A message from our president Happy New Year, everyone!

By now our hand knits and crocheted items have been given and loved by all who received them. Our needles may be taking a much-needed rest, as well as our hands and fingers. I know mine could use a good massage. Then we’re on to the next project!

Now is the time we think of how we want to make a change or a difference in our own lives. Straighten up that craft room; organize your patterns or yarn. Maybe even list everything on Ravelry!

We will be looking at our knitting resolutions this month at our first meeting of the year. Do you even remember what you wrote down last year? I can’t.

So, here are my questions to all of us: What is it that has you coming to the Tidewater Knitting Guild?

Do you enjoy being out in public venues as a representative of the Guild?

Would you be just as happy with the camaraderie and fellowship of other knitters and crocheters?

If you had a magic knitting wand that would make your dreams for the Guild come true, what would that look like?

The Board and I are very open to any, and all suggestions, dreams or insights you may have. So please don’t be shy, email me with your thoughts at purlingbythebay@gmail.com. I do hope to hear from you soon.

So as we’ve closed out the old year and bring in the new, I wish you blessings and joy for 2015!

December 2014 TKGV meeting minutes After Guild members enjoyed a sumptuous holiday potluck buffet dinner, the president opened the December 2014 meeting at 8 pm by welcoming visitors and extending birthday wishes to Guild members celebrating December birthdays.

The November 2014 meeting minutes were amended and approved.

The amendment clarified the items needed by Compassionate Care Hospice of Chesapeake, which are hats and scarves.

Committee News: Newsletter: Terry is working with Sonja to take over the responsibilities of the monthly newsletter.

Ways and Means: Ann has volunteered to take charge of the Ways and Means duties.

Retreat Report: Please turn in your checks and sign-up seats for the 2015 Knitting by the Sea Retreat. Linda advised classes are filling up fast, and space is limited due to the size of the rooms. There’s a great assortment of vendors coming Saturday afternoon. Fees are $140 for classes and $115 without classes. Be sure to contact Hampton Inn in Corolla by Feb. 1 to reserve your room at the special group rate.

Guild Members participated in the monthly Ways and Means raffle.

New editor to take over newsletter

It has been my pleasure to serve as the editor of the Guild’s newsletter for several years, a period during which we transitioned from a print newsletter to a newsletter that is emailed to most Guild members and also available online.

Thank you to everyone who helps to make this newsletter possible, from the president to the regular writers (especially Chris Goudeau, a former editor herself) and occasional contributors, to our local yarn shops and faithful advertisers.

Terry Swindell has volunteered to take over the newsletter, and she will be assuming the duties with the February 2015 issue. So, please be sure to to email your future submissions to Terry at terryswindell56@gmail.com. It will be exciting to see what she has in store for the newsletter.

31 members knit/crocheted for charity in 2014

By Chris Goudeau I want to thank everyone who took the time this past year to knit/crochet for charity. After totaling everything for the year, I am glad to announce that 31 members knit or crocheted 425 items for 14 organizations. You are very generous. We will be announcing our first-, second- and third-place charity knitting/crochet winners at our January 2015 meeting.

Here’s a recap of the local organizations asking for knitted/crocheted items: SPCA – Pet blankets (must be at least 14” square) Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society – Baby blankets Birthright of Norfolk – Preemie-sized blankets, sweaters, hats, booties, etc.

Chesapeake City Jail – Prayer shawls for women who are incarcerated Lighthouse Center – Hats, scarves, blankets for the homeless. Also, please save travel-sized toiletries for them, Compassionate Care Hospice of Chesapeake – Hats and scarves If you have items that you have given to an out-of-town charity, you should note that on the charity log. Remember to sign the charity knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at chrisgoudeau64@gmail.com.

Please save your soda can tabs to help children

By Richard Quintilone Please save your soda can tabs to help children. There are 22 Shriners Hospitals that provide very special care to children. Our Khedive temple in Chesapeake never asks to be paid for this service.We transport families to Philadelphia, Greenville or Cincinnati’s hospitals as part of our philanthropy. Please look into your heart to save the tabs, which the Shriners recycle to raise funds.

My wife, Guild member Nancy Quintilone, will collect them at each Guild meeting, and I will deliver them to the proper source. If you know of a child who needs special care, please contact The Khedive Shriners at 420-4510.

Happy New Year!

January is my new favorite month. It used to be August, when a new school year started, and everyone was enthusiastic, well-rested, energetic and full of inspirational ideas. But now January brings all of those things. Hopefully, you’ll find January at Baa Baa Sheep to be the great start of a new year. Cheryl and Chuck have lots of ideas for classes. Cheryl is planning on doing the Evolution Shawl for beginning lace knitters, a sock class using larger needles and yarn, and a top-down sweater class, using a pattern of your choice, in News from January. The classes are an opportunity for you to expand your Baa Baa Sheep repertoire and accept new challenges, appropriate for a new year. We’re also generating ideas for free Saturday workshops. New yarns from existing yarn companies and new yarn companies, and new indie yarn dyers are staring to arrive in January, all designed to inspire you and take you out of the mid-winter doldrums.

Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia 3rd Annual “Knitting by the Sea” Retreat March 5 – 8, 2015 Hampton Inn, Corolla, NC

Join the Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia for “Knitting by the Sea” Retreat March 5 – 8, 2015 at the Hampton Inn, Corolla, NC. Classes (which are optional) will focus on knitting techniques.

Thursday enjoy the day on your own exploring the Corolla area. Friday afternoon and evening enjoy meeting fellow knitters, a reception and knitting fun. Saturday will be busy with yoga, knitting classes, a boxed lunch, vendors, and several afternoon demonstrations. After dinner Saturday night (on your own) come for dessert, games, door prizes and knitting fun. Sunday morning energize with yoga, take a knitting class and then bid farewell to another wonderful weekend.

Retreat with classes: $140.00* Includes 1 class Saturday morning, 2 demonstrations Saturday afternoon and 1 class Sunday morning, Friday evening reception and activities, Saturday evening dessert reception and activities, Saturday lunch, and a registration goodie bag.

Shadow or Illusion Knitting ……Denise Call Illusion Knitting is also known as Shadow Knitting. When you look straight on to a piece of illusion knitting you see only two color stripes. A picture or pattern can be seen when you look from a different angle. Must know how to knit and purl, must be able to read and follow a pattern and/or chart. Two color s of dishcloth/washcloth cotton required for class.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Introduction to Needle Felting…. Katie Starr Learn all about the art of needle felting, including what supplies are needed to get started. We'll have fun creating a felted picture using wool roving. All supplies are provided. You'll go home with a finished piece and the tools needed to create more projects at home. No knitting will be done in this class. Supply fee of $15 should be brought to the class.

Skill Level: All Brioche Knitting …. Cheryl Moore Brioche Knitting creates a ribbed pattern but it’s worked differently than a K1, P1 stitch. It creates a squishy, reversible fabric that’s oh so cozy! This stitch has its originations in the Netherlands from experienced Dutch knitters. Learn the “Bark” stitch and the "Burp" stitch! 100% wool (not superwash) is required for this class.

Skill Level: Intermediate Set in Sleeve…. Lora Marin Learn how to create the perfect set-in sleeve for your sweater knit from the top down, or pieces put together. You will learn how to pick up stitches from the body and shape the sleeve cap with short rows. This method will save you the bulk of a seam and the challenge of easing a sleeve cap into an armhole. You can then continue to knit your sleeve in the round. This class will require homework of the back and right front of a small sweater. The pattern will be sent with the homework details OR bring a sweater you’re working on.

Skill Level: Intermediate.

DEMONSTRATIONS Thrum Knitting…. Debbie Henderson Thrum knitting is a technique of incorporating wisp of roving into a project such as a mitten to make it warmer.

Skill Level: All Duplicate Stitch…. Cindy Call Whether a knitted sweater, socks, handbag, toy or any other item, you can personalize it or decorate it with duplicate stitch.

This is done by embroidering with a darning needle following the path of the stitch. We will be duplicating your initial onto a square. If you make this out of dishcloth cotton, you will have a monogrammed dishcloth at the end of class.

Skill Level: All Fixing Mistakes in Your Knitting ….. Lora Marin Lora will demonstrate fixing common knitting mistakes. Bring your questions!

Skill Level: All Felted Soap…. Katie Starr A bar of soap is covered in wool roving and then gently wet felted. Like soap and a washcloth all in one! Kits will be available for purchase so you can take home your own felted soap.
