In this paper, I present several interesting sources on the Macedonian population from the 1870s to the 1920s, coming from the correspondence of Greek diplomats, military officers, intellectuals and journalists. Vast majority of Greek officials and scholars assert that the modern Macedonian nation and language were created by the Communist International in 1934. However, a careful inquiry into the source material shows that a very curious terminology was used by the Greek officials, military officers, intellectuals and journalists in order to name the Macedonian population in the region and its language. Thus, we find that Greeks used the terms Macedonians, Macedonian speaking or Slav-Macedonians to denote the population, while using Macedonian or Slav-Macedonian to denote the language of the population.
