FROM THE PUBLISHER John Edward Smith Before the hussle and bussle of the holiday season immerses us, I wanted to take some time and reflect on the changing dynamic in our South Miami Town Center – “SoMi Town.” Since establishing my image marketing consulting business in South Miami over twenty-five years ago (and where I also live), I’ve had the opportunity to work with area business and civic leaders in developing our business environment. Over these years, our community has continued to grow and be a very desirable place to live, work and play in the center of Miami-Dade County, an urban metropolis.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY //

Over the past three years, the municipal parking garage was completed and a beautification of Sunset Drive on the west side of US1. New retail and restaurants have opened throughout the area – a good sign of confidence in the potential of our area. While we can be proud of our accomplishments, there are other and equally important initiatives to be undertaken in promoting a cohesive unified image in our business and civic districts - our Town Center. There is a pressing need to work together in realizing this effort, and your input in creating a unified vision for the future is critical – we’ve got much to do together.

In this issue, we gave three successful SoMi business owners, Anthony Askowitz Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Advance Realty, Leticia Berrones Owner of Poblano Cocina Mexicana and Giancarlo Martell Owner/Designer of Giancarlo Jewelry Designs, three questions about their views on South Miami. Here’s what they had to say.

locals to see the listings and generates a lot of local business. He is also very excited about their involvement in the SoMi Art Walk. Leticia feels that her business ‘adds to the diversity of the area and offers people something different and unique.’ She mentions that her goal is to offer her patrons something ‘authentic, first and foremost.’ Giancarlo is very proud of his efforts ‘to support local artisans and to recycle and update older pieces of jewelry rather than just discarding them.’ He adds that he is very focused on offering quality at great value, and that he offers something for everyone.

Our first question was about the changes they’ve seen in SoMi since first opening their business here. Anthony, who moved his business to SoMi from the Gables just a year ago, was impressed by ‘the energy and the willingness of businesses in the surrounding area to contribute to each other’s success.’ Leticia, whose business has been in SoMi for four years loves the fact that ‘the area is turning into a little dining mecca with a lot more pedestrians and a great blend of people of all ages.’ Giancarlo whose business has been in the area for eight years feels that ‘we are encountering a new wave of consumers that are looking for something more unique, more local, that also offers great value.’

Lastly, we asked them what they would like our readers to know about them and their businesses. Anthony said ‘we are a welcoming, honest office with only the highest quality associates, and our focus is on quality rather than quantity.’ Leticia responded ‘we’re here to stay and we are very proud of the product we offer our great clientele.’ Giancarlo said his business is all about offering the ‘most creative and unique jewelry at affordable prices, always with a unique flair.’ All three expressed a very positive outlook for the area and great excitement at what’s to come in the next few years!

Next we wondered how they see their businesses contributing to the SoMi community. Anthony pointed out that ‘we are the only visible real estate office in all of SoMi’ and that creates a lot of accessibility for

CELEBRATING IN SOMI where there’s always something going on In an environment of rush, easy fixes, Blackberries, texting, ipods and more, sociological researchers point to the need for identity – to find a place of belonging. Rather than being lost in a mall of the sameness throughout, people are searching for a “hometown” – someplace unique, with an identity unto its own. South Miami Town Center is that place. We enjoy our trendy boutiques, fine restaurants and tree-lined streets. And to celebrate our home-

town a tradition of special events was created for our “main street.” The longest running event is the Chamber South Fine Art Show held the first weekend of November. Begun in 1971, the weekend event draws thousands to Sunset Drive. Conservative estimates of 30,000 attendees were reported for this year’s show. In 1983, the “Parade of the Elves” was established by the area merchant

association. Sunset Drive is typically filled with over 500 children dressed as Santa elves and other holiday fantasies. Over 80 parade entries include local high school marching bands, Girl Scout and Brownie Troops, church groups, decorated cars and floats. Always a popular event with some 5,000 people lining Sunset Drive, this annual tradition is “the best hometown, homegrown parade in Miami-Dade County.” Held on the first Sunday In December, 2009 marks the 27th annual parade.

Safe Streets Halloween was begun in the mid1980s in response to the need for a safe environment for area children to go trick or treating. Area merchants are always ready to greet the costumed little ones (and many adults, too) to provide treats.

And over the course of the past twenty-five years other events have been held to attract area residents and visitors alike: Summer Starts Here, Mother’s Day Concert, South Miami Jazz Festival, International Hispanic Concert, and Sundays on Sunset.

The February weekend Rotary Art Show first began in 1984 as a Craftsman Festival presented by the area merchant association and Rotary. In 2006, the event moved beyond crafts to provide an art show, with proceeds benefitting the charitable outreach of Rotary International.

A relatively new entry with a Sunset Drive event is the VW Show. Volksblast is a three day event culminating with a showcase of over 300 beetles on Sunset. Volksblast benefits Habitat for Humanity. A new monthly event which doesn’t require

closing off vehicular traffic is the SOMI Artwalk held on the second Friday of the month, from October through May. Visitors to our town center will appreciate local artists showcased at our area businesses, and get to see what makes SoMI so unique as retail stores, restaurants, salons showcase their specialties as well. The annual events produced over these many years would not be possible without the cooperation of our area businesses, presenting sponsors and the volunteers from the local chapters of international service organizations: the South Miami Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. FASHION HINTS BY GIANCARLO JR.

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

WITH 20TH CENTURY ELEGANCE REVIVAL

THE HOLIDAY SEASON should be a time to sparkle with joy, and that’s not hard to do with this season’s chilly weather wear. This year’s it’s the jewels lending their sparkle to all those end-of-the-year parties, outings, and gettogethers with friends and loved ones. Here’s how to look your best. Men – the proper fashion lexicon is rediscovered urban elegance. It’s a nostalgic return to the classic looks of Savile Row and Brioni, both once well-known for their tailored suits, skinny ties, bow-ties, scarves, hats, wing-tip lace-up shoes and other key pieces reflecting the sensibilities of legendary men’s fashion houses in England and Italy. A well-stylized jacket or blazer paired with a button-down and slacks goes well with a hat or scarf or both. Such style staples graced the likes of British actor David Niven, about whom it was said: “Aristocratic in his ways and British in his humor, the man of the ironic smile and a thin moustache wears a classy cap.” Emblems of British elegance, caps, hats and bowlers are the look for this season. Like the modern dandy he played in Bonjour Tristesse, Niven knew that the man who wears these fashion accoutrements well exuded innate elegance. Today’s stylish male wears updated an Oxford and moccasins with hat and scarf by day, and by night, easily dons black tie finished off with the essential cufflinks and a classy timepiece.

Guys, this season is our season to accessorize and in the right ways! The look of big bulky wrist watches takes a back seat as we drop our sleeves and don our cufflinks and shirt buttons.

Thinner more sophisticated watches with a hint of that classic touch make your new stylized look seem a retro inspiration. White or yellow gold pair well with the accessories of the season, but don’t be shy to throw in that lavish pink gold tone, or an oxidized sterling silver to ever-so-subtly rough up your clean, sophisticated look. Ladies, the look to have harkens back to the “Golden Age” of 20th century styles. This intense, enigmatic and sensual look is created with the restyling of a timeless classic – “The Little Black Dress.” Leading the pack, Givenchy’s offering gets paired with knee-high boots or ankle booties, keeping it monochromatic yet with a flair. The androgynous look of men’s trousers and jacket paired with a sexy pump or flats also takes center stage. Accessories command this season’s looks, with big, funky belts, leathers, velvets, fur hand bags, gloves, neckties, and a layering of darkened metals to add drama that makes your winter wardrobe pop. With a refined urban wear influx, hand bags and shoes are even more accommodating and luxurious this season. Elegant practicality meets lavish and exotic in this year’s muted tones and highgloss patent leather, degrade leathers such as ostrich, or those with cracked surfaces such as weathered crocodile and scaly python. The most exotic skins of this winter are the plush comforting velvets and furs that keep us warm and evoke the power of nature. These bring to mind the theatrical silence of the early 20th century divas and the aristocratic sumptuousness of 18th century costumes. Among the best pairings for velvet are accessories made in traditional gold tones and darkened metals. For today’s look, blackened gold and metals have moved from the corner of the jewelry industry to its center showcase. Black-

ened silver, stainless steel, unique blackened alloys, and even black gold and platinum are now couture staples in many jewelry showrooms. A blackened metal theme adds a dramatic backdrop for gemstones and mixes well with white, yellow and pink gold. Since black apparel is a stylish woman’s staple, slip this jewelry style readily into your everyday wardrobe and creates a divine mix when paired with pearls and other smooth stones. Fashion designers styled this fall’s 1940s inspired garb with a plethora of pearls, from dainty studs to ubiquitous multi-strand necklaces in ladylike, loose white layers or mixed in an array of luminous beads and chains, making your jewelry wardrobe incredibly versatile and wearable during the day or at night. Replacing the layered bohemian loose trend of the past season, this winter’s fashion trend revives the elegance of generations past in crisp, polished looks for winter. With such fashion inspiration, it’s hard to go wrong looking and dressing like proper ladies and gentlemen.

* future fashion insight THIS SPRING/SUMMER 2010 // The sound of jingling coins is no longer limited simply to your change wallet. Mountain biking in South Florida?

Yet, despite the lack of serious elevations, those venturing out on the trails will find subtle changes in vegetation. You can appreciate nature up front and personal – hardwood hammocks, which are home to oaks, palms, deer, black bear while only a few feet from wetlands. There are some great venues to get some rugged riding in: Oleta Park in North Miami; Quiet Waters in Palm Beach; Markham Park in Broward County, Amelia Earhart Park in the Hialeah area. Other off-

road riding proximate to us here in South Miami would be the Everglades National Park, both at the southern end of the park and off Route 41. (And thanks to some aggressive lobbying over the past two years, Virginia Key on Key Biscayne will be developing a mountain bike trail.) Check with the professional staff at your favorite bicycle store to gear up right for your off-road riding adventures in South Florida.

UN PROSECCHINO PER PIACERE! Some wines are used to being the center of attention, to receiving constant adulation and knowing nods from experts… and some are just as happy providing lots of pleasure, flying under the radar and not emptying anyone’s wallet in the process. Prosecco, the most famous sparkling wine export from Italy is such a wine. Great as an aperitif or a refreshing libation after a hot day, it costs a fraction of the price of other sparkling wines and is often replacing more traditional sparklers at celebrations and events. Prosecco, a virtual unknown not too long ago, has become a household name and is poised to give the higher-priced and more pedigreed sparklers a run for their money. Over the past few years more and better Proseccos have appeared at shops and restaurants, and many of those available this holiday season are truly surprising for their affordability and quality. Prosecco takes its name from the primary grape used to produce it, the prosecco grape, which grows in the Veneto region of Italy, and produces particularly great wines in the area between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Prosecco is not produced using the ‘traditional’ method employed for Champagne and other so-called serious sparkling wines, but rather using the tank or Charmat method, a quicker, less expensive technique that yields wines that are fruity, fresh and clean. While the traditional method requires that the second fermentation (the one that produces the bubbles) occur inside the bottle, in the Charmat method wine undergoes this fermentation in a closed tank, yielding a similar bubbly feel in a fraction of the time. While Champagne and wines like it are known for their nutty complexity, the way Prosecco is made emphasizes the wine’s fruity, refreshing qualities. For many, this less complicated style is appealing, making the wine a great aperitif and companion to light meals, always unobtrusive and enjoyable to a majority of drinkers. In Italy, Prosecco is often consumed for its own sake (no special occasion needed) and is popularly used as an aperitif or as a pick-me-up after a long day at work. Stopping by at a bar and asking for a ‘Prosecchino’ is a great way to unwind and leave the stresses of the workday behind. In the US, Prosecco has been steadily rising to prominence because of its drinkability and affordability. Although most Proseccos are technically dry, they usually contain a higher amount of residual sweetness than rival sparklers like Champagne or Cava. This tiny bit of extra sweetness makes the wines go down very smoothly, a profile that appeals to a large number of drinkers. (Not to spook the I-don’t-do-sweet-wine crowd, these wines are not sweet, they are just a little less dry.) If you prefer wines on the drier side, look for the word ‘Brut’ on the label. Also, Prosecco usually contains a refreshing amount of acidity, which makes it a good food wine that can accompany a meal from beginning to end. Affordability is another important factor, the top shelf Proseccos being around $25 dollars, with many delicious ones found in the $10 - $14 range. Prosecco will likely feature prominently at many holiday gatherings this season. It pairs very well with Thanksgiving and other holiday fare, and is a perfect sparkler to have as the world welcomes 2010 in just a few week’s time. Many fine retailers and restaurants in SoMi carry a variety of these wines, so pop those corks and enjoy the bubbly everyone will be talking about this holiday season!

SUSTAINABLE SOMI

BE PART OF THE CONVERSATION

AN ENVIRO-SERIES FULL OF EARTH-FRIENDLY SUGGESTIONS

Living along Route 1 can be both frustrating and rewarding. We endure the bustle of vehicular traffic that rushes through the center of our town, seeps onto our side streets and often transforms a five minute trip into a prolonged attack on our patience.

Don’t forget to enter your SoMi tag line. If you’re a business owner in SoMi, consider joining the Red Sunset Merchants Association and Chamber South. Go to www.rsmasm.com and www.chambersouth.com for membership information.

However, because we are located near this major transportation corridor, South Miamians enjoy a number of modalities unavailable to many suburbanites across America. Among the options of Park and Ride, Metrorail and Metrobus is the very “Green” M-Path. By using the M-Path, you can reduce your carbon footprint, get exercise, get where you are going and avoid the anxiety of looking for a parking space.

Become an Art Night Ambassador. For information, go to www.artnightsouthmiami.com

The M-Path is a paved multi-use trail that runs from downtown Miami to South Miami. Built in 1983 by Miami-Dade Transit as part of the original Metrorail construction, the path provides a course of pedestrian and bicycle travel under the elevated rails and is, for the most part, contiguous to US 1. Not without some shortfalls, issues such as tree routes and potholes were addressed in the Miami-Dade County Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) latest rounds of surface improvements. The next push will be to improve safety at intersections—a major safety issue for travelers on South Miami’s portion of the path, especially at Sunset Drive and Red Road.

Become our friend. facebook.com/somimag

The M-Path Master Plan also includes improvements to lighting, landscaping, encroachment, and signage (for safety and way-finding). David Henderson, Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the MPO said of the M-Path, “It is the spine that completes transportation choices along the US 1 corridor. It connects a large variety of destinations and provides a number of multimodal choices for commuters.”

PHOTOGRAPHED BY: Lars Sundström

More good news about the M-Path is the initiation of efforts to close what is referred to as the “Dadeland Gap.” Under this initiative heavily advocated by the Green Mobility Network (www.greenmobilitynetwork.org) and late Commissioner, Jay Beckman, the South Dade Trail and M-Path greenways will be connected, providing a path from Kendall Drive to the Dadeland South Metrorail station. Included is the extension of the path from Kendall to the Dadeland North station and from there to SW67th Avenue, currently the southernmost end of the M-Path. This will add two more Metro stops and connect areas of increased residential and commercial density to Miami’s downtown via the M-Path.

Settling on South Miami for their expanded business was an easy decision for the couple, as they often visited our area restaurants. Also, many of their existing customers are from the immediate area. “It’s the feel of the neighborhood which brought us here,” comments Minal.

Anil and Minal Chugani have expanded from their Morningside location of nine years to SoMi with a second store. Bhoom Shanti (“Bhoom” = Earth and “Shanti” = Peace) opened the first week of October. santona RISING Directly north from our town center on US1, folks are now flocking to Five Guys Burgers and Fries. This is generating new traffic into this area. And directly north from Five Guys is the new restaurant concept by the management team of TOWN Kitchen & Bar. Smoke T is planning an opening sometime in December.

NEWS

Directly on the east side of Red Road, Chef Emilio di Carlo has opened Emilio’s Casa Toscana. A well-established chef in Miami for over twenty years (Café Ragazzi known on Miami Beach) Chef Emilio and son Beto, provide excellent service and authentic Italian cuisine in an elegant setting. Emilio’s Casa Toscana is open seven days, serving lunch from Monday through Friday and dinner seven nights.

Steve Barad opened Artzee Boutique in early October. It’s where an art gallery meets a little boutique. With affordable framed art, the boutique caters to the new home buyer, interior designers and those looking for something for their home re-decorating. Artzee features a mixture of contemporary and traditional art by local, as well as, internationally known artists. Along with the original art presented at Artzee, customers will appreciate custom framing & mirror needs. As store manager Rene Pereda (pictured above) also notes, “we have a unique collection of three different lines of jewelry from California: Sacred Heart LA, Camenae, and Nancy Greene.” At Artzee you can also find different lines of Lampe Berger, pleasurable fragrances that have been cleansing the air in homes for over 100 years.

A resident of South Miami, Alexandra Borges Mastro, opened Vamp in early October. Located on 57 Court, she offers “trendy, well-made clothes at reasonable prices.” Her collections include local designers which differentiates her from other boutiques. Each month Alexandra plans to feature a designer of the month in clothes, art and jewelry. Fashion has been a passion of hers for years, now realized at Vamp. And what about the name? Alexandra notes, “it is woman, not of great beauty, but has the ability and sex appeal to drive a man to his ruin.” Guys beware! Vamp is open seven days a week. Make-up services are also available for her clients.

And opening on Red Road (former Marisol location) at press time is Miss Pepper. Three young ladies are realizing a dream with their new accessories boutique. Stayed tuned here to find out in the next issue of SoMiMAG who is the namesake – the real “Miss Pepper.”

With some twenty years in financial planning services, area resident Eduardo Coloma (Amoloc spelled backwards) recently set up his offices on 73rd Street. Amoloc Capital is designed for conservative investors seeking preservation of capital through the management of a diversified portfolio of CDs selected from top FDIC insured institutions throughout the country. As Ed notes, “with an emphasis on safety taking precedence over mere profit, we pursue our objective of providing clients with a portfolio stabilizer.”

Willy Quintana’s SoMi Café (Segafredo Zanetti Espresso) is now moving quickly to have an end of year opening. We’re all waiting Willy.

The “French Fries” are back! Part of the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places program, the fries were removed several years ago to make room for the proposed “Hometown Station” project. Learn more about that project, the newly landscaped area and future plans in our next edition.

COME TO KNOW SOUTH MIAMI TOWN CENTER “South Miami Town Center” defines our singularly unique shopping and dining district on the east side of US#1, with our civic area, Metro Transit, Hospital Zone, Public Library and hotel on the west side of US#1. The entire area is comprised of the City of South Miami and our bordering City of Coral Gables and MiamiDade County east of Red Road. This is the recommended designation by the Mayor’s Marketing Task Force (1996). Visitors to our area will find convenient on-street parking, Centralized Valet Parking on Sunset Drive and a centrally located Municipal Garage. Public transit is directly accessible at the South Miami Metrorail Station. The best way to enjoy our “hometown” district is to walk our tree-lined streets or park your bicycle at one of the many bike stands.
