mayaPRAXIs, located in Panduranga Nagar in Bengaluru is a design studio that looks at architecture and its landscape. The work runs along a path of diverse scales, types and settings – architecture, urban design, interior, furniture, exhibition and art. Design is creative and collaborative at mayapraXiS. the firm explores the spirit of the project – something that is often hidden behind the ‘functional’ requirements and project economics.

Director & Design Principal
Dimple is a strong and passionate designer who leads with experience and intuition. She is technically driven, creative in design and inspired to think critically and in detail. She has a Masters in History and Theory of architecture from University of Cincinnatti [USA] and a Bachelor of Architecture from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. In her 24 years of experience, she has worked in Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and USA on a wide variety of design projects and research.

Vijay likes to work on design creatively with structure, materials and space . He works with an intuitive, inspired spirit and likes to rationalise it to practical matters of the project. He has a Masters in History and Theory of architecture from University of Cincinnatti [USA] and a Bachelor of Architecture from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. The past 25 years have seen him work on design projects, academics, research and professional practice initiatives with different collaborations.

Project Info: A place to relax with nature where the architecture sits lightly on the hilltop. The design allows itself to be engulfed by the landscape, using steel structure, local stone and stabilized earth blocks from the site and technology that are non intrusive.

MEETING AGENDA : Purpose of the meeting was to discuss the design proposal.
1) DISCUSSION
1. SM confirmed about the site boundary after relinquishing 20m road and the drawing showing the 8 mtr setback which is minimum and is claimed and should not be used for the road design.
2. Moumita added that after the 8 mtr setback, there will be a compound wall after which the road should start.
3. mP questioned regarding the location of a temple from the survey drawing.
4. Praveen stated that if it is feasible enough and if possible then instead of taking the road through the mantri property, the road should be offset more towards railway property.
5. RR asked for a drawing from mantri which highlights the exact mantri site boundaries and if possible then the railway property line as well.
6. RR suggested that mantri should mark the compound wall first from which all the property lines we can get considering the compound wall as base property line.
7. RR asked for the clear information regarding the land ownership at the starting of the 20m wide road i.e., bellmouth. and continued the discussion saying the 20 mtrs road will be heavily loaded and will require 4 lanes.
8. Mantri asked for an option where the road goes in between the temples or else the temple needs to be shifted which CMD only will take the decision.
9. mP showed the option where the road goes through the temple and concluded that it is not feasible to take a road in between the temple as there will be only one lane then.
10. An overlapped drawing will be issued to mP by mantri (moumita) on Tuesday (17th April 2018) or Wednesday(18th April 2018).
11. Mantri suggested that we should propose a design first so that CMD can take a decision based on that.
12. Mantri confirmed regarding the parking that there will be around 1800 cars in total and also 4 mtrs from the site edges on sampige road is yet to be relinquished.

MEETING AGENDA : Purpose of the meeting was to clarify issues that came up during the design process.
1) DISCUSSION
1. Retaining wall built by the railways:
a) SM explained that discussions were underway with the railways and that an MOU would be signed soon.
b) Retaining wall will be demolished and rebuilt by MIPL in the correct location. c) If for some reason this land cannot be accessed, single lane roads will be built. d) Curb/divider to segregate traffic will be ideal.
2. Temple Area:
a) No portion of the road can extend into Mantri Property. b) If possible, one or two of the temple blocks will be shifted. Movement of the temple blocks is to be minimized.
3. Rajiv Gandhi Circle:
a) Bus bays will be raised such and demarcated as a separate area. b) Two design options are to be kept ready. the first option will be as designed. If approvals for this cannot be obtained, then the second option will be used. Second option will consist of minimal intervention.
c) The island around Rajiv Gandhi circle is to be kept as similar to the existing condition as possible in option 2.
d) Auto stand and bus bay positions are to be switched. Bus bays cannot cover over the nala.
4. General Notes:
a) A package of design drawings will be given to MIPL on 30th April, 2018. This will be used for internal discussions and will be subsequently submitted for approvals after the elections.

The design of the spaces allow them to flow into each other. Partition walls are minimized and furniture and structural members are used to delineate space. A similar palette of materials is used through out the structure creating a cohesive set of spaces.
sTRUcTURE
The inclusion of the double height spaces allow both the house and the studio to occupy one and a half floors each.

Located on a north facing site, the building includes both the mayaPraxis studio as well as the residence of the principal architects. A composition of angled walls, double height spaces and exposed materials, the home and studio remain distinct entities.
The building is supported on a network of RCC columns and steel stanchions. The RCC columns are largely hidden within the structure where as the stanchions are left exposed.
By inverting beams, the roof of the studio appears to be a flat slab which allows it to be decorated without the interruption of beams. These beams are further concealed on the terrace floor by the rooftop garden.
Slabs are projected from the beams to create a platform on which the brickwork can continue, thereby hiding the beams and allowing only the thin line of the slab to be exposed.
Also, be angling the walls, space is created for a window, the slab overhead acts as a sunshade. This, in addition to the angled wall, allows diffused light into the building while still allowing views outside.

MATERIALs AND coNsTRUcTIoN
The building was constructed using Cement Stabilised Earth Blocks, made from the earth found on the site.
The use of CSEB in a rat trap bond allows electrical conduits to be located in the voids between the blocks.
Composed of palette largely of exposed concrete, reclaimed wood, MDF and steel, the surfaces are left free of plaster and paint.
LIGhT AND VENTILATIoN
The western facade of the building is left free of openings. Large windows on the northern and eastern facade provide the bulk of the light in the studio space. Additionally, three large skylights punctuate the roof slab and allow light to penetrate through the various levels.
The double height space and windows help in effective cooling of the space. Further, the use of CSEB in a rat trap bond create a thermal mass which keeps the interiors cool.
