A message from our president I can’t believe I am sitting down to write for the August newsletter. Where did the summer go? I have to say (from a knitting point of view) I look forward to the end of summer because I come out of my knitting slump. My slump and revival usually correspond to the health and decline of my vegetable garden, which is on the decline. # # I proposed at the last Guild meeting that we change up the knitting contest focus and rules to make it more fun and less intimidating. # # Based on the input I received, I am proposing the following: #

!1)Projects maybe knitted or crocheted.

2)They will be displayed and voted on at the October meeting by the members.

3) Any issues, ties, etc., will be resolved by the board.

4) Prizes will be given.

!# The categories will be: # !1) The Project I Am Most Proud Of.

2) OMG What Was I Thinking.

3) Best Use of Scrap Yarn.

4) Biggest Gauge Mistake.

5) The Oldest Unfinished Project I Have.

6) The Oldest Completed Project I Have.

!# We will vote on the proposal and any changes at the August meeting. If you have comments before then, email me at hendersonjb@cox.net.# # I was just about ready to give up on The Samaritan House as our focus charity group because I felt our projects were getting tossed into a closet along with other donated items. However, when I reread a thank you note we received for a recent donation, I noticed that it stated 60 percent of their clients were children.

All items will be collected at the December meeting and given to The Samaritan House at one time. We also have other charities we are knitting for that Chris Goudeau has continuously written about.# # Don’t forget your Knitting In Public BINGO card for the August meeting. One experience I had at Barnes & Noble told me it would not take long to check off my whole card! Charity Knitting:

Organizations need baby items, pet blankets, prayer shawls

# Thanks to all of you for your generosity. To date, we have created 241 knit or crochet items and donated them to 11 different organizations. Keep up the good work; the items are very much appreciated. # # We have several organizations that we can knit/crochet for this summer. # # Birthright of Norfolk provides help for pregnant women.

They will accept any baby items: blankets, sweaters, hats, booties, etc. # # Animal Shelter – Your leftovers will make wonderful pet blankets. The yarns don’t even have to match; the animals won’t care. Remember, the smallest blanket should measure 14” square.# # Chesapeake City Jail - The pastor at Guild member Vici Kahookele’s church, who also is the pastor at the Chesapeake City Jail, has asked for prayer shawls for the women who are incarcerated there. The shawls will be accepted at any time.# # Baby blankets – These are accepted anytime as well for several of our charities.# # Please bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. If you have items that you have given to an out-of-town charity, you should note that on the charity log. July 2014 TKGV meeting minutes #

The president opened the July 2014 meeting at 7:15 pm by welcoming two visitors and extending birthday wishes to Guild members celebrating July birthdays.# # The June 2014 meeting minutes were approved. # # The treasurer reported a balance of $4,319. There are no outstanding receipts to be paid.# Charity Knitting: Now that the weather is warmer, lighter-weight items are needed for the charities. Please remember to collect travel-sized toiletries also. Please bring these items to our monthly meetings. There will be more Navy/Marine yarn available in August. Some suggested items for charity knitting are: 14” blankets for the animal shelters, prayer shawls for women in the Chesapeake city jail, and baby blankets for Birthright. We are knitting items for Samaritan House for Christmas this year. Since 60 percent of the residents are children, please focus on knitting hats for kids, and scarves. These items will be collected and a single donation will be presented at Christmas. Please remember to fill in the charity gift log when you knit gifts for charity. # # Membership News: Our vice president was involved in a minor car crash last week. She is a bit bumped and bruised, but recovering well, and was back at The Yarn Club teaching a class several days later. We extend our wishes for a speedy recovery. # # Local Yarn Shop news:# # Baa Baa Sheep is adding Madelinetosh, Crabapple and Happy Fuzzy Yarn to their inventory. The shop is hosting snacks and drinks next week to celebrate the introduction of these yarns. Check the shop’s website and Ravelry page for more details about new yarns, activities and classes.# # Yarn Club: The beachfront yarn bomb was very successful. Please check the shop’s website and Ravelry page for more details about activities and classes.# # New Business: The president is hosting a retreat planning meeting at her house on Friday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m. She will be sending an email to all members, and anyone interested in attending this meeting and/or joining the planning committee should respond. # # This is the last night to order tickets for Stitch and Pitch Night, which is Saturday, July 12, at 7 p.m. Jackie Scott is the coordinator. Tickets can be picked up at the will call window. Remember to bring your knitting! # # Changes to this year’s knitting contest were discussed. The suggested categories will be published in an upcoming newsletter. A suggestion was made to contact the TCC web design program to see if any of students could assist with this project. Katie is going to research different options and possible costs for the website.# Thank-you to Cheryl for presenting the program about brioche knitting.# Guild members participated in the monthly Ways and Means raffle.# Guild members enjoyed show and tell, and then proceeded to participate in the semi-annual yarn sale.# There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:10pm.# # Respectfully submitted, Debbie Goodman, TKGV secretary#

Malabrigo Madness Month

August is one of the most exciting months of the year in a yarn shop. It’s when all the new fall and winter yarns arrive. Most of them were ordered in April and May, so by August I’ve forgotten exactly what colors I ordered from whom. So when a box arrives it’s always a great surprise.

One of my most eagerly anticipated arrivals is Malabrigo. Last year, I ordered yarn from them four times, so I decided this year to make a preemptive strike and I ordered four times as much, all to arrive in August. In addition to the Rasta, Twist, Mecha, Silky Merino, Rios, Sock and Arroyo that I stocked last year, I’m adding two new yarns.

Finito is a plied fingering pure superfine merino wool with approximately 200 yards in a 50g skein. The recommended needle is a #2-4. Nube is a hand-dyed, pure merino wool roving to use for spinning or felting. Nube means cloud in Spanish, which aptly describes the roving.

Try this nifty iPad app

Beautiful brioche Guild member Cheryl Moore showed off several samples of her beautiful brioche knitting, including this shawl that elicited lots of “oohs” and “ahs” during the July Guild meeting.

While I was speaking with Lora Marin during my sock class, she showed me a knitting app on her iPad that I thought was really neat. Plus, it’s free! # # It’s called JKnitHDLite.

Once you download it on your iPad you can import your PDF patterns that are saved on Ravelry. The app has a yellow bar that you can move to highlight each line you are working. # You can also import patterns from knitpoint.com once you have established an account with them. They have patterns that you can purchase and some that are free. # If you have discovered any other nifty knitting apps, please share. #
