Iconographic schemes for heroizing the deceased in Macedonia are represented in two different ways: realistic and schematized. For the realistic manner two motifs have been used: one is a horseman standing still or in motion, and the other motif is a bust. The schematized method of heroization depicts the figure-statue of the deceased on a pedestal as a pine tree, or the soul of the deceased as a sun rosette or solar disk. In both instances the type of substitution of the deceased is both peculiar and unique to Macedonia. Depending on its position on the funerary monument, the same motif could denote either heroized ancestors (pediment) or heroized deceased (relief). Thus the horseman and deceased in the form of a stylized tree (both motifs of local origin), or the bust (a motif of Roman provenance) when depicted in the pediment represent heroized ancestors while horseman or bust/s in the relief panel represent the deceased.
