President’s Message Hi Everyone, I hope you have had a spectacular summer. I have been very busy working. I had 33.5 hours of overtime on my last check. Aside from that I have been coping with a broken-down computer. I would never have thought, only a few years ago, that a broken-down computer would alter my daily life to such a great degree. But with almost all communication happening electronically these days. ... Yikes. ... A fried hard drive is a BIG problem. GRRRR! But I will be up and rolling again soon.

I have been working on my C2Knits "Sedona" sweater. It is turning out really nice. I have also started a wrap from the Sally Melville “Purl Stitch” book. I want to have it done so I can wear it when she is here. Don't forget to let Trink know if you have any Sally Melville items you can model/ display when she is here.

I showed the beaded purse I made at the last Guild meeting. Several people asked me to write up the pattern. I will do that and bring it to the Guild meeting. If you were one of the people who was interested, please ask me and I will give you a copy.

Remember: Because of the Labor Day holiday, our September meeting will be the SECOND Monday of the month. I look forward to seeing all of you in the penthouse meeting room of Westminster Canterbury on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.

W I N T E R S H AW L I N P L A I N K N I T T I N G GODY’S LADY’S BOOK, NOVEMBER 1864 This shawl can be worked in any kind of wool. Size varies as it can be a small shawl to wear across the shoulders or carried out for a large wrapper.

MATERIALS: A pair of knitting pins No. 8 Bell Gauge (measured in the circle) for a small shawl and they should be about 12 inches but a larger one will require them to be longer.

The wool may be either double Berlin, 4-ply fleecy, or Scotch fingering yarn. Of the latter, there is a new kind made in two colors, viz., violet and black, scarlet and black, blue and white, etc., it has a pretty effect for the centre of the shawl, the border being made with two plain colors to contrast with it; the fringe is usually of the same color as the center.

The cheapest yarns or knitting worsteds are only to be had in plain colors-gray, brown, and white, being the least expensive.

The shawl we have engraved is composed of mixed violet and black yarn for the centre and fringe, with plain black and gold-color for the border.

THE CENTRE. Cast on 6 stitches with the violet and black wool.

1st row. Knit the 6 stitches.

2d. Slip the 1st stitch, that is, taking it off the pin without working it, then to increase a stitch, knit the next stitch plain, but before taking it off the left pin, insert the right pin in the back of the same loop on the left pin, and bringing the wool between the pins, knit the stitch, taking it off the left pin, there will now be 3 loops on the right pin, knit the next 4 stitches quite plain.

3d. Slip the 1st stitch, then increase as in the last row, by knitting the 2nd stitch, and before taking it off the pin knitting another stitch in the back of the same loop, knit 5 stitches plain.

3d. Slip the 1st stitch, increase in the 2nd stitch as before; knit one plain; increase a 2nd time in the next stitch; increase a 3rd time in the next stitch, then knit three plain; there will now be11 stitches on the pin.

4th. Slip the 1st stitch, increase in the 2nd stitch, knit the rest of the row plain.

5th. Slip the 1st stitch, increase as before, knit 3 plain, increase a second time in the next stitch, then increase a 3rd time in the next stitch, knit 5 plain.

6th. Slip the 1st stitch, increase as before, knit the rest plain.

It will render counting unnecessary if a small mark is now put on the pin in the centre of each row.- a loop of white cotton or a small bag-ring will answer the purpose, and it is used as follows: 7th. Slip the 1st, increase as before, knit 5 plain, increase a 2nd time, put the mark on the right pin, increase again, knit the rest of the row plain.

8th. Slip 1, increase as before, knit the rest of the row plain, putting the mark in the centre of the row on the other pin.

9th. Slip 1, increase as before, knit the rest of the stitches plain to within one of the markers, increase in that stitch, slip the mark on to the right pin, then increase again in the next stitch, and knit the rest of the row plain.

Repeat the two last rows until the required size is made for the centre.

Historically Speaking , continued from page 3 THE BORDER. With the black wool, work 4 rows, repeating as the 8th and 9th rows of the centre.

Gold wool, 6 rows the same.

Black, 4 rows the same.

Gold, 6 rows the same.

Black, 10 rows the same, which forms the centre of the border.

Then repeat the gold and black stripes alternately as before and cast off all the stitches.

The fringe is made with the same color as the centre.

Cut the wool in lengths of 6 inches and with a crochet needle, loop two pieces of the cut wool into each stitch formed by the casting off row of the shawl, thus insert the needle in the stitch, fold the two pieces of wool on the point of it and bring them through the stitch in a loop, then draw the ends of wool through this loop, and continue the same to the end.

FRINGE. Cut wool in 6-inch lengths.

Use 2 six-inch pieces in each tassel.

Insert needle in a cast off stitch, Fold two strands of wool in half and place over needle.

Pull wool part way through the stitch to form a loop.

Draw the end of the wool through the loop and tighten by pulling tassel slightly.

Repeat this procedure around outside edge of shawl.

Charity Knitting Update

By Debbie Henderson Summertime is a great time to do small projects, such as hats, socks and baby items. Many of you have been busy working on such items and have graciously included charity knitting on your list of projects. Brenda Bunting and her gang of knitters have been knocking out baby hats, which will go to Newborns In Need and Norfolk Neonatal Care Unit. Others of you, such as Vicki Kahookele, Margaret Faust, Linda Johnson and Katie Gerwien, have been making pet blankets, prayer shawls and hats for a number of different charities. I am sorry if I did not mention someone, but I missed a couple of meetings this summer and I know Allison has a bag full of charity knitting to pass on to me. You can keep me up-to-date with your charity knitting by emailing me at hendersonjb@cox.net.

The Chesapeake Waterways Heritage Festival is Oct 8-9, and the Guild will have an information booth there. Not only will it be a time to inform the public about the Guild, but a time to knit, chat and show off our talents. I also am going to take this opportunity to do some charity knitting. I will have yarn, patterns and some needles to knit hats, baby items and slippers. If you would like to do some charity knitting, please bring needles ranging in size from 5 to 9. There will be a raffle throughout both days for anyone from the Guild who helps staff our booth. There will be sign-up sheets at the September and October meetings.

It's FALL! YAY! (Does happy dance.) That means football, leaf fights, temperatures that approach normal and WOOL! So are you prepared? Have we socks and cardigans at the ready?

Well, no matter. You can get a good start by coming in to see us. We've restocked all the lovelies, including our old favorite workhorses, Galway and Encore. If you want instant gratification, we have what has been unofficially dubbed "instant I-cord" – Soufflé. (2 sts = 1" on a 17. Seriously, that's pretty much instant.) Plus, great pattern support as always. (Flicker sweaters. Want. NOW.) Congratulations to our Summer Sock Spectacular contest winners. We had some SERIOUS contenders entered, and everybody deserves a big round of applause for their hard work.

Fall class schedules are being set as we speak, so if there's something you'd especially like to see or do, let us know! We’ve got some good ideas, but we're always open to your suggestions!

K N I T T I N G B I S H O P P A S S E S A WAY Knitting historian Cecil Richard Rutt died on July 27, according to news accounts. Rutt, 85, was president of the Knitting & Crochet Guild in the United Kingdom and had been involved with the group since its founding in 1978.

Rutt spent almost two decades serving as a missionary in South Korea, and he was the Anglican Bishop of Leceister from 1979-1990. He later left the Church of England because of its decision to ordain women as priests. He became a Roman Catholic monsignor.

Rutt wrote “A History of Hand Knitting,” a definitive history of the craft, published in 1987. His library of knitting journals, patterns and other materials is held at the University of Southampton. Selected 19th-century knitting manuals from that collection have been digitized and can be viewed online. See http://www.soton.ac.uk/intheloop/ richardruttcollection.html.

It makes me smile, so I brought it into the shop for all of us to enjoy.

Plymouth’s Bazinga is a huge hit.The vest pattern next to the yarn is selling out fast. Madelinetosh has done it again. Our first tasting of Tosh Chunky is in; 167 yards, knit on a size 9-11 needle. Pam is working on the Boreas Cowl using only one skein. More colors will be coming in soon. I am making my next shopping list, so please come in and add your favorite colors to it. The Tosh Worsted has caught on as well.Try the “Bee’s Knees” pattern or the “Challah Scarf ” to give your hands a break from all that summer cotton. Tosh Merino is probably the softest merino in the shop.

Speaking of SOFT: The Sounds of Silence Cardi” knit-a-long has 240 Mustang Trail begun. If you would like to join this amazing project, there is plenty of room.We have added three “class” times to try and accommodate Suite 8 everyone.
