well as a cutting weapon. The target areas differ for the three weapons, though all three are scored electrically. For sport conditioning and training, maestro Elder notes: “The athlete should focus on aerobic as well as strength and flexibility conditioning. Fencing requires smooth muscle development as in swimming or dancing. Any routine that enhances smooth muscle development will be productive. Fencers should maintain a balanced diet favoring fruits, vegetables, and grains.” “Sportsmanship, chivalry and honor” are values which are imparted by Mike and his dedicated team of coaches, which include two former members of the Cuban National Team and Maximo Tack-Fang, former Mexican Olympic Team coach. As a spectator, you become accustomed to the speed of the game, the tactics and strategies, and you will gain a better understanding for the finesse and fascination of fencing.

Photo above left: Sean Vilar has been fencing with the Miami Fencing club since joining as a beginner at age 11 in 2003. “Sean began in foil but changed to sabre where he found his real talent, He has been very successful in his fencing career on the local, state, and national levels” according to Maestro Mike Elder. A recent graduate of Archbishop McCarthy High School, this fall he will be attending Holy Cross University on a full scholarship where he will be on the Varsity Fencing Team.

SUSTAINABLE SOMI
Footworks Hans Huseby, association board member humors the audience and introduces his love of cowboys and collection of a Hop-along Cassidy ceramics.
AN ENVIRO-SERIES FULL OF EARTH-FRIENDLY SUGGESTIONS Our Green Corridor Miamians enjoy an average of six hours of sunshine per day all year long. Since Flagler’s time, Floridians have treated sunshine as an important commodity capable of separating tourists, retirees and the beautiful people from their money. We know that along about February, our northern cousins will have hefted one too many shovels of snow, given in to our ad campaigns and purchased a ticket for Paradise.
Enacted in 16 states, the PACE program however received a major setback in early July. The Federal Housing Finance Administration (FHFA) is the regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans. Their new requirements emphasized that they will not purchase loans with PACE liens, because in the case of foreclosure, the PACE lien would have to be paid before any other. Also, FHFA’s concern is that if a homeowner with a PACE loan wants to sell their home to someone who is going to seek financing, they would be required to first pay off the PACE loan or convince the buyer to fully satisfy the loan as part of the sales agreement.
What we haven’t been so cagey about is fully utilizing the sun’s capacity to be more than just a lure for the frost-bitten and the overworked. But, thanks to the members of the “Green Corridor” we may be on the right track to harnessing some of the sun’s energy in an affordable way.
Access to financial assistance for solar panels is something that will make reducing the carbon footprint of our homes and businesses a reality. The opportunity to take advantage of all that free sunshine will undoubtedly require Congress to intercede with the FHFA—not to mention a lot of advocacy by citizens and their municipalities, too.
Led by Mayor Paul Vrooman of the Town of Cutler Bay, the communities of Palmetto Bay, Village of Pinecrest, Coral Gables and our own City of South Miami joined forces to make “going green” more affordable and attainable for Florida property owners.
In our next “Greening of SoMi” article, we will report on the efforts of the members of the Green Corridor to stop Florida Power and Light’s bid to run power lines through our communities. FPL proposes stretching lines over 17 miles on 100’ poles carrying 230 volts right down US1. Their goal is to connect the lines to two new nuclear reactors that are currently in the planning stages.
Green Corridors have been cropping up in a few towns across the nation, with Berkeley, California’s plan a stand-out among them. Berkeley, with fewer hours of sunshine than Miami, has joined forces with the other cities and institutions to form the East Bay Green Corridor. The Berkeley group has a number of initiatives which include incubating and maintaining green industries in their communities, promoting and developing a skilled workforce in green industries, and identifying funding sources in support of these efforts, among others. South Dade’s Green Corridor along with other municipalities promoted PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) to legislators in Tallahassee. This resulted in HB 7179, which was passed by the Florida Legislature on May 27, 2010. The PACE program would allow municipalities to levy non-ad valorem assessments to fund energy improvements such as solar panels, wind generators, insulation or shutters for private homeowners and commercial properties. A lien would be placed on the property and the loan would also carry a monthly fee based on the cost of the installation. The lien would be lifted when the loan was paid in full. Energy retro-fits would also make participants eligible to apply for certain federal tax incentives—a benefit that would remain with the property even after it was sold.
Steve Scoggs, Project Director for FPL is on record as saying, “I think the overwhelming body of literature supports that this can be done safely, with proper standards.” Mayor Stoddard is quoted as saying that the lines will cause a “cancer corridor” in the communities. Look for this and more in the next issue. DONNA SHELLEY

Attended by over forty members, the mayor spoke of the importance of a vibrant business community, the imperative for improved relations between residents and businesses, and the need to support small businesses through the recession. The mayor is a professor of biological sciences at Florida International University.

The genius behind this clever approach is that it is not a mandatory ad valorem property tax, it does not impact the financial credit status of the homeowner and it is voluntary. The intended benefit is to remove one of the major barriers to clean energy, the extremely high initial cost of energy retro-fits.
Elected leaders from Culter Bay, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, South Miami and Miami Dade County met with Florida CFO Alex Sink in Tallahassee to discuss the Green Corridor initiative and the FPL transmission lines.

If you’ve ever felt like you wanted to air your feelings – no matter how controversial – but were too shy to do it, worry not, upstart company EyeXU is here to help! EyeXU (short for Eye Expose U) is a local South Miami project that has its roots in the Brooklyn of founder Jose Roque’s childhood. Growing up in the hardscrabble Langston Hughes apartments in Brownsville, Jose was no stranger to the dangers of drugs and violence in this poor urban area. To feed his creativity and also as an escape from his immediate surroundings, Jose turned to art, first comic books, then graffiti. He also would sell t-shirts during the summer to supplement his household income and to have some spending cash. The seed of his current project started in those difficult childhood streets. Jose has since been a prolific graphic artist working for various agencies, magazines and other publications, and has garnered several awards for his creativity and design prowess. (For the past five years, Jose has been director of the SoMiMAG Art Dept.) However, as the economic downturn began to affect the livelihoods of so many families in South Florida, Jose found himself laid off as Senior Art Director at an ad agency, and facing the prospect of foreclosure. And that is when the resolve and entrepreneurial acumen of his youth came back to aid him. Jose and his wife Stephanie joined forces on a new venture with a very clear mission – to turn the t-shirt into a tool for social commentary as well as a fashion statement. EyeXU was born, and the tagline ‘Fashion You Dare to Wear’ epitomizes the rebellious and at the same time socially conscious nature of Jose’s work. Jose says “EyeXU is all about bringing social, mor-
al, and political issues to the forefront, while utilizing the t-shirt as a canvas of expression. We’re like the daily newspaper of t-shirts. Up on the latest events but with a fashionable twist.” Their newly launched website, www.eyexu.com is an entertaining catalog of choices for strong fashion and personal statements. And the couple also wrote and recorded a promotional dance track for the brand (http://www.jukeboxalive.com/j_roq). The t-shirts cover topics ranging from being groped at a club all the way to the Catholic Church child abuse scandal. Some great taglines include: ‘Children need dads, not donors – which one are you?’, ‘Takes more than a badge… to make a good cop’, and the very timely ‘BP – Busted Pipe’. Besides the taglines, the art itself is striking and complex. The designs are eye-catching because they are very clean and layered at the same time. Sometimes Jose’s graffiti roots poke through in splashes and stylized letters, sometimes the drawings look like comic book art, and at other times the art and lettering can be unassuming and direct. In starting this venture, the motivation was not only financial, but mission-driven. They clearly set out to be a force for change through artistic expression. Stephanie says, “EyeXU will be tapping into all sorts of topics. Some might find them offensive, while others won’t. Please don’t ever take it personally. We at EyeXU strongly believe that a voice silenced will never have an impact for change.” Fashion with a mission and a voice – it doesn’t get much better than that. Check out EyeXU’s numerous designs at www.eyexu.com and Dare To Wear the great art produced by this local artist. Christian Torok

Unorthodox Chills: Wine Dresses Down to Avoid the Heat I must warn you: if you are a purist when it comes to wine, you may want to turn the page. What follows are some cool wine mixes that will keep you from overheating as you enjoy the sun. The Mimosa, the Bellini and the Kir Royale are some of the most popular and fun summer wine drinks. The Mimosa is made by mixing sparkling wine (Champagne may be used, but Cava is an excellent alternative) with fresh squeezed orange juice. The Bellini, an Italian invention, is made by adding peach puree to a frosty glass of Prosecco, the very popular sparkling wine from northern Italy. The most refined of these drinks, the Kir Royale, is a glass of Champagne tinted pink by just a small amount of Crème de Cassis, a liquor made from black currants. This combination is beautiful to look at and even better to drink. A less traditional but no less fun way of enjoying sparkling wine in the heat of summer is affectionately called a ‘Lemon Champ’. This ‘punch’ is very popular in South America where it is often consumed at New Year’s celebrations – our winter being their summer – and is definitely one of the most refreshing mixes out there. In a bowl, place about a pint of lemon ice cream or sorbet. When it has softened, add a bottle of your favorite sparkling wine. The wine must be freezing cold. Mix together quickly and briskly and ladle the frothy mix into your favorite Champagne flutes. Not orthodox, but delicious nonetheless. Another unorthodox, and to some sacrilegious, way to

enjoy wine in the summer is to mix it with seltzer water, ice or both. This way of enjoying wine is common in countries where wine is seen as an everyday drink, where every meal is accompanied by a glass. Of course, if you are going to try this, don’t use an expensive or special bottle. This type of drink is where a cheap wine can really shine. It’s also inexpensive and a great alternative to beer. Fill a regular glass with ice and pour in your chilled red wine. An inexpensive Chilean or California merlot works best in my opinion. Fill the glass with wine about a third of the way and fill the rest with cold seltzer water. This drink is very refreshing and easy to drink, so be sure to pace yourself because the alcohol can add up pretty quickly! Sangria is another great way to enjoy red wine in a more refreshing guise. This is basically a fruit punch for adults. Again, start with a less expensive red, like an Aussie shiraz or a Spanish Rioja. Pour it into a pitcher and mix in some sugar until it dissolves. Add the juice of oranges and limes as well as some sliced peaches, oranges, lemons and limes or any other fruit that will stay firm. You can leave this mix marinating in the fridge and add soda water or a carbonated sweetened lemon or lime soda before serving. Some recipes call for adding a dash of cinnamon to the mix. If you have more time, you can allow the fruits to soak in brandy overnight then mix all of the ingredients for a deeper flavored Sangria. These are just some of the refreshing alternatives to plain white or sparkling wine. Enjoy your summer, let your hair down and stay cool. Cheers!

WHAT’S HOT IN
the Brazilian Wax Martini or the Basil Rum Punch, it won’t be hard for Friday Dee Jay Illmanik to keep your booty shakin’ to the wee hours.
Ahh, home from work! Time to change into a casual, but oh-so-sexy outfit and head to SoMi for yummy drinks, tasty bites, and hip music to unwind. For centuries, cuisine, wine and spirits coupled with soulful tunes have helped define culture, bring people together and provide an escape from everyday stresses. But with the hundreds of venues in Miami, do you want to spend the time researching which place to choose? If not, that’s what I’m here for! These thirteen hot spots, all within a few blocks of each other, ensure you’ll come across the perfect “go to” places in South Miami regardless of age, food or music preference.
SoMi Hot Spots: The Party’s Just Around the Corner DANIELE ROSENFELD
Bougainvillea’s is the one SoMi hot spot whose staff is down to earth and daily live music is so consuming you’ll forget the bar’s nut mix is the only food available. The Bougie’s property was a 1940’s home converted into everything from a body shop to a coffee house, but the one concept that finally stuck was this non-pretentious bar. The inside has wood paneling from ceiling to floor with a wrap-around bar offering a daily happy hour 4:00p-8:00p with beer, wine, and well drinks under $4.00. If the outdoors is more your scene, you can choose between the intimate bistro seating surrounded by a fuchsia Bougainvillea’s garden or head out back to chitchat with friends or join the occasional album-release bash. Despite closing rumors, Bougie’s is definitely OPEN. It has been bringing in people from all walks of life for ten years with nightly theme parties like Tuesday “Reggae Night” or “Cougar” Fridays. Every Monday night Budweiser hosts four 10-top tables of poker, awarding bar tabs to the first two game winners. Wednesday Ladies Night is jam-packed with 21-35 year olds rockin’ to The Rejects till 3:00a while the ladies drink free Bud, house vodka and rum. Thursdays through Sundays, Bougie’s offers a schedule of live rock and blues bands that no other SoMi bar can keep up with including Fire Brigade, She Says So, and Tilt.

But make sure not to party on an empty stomach! Hands down, across all age groups, RA Sushi is the ultimate South Miami hot spot! The fresh food quality, attentive service, and hottest music around gives this rock-n-roll sushi restaurant and bar an energy-pumping ambiance that will have you coming back for seconds. RA always offers hip, loud music inside, a low-key vibe outside, and a DJ every Saturday night. The lively atmosphere is perfect for celebrity spotting like Miami Heat’s coach, Erik Spoelstra, who recently enjoyed a late night dinner at RA with friends. Passionate manager, Jason Wald, recommends you start your RA experience with Japanese Nigori sake, a sweet unfiltered potion traditionally served in a small cedar box allowing the woody characteristics to infuse each sip. Not into sake? No worries. You can’t beat RA’s six-day happy hour 3:00p-7:00p with half-off sushi and appetizers and $2.00-$6.00 beer, wine, and martinis or Sunday’s
happy hour 8:00p-midnight. And don’t leave without trying RA’s most popular appetizer, the pineapple cheese stuffed wontons, or one of the amazingly fresh sushi rolls like the famous Viva Las Vegas roll filled with spicy tuna and crab, spinach tempura bits, drizzled with sweet eel sauce and garnished with a crispy lotus root chip.
Tucked away in the outskirts of SoMi are two bars with distinctive vibes, Titanic and Fox’s. Kevin Rusk, owner of Brickell’s famous Tobacco Road, introduced Titanic Brewing Company in 1999 as the area’s first microbrewery. Named after the doomed cruise ship, Titanic pays homage to Miami’s colossal cruise line industry. The fresh seafood dishes taste like the fish were reeled off the ship and thrown into grandma’s kitchen. The nautical décor and steel beer-brewing tanks are the perfect setting for dipping into the beer sampler with six award winning hand-crafted ales. Titanic also creates seasonal beers, features guest beers on tap that rotate every 2-4 weeks, and has a full liquor bar and ten wine choices. After feasting on the Southern
¡Que rico! All this excitement may just shimmy-shake you across the street to join the salsa “rueda” at Casa Larios, a family-owned restaurant. The live salsa on Saturdays 10:00pm-2:00am makes everyone drop their forks and dance to the Latin guitar and conga rhythms. SoMi’s Larios has been running since 2002 with 82 year old papi still in the kitchen cooking Cuban comfort food and making all the employees feel like family. If your feet are aching after all that dancing, kick off those heels and roll down the alley to SoMi’s Splitsville Luxury Lanes. After the kiddos are put to bed at 8:00p, the adults come out to play in the upbeat lounge till 5:00a. Bowling games and shoe rentals are just $2.00 each Tuesday-Thursday, and with all that extra cash you can sip plenty $5.00 drinks. Come in Tuesdays for the $5.00 one-topping pizzas, Thursdays for the $5.00 sushi rolls till midnight, or weeknights during happy hour 4:00p-7:00p for special priced beer, mojitos, and punch bowls. And if you’re a 21+ student, check out College Night reduced drink deals on Sundays. Not in the mood to wear bowling shoes? No problem. You can shoot pool, watch sports, or break it down on the dance floor while the DJ mixes house and hip-hop on Tuesdays and Saturdays. And now coming on five years, Town Kitchen & Bar, has been a centerpiece local gathering place. The simple, yet elegant bar has a daily happy hour 4:00p-7:00p offering half-off the bar and all wine bottles under $200. Plus, TOWN serves the ladies half-off drinks all night during Thursday Ladies Night. With jazzed-up bar food and fun specialty drinks like
style homecookin’ with a gourmet New Orleans twist, be sure to order the chocolate bread pudding made with Titanic’s very own oatmeal stout ale. This gastropub is known for the best live blues, jazz, rock, and funk groups on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and of course, the most fun karaoke in town with freespirited singers using quirky props on Sunday nights.

Come in Tuesdays for Open Mic Night to chew on six-ounce build-your-own burgers for $6.00 and watch the locals show off their acoustics. The increasing craft beer lover population has allowed this ship’s smooth sailing. A short distance away lays a cornerstone of Miami culture, Fox’s Sherron Inn. A maze of deep brownish-red leather booths and dim ruby-red lighting will make you feel like you’re walking into a mobster Hollywood movie. Matt Andrews, manager and 90.5FM DJ mentioned that actor Ray Liotta came in for dinner and said, “Nothing’s changed!” The daytime crowd consists of South Florida old-timers feasting on ribs, yellowtail snapper, and the famous filet mignon “Thumb Bits” while listening to Sinatra classics on the jukebox. But as soon as 10:30p rolls around, hipsters stream in through the front and back doors for stiff martinis and indie rock. This eccentric crowd attracts celebrities like Andy Rourke, bass player for the Smith’s, who was July’s surprise guest for the monthly Smith’s dedication party, held the first Tuesday of every month. where local artists duel on a white canvas. If you want a really late night drink, go to Fox’s store window holding Miami’s oldest liquor license. But hey, if you’re up that late, why not head over to SoMi’s afterparty destinations, The Irish Times and Sunset Tavern, where the in-the-biz crowd is fresh off work and knows how to have a good time. The Irish Times is SoMi’s only Irish bar and the last to close. With its late night menu, an always-available Irish breakfast, and the largest selection of Irish whiskey in South Florida, it’s no wonder this neighborhood pub has become a home-away-from-home for its regulars. After the lively sporting events are over, the weekend DJ keeps people dancing nonstop till 5:00a! However, if you’re in the mood for a casual late night spot, walk a block over to Sunset Tavern where you can jam to jukebox beats, grab the karaoke mic, snack on late night munchies, and drink draft microbrews like Magic Hat #9, the tastiest new pale ale to hit South Florida. Tavern’s laidback sports bar environment attracts the locals with its creative nights, especially the thriving Thursday “Girl Planet” ladies-for-ladies night with house music and $1 beers. There’s also weekend fun with a seafood happy hour, rock bands and hip-hop DJ’s till 5:00a. Tavern hosts events like the upcoming beer tasting on August 25th showcasing 15 beers plus food for $20.00 that will benefit the Stand Up to Cancer organization. SoMi continues to expand its playful mix and is proud to give life to the city’s latest hot spots. The highly anticipated Segafredo SoMi Café joined the SoMi family in mid-July and is already causing a commotion on the block! This sexy lounge will be hosting its red carpet, celebrity VIP grand opening in mid-August. Segafredo is already featuring a weekend DJ for Miami’s young professionals and expects live music, special events and tastings to be a typical occurrence on its SoMi corner. and plans to take part in the growing community by supporting a foundation monthly. Another one of SoMi’s newbies is the industrial style restaurant, 72nd Bar + Grill, opened just five months ago. Sit on the chic red sofa and order from the diverse menu for those craving everything from ceviches and veggie options to refined burgers and pizzas. Enjoy the nice selection of wines by-the-glass or skim through the wine bottle list including 15 options under $30. On Friday nights 11:30p-3:00a, the restaurant is transformed into The Club at 72 with a yuppie crowd dancing to a DJ party mix. You can enjoy the fresh fruit concoctions like the sweet strawberry or refreshing watermelon martini made by world-class mixologist, Arthur Infeld, formerly of the nearby hot spot, TOWN Kitchen & Bar. Still not ready to go home? Oui! Oui! Oui! Georges-Eric Farge, French founder of the renowned Le Bouchon and George’s in the Grove, is doing it again in SoMi with George’s On Sunset. This new hot spot serves classic French dishes with a fun flare that are beyond delicious! So indulge yourself with some of the best eats in SoMi before you burn those calories to the pumping disco-like French dance classics that keep the crowd on their feet way past midnight. This upscale restaurant is known to make an extravagant birthday scene with blazing sparklers, shiny discoballs, and French singing. Don’t be surprised if any night of the week you’re given a glass
of champagne on the house after a live animal show or when the owner comes out in his outlandish costumes. Sometimes, in the middle of a little madness, you need a quiet sanctuary like Cavas Wine Tasting Room Café, a sophisticated, yet approachable wine shop and bar with a “try before you buy” concept. This cozy café has automated tasting machines holding wines from all over the world with ratings and tasting points for each bottle. Any weeknight 5:00p-7:00p grab a Cavas card and you’ll be surprised at the savings; 50% off up to $50. Starting in August, Cavas plans to have a DJ and extend this deal on Wednesdays Ladies Night until 11:00p. Still not sure which grape varietal to try? Whether you’re a beginner or a guru-in-the-making, educated staff and the weekend sommelier are around to answer your wine questions and host the occasional gourmet five-course menu paired with delicious wines. Tapas plates and plenty of comfy seating inside and out make Cavas the perfect setting to sniff and sip succulent wines and enjoy relaxed conversation. Whether a hyped-up dance night or a calm evening with a well-balanced wine in hand, SoMi’s alluring nightlife is bound to keep you bar hopping. Always live, never a cover, and a hot spot on every corner proves SoMi is the spicy destination you will continue craving! Enjoy nighttime in SOMItown!
