A message from our president As usual, when I hit a roadblock or in this case a writer’s block, I distract myself with other things that need to be done. So, I call my forever struggling JMU student/son to discuss his priorities and suggest that if he got them straightened out maybe he wouldn’t be struggling as much. We are now moving into the fiveyear plan for college, and I still have writer’s block. " " I call my daughter to discuss some plans for her August 2015 wedding and after 20 minutes she stresses out and doesn’t understand why we have to do “everything now” when the wedding is a year away. I am a planner and she flies by the seat of her pants.

You know what this year is going to be like, and I still have writer’s block." " When all other distractions fail to bring a breakthrough, I sit and knit. I do not know where to begin my last newsletter as the president with so many thoughts running through my head. On one hand, I am experiencing a sense of relief that I won’t break out into a cold sweat on the 15th of every month because I don’t have something written for Sonja, who I can’t thank enough for doing such a wonderful job on the newsletter. On the other hand, I have been energized, humbled and in awe of all the volunteers who served on the board and committees, and helped with special events getting a job done and doing it well. Where do I begin my thanks? Then it all became clear. I will have my say at the October meeting between the knitting contest and the installation of the new board." " Speaking of new boards, we will vote and install the new board in October. The slate is Cheryl Moore, president; Marilyn Estrada, vice president; Debbie Goodman, secretary; and Beverly Boler, treasurer. I know these ladies are ready to get started, and I want to wish them the best of luck. Before we install the new board, we will have the knitting contest. If you plan on participating, please try to get to the meeting early to turn your items in according to the categories. The group will do the judging." " It has been fun and interesting, and I am glad Trink talked me into doing the job. Now I can say, “been there, done that, and got the tote, duffle bag and basket” and take my seat in the back of the room.

You have many opportunities to do some charitable knitting

" Please remember those in need when you are looking for a project to start. Hats and scarves are all projects you can make with your leftover yarns. I will bring in charity yarn for you each month from the Navy/Marine Relief Society for blankets. " " This year during our December holiday meeting we will be spotlighting items for women and children at Samaritan House. Items needed are hats and scarves that are appropriate for them. Take a textile tour of Peru in August 2015

" I briefly touched on this awesome Peru Textile Tour at a Guild meeting, but the details weren't firmed up yet. I think it'd be a great opportunity for us to see and experience where our fibers come from and enjoy a journey of a lifetime with an experienced group. Please support your local yarn shops Mark your calendar for two special October events. On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Sabrina and Logan, the artisans producing News from Anzula Yarns, will be at Baa Baa Sheep for a trunk show. They’ll have their vintage suitcase collection full of their Baa Baa Sheep hand-dyed yarns and fibers and sample knits. They’ll be available to answer our questions about their yarns, their process and what makes their fibers so special. You’ll be able to purchase any of the available skeins. Join us from 5-8 p.m. for wine and cheese and lots of fun.

The Crafted Indie Art and Craft Market is Saturday, Oct. 11, at O’Connor Brewery in Norfolk from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be 50 juried craftspeople with hand made crafts for sale, food trucks, a bounce house, music and locally crafted beer.

Check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/craftedva for a list of vendors, directions, etc. This is one craft show your significant other will probably be happy to attend with you. Baa Baa Sheep is proud to be a sponsor of the event; look for our table behind the registration table.

We’ve had so much fun with the September Knit-A-Long we’re planning one for October. If you miss the Knitting Guild meeting when we announce the pattern and schedule, make sure to check the Baa Baa Sheep email or Facebook page.

New yarns continue to arrive at the shop. I’m most excited about a new yarn from Noro. Silk Garden Solo is 45% silk, 45% mohair, 10% wool with 110 yards in a 50g hank. It uses a size 8 needle. Amitola, from Louisa Harding, is 80% wool and 20% silk with 273 yards in a 50g ball. They recommend a 5-6 needle. The colorways are simply scrumptious.

Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia 3rd Annual “Knitting by the Sea” Retreat March 5 – 8, 2015 Hampton Inn, Corolla, NC

Join the Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia for “Knitting by the Sea” Retreat March 5 – 8, 2015 at the Hampton Inn, Corolla, NC. Classes (which are optional) will focus on knitting techniques.

Thursday enjoy the day on your own exploring the Corolla area. Friday afternoon and evening enjoy meeting fellow knitters, a reception and knitting fun. Saturday will be busy with yoga, knitting classes, a boxed lunch, vendors, and several afternoon demonstrations. After dinner Saturday night (on your own) come for dessert, games, door prizes and knitting fun. Sunday morning energize with yoga, take a knitting class and then bid farewell to another wonderful weekend.

Shadow or Illusion Knitting ……Denise Call Illusion Knitting is also known as Shadow Knitting. When you look straight on to a piece of illusion knitting you see only two color stripes. A picture or pattern can be seen when you look from a different angle. Must know how to knit and purl, must be able to read and follow a pattern and/or chart. Two color s of dishcloth/washcloth cotton required for class.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Introduction to Needle Felting…. Katie Starr Learn all about the art of needle felting, including what supplies are needed to get started. We'll have fun creating a felted picture using wool roving. All supplies are provided. You'll go home with a finished piece and the tools needed to create more projects at home. No knitting will be done in this class. Supply fee of $15 should be brought to the class.

Skill Level: All Brioche Knitting …. Cheryl Moore Brioche Knitting creates a ribbed pattern but it’s worked differently than a K1, P1 stitch. It creates a squishy, reversible fabric that’s oh so cozy! This stitch has its originations in the Netherlands from experienced Dutch knitters. Learn the “Bark” stitch and the "Burp" stitch! 100% wool (not superwash) is required for this class.

Skill Level: Intermediate Set in Sleeve…. Lora Marin Learn how to create the perfect set-in sleeve for your sweater knit from the top down, or pieces put together. You will learn how to pick up stitches from the body and shape the sleeve cap with short rows. This method will save you the bulk of a seam and the challenge of easing a sleeve cap into an armhole. You can then continue to knit your sleeve in the round. This class will require homework of the back and right front of a small sweater. The pattern will be sent with the homework details OR bring a sweater you’re working on.

Skill Level: Intermediate.

DEMONSTRATIONS Thrum Knitting…. Debbie Henderson Thrum knitting is a technique of incorporating wisp of roving into a project such as a mitten to make it warmer.

Skill Level: All Duplicate Stitch…. Cindy Call Whether a knitted sweater, socks, handbag, toy or any other item, you can personalize it or decorate it with duplicate stitch.

This is done by embroidering with a darning needle following the path of the stitch. We will be duplicating your initial onto a square. If you make this out of dishcloth cotton, you will have a monogrammed dishcloth at the end of class.

Skill Level: All Fixing Mistakes in Your Knitting ….. Lora Marin Lora will demonstrate fixing common knitting mistakes. Bring your questions!

Skill Level: All Felted Soap…. Katie Starr A bar of soap is covered in wool roving and then gently wet felted. Like soap and a washcloth all in one! Kits will be available for purchase so you can take home your own felted soap.
