A message from our president The votes are in and the group overwhelmingly voted to have a modified knitting contest at the October meeting. We will have an area/table set up with a monitor for each category and you will turn in your item and receive a number for your entry. To keep the process manageable, you may enter only one item per category. For me, selecting one item for the “What was I thinking” category is going to be tough. All items must be turned in NO LATER THAN 7:15 p.m., the earlier the better. The group will start judging shortly after that time. The monitors will tally the votes while the rest of the meeting is conducted. At the end of the meeting, we will announce the winners and award prizes. " " Despite my messed-up survey sheet regarding class selections for the retreat, the tally was clear on what the group wanted for classes. The classes selected are Shadow Knitting, Brioche Knitting, Embellishing with Needle Felting, and Pick up and Knit Cap Sleeves. The workshops selected are Thrummed Knitting, Fixing Mistakes, Duplicate Stitch and Felted Soap. Stay tuned for more information about the retreat March 5-8, 2015, at the Hampton Inn in Corolla, N.C." " Mark your calendars for the Waterways Heritage Fest in Chesapeake on Oct. 11-12. The Guild will have a display table alongside several other craft guilds from the area. The fest has many activities for families, good food, vendors and the opportunity to connect with other guilds. A sign-up sheet will be available at the September meeting." " Remember to bring your Knitting BINGO card to the September meeting. If you lost yours or did not get one, go to Pinterest and type in Knitting BINGO and copy one." " See you at the meeting on Sept. 1. Yes, I know it is Labor Day, but it is the first Monday! Join us and labor away at your knitting.

Now, I need to get back to my knitting, which after taking an inventory of projects needing to be done puts me about a year behind schedule. It’s getting better."

" Our numbers are up! Thanks to all of you for your generosity.

We now have created and donated 281 knit or crochet items to 12 different organizations. Keep up the good work; the items are very much appreciated. " " We have several organizations that we can knit/crochet for this summer:"

!•Birthright of Norfolk provides help for pregnant women.

They will accept any baby items: blankets, sweaters, hats, booties, etc. "

!•Animal Shelter – Your leftovers will make wonderful pet blankets. The yarns don’t even have to match; the animals won’t care.

Remember, the smallest blanket should measure 14” square."

!•Chesapeake City Jail – Guild Member Vici Kahookele’s pastor at her church, who is also the pastor at the Chesapeake City Jail, has asked for prayer shawls for the women who are incarcerated there. They will be accepted anytime during the year."

!•Baby blankets – These are accepted anytime as well for several of our charities." !" Plus, do you have red yarn in your stash that you are trying to get rid of ? Here’s a way. The Red Scarf Project gives scarves to foster care college age students. Scarves are accepted between Sept. 1 and Dec. 15 annually. Please send your scarves only during this time period as space is limited.

They send three packages during the year, one of which is sent on Valentine’s Day and includes a red scarf. " " Scarves should be approximately 60” long and 5” to 8” wide, long enough to be wrapped around the neck, with tails long enough to be tied in the front. Color: Red! However, this could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or multicolor hues including red. " " Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. For a personal touch, attach a tag saying “Handmade for You” with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. Donors have also included washing instructions, messages of encouragement, gift cards and more. " " Mail to: ! ! August 2014 TKGV meeting minutes " The president opened the August 2014 meeting at 7:15 p.m. by welcoming one visitor and extending birthday wishes to Guild members celebrating August birthdays." " The July 2014 meeting minutes were approved. " " The treasurer reported a balance of $4,359.There are no outstanding receipts to be paid." " Charity Knitting: Now that the weather is warmer, lighter-weight items are needed for the charities. Please remember to collect travel-sized toiletries also. Please bring these items to our monthly meetings. There is now more Navy / Marine yarn available. Some suggested items for charity knitting are: 14” blankets for the animal shelter, prayer shawls for women in the city jail and baby blankets for Birthright. We are knitting items for Samaritan House for Christmas this year. Since 60 percent of the residents are children, please focus on knitting hats for kids, and scarves. These items will be collected and a single donation will be presented at Christmas. Please remember to fill in the charity gift log when you knit gifts for charity. New Business: The slate for the new board was announced. Those presently running are Cheryl Moore, president; Marilyn Estrada, vice president; Debbie Goodman, secretary; and Beverly Boler, treasurer. Anyone interested in running for any office should contact Debbie Henderson. The slate will be formally presented at the September meeting. " " The president discussed the TKGV meeting survey which members were asked to complete. Based on the answers, this year’s knitting contest rules will change, along the lines of the rules presented in July’s newsletter. " The survey also included suggestions for KBTS Retreat classes. The room rates will be slightly increased this year due to the hotel renovations." " Marilyn Estrada presented information about a fiber tour to Peru in August 2015 through Adios Travel. Count plenty of stitches with this iPhone app

" I have been using a free iPhone app called CountMeme. It is a stitch counter, but what makes it really useful is that you can create an unlimited number of counters and name them. " " For example, I have a sweater where I have to increase the front four times. I have to do this every six rounds. I have a counter named "Sweater Increases" and one named "Sweater Increase Rounds.” The counter also has a Start/End feature where you end the total for each counter. An announcement is made when you have completed the count. The counters can be renamed, reset and deleted, which also is very helpful." " I keep several projects on the CountMeme, and my iPhone is always with me. I don't have to carry any other counters. The best part is that the app is free!

News from Baa Baa Sheep With The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicting a colder winter than normal, there is no better time than now to think about knitting winter accessories. The Never Not Knitting Trunk Show at Baa Baa Sheep is the perfect way to get inspired. From now until Sept. 18, you can see hats, cowls, a shawl, a pair of fingerless mitts and a sleeveless sweater. All patterns are available as single leaflets.

Join us for a knit-a-long beginning Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. We’ll be knitting Pam Powers’ Challah Infinity Scarf. It’s a striking scarf that is started in one piece then separated into three strips, which are worked individually and then braided. Some of us are going with a subtle earthtone pallet while others are picking out bold, contrasting colors. Drop in any Wednesday to join the fun.

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 5-8 p.m.

Logan and Sabrina, the masterminds behind Anzula Yarns, will be at Baa Baa Sheep with their trunk show for a wine tasting. Their vintage suitcase collection will be filled with their hand-dyed yarns and fibers, patterns and sample knits. They’ll be available to explain their process and answer our questions. They bring sample skeins in every line and colorway. This is a great opportunity to see everything they offer and to help me decide what to order. And of course, the yarns will be available for purchase.
