A Message from Our President

I know I have said it before, but this fall is going to be busy. October is our birthday month and our program will be celebrating all things “Guild.” A new board will be voted on and sworn in as per the changes made to the by-laws. Afterward, I want to recognize and thank a number of Guild members for their time and dedication in making our programs and activities a success. Without their hard work, our events would not happen or be successful.

October also is membership renewal month. Your $20 membership pays for our meeting room and helps with our events and classes. Timely membership payment helps the board determine next year’s budget and plans. Please don’t make me hold the birthday cake for ransom and save it for consumption -- remember your membership fee. (A membership form is enclosed with this newsletter.)

Every year I wait with great anticipation for the Montpelier Fiber Fest and Dog Trials. The fest is big enough to make the beautiful three-hour drive worth it, but small enough not to be overwhelming. I always find something new or unique in fiber or yarn when I go. I guess you know where I’ll be Oct. 6.

I am not done with October yet. On Oct. 13 & 14, the Guild will have a table at the Waterways Heritage Festival at Lock Park in Chesapeake. The fest is a great time to sit, relax and knit in a beautiful setting. There will be other crafting guilds displaying their skills and wares for you to see and experience. Sign-up sheets will be at the Guild meeting, so sign up for a couple hours of “work.”

Finally, we finish the month with Halloween. What does that have to do with the Guild you ask? Nothing. It’s just how the month ends and I can binge on all the “leftover” Halloween candy.

Before I run out of room, let me remind everyone about our classes with Nancy Shroyer on Nov. 3. Space is limited and filling quickly, so get your reservation and payment turned into Lora. Don’t forget about the “Meet and Greet with Nancy” Friday night (Nov. 2) at Lora’s house. I am eager and can’t wait to learn some new shortcuts and tricks of the trade.

See you Oct. 1 for cake, but no ice cream.

SUPER RAFFLE DRAWING

By Denise Call October is the final month for our super raffle of an extra-, extra-large basket of yarn in memory of our friend and Guild member Joanne Fischer. Over the past three months, we have raised $129 in tickets sales, and we would really like to reach $200 at the October meeting. Remember, the contents of this basket retail for more than $500, and include quality yarns like Manos Silky Blend, Manos Wool Classica, Jojol and Melody, Araucania Ranco and many more in a variety of blues, greens, purples and a few pinks. So please bring your cash and don't worry about what you will do with it all. The winner will have lots of friends who would love to help out.

Proceeds will go toward education expenses for the March 2013 knitting retreat. Tickets are $2 each, or three for $5.

Charity Knitting Update

By Chris Goudeau Please remember those in need when you are looking for a project to start. Hats, blankets and scarves are all projects you can make with your leftover yarns. I will bring in charity yarn for you each month as long as my supplies last.

This year during our December holiday meeting we will be having a baby shower for Newborns in Need (www.newbornsinneed.com). Instead of our usual member gift exchange, we are asking that you knit/crochet a baby item. You also can donate diapers. The baby sweater that I showed during our meeting is a Ravelry pattern. It is called “One” and costs $1 to download. It is made in one piece from the top and is very easy. If you start now, we should have lots of items to display.

Here’s a recap of the local organizations asking for knitted/crocheted items:

Pet blankets – Virginia Beach animal shelters (must be at least 14” square)

Baby blankets – Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society

8” squares – Hugs from the Heart (hospice patients)

Get to Know a Knitter: Teresa Hammons

Linda Johnson interviewed fellow Guild member Teresa Hammons for the latest installment in this series:

Q. When did you know you were a knitter? What project/class/thoughts made you think "I'm a knitter?”

A. I never was exposed to knitting as a child. I was in Williamsburg for a conference in February 2005. I went shopping while there and saw what I thought was the most beautiful sweater I had ever seen displayed at a shop window. I went in, only to discover I was not in a boutique, but a yarn shop. I decided that moment I had to learn to knit!

Q. What do you enjoy knitting?

A. I love lace! It's one of the hardest things for me to knit, but I love it when I finally can see the pattern taking shape.

Q. Do you knit the same pattern more than once? If so, what's one of your favorites? If not, why.

A. I have not yet knit a pattern more than once. I still consider myself a "new" knitter. I have learned to knit by taking one class at a time. I don't really have a lot of time to knit, so while I love it, I consider myself slow, compared to others. I still have to many exciting and new things to try, and that hasn't left me time enough to repeat a pattern.

Q. You're fleeing a band of marauding zombies. You can only pack one medium-sized knitting bag.What's inside?

A. Sock yarn, size 3 double-pointed needles, a size 5 circular needle,n otions, a couple of basic patterns -- one for socks, one for a shawlette.

Q. When you're not knitting, what do you enjoy doing?

A. Vacationing! Hopefully a good cabernet and a good restaurant after a fun day of shopping!

Worth the Trip: N.C. Yarn Shop

By Chris Goudeau While we were on vacation a few weeks ago, we visited Swansboro, N.C. and discovered a wonderful yarn shop there, The Salty Sheep. Owner Peggy Baddour was very welcoming and knowledgeable, and she was very patient with us as we asked lots of questions about the samples in her shop. She has a wide variety of beautiful yarns and if you are in the area you should plan to make a visit. You can see her shop online at www.thesaltysheep.com.

TKGV MEETING MINUTES, 9/3/12

The president opened the September 2012 meeting at 7:17 p.m. by welcoming guests and extending birthday greetings to members celebrating birthdays in September.

The minutes of the August 2012 meeting were approved. The treasurer gave the treasurer’s report advising the Guild’s bank balance is $3,109.15.

The vice president advised the current board members are willing to serve another year in their current positions. If many members want to serve on the board or on a committee, please contact the president or vice president before the October 2012 meeting as the Guild will hold the election and installation of officers for the next year at the October 2012 meeting.

The vice president advised the November classes with Nancy Shroyer are filling up quickly. If you are interested in attending the classes, please submit your registration as soon as possible.

The charity knitting chair advised yarn was available for charity knitting projects. The president asked the charity knitting chair to see if the Guild can sponsor a fall 2012 charity knit in event.

The president advised she received very positive responses to the suggestion of holding a baby shower for Newborns in Need organization versus the Pollyanna gift exchange at the December 2012 meeting. Members can knit items for newborn infants or donate items infants need, such as diapers, bottles, etc. All items will be donated to NIN. The Guild will participate in the Chesapeake Water Heritage Festival Oct. 13-14, 2012. Sign-up sheets will be available at the October meeting.

The October program will be the election and installation of next year’s officers and a celebration of the Guild’s 22nd birthday.

Having declared a quorum present and having received a second on additional proposed change to the TKGV By-Laws, the Guild voted unanimously to accept all proposed changes to the TKGV By-Laws. A copy of the updated TKGV bylaws is attached.

The president led the program on Cat Bordhi’s Moebius cast-on method for cowls.

After the Guild enjoyed the enjoyed the Ways and Means Committee’s raffle comprised of donated items, the guild enjoyed the member show and share of members’ current knitting projects.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

BY-LAWS OF THE TIDEWATER KNITTING GUILD OF VIRGINIA ARTICLE I – NAME AND PURPOSE 1. This organization shall be known as the “Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia.”

2. The purpose of this local club/guild shall be to provide education and communication to advance the quality of workmanship and creativity in their knitting endeavors.

ARTICLE II – MEMBERSHIP 1. Any person who is interested in the purpose of this organization may become a member by application and payment of dues, regardless of race, creed, color or sex.

2. A club/guild may not form a cooperative in order to obtain a business license or tax number for the purpose of buying knitting supplies at a wholesale price.

ARTICLE III – OFFICERS 1. The local management of the affairs of this organization shall be vested in a Board of Directors composed of four (4) executive officers provided for herein, and such executive board shall set local policy in support of the mission of TKGA. 2. The Board shall meet at such time and places as the President of the local guild shall direct, or at the call of any two (2) other members of the board.

3. A majority of the local Board shall constitute a quorum for transaction of business at any meeting.

4. Vacancies on the local Board shall be filled by appointment of the President with approval of the remaining Directors of the Board.

ARTICLE IV – OFFICERS AND DUTIES 1. The officers of the local guild shall consist of a president, a vice president, a secretary and a treasurer. Terms of the office for each officer shall be for one (1) year.

2. The president shall preside at all meetings of the membership, all meetings of the Board of Directors, and shall be an ex officio member of any committee established by the local guild. The president, with the advice and consent of the Board of Directors, shall appoint all standing committees to be established by the local guild.

3. The vice president shall assist the president and serve in the absence of the president. The vice president shall serve as chairman of the local guild’s program committee, should such committee be established.

4. The secretary shall keep minutes of all proceedings of meetings of the membership and the Board of Directors.

The secretary shall take care of the correspondence at the direction of the president. The treasurer shall keep accurate and continually updated lists of members in good standing, together with their current addresses.

5. The treasurer shall receive and disburse all monies and present a statement of the current financial condition at all meetings of the Board of the local guild.

The chairman of each committee shall be appointed by the president, upon the advice and consent of the Board of Directors. Committee chairman vacancies shall be filled by appointment of the president upon the advice and consent of the Board of Directors.

2. The duties of the committee shall be as defined by the Board of Directors of the local guild.

3. The chairman of each committee will be invited to participate in the planning meetings for guild activities.

ARTICLE VI – DUES 1. The local guild shall be charged with the responsibility of establishing annual dues for its members.

ARTICLE VII – MEETINGS 1. Annual Meeting: There shall be at least one (1) annual meeting of the Board of Directors during the calendar year.

2. Special Meetings: Special meetings of the Board of Directors of the local guild may be called from time to time by any two (2) members of the Board of Directors.

3. Membership Meetings: The Board of Directors shall have the authority to set a membership meeting schedule on a monthly or more frequent basis at the discretion of the Board.

4. Quorum: Thirty percent (30%) of the local members of the guild currently in good standing shall constitute a quorum for a regular meeting of the members.

ARTICLE VIII– ELECTIONS 1. The local guild shall organize a nominating committee for the purpose of nominating officers of the local guild for the next annual term, and such nominating committee shall be prepared to present its proposed stale of officers no later than the monthly meeting of the members for the local guild one month before the annual meeting.

2. An annual election of officers shall occur no later than the annual meeting of the Board of Directors in conjunction with the monthly meeting of the members of the local guild.

3. The newly elected officers of the local guild shall take office after the first membership after the annual meeting.

ARTICLE IX 1. These by-laws may be amended, repealed or altered in part by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of those members present at a scheduled meeting that has a quorum.

The last few weeks have been pretty incredible for Baa Baa Sheep. I'd like to thank all my old and new friends who have made my opening such a success. You've given me lots of ideas for improvement and I appreciate it. New stock has arrived. I added lace and sock weights from Classic Elite Yarns, Cascade and Thank you Plymouth. The Board of Directors will be comprised of the president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. The working Board of Directors shall consist of the Board of Directors and all committee chairpersons.

The Board has the authority to spend up to $100.00 for activities. All other expenditures must be approved by two-thirds (2/3) vote of members present at a scheduled meeting that has a quorum.

There is a twenty-five cent ($.25) fine for any member not wearing their name tag.

Resident of Westminster-Canterbury shall not be charged dues. Feb. 1999.

The parliamentarian shall organize the nominating committee.
