Hello, everyone. and warmest wishes for the New Year.

I know this is the time of year a lot of people make New Year’s resolutions and I am no different. I resolve (push the replay button) to begin my Christmas knitting earlier than the year before, pick easier projects and knit for only those folks who will appreciate my knitting. Better yet, I resolve to knit for me and not stress about everyone else. O.K., I am good for another year.

I would like to start my tenure by thanking Allison Hunt, Trink Dahl-Prince and Cheryl Cauthen-Bond for their time, service and dedication to the Guild. Sit back, knit, chat and enjoy the meetings. You deserve it. I would also like to thank Katie Gerwien, Beverly Boler and Sonja Barisic, who have agreed to continue serving on the board. Finally, thanks to all those members who have agreed to serve on the board at this time: Lora Marin, vice president; Sue Von Ohlsen, program coordinator; Chris Goudeau, charity; Denise Call and Marilyn Estrada, ways and means; Amy Upson, new member welcome; and Kimberly Villareal, marketing. I still need help with community outreach and events, trips and guest instructor coordinator.

This is your chance to make a difference and bring to fruition new ideas for the Guild.

Congrats to Wanda Gunnoe for sweeping the hat contest in all four categories as voted on by the Guild. The contest brought in a total of 91 hats knitted for charity, 48 done by Wanda alone. Thanks to everyone who participated. The total charity count for the year will be announced at the January meeting.

The wheels are turning on the board and I am excited about the plans we have for the future (some traditional events and some new ones). Our January meeting (Jan. 2) is our annual Yarn Yard Sale. This is a great time to move some of your stash along and freshen it up with something “new.”

Keep those needles moving.

For Better or Worsted Kimberly Nicdao Reynolds and Christopher Alan Villareal were married at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2011, witnessed by their parents, Lily the Golden Retriever, and their three house rabbits -- Charro, Zipper and Julius. Julius served as "Best Bun" while Lily served as "Keeper of the Rings."

The bride wore the Elsebeth Lavold silk and cashmere scarf she crocheted the day, before along with the Spanish Dancer shawl Christopher knitted out of Madeline Tosh Pashmina and Vicuna Fingerless Gloves handspun and knitted by Rae Jean Rimmer of Blacksburg, Va. A lunch at the couple's favorite restaurant, Mahi Mah's, was followed by a stroll along the oceanfront. A larger celebration for family and close friends is planned for this spring at Anna Zilboorg's home in Meadows of Dan, Va.

The website includes a knitting stitch index, abbreviation dictionary, translations for foreign patterns, sweater pattern generators and more.

Another year, another yarn. Or at least, we can all hope! We've already got 2012 well in hand over here in our little corner of Kempsville. From planning new classes to meeting with our favorite yarn reps, there's a lot being tacked to the calendar. Let's see how we're ushering in the new year, shall we?

Classes are filling up the January boxes nicely. The Saturday Technique Series starts up again with Basic Brioche. (No, not bread baking. Sorry.) The ever-popular Beginning Socks – now expanded to four sessions by popular demand -- comes back with a vengeance. Our Andrea kicks off the Square Deal, where you learn new stitch patterns -- basic to complex -- in a way designed to leave you with enough squares for a blanket over time. And that's just scratching the surface.

Yarn restocks have been coming back in on a regular basis,

and the shelves are happy … or rather, the shoppers are happy! If you haven't had a chance to stop in and pet the Qolla, you're missing out. Historically Speaking

In England in 1666, Parliament passed a law compelling people to bury their dead in woolen material.

This was to encourage the manufacture of woolen goods including, handknits, and help farmers. The act was unpopular because people were accustomed to burying their dead in linen, and many people continued using linen instead of wool.

The government imposed a fine of 5 pounds (1 pound = $1.62 today’s market) on offenders who continued to use the old practice. It has been noted that this law was brought into operation against a Salton resident. Elizabeth Dowker, wife of Robert Dowker, interred July 15, 1692, was wrapped in linen. The offender was fined 5 pounds, with one half given to the church to distribute among the poor of the parish and one half given to the informer.

In 1814, the act was repealed.

T IDEWATER K NITTING G UILD OF V IRGINIA M INUTES , 12/5/11 Editor’s note: Below for your review are the unapproved minutes of the December Guild meeting.

The TKGV president called the December 2011 meeting to order at 7:22 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members and guests celebrating their birthdays in December.

The secretary noted the Guild experienced the first known marriage of two TKGV guild members: Kimberly Reynolds to Christopher Villareal on 11/11/11. The entire TKGV membership gives its congratulations and wishes for great happiness to Mr. and Mrs. Villareal.

The president introduced the slate of candidates for the 2012 TKGV board: Debbie Henderson, president; Lora Marin, vice president; Katie Gerwien, secretary. Bev Boler is nominated for treasurer but was not present for the December meeting. By acclamation, the Guild approved the above slate for the 2012 TKGV Board of Directors.

By acclamation, the minutes of the November 2011 meeting were approved.

The president reported the treasury had a balance of $2,533.00 in the general fund and $54.00 in the charity fund, as of the printing of the most recent newsletter.

The president advised TKGV is celebrating it 20th anniversary. No charter members were present at this meeting. Ruth Coleman, Jackie Scott and Cheryl Cauthen-Bond were recognized for their long-term membership and participation in TKGV. Thank-yous were extended to Trink Dahl-Prince for organizing the Sally Melville classes, as well as to all past board members for their service to the Guild.

The charity hat contest was held resulting in Wanda Gunnoe winning all four categories of the contest, the first known winner of all four categories. Wanda won for best technical merit, most original, best in show and highest number of hats knitted. In all, 91 hats were donated to various charities as a result of this contest.

The Guild enjoyed the Christmas Pollyanna gift exchange and show-and-tell of current projects.

After a brief discussion, the Guild confirmed the January 2012 meeting will occur on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at the regular time and location.

There being no further business, the president adjourned the meeting at 8:46 p.m.
