We’ve got some new hot venues opening and about - to - open in town. Segafreddo SoMi Café is now serving up some great Italian fare, while George’s on Sunset is about to open, as well as Barrio Latino. These latter two new restaurants are on “Sunset East” in our town center. Upon opening, this will go a long way to re-energizing the retail area east of Red Road (technically in the Gables, but very much in the heart of South Miami).
Armando O., South Miami “I enjoyed reading your last issue about desserts. However, you missed out on my favorite which is the ‘Hall of Famer” at Marino’s. Light and refreshing, this is a perfect summertime dessert with an almond shaped basket filled with sherbet and fresh berries.”

a winning TEAM South Miami Police Explorer Unit 256 recently took home the honors of first place overall in the 2010 Explorer Post Competition in Miami-Dade County. The competition brings together Explorer Posts from agencies throughout the county for a three - day program, consisting of testing their skills in Crime Scene Investigation, Domestic Violence, Search and Arrest Procedures and other typical enforcement matters. “It’s the first time this Explorer Post has been awarded first place in the local competition and the post’s very first time going to the national competition to take place in Atlanta this July” said SMPD Det. Michael Weissberg, one of the group’s advisors. Certainly their training over the year has paid off for Explorer Post 256.

“Where everyone is family” The State of Our Local Economy As the country seems to be slowly recovering its financial footing, we hear from three locals who have a clear sense of the business pulse of the SoMi community. Amy Donner is the President of the Red Sunset Merchants Association and is also a marketing consultant and realtor. Alein Cadalso, General Manager of the Shops at Sunset Place, has a particularly clear view of the retail landscape in our area. And Mary Scott Russell, the president of Chamber South shares her broad perspective on the financial stability and outlook of our community. The question in many locals minds is, of course, ‘how’s the local economy doing?’, and the answers are positive, with some minor exceptions. Amy Donner sees the economy as definitely on the upswing overall, acknowledging that while some businesses are achieving record sales, a number of businesses that had been in the community for some time have now disappeared. This makes her outlook particularly positive, as she notes that the great mix of businesses and the changes that have resulted from the poor economy have actually strengthened and streamlined those left standing, while the availability of space at good prices has brought in great new players. Alein Cadalso’s outlook is ‘cautiously optimistic,’ mentioning that while he does see light at the end of the tunnel, the picture is also a bit mixed. He feels the increased traffic the shops have seen will translate into better sales, and while he feels optimistic about that, he also mentions that although many businesses are thriving others haven’t or won’t survive the downturn. Mary Scott Russell is also optimistic about the local economy and feels that businesses have outlasted the worse and
are beginning to thrive and come into their own now. She is also very excited about new businesses opening in the area and about the liveliness and appeal of the scene in SoMi. Marketing and re-branding seem to be in everyone’s mind as the future of the area becomes the topic of discussion. Amy is very excited about the Red Sunset Merchants’ Association’s plans to launch a major marketing campaign aimed at increasing business and targeted toward cementing tourist and business perception of the area as a destination that is both distinctive as well as inclusive of all the amenities of other successful neighboring cities. Another focus of the campaign will be to make the tools of the internet, such as online shopping and social media access available to local businesses. Alein also sees increased, more focused marketing particularly geared toward tourists, as an important focus for the community to build a solid future. Mary Scott looks ahead and feels that some of the new marketing initiatives being launched and the South Miami business community’s commitment to bolstering independent businesses will see the area through and propel it into great near- and long-term economic development. The outlook for the area is definitely optimistic, and the business community has adapted and come out of the other end of the tunnel leaner and savvier than ever before. As the community moves into the future, we can definitely look for SoMi to continue to grow as one of the great destinations in Miami while still retaining its down-home friendly feel. The Explorers are comprised of high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in law enforcement, fire service, military and other leadership professions. The Explorers operate like a small Police department. They have a ranking system and they follow a chain of command. The new recruit must be between the ages of 14 to 19 years old. The recruits commit to attending every meeting, training and event the post has while maintaining a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average. The Explorer Post is also all about service to the community. These youngsters assist at our art festivals, the Safe Streets Halloween, Parade of the Elves, The King Pins Challenge and other community events. Additionally the Post has assisted the South Miami Drug-Free Coalition in Project Sticker Shock – a program targeted at convenience stores, reminding consumers not to buy alcohol for under age individuals.

The Post is responsible for their own fundraising to pay charter dues, equipment and attending the various competitions. On a recent Saturday, we found the Post collecting funds at the intersection of US1 and Red Road. According to Det. Joe Mendez, another advisor, the group raised about $700 that afternoon. Det Mendez reports, “That may seem like a lot, but keep in mind that it cost the post approximately $300 to equip one Explorer and approximately $450 to equip one Honor Guard.” JOHN EDWARD SMITH

SUSTAINABLE SOMI AN ENVIRO-SERIES FULL OF EARTH-FRIENDLY SUGGESTIONS
15 Ways to Go Green FIU Emeritus Professor Jack Parker Shares Useful Green Tips On average, Parker says, each Floridian produces an annual 24 tons of CO2 (which is the leading cause of global warming), most of it through fossil fuel consumption at home and on the road. The 15 green tips that follow are some of the best energy efficiency measures that we can take to lower our emissions and our electric and gasoline bills.
Air conditioning
consumption can be reduced by up to 40 percent by doing all of the following: 1. Plant five drought-resistant native shade trees (such as oaks or gumbo limbos) on the east, south and west sides of the house so that mature canopies will be adjacent to the house. 2.Upgrade the insulation and, after duct testing, plug any leaks in A/C ducts.
A founding faculty member of the departments of Environmental Studies and Chemistry, Jack Parker, who retired last January after thirty-five years of service to FIU, wrote this article for the Golden Panthers Alumni Magazine.
9. For each domestic airplane trip, donate $25 to solarcookers.org for a carbon offset of your CO2 emissions. This organization provides solar cookers to women in the developing world thereby reducing soot/carbon emissions as well as poverty, lung disease and deforestation. The most important
green purchases you can make are:
10.A solar water heater, which can save about $300/year and reduce water heating by 70 percent or more (current tax credits provide an 18 percent tax-free return on your investment), 11. Compact fluorescent bulbs for all frequently used light fixtures, 12. A slightly smaller high-efficiency air conditioner (SEER of 16+), 13. A compact, safe, high-mileage car, particularly a hybrid,
3. Install ceiling fans in all frequently occupied rooms – particularly bedrooms – and raise A/C thermostats by 2 degrees for the same comfort level.
South Miami elected officials with State of Florida CFO Alex Sink. (L-R): Commissioner Walter Harris, Vice Mayor Valerie Newman, CFO Alex Sink, Mayor Philip K. Stoddard, Commissioner Brian D. Beasley.
14. Energy star appliances, particularly clothes washers and refrigerators.
4. Install a light, reflective roof or coat current roof with reflective coating.
15. Cloth shopping bags, particularly for groceries, to reduce pollution while educating others about the need to care for our planet.
5. When away for more than a few hours, set A/C thermostats to 83 degrees or turn off the units.
Finally, eating less meat--particularly beef—significantly reduces your greenhouse gas emissions and is healthier for you.
Automobiles produce about a pound of CO2 per mile driven, so: Published in SoMiMAG with permission of FIU. 6. Inflate tires to the maximum listed on the tire (usually 35psi). This can reduce gasoline use and carbon emissions by up to 5 percent. 7. Keep the trunk as empty as possible. 8. Combine shopping trips: a warmed-up car is much more efficient.

The South Miami Drug-Free Coalition recently had a change of leadership. Javier Hernandez-Lichtl, former CEO of South Miami Hospital, addresses the members of South Miami Drug-Free Coalition as he prepares to pass leadership of the group to Kathy Sparger, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at the hospital, both pictured here with Coalition Director Margaret Prinzavalli Sotham. Hernandez-Lichtl served as coalition chair for a year. Sparger, in addition to serving as the hospital’s top nursing administrator, oversees the Addiction Treatment Center. In her new role as coalition chair, she will help direct the planning and implementation of prevention programs in South Miami as well as help to create strategic partnership with other prevention providers in the county.
If you happened to walk by Gables Rugs sometime over the past seventeen years, you would have noticed a stuffed Angora goat in the window sitting on an oriental rug. Now, tending the goat is a real live Shetland herder named Zeus. So don’t be surprised if the goat doesn’t move, but you see Zeus herding around the window. A new addition for Rose Kondralian, the three-year old Zeus comes to work with her every day.

HATS OFF TO THE SUMMER! SUMMER HAS ARRIVED!!! Beach, boat days, Bimini trips and regattas are always a weekend event in our sunny city. It’s time to shed our clothes and spend the days in flip flops and bathing attire -- you never know when you might want to take a quick dip!!! For men, this season’s hot look is the new line of swimwear by VILEBREQUIN. With an array of new designs and prints, the classic French resort wear company has taken a spin to the Aloha State and now has adorned its classic Mediterranean-cut swim trunks with hibiscus flowers and tiki men, all done in traditional Maori design.

Its now time to have fun, tan, and look amazing in barely anything – it’s the gift of living in such a tropical city!!!
Another hot item to be caught sporting this summer is straw fedoras and Panama hats, popularly worn in Miami during the Art Deco period. Chic and stylish, as seen on the runways of Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and other popular sportswear designers, the use of a hat is key in any day or night summer outfit. These accessories go well with a nice pair of vintage Ray-Ban Wayfarers and cool elastic bead bracelets. Be it wood, stones, or metal beads, stack them up and make a statement. Ladies, I don’t need to tell you how to look sexy in a bathing suit because that’s what you do best! Being South Floridians, our women have it down to a science. Just as for men, the straw fedoras and Panama hats are all the rage. Bikinis, of all types are staple pieces. Whether classic bandeau tops, two pieces, onesies, or geometric cuts, these styles look great on sun-kissed bodies. A must-have for the summer is a big, sexy beach bag. Thankfully, Tory Birch, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Gucci have taken care of that with big plastic totes ready to fit all of your belongings into for that fun day out on the water.
Local artists interested in participating in the Season III of ArtNight South Miami (October 2010 – March, 2011) and those interested in volunteering to make Don’t forget, just because you are wearing a bikini doesn’t mean that’s the only thing you have to wear. Bangle bracelets and bead bracelets “look a stunner” with that cute two-piece. Cute Charm necklaces and initial plates also help accentuate your upper hemispheres. Its now time to have fun, tan, and look amazing in barely anything – it’s the gift of living in such a tropical city!!! Who would trade that for anything else??? Wishing you all a stylishly-fab summer! We will meet again in the fall, when I’ll bring you the freshest looks from London, Milan, and Paris.

S TAGGING OMI
now online at somimag.com
Often times a tag line is a crucial part of a branding campaign. SOMImag is promoting a campaign to give YOU the opportunity to showcase your creative skills and come up with a new tag line for SOMItown.
Over the course of the year, you’ve certainly seen “SOMI” popping up all around. It began with certain businesses over the past four years, a construction project, a new charter school and more. SOMI is catching on.
Difference... Where Excellence and Friendly Personal Service are Still Valued Qualities.”
With the launch of the re-branded magazine this past October 2009, we invited our readers to create a tagline for SOMItown. This is the abbreviated version of South Miami “Town Center,” which name was adopted (rather than “Downtown South Miami”) and originally proposed by the Mayor’s Marketing Task Force in 1996, to convey a more “hometown” image recognizing our unique boutiques and fine restaurants here in South Miami.
Several readers had responded and we have some good ideas afloat. Here’s a short list: “SOMI, the place to be...” “SOMI ...is So ME!” “By Day, By Night - It’s Just Right…” While we thought we would have this all wrapped up in the early part of the year, the tagline review committee of marketing professionals hasn’t passed final judgment, and suggested running this out there again.
Right now, we opted for the tagline “It’s Where You Belong.”
So, it’s back to you again… More recently, the City Manager’s Economic Development Committee (2004) put the tagline on South Miami Town Center - “Experience the

A spa can be an urban oasis, a haven in which to be pampered, and a place of rejuvenation. Whether you are contemplating a visit to a spa, regularly take advantage of their services, or would like to know what they are all about, we invite you to take a little trip with us to learn more about some of SoMi’s spas. SoMiMAG exhorts its male readers to stay with this article. If you don’t know already, the services that spas offer are not restricted to the female realm. Massage, skin care, counseling for weight loss and nutrition, and detoxification programs are just a few of the healthy lifestyle choices proffered to male and female clients. Pecan’s Day Spa is a haven away from the bustle and demands of life. This hidden and intimate sanctuary reflects owners Don Vorous’ and Pecan Chamathorn’s philosophy of catering to the client. Through attention to detail, highly experienced staff, and emphasis on quality, Pecan’s has built up a loyal clientele over their 11 years in South Miami, chiefly via client recommendation. The spa menu at Pecan’s includes massage therapy, facials, advanced skin care, teeth whitening and cellulite reduction. Cellulite, that nasty dimpling under the skin that never seems to go away, is treated with a method that is recognized worldwide and was the first FDA-approved technique for reducing the appearance of cellulite. LPG Endermologie is a process that works to reduce cellulite by increasing the blood flow to the skin through “roll stimulation,” softening the tissue, resulting in smoother and softer skin. If this sounds like a woman’s kind of place, it might surprise you to know that 50 percent of Pecan’s loyal customer base is male. They take advantage of Pecan’s numerous services, including massage. According to Vorous, “We have a dedicated couples massage suite and the best deep tissue massage in town.” At Bellezza Day Spa “making a difference in the client’s life” is the focus of their service. Spa manager Mahshid Loghmani said, “We want to be there for our clients when they need us.”

Batoul Sadeghi McDonnel is the woman behind the vision for Bellezza Spa. She believes that proper skin care is an important step in maintaining overall health. A Europeantrained esthetician with 20 years of experience, Ms. McDonnel has been providing topnotch spa services since she came to Miami in 1986. Bellezza Spa’s list of services is extensive and features packages that are specifically designed for young women, such as “Coming of Age” and other life phases: “Bride to Be” and “New Mom’s Escape.” The Hand and Foot Company’s line of products and therapies include a special pedicure for the wheels of hard-driving athletes complete with foot massage. The spa offers an array of personal services, an on-staff plastic surgeon, spa lunches, and a boutique featuring jewelry, clothing, and many top lines of European skin care and beauty products. Additionally, Bellezza Spa has monthly raffles to benefit local charities. “We want to show our appreciation for the community’s support of the spa; we want to give back to the community,” said Ms. Loghmani. Lyons Spa and Salon is owned and operated by Rocky Lyons who has built up a thriving business with a loyal customer base. “I have been in the personal services business for 28 years in South Florida,” said Rocky. Billed as a wellness retreat, the spacious spa is quiet and tranquil and separated from the equally spacious salon. The spa has a full menu of services such as massage, facials, hair removal, hand and foot care, make-up application, and even a special “Junior” manicure and pedicure for young people. Their med spa services include Botox and other rejuvenation treatments provided by an on-call surgeon. Among the spa’s packages is “Gentlemen’s Day,” which comes complete with gentleman’s facial, massage, and sports manicure, and special packages for the bride, groom and bridal party. Also, the salon offers a 20 percent discount to FIU and UM students for their first visit. “We have everything except exercise and food,” said Rocky. House of Chi Spa offers a menu of spa services but with a twist. According to owner and esthetician Marie Theresa Davis, her spa is “mobile.” Brides, home-bound clients, and those who may be shy about going to a spa are just a few of the clients who can benefit from Ms. Davis’ holistic and natural-ingredient-based spa products brought to a home or event venue. She focuses on making her clients more youthful looking through a variety of treatments, exercise, and detoxification of the body.
If you’ve decided you have outgrown the butterfly tattoo on your ankle, House of Chi can help with that. “EliminInk” is a process that draws the ink out of the skin through the use of magnesium oxides and other ingredients. These chemicals bind to the iron oxides in the tattoo inks and lift them to the surface through oxidation. The area is later treated with an inhibitor to reduce scarring. When asked about male clients, Davis said, “They need to be educated about what is available for them, such as semi-permanent coloring of the beard and eyebrows for a younger look.” Last year we wrote about four of South Miami’s spas. This year, we’ve asked them about their services for men and what’s new. Here is a re-introduction to these great spas. Vida Day Spa & Wellness Center is owned and managed by Liza Bolufe, who offers a full line of spa services, massage, acupuncture therapy, and wellness programs. Liza’s skincare treatments are among her signature services. Spa treatments for men include Balneotherapy, massage, facials, and pedicure and manicure reflexology. Balneotherapy uses exfoliation, hydration via a bath in essential oils, and the application of a hydrating cream to clean and smooth the skin. Ohana Spa is known for owner Dionne Corona’s “party ready” facials that will have you glowingly beautiful just before you make your grand entrance at the next important event. Dionne reports that 30 percent of her clientele are men. The services they most enjoy are facials, treatment for rosacea, pedicures, eyebrow “control,” and hair styling. Male clients are ushered right into the treatment rooms in order to make them feel more comfortable. Everyone can enjoy Ohana’s new line of body treatments and great discount packages. New this year is the ability for clients to make an appointment via text message.

Dr. Jhonny Salomon Plastic Surgery & Med Spa is based on the philosophies of holistic healing, surgical intervention and wellness. An eminent plastic surgeon, Dr. Salomon provides a “one-stop shop” to looking and feeling great, supplying patients with the proper services, treatments, and education to achieve long-term beauty, youth, and wellness. The spa was the first to offer Thermage almost 10 years ago and is currently the only office in South Florida to offer the new Thermage CPT, the latest technology for the reproduction of the body’s natural elasticity and collagen renewal. Also new to the practice is Dr. Suzel Vazquez to manage the Age Management department. All the programs offered by Dr. Vazquez are customized “prescriptions” unique to each patient based on their profiles. According to Dr. Salomon, Age Management is “what plastic surgery was 20 years ago” and includes bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, mesotherapy, weight loss and detoxification programs, and nutritional counseling.

Looking “Spavelous” In May, South Miami Hospital’s Center for Women & Infants held its third annual “You Look Spavelous” event to introduce women to their services while enjoying a day of pampering. Learning to be “your own best friend” was the theme of this year’s event, which featured television personality Judge Marilyn Milian. Over 1,200 attendees were treated to a day of wellness that included foot screenings (and learning about what constitutes the proper shoe fit), free osteoporosis screenings, chair massages, and the opportunity to have mini-consultations with physicians. Denise Woods, R.N., is the Vice President for the Center and is the person behind the concept of a special “one-stop shop” for the health and wellness needs of women of all ages.

Summer Wines
Summer’s hot, let’s drink some cold ones!
Let’s start with some whites. Ideal summer quenchers are wines with crisp acidity, lighter bodies and usually little or no oak. The butter-and-vanilla-laden chardonnays are usually also hefty in the alcohol arena and tend to seem all the more cloying and clunky in warm weather. Good choices for summer are wines from cooler climates. Spain’s northern regions offer great, refreshing whites like those made from the albariño grape in Galicia, Txacoli from the north atlantic region and Rueda from the region of CastillaLeón. Each of these is crisp and refreshing in its own way, with albariño often being crisp while retaining a nice full frame, Txacoli offering some smoky, mysterious allure and Rueda (often blended with sauvignon blanc) being often grassy with a very crisp finish. Right across the border, Vinho Verde, from Portugal, offers a zippy, light and refreshing white that often has a slight hint of sweetness and fizziness. France also offers some great, fresh whites, particularly from the Loire Valley, such as the crisp, light sauvignon blancs from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, and the even lighter whites from Muscadet de Sevre-et-Maine – all refreshing, crisp and honest drinks. Italy offers the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio (best when sourced from the northern regions of the country) and Gavi from Piedmont, which also offers great refreshment value, often with a touch of elegance. Germany’s rieslings are always great thirstquenchers with their great combination of tart flavors and sweet finishes. Bubblies are great for obvious reasons. When the purpose is to quench thirst simplicity often trumps opulence, and
so the simpler bubblies tend to be the ideal drinks for summer. Prosecco is sweeping the nation with its great mix of fruit flavors and outstanding crispness and looks to be the number one sparkler for some time to come. Consume it super cold. Another great one to try, also from Italy, is Moscato d’Asti, a sweet semi-sparkling wine that makes a great drink any time of day. Chill it in the fridge and finish it off in the freezer for fifteen minutes. You’ll want to drink it everyday! White Zinfandel is on the decline, and for good reason – try something different for pinks and you’ll be duly rewarded. The best rosés to chill with are dry ones, and the best ones come from Spain and France, although other countries are also producing some nice examples. From Spain, Rioja rosé is a great drink, and, while the classics come from the area of Navarra, most Spanish rosés make for clean, honest and refreshing allies against the heat. From France, the classic is Tavel and Rosé de Provence, although here, again, there are many great examples in almost every region. Argentina has put out some interesting (and beefy) malbec rosés and the US also has some interesting examples made on the dry side. Light reds, like Beaujolais and lighter pinot noir based reds from France can also be consumed slightly chilled and can be very cooling and soothing in the heat.

ART NIGHT SOUTH MIAMI
^
If you enjoy walking around town, seeing works by local artists, taking in some jazz then SoMi Artwalk® is for you. Plans are being made for our third season coming up, starting in October. ArtNight is a featured event of the Red Sunset Merchants Association.
In July, a Traveling Art Exhibit of Sobe Sober™ will be hosted at the Gallery. It is an awareness campaign focusing on the dangers of underage drinking and underage binge drinking in South Florida. The Sobe Sober™ campaign was created in 2005 by DFYIT (Drug Free Youth in Town, Inc.) to bring attention to the growing use of alcohol by minors. Each year, students in Miami-Dade and Broward County middle and senior high schools are asked to submit art work as part of a contest reflecting their vision of the dangers and consequences of underage drinking. This collection of creative art speaks to us of their view of the drinker’s world. Each year the contest winner has his / her work displayed on billboards or roadside banners throughout Miami-Dade and Broward. The Wirtz Gallery is located in the lobby of the First National Bank of South Miami.

GET FIT! Pumping iron. Weight lifting. Resistance training. Strength training. Bodybuilding. There are many terms to describe one of the most basic and fundamental forms of exercise that I will refer to as resistance or strength training. While the modern methods of resistance training have come a long way from the weightlifting days of the “strongmen,” resistance training is a vital component to any fitness program. When most people think of exercising, they think of something “cardiovascular” in nature. Perhaps they think of going for a jog or a bike ride, taking a walk or joining an aerobics class. on SUNSET EAST Two new restaurants are finishing up construction on the east side of Red Road in our town center, and opening new locations in the former Beverly Hills Café and Sushi Siam.
THE CLOSET SHOP Renowned restaurateur George-Eric Farge will open George’s on Sunset. Similar to his popular eatery in the Grove, George will be serving up French-American cuisine with a flare for the diverse. A native of Lyon, he earned his reputation in South Florida over fifteen years as the chef/owner of Le Bouchon du Grove. The Sunset Drive location will have a full bar, and will initially be open only for dinner and weekend brunch until construction on the adjoining restaurant is complete. George has had a fondness for the SoMi area – he gets a “good feeling” for the small town atmosphere where his business typically flourishes. Shown above is George with former UM and NFL quarterback Craig Erickson who is joining him as a partner in the venture. Photos on the left show construction in progress in early May, and George conferring with Erickson and interior designer, Gisela Martin.

“I love designer clothing, especially when someone else paid for it the first time.” That pretty much sums up the thinking of Maria Garcia who opened her consignment boutique a few months ago in a 600 sq.ft. space on 73 Street. A bargain hunter all her life, Maria echoes her many shoppers who are taking on the “thrill of the hunt” for designer labels at 50-60% of retail prices. In her boutique, shoppers will find Gucci, Chnel, Harmes, Louis Vitton and D&G labels among other highend names. At The Closet Shop you’ll find clothes, shoes and handbags that you will only find at Neimans, Nordstrom and Saks.

“South Miami Town Center” defines our singularly unique shopping and dining district on the east side of US#1, with our civic area, Metro Transit, Hospital Zone, Public Library and hotel on the west side of US 1. The entire area is comprised of the City of South Miami and our bordering City of Coral Gables and Miami-Dade County east of Red Road. This is the recommended designation by the Mayor’s Marketing Task Force (1996). Visitors to our area will find convenient on-street parking, Centralized Valet Parking on Sunset Drive and a centrally located Municipal Garage. Public transit is directly accessible at the South Miami Metrorail Station. The best way to enjoy our “hometown” district is to walk our tree-lined streets or park your bicycle at one of the many bike stands.
