Understanding Spiritual Strongholds

Understanding Spiritual Strongholds

If you could interview the apostle Paul, you could ask him: “what is the best way to get rid of false ideas—strongholds—the lies we have believed about God, life, the future, the past, ourselves, others, etc.? He would answer: “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity [a tenacious commitment] to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:3-5)

In ancient times, a stronghold was a strongly fortified defensive building. Like a fortified city

that often included a large stone wall surrounding it. Walls were as high as fifty feet and ten feet thick. Their purpose was to keep an invading army out of the city. Paul used the analogy to teach a spiritual truth… revealing how Satan attacks you and how you can overcome Him. In other words, Paul used a positive “word picture”—a stronghold that protected a city—to illustrate the negative way in which Satan (as a strong man) seeks to “protect” his house from being plundered so that he may hold people in bondage. “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.” (Mt. 12:28-30)

Basically, Satan seeks to establish spiritual strongholds in your mind to keep God’s presence out of your life, to keep you in bondage to him. He has 6,000 years working with men, he’s not stupid (as some would have you believe). The Devil works his strategy to establish “stone walls of accusation” in your mind against God, to keep God’s liberating presence from invading your life and freeing our heart.
