Esterházy Palace, Forchtenstein Castle St. Margarethen Quarry Esterházy Palace, once a residence of great magnates and now a striking landmark at the heart of Burgenland’s capital Eisenstadt, is one of Austria’s most beautiful Baroque palaces. Today it is a museum, a venue for cultural events, a research centre, and also houses part of the Esterházy dynasty’s unique private collection. Be inspired at the place where Lord Nelson listened to the music of Joseph Haydn and enjoy rooms that have stories to tell. esterhazy.at/schlossesterhazy Dating back to the 13th century, Forchtenstein Castle was acquired by the Esterházy family in 1622. They commissioned the structure we see today – a soaring edifice and bulwark that is Burgenland’s most imposing landmark. The Esterházys’ weapons and armour are stored here to this day. Even now, the castle is bathed in the magic of bygone days. Whether you wish to explore history or celebrate in style, Forchtenstein Castle is a truly unique location. esterhazy.at/burgforchtenstein The St. Margarethen Quarry is Europe’s largest natural stage. This natural open-air concert location covers an area of 7,000 m2, which gives it a wonderful acoustic and evokes feelings of awe. The natural and man-made architecture of the quarry enhances the emotional impact of the music on the nearly 5,000 opera fans in the audience. Germany | Munich:

The Alte Pinakothek European Painting from the 14th to the 18th Century The Alte Pinakothek is one of the world’s leading museums. In addition to early German painting, with important works by Altdorfer, Dürer and Grünewald, and valuable panels from the Early Dutch School, notably Van der Weyden’s Columba Altarpiece, there are many splendid examples of Italian painting, with Leonardo, Raphael, Titian and Tiepolo well represented. The heart of the collection in the Alte Pinakothek, however, is the magnificent Rubens collection grouped around the Flemish master’s monumental painting known as the ‘Large’ Last Judgment. Eleven works by Rubens’s contemporary Rembrandt make up the core of the collection of 17th-century Dutch paintings. Masterpieces by French (Poussin, Lorrain), Spanish (Velazquez, Murillo) and German (Elsheimer, Flegel) artists round off this almost complete overview of European painting from the 14th to the 18th century.

From Goya to Manet: The 19th Century in the Alte Pinakothek From summer 2019 visitors to the Alte Pinakothek visitors will have the unique opportunity of being able to see the collection display enriched by a further century in the history of art. The Neue Pinakothek is currently closed for renovation, and highlights from its collection will be taking up temporary residency alongside the Alte Pinakothek’s Old Masters. At the centre of the presentation from the Neue Pinakothek lies the paintings of these two artists, Goya and Manet. Branching off from this core, the display invites visitors to discover other facets of the 19th century, such as the introspection of Friedrich and Kersting, landscape and forces of nature in Constable and Turner, the dreamworld of the Symbolists in Khnopff and Redon, and the pulsating reality of colours in Gauguin and Van Gogh. www.pinakothek.de/altepinakothek

Germany | Munich:

The Bayerische Staatsoper Tradition, continuity and an impressive repertoire: These are the pillars on which the Bayerische Staatsoper, one of the world’s leading opera houses, stands. The Staatsoper looks proudly back over a cultural history covering more than 350 years. By courtesy of royal court tradition, the opera found a home in Munich in 1653, and its music-historical and socio-political development in the city has since portrayed itself in a globally unique way. With approximately 600,000 visitors to more than 450 events each year, the Bayerische Staatsoper makes an important contribution to Munich’s reputation as one of the great international cities of culture. During one season more than 40 operas spanning five centuries are performed, as are ballets, concerts and lieder recitals. The Bayerische Staatsoper’s program is therefore one of the most diverse of the international opera houses. With 2,101 seats, the Nationaltheater – main venue of the Bayerische Staatsoper – built in the neoclassical style in 1818, is Germany’s biggest opera house, and one of Europe’s most beautiful theaters. Germany | Bayreuth:

The Margravial Opera House The unique sights dating back to Princess Margravine Wilhelmine and the 18th Century make Bayreuth a splendid gem in Bavaria. When in Bayreuth, a must see is the UNESCO World Heritage Margravial Opera House, which is considered to be the most beautiful baroque opera house in Europe. The Court Garden is a beautifully spacious park in the city centre with fountains, artificial islands and baroque statues. The New Palace’s rooms design is unique. The trellis room, the cabinet of fragmented mirrors and the palm room are all masterpieces of rococo. Back in 1735 began the systematic development of the old hermitage. Wilhelmine had the old palace extended and added a music room and a Asian Cabinet, both of which are masterpieces of rococo. A central sun temple and a semi- circular orangery surrounding a large basin with statues and fountains were built. The Hermitage is today considered to be a historic palace and grounds of European significance. Other beautiful parks which fascinate the visitor are Fantaisie and Sanspareil, both fairytale like and magical. www.bayreuth-tourismus.de

Eltz Castle – A Fairy-Tale in Stone Hidden in a side valley of the Moselle and set in the midst of a natural paradise Eltz Castle is “the epitom of a castle” or, as the famous art historian Georg Dehio described it, „the castle par excellence“! With its eight towers, soaring up to a height of 35 metres, its oriels, roofs, timber frame structures and turrets the castle appeared to the British travel writer Katherine Macqouid like “a fairy-tale in stone, like a beautiful dream”. A group of entangled buildings, full of nooks and crannies, built within a period of 500 years. As one of only few castles in Europe Eltz Castle remained unscathed by wars and has been owned and cared for by the Eltz family from when it was built until today in the 34th generation. The guided tour of the interior of the castle with its manifold architecture and the precious authentic and complete furnishings form the centre of the Historic Eltz Castle Experience. Visitors can truly experience life in the Middle and Early Modern Ages here. The Armoury and Treasury of Eltz Castle is considered one of the most important collections of its kind in Europe. It includes precious gold and silver artefacts as well as porcelain, jewellery, glass, ivory, coins, curiosities and weapons from 850 years of family history.

Opening Times: Open daily from 1st April until 1st November, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm (last guided tour). Closed during winter.

The Gewandhausorchester The Gewandhausorchester can look back today on an over 275 year history starting when a group of Leipzig merchants founded a Concert Society, which, under the name “Grosses Concert” (“Grand Concert”) brought forth one of the most renowned musical ensembles worldwide. Besides the Gewandhaus the Gewandhausorchester performs in the Leipzig Opera and the St. Thomas’ Church, plus some 35 guest appearances per season all over the world. Several masterworks of world music literature were given their world premiers by the Gewandhausorchester: such as Ludwig van Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, Felix Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” S ymphony and Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7. Premiers of works commissioned by the Gewandhaus are presented regularly. Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein with Hilti Art Foundation – A journey through 130 years of art history Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is a museum of modern and contemporary art at the heart of Vaduz. The museum building, opened in 2000, a black cuboid with a subtly reflective façade, sends out a strong message to the outside world. The collection is showcased in temporary presentations accompanying the major changing exhibitions of international 20th- and 21st-century art. The new exhibition building of the Hilti Art Foundation, a high-calibre, internationally renowned private art collection, was added to the Kunstmuseum in May 2015.
