American AgCredit | 400 Aviation Blvd. Ste. 100 | Santa Rosa, CA 95403 Agloan.com | 800.800.4865 Costeaux traces its roots back to 1923 as what then began as the French

American Bakery. Over the years, the name changed as did ownership, yet the bakery continued to advance and prosper. In 1981, the business whose name changed to Costeaux French Bakery by Frenchman Jean Costeaux and his wife Annie in the early 1970s, was purchased by Karl and Nancy Seppi with some encouragement by Nancy’s aunt, Mary Zandrino. Not unlike her aunt Mary, Nancy has an entrepreneurial spirit that guided her and Karl to grow and expand the business from a mere bakery to a bakery café with robust baking capabilities. Today, the bakery enterprise is headed by the Seppi’s eldest child, Will. The company employs over 100 people, of which the majority are women who serve in a diverse set of roles and responsibilities throughout the organization. Costeaux offers a wide selection of cakes, breads and baked goods as well as a full-service retail bakery café that specializes in breakfast and lunch service, as well catering services and onsite private events. Costeaux has been named one of the Best Places to Work in the North Bay for eight consecutive years and has been a consistent gold medal sweepstakes award winner at the annual Sonoma County Harvest Fair. The company prides itself on its core values — family, community, quality and service, and is thrilled to be based in a community such as Healdsburg.

INTRODUCTION

Women who’ve made a difference in our community

It should be well-known that the roots of documenting and celebrating women’s history are to be found here in Sonoma County. It was 1978 when the first Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration. The recognition was made in response to the lack of educational curriculum in K-12 schools about women’s history. In 1980, also in Sonoma County, the National Women’s History Project (NWHP) was founded by Molly Murphy MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett and Bette Morgan to broadcast women’s historical achievements. In 1987, the NWHP led a campaign that ultimately led to the U.S. Congress designating March as National Women’s History Month. The organization acknowledges the history and achievements of women as strengthening the nation and creating a brighter future. MacGregor said the most encouraging part of the journey to bringing women’s history into U.S. history has been seeing the impact it has made. “The validation has been the most surprising and overwhelming success of Women’s History Month,” she said. “It first started at K-12, we had no idea how much effect it would have on the community and government.” Throughout this publication readers will find profiles of women who made history in Sonoma County with their various pursuits in government, business, politics, journalism and the arts. Of course, there have been many, many other notable, remarkable and courageous women who have made a difference to the life and changes of Sonoma County. It is our aim to profile a small selection within this publication that is being dedicated to our women in business today. 2 WOmeN IN BUSINeSS • November 1, 2018

work together to solve problems instead of point fingers. Year after year Mengali Accountancy receives awards and accolades as one of the North Bay’s top places to work. Earlier this year, firm President Renee Mengali was honored with a Women in Business award, highlighting her leadership role in the organization, business-related innovation, vision and community involvement. For more than a decade, we have operated in a paperless environment using top-of-the-line software and hardware, resulting in high team productivity and client satisfaction. As working professionals we spend a lot of time away from our families, so we emphasize work/life balance and integration, and we strive to make working at Mengali the best experience possible. To keep our team content, we happily avoid the 70-hour workweeks most accounting firms endure during tax season. We encourage personal and team growth with such benefits as Friday Lunch and Learns, an annual offsite retreat, and fun team events. We believe that together we are better. The positive culture and environment we have created at Mengali shows how much we value our team. Because we maintain a waiting list of clients who want to work with us, we are always looking for great team members who share our values and are passionate about accounting and superior client service.

A part of the Farm Credit System. Equal Opportunity Lender.

ummer Jeffus grew up in San Luis Obispo on her family’s farm, where they produced turf grass and sold soil amendments. One of three daughters, she spent her childhood running loaders and forklifts, and began helping her father run the business at a young age. “My dad wanted a boy but I don’t think he was disappointed at all in the end,” she remembered with a laugh. “My father instilled in me a strong work ethic, care for the community around me, and the farming way of life.” She knew agriculture was a tough business and she says she remembers the struggles her dad dealt with to keep the operation afloat, even when she was quite young. It would show on his face at the dinner table. Years later, Jeffus would learn that the farm credit system, of which American AgCredit is a part, had saved her father’s farm and business, which still operates today. “His bank had turned him down, but the Farm Credit System came to his rescue in the late 80s,” she said. That was a big factor in her decision to leave the wine industry to join the team at American AgCredit. She is currently the Regional Marketing Manager, supporting the company’s territories from the Oregon border to Marin County, and is adding territories in the Central Valley.

“We serve ag, that’s all we do. We understand the cyclical nature of farming and ranching and we look out for our customers through the many ups and downs,” she said. “That’s what farm credit did for my father.” Jeffus said that farm credit helped her father save the farm and gave him the tools and resources he needed to succeed long term, much in the

same way American AgCredit stands by its customers today. Jeffus previously spent 15 years in the wine industry, becoming a certified sommelier. She wasn’t sure about making a move when the opportunity presented itself. “I thought, why would I ever step away from the wine industry?” she said. It was then she learned in a conversation with her mother about farm credit’s role in saving her father’s farm. “It gave me chills and I thought, this is what I’m supposed to do.” She made the move nearly two years ago. American AgCredit serves all segments of agriculture, exclusively, with loans, leasing and insurance products. A cooperative lender headquartered in Santa Rosa, the association’s territory stretches throughout California, Nevada, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. She says 95 percent of farms are

family owned, and she is passionate about helping the next generation of farmers and ranchers keep their farms in the family. Jeffus particularly enjoys working on youth projects and providing scholarships for future farmers, but she was also proud to be a part of American AgCredit when it stepped up to provide assistance to the agricultural community following the devastating fires of 2017 and 2018. “I live in the Tubbs Fire path and didn’t even know if my house was still standing for 26 hours. Knowing I could make a difference in the recovery and rebuilding efforts, that was the utmost,” she remembered. “We were able to reach out and make recommendations where best to help and we moved very, very quickly.” In all, American AgCredit would provide over a $1 million in assistance to fire victims.

my’s Wicked Slush opened last year at the south end of Healdsburg, across from Memorial Beach, and Healdsburg hasn’t been the same since. Crowds line up on the deck in the afternoon and early evening, laughing with friends and family and noshing on genuine Bostonstyle Slush. ! We make and sell delicious Boston-style Slush, also known as Italian Ice or Water Ice. And we layer it with the best Soft Serve ice cream in multiple flavors and combinations, called Splits. But I like to think we also bring communities together and support local causes and issues. !

!

!

I felt it was time for a change from my previous profession, and really, I just missed Slush and wanted to introduce it to this area. The thought of feeding a deck full of happy people sounded great to me!

Yes, we go mobile all the time! We do a lot of community events, and a lot of private parties. At many private events, we serve Slushtails – cocktails made with Slush! Slush is a natural when it comes to that – we can make a Black Cherry Old Fashioned that will knock your socks off – maybe literally! " ! We get a lot of requests for different flavors, some with alcohol and some not. If you have a favorite flavor that we don’t have on the menu, I can almost always

! ! The name was the easy part – the word “Wicked” is a Boston classic. The West Coast counterpart is “Hella”. So you’d say that something is wicked good, or “It’s wicked hot out”, for example. So I knew if I made Wicked part of the name, all the East Coasters would want to know what I’m doing. Plus, Wicked just, you know, sounds great. Who doesn’t want to get Wicked sometimes?! We have bumper stickers coming out that say “I got Wicked in Healdsburg, CA”. How cool is that?!

!

! Without a doubt, it’s the evenings – the deck is full, the music is playing… very ‘70s stuff – Bruce Springsteen, or Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline (we’re big Red Sox fans here). Everyone is just hanging out on the deck, enjoying the evening with their neighbors. I’m usually

My staff is the absolute best. They work hard every day to give the best product with the best customer service. My younger son is my right arm, and I couldn’t do this without him. I’ve known some of my employees since they were kids, and I’m so pleased to be able to work with them now and have a hand in their professional development. I love that I have my regulars who go off to college during the school year and then come back to work at Wicked each summer. We are all one team and it shows! I get to spend my days with my favorite people, doing what I love – inviting people into my world, feeding them, making them laugh, sharing each other’s stories. I am grateful every day that I get to do this. And really, what is better than Slush? If you haven’t tried it, you really need to get a little Wicked – it is wicked good!

he women of Big John’s Market are part of a diverse team with lots of special talents. They fill more than half of the store’s manager positions, lead the business office and are represented in all departments. Kim Lloyd, a very active and hands-on owner with husband John, speaks with pride and a sense of family about the store’s employees. “Everybody that works here is always reaching out and wanting to help our customers,” says Kim. “They really want to be a part of our team.” That is evident in the fact that the majority of the women and men employees at Big John’s Market have been with the Lloyds for many years, even decades. By example, Lily Avila, scan coordinator, has been at the store for 17 years, beginning as a part-time high school student at age 15. “I have 104 children,” says Kim about her tight-knit team of employees. “I tell them that we live here, we all shop here and it matters what all our customers think and say.” Asked what Big John’s Market’s picture of success looks like, Kim answers, “happy employees and very satisfied customers.” The Lloyds purchased their Healdsburg market in 1994, immediately launching a major building renovation and adding their own name to the store which orignally was named D-Mart. Another major renovation and expansion was executed in 2005 and finally in 2014, the owners embarked on a 22-month makeover and further expansion that has doubled the size of the orignal store. Today, Big John’s Market offers fullservice departments with a spacious meat department and butcher counter, spotlighted wine center, deli and kitchen, pizza and burrito bar, and popular prepared food and salad islands and a Costeaux Bakery counter. The large independent market also features many local producers and products, including

We share our philosophy that we are part of the community and we make sure our employees all help us put forward that message,” says Kim. Big John’s Market and the Lloyds are prominent benefactors to many projects and groups serving the Healdsburg community. Big John’s Market has been the largest donor to the annual youth

osteaux French Bakery has been in Healdsburg since 1923. Since then it’s changed hands, moved locations and grown to include a wider variety of food and baked goods. The Costeaux that’s on Healdsburg Avenue today was bought in 1981 by Karl and Nancy Seppi, who still hold ownership with their son Will. Named one of the Best Places to Work by North Bay Business Journal for eight consecutive years, the business has a focus on family, community, service and quality. ’ve always dreamed of owning my own business, since working for my dad at his pet stores growing up. When my husband and I relocated to Cloverdale, we were excited to raise a family and get involved in the community. We soon realized that this town needed a pet store. I was excited to share my knowledge of overall animal holistic health and wellness. Once we saw an opening at Furber Ranch Plaza, we decided that we would do whatever it took to make this dream happen. Now proudly in business for five months, Clover Dog has received amazing support from our community! Along with myself you will also see my coworker Kelly there, who has been an amazing addition to our team! We both love animals, enjoy coming to work every day, and love getting to know our customers and their pets. Since opening the store, I have been researching pet food and learning from amazing pet food heath experts. I really enjoy sharing the knowledge with Kelly and passing in on to our customers. It’s a great feeling when you get a customer back in the store saying “your advice helped our pet”! Our main focus is to stay up on the ever-evolving health information and provide a better quality of life for all the pets in our community, while keeping it cost effective and practical for each household. We also enjoy working with local animal rescues. So far, 25 kittens from Anderson Valley Rescue

ecky Ennis: The Cloverdale Senior Multipurpose Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to social interaction, creative expression, intellectual stimulation and health and fitness education. We’ve been serving Cloverdale seniors since 1987. We moved into our current location on 311 N. Main St. in May, 2003. Since then, the Cloverdale Senior Multipurpose Center has provided recreational programming, fitness classes, educational workshops, and other community events. While I call everyone from top down, Executive Director to volunteer, part of the team; our paid staff is made up of all women. This is my first Executive Director opportunity and it’s been such a wonderful experience thus far. We are positioning ourselves to be the recreational social space and place of Cloverdale! Our reach will embrace all of Cloverdale, no matter who you are. I’d like to share a couple points of view from the team regarding their experiences here: Melanie Hall, Program Coordinator “I was going through a transition in my life where I had just finished a long-term teaching job and was ready for a change. I knew I loved working with children, families, and seniors as I had spent much time with my parents and their friends as they aged, so felt confident about working with any age group and that working with seniors would be a good fit for a change. I started out by volunteering at the front desk September 1, 2017 and continued until the end

of October. During the time I was getting to know many of the members and really falling in love with being here at the Senior Center. When I was approached to work as the Program Coordinator I felt I was very qualified as it was planning and carrying out activities much like I had done when I taught, just a different age group.” Karen Sims, Program Assistant “My typical workday at the Cloverdale Senior Multipurpose Center is to open the center, get the coffee brewing and setting the tone for welcoming new day. My responsibilities vary each week as projects are assigned to me. I enjoy all aspects of my position as I work to serve the community and learn the wonderful history of the many seniors and their life stories. I work with a dynamic team of women. We all bring different skill levels and knowledge to our everyday work experience. It is refreshing to work with such a well-rounded, professional, supportive and caring staff.”

o you want a mortgage lender that goes beyond its basic services and etiquette? The answer is, “Of course you do,” and Guild Mortgage in Healdsburg is here to help with its efficient, communicative and personal service with a small town feel that’s sure to make you feel relaxed and confident when it comes to loans. Guild Mortgage has been around since 1960 and since then has been offering FHA, VA, USDA, Jumbo fixed loans and more. However, what sets Guild apart, is a personal, small town, friendly feel — the same friendly vibes you would get from a close-knit community such as Healdsburg. Guild likes to call this their “high tech, high touch culture.” “Guild always does right by the clients and employees and so when we say we have a high tech and high touch culture, we have the ability to build a very successful technology platform that identifies with millenials and seniors,” says Suzanne Martindale, Branch Manager and Senior Loan Officer for Healdsburg Guild Mortgage. “It also means we are very much involved with our clients and employees — we keep in touch and communicate a lot and it is the key to our success,” The lender — the corporate headquarters is here in California in San Diego — has also been named one of the top 10 mortgage bankers. During its growth and success it has still been able to keep this wonderfully refreshing and helpful blend of technology and service. “I’ve been on board since 2008 and I can say our culture then and our culture now has been the same,” Martindale said. Guild Mortgage Company’s punctuality and high skill set has also given them the honor of being awarded the JD Power, #1 highest ranked customer service satisfaction as well as

The business offers government, traditional and conventional and down payment assistance loans. “There is really not a time when I don’t have a product. Occasionally it happens, but that is where relationships comes in, and we are able to partner with other local businesses,” Martindale said. Martindale also pointed out that they are a direct mortgage lender, servicing most of the loans originated. Clients can come in, ask questions and know that Guild will be there for them. t’s enough for some people to have a successful day job, but for these ladies that is only the beginning of their day. Boutique Owner Bonnie Headley, Chef Liza Hinman, Dr. Laura Kimbro and Travel Advisor Lisa Meisner are all supporters of the Healthcare Foundation (HF). These women find time in their already hectic schedules to plan and execute HF’s biggest fundraiser of the year, raising more than $400,000 in a single afternoon and sharing the Foundation’s message with more than 400 attendees. Planning large fundraisers is a substantial task, both in size and import, but these four women make it look easy. By combining their talent, community connections and leadership, they pave the way to leave a lasting impact on the community’s health. " It takes someone with creative vision to put together unforgettable experiences. Bonnie Headley has that vision. This comes from her experiences as co-chair of several charity and nonprofit fundraisers and events in Healdsburg. Bonnie is the owner of the A + H General store in Kelseyville and has attended many HF fundraisers. She says, “I always look forward to seeing so many strong women (and men) in our community coming out to support such a wonderful cause and looking amazing while they do it!” # Seasoned Chef Liza Hinman, owner of the Spinster Sisters, has global food experience and a raft of culinary awards. race Lucero and Bonnie Kline bring new meaning to the concept of a full service real estate company. The pair not only help clients find the perfect property and negotiate the best possible deal for it, they also take care of all the details of turning that property into the home of one’s dreams. Grace Lucero, a seasoned real estate professional and licensed Contractor, launched her career in Los Angeles in the mid-1990’s helping some of Hollywood’s biggest names – Renee Zellweger, Mike Meyers, and Marisa Tomei, to name a few – find and rehab their homes. In 2001 she received an opportunity to work on the Parkland Farms development in Healdsburg and immediately fell in love with the area. “I grew up in a farming area, and I really appreciate being able to live in a small town that’s also close to a major metropolitan city,” says Grace. The decision to move north

was an easy one, and Grace quickly made a name for herself as a Top Producer in real estate and formed The Lucero Group at Vanguard Properties in 2014. Bonnie Kline came to Healdsburg from Boston, Massachusetts in 2009 with a desire to escape snowy winters and indulge in California’s wine country lifestyle. “I love that we have great weather here and still get to enjoy the seasons,” says Bonnie, “and the people here are just as warm and welcoming.” Having worked in the fastpaced world of Financial Services marketing for over 15 years, she was ready for an opportunity to test her skills in a new industry. She found that Construction Project Management leveraged her organizational and time management strengths while also providing an outlet to express her creative vision. Bonnie and Grace teamed up in 2016 to form Lucero Kline, a design-build firm that in partnership with The Lucero Group provides one-stop service for people looking for the perfect home in Sonoma County. “We have so many clients from out of the area that need help remodeling their newly purchased home, or building from the ground up, that offering construction management services is one of the best ways

we can add value and serve the full spectrum of our clients’ real estate needs,” says Grace. Business is booming, with average annual volumes of nearly $40M in real estate sales and $6M in construction projects. Construction projects are focused on large scale renovations and new builds typically ranging in value from $500K — $3M. Business is driven by word-of-mouth and client referrals. “We rarely get a weekend to

)'* ,,$)( ntrusting your best friend to a medical provider is easier when that doctor or technician is part of a family-oriented practice, here in your own town. The staff at Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital is friendly and approachable, and they care deeply about professional and compassionate care. Dr. Martha (Marty) Shafer came to work at Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital, when it was owned by Pat (Cookie) Humphrey and Charles (Chick) Warner. “When Chick and Cookie decided to sell the practice in 2014, I had been here for 10 years and it was a smooth transition,” says Dr. Marty. She attended veterinary school at UC Davis. She pursued a track in zoological medicine with emphasis on small animals. She managed an Avian Research Lab while at Davis and completed her internship in exotic animal medicine at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas. When the pull of family connections brought her to Sonoma County, she joined Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital. Continuing the friendly, familyfocused practice was one of Dr. Marty’s goals, while she continues to expand the services offered to dogs, cats, birds, rodents and reptiles. “Mostly dogs and cats,” she says, “but all companion animals.” Veterinary medicine is advancing as quickly as human medicine, and Dr. Marty places a strong emphasis on keeping up with technology, treatment modalities and current ideas. “I’ve always had a progressive attitude — I started as a scientist before I was a vet — and I want to keep offering really good care in a community practice while we incorporate complimentary treatments like acupuncture and laser therapies.” Acupuncture for cats and dogs is increasingly employed to help with pain, soreness and inflammation and Dr. Kirstin Jorgenson, part of the practice, is certified in veterinary acupuncture. Non-surgical, “cold” laser therapies are also used for inflammation and are especially effective in older dogs and cats. “Something that’s unique about this practice is our senior and

geriatric care,” says Debra Scheuerman, office manager. “The quality of life these older pets can enjoy is really high.” With improved care and nutrition, companion animals are living longer, and Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital is continually researching and utilizing the best treatments to keep your friend happy, active and comfortable. “Even compared to five years ago, we have so much we can do to support older animals,” Dr. Marty says. “Pain management is important for older pets, who may get arthritis just like we do.” Veterinary care is always customized and focused on the individual pet. “A dog that stays inside all day has different needs than a dog who’s in the vineyard all day,” Dr. Marty explains. For animal patients that are part of the practice, Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital offers boarding for when human friends travel. Nails, eyes, ears and teeth are also regularly examined and cared for properly. What should new pet owners and newcomers to the area know about pet care and Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital? “Don’t just go to the vet when your pet is sick,” Dr. Marty says.

“There are vaccines, deworming and dietary concerns. We do a lifestyle questionnaire with all our patients that helps us tailor care.” In addition to complimentary therapies, Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital is focused on your pets’ experience at the vet. “There is a movement in veterinary medicine called ‘fear-free’ that focuses on reducing the anxiety of a visit to the vet,” says Dr. Marty. Cats might go home from the vet with a pheromone wrap on their carrier that reduces anxiety. Sometimes, a mild anti-anxiety medication is used to keep dogs calm and improve their experience, reducing that “fear of the vet” habit. Personal service and working closely with families is a key principle in the practice. “We will even do house calls for end of life for a patient to be comfortable at home,” says Dr. Cheryl Langbein. On a personal note, Dr. Marty is raising two sons by herself, one of whom is a special needs child, and both of whom keep her busy and fulfilled. She thanks the previous own-

Over the next few months, look for a few physical improvements to the building. “It was last remodeled in the 1990s and it’s time for a facelift,” says Dr. Marty.

fter decades of designing for various manufacturers I’m producing my own line of handbags and scarves. I love form, particularly the simplicity of geometric shapes, so designing handbags is a contemplative pleasure. I love trompe l’oeil so many of the scarves appear to have pleats, gathers, or stitching. Each design is manufactured in limited editions of 100 or fewer so you won’t find them everywhere. Right now, I’m concentrating on the Box Bag, both Classic and Rustico – the former is architectural and refined, the latter is more

casual. I design for women who have their own sense of style and playfulness yet expect a handbag to work like a filing cabinet or a portable desk. They’re attractive objects even when you’re not rushing out the door with one, but see it on a chair, waiting. The bags are beautifully made of quality materials. It’s important to me that the workmanship is fastidious; the simpler the style the more important the craft. Each bag goes through several iterations before it’s ushered into the world. I work with factories where the people have the right hands and the right tools – and where they are treated with respect and paid properly. If craft and decency don’t matter, then one’s days become junk. Ideas don’t recognize the clock, so the work day doesn’t begin or end. Like other people in similar fields, I’m working / playing at all

hours. The mind can be taken on a joyride anytime but the hands have more discipline – a steadying effect in the face of rampant ideas. There’s a pleasant confluence during prototyping, the most delightful aspect of this work. The company label, Raiment Chandler, is a pun on one of the noir authors writing in the 30’s and 40’s and much of my work is 40’s inflected. I couldn’t think of a pun for Dashiell Hammett. Can you? Raiment Chandler is not associated with any nonprofits yet. Unrelated to the company, I tutor English through the Sonoma County Library.

Collins is justly proud of the chamber’s well-attended monthly networking events, called Business after Hours, and the chamber’s two signature events: the yearly treelighting ceremony and the Apple Blossom Parade and Fair. “I love people. I love helping local business, and I love being a part of the life of this town,” Collins said.

ebastopol Chamber president Linda Collins is a hometown girl. Born in nearby Petaluma, she moved to Sebastopol when she was a year old. She grew up on her parent’s dairy farm, where she learned to work hard. “That’s really where I developed my work ethic — and my love of animals,” said Collins, who has five dogs (all rescues), a cat, assorted goats, as well as cattle and sheep on the ranch she shares with her husband of 38 years, Roger Collins. Before coming to the chamber, Linda had a long career in banking, primarily with Westamerica Bank. She began volunteering for the chamber and was asked to join the board of directors, eventually serving as president. When longtime chamber director Teresa Ramondo retired after 22 years, Collins stepped in first as interim director. Her directorship was made official in May of this year. It’s working well for Thera and her clients. “Having lived in Bodega Bay for 30 years and having a strong foundation before that, I have an understanding of how properties sell,” she explains, in her office overlooking the bay. For evidence, look no farther than the place where the Russian River meets the sea. The family that owns the fabled Jenner By The Sea has entrusted Thera and her company, Sonoma Coast Living Real Estate Services with finding the next owner of the magnificent property, featuring an historic restaurant and bar and three custom homes on almost four valuable acres. “When you’ve been here a long time, you deal with people for many years and you build trust,” Thera explained. While extraordinary properties are exciting and interesting, Thera prides herself on helping everyone who needs her, buyers and sellers, large and small. Twisst is best described as an ‘athleisure wear’ boutique. This is a growing trend in women’s clothing that allows you to be both fashionable and comfortable. Soft, cozy, high quality fabrics with just the right amount of stretch that allow you to feel good about your body and move in comfort all day long. We are a very diverse shop and happy to serve all. Twisst is a colorful space where we can gather, shop and have fun!

Originally Twisst was my little joke with my husband. We were living in New Hampshire and owned a vacation home in Healdsburg. I used to tease him about quitting our jobs and moving here full time and i would open a “yoga shop.” Well, at some point in time the joke became a reality and here we are. The concept for Twisst changed from a yoga shop and blossomed into a full, fashion forward boutique, and we still do provide amazing yoga wear. I miss New Hampshire and so many great friends and it surely was painful giving up my 30-plus year real estate career, yet life in Sonoma County is fantastic and I love my new business! Anyone who wants to feel comfortable and fashionable at the same time. My target market has definitely changed from what I first envisioned. I had created the business focusing on athletes, yet I soon realized that the market was calling for something different. I have to say, I love the change! Women of all shapes, sizes and ages are looking for this clothing. Helping women to look good and feel great is a thrill. I have also been surprised to learn that a very large sector of the athleisure world is travel clothing. The clothes at Twisst are so comfortable to travel in, lightweight to pack and wrinkle resist-

ant. Remember when we used to wear “travel suits?” No longer, with air travel there are so many inconveniences that super comfortable clothing is a must and women are finding the perfect outfits at Twisst.

Hosting special events is something we really love to do at Twisst. The space was designed for people to gather and enjoy, not just shop. A few of my favorite events so far have included a fundraiser for Farm to Pantry, a yoga class in support of breast cancer research and a raucous gathering of the Wine Divas.

respect for one another. It is truly a team effort. Meeting and getting to know these women has been a special gift to me.

I am waiting to find the perfect fit here. In New Hampshire I was Chair of the Board of the fundraising arm of the cancer center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. It was the heart and soul of my world for years. It was challenging, rewarding

and exhausting — and I loved it. I’m sure the right opportunity will pop up soon, but I did make a promise to my husband. No boards for the first two years.

Come in and visit us at Twisst. Relax on the couch, bring your friends and family, swing on the rings, practice your headstands, have an espresso. Oh, and shop if you would like!

I am incredibly fortunate to have three extraordinary women working with me. We each bring our own special talents and expertise to Twisst. We enjoy and have great

riginally from Liverpool in the U.K, Sue came to Sonoma County in 1986 and fell in love with this spectacular area. A Realtor since 2004, she also has background in property acquisition for an investment company, project management, creating budgets for renovation and staging properties for sale. Sue is dedicated to her career and is known for her attention to detail, empathy and negotiating skills. As a result she has earned an excellent closing rate and many satisfied clients. When asked what she likes most about her career she answered: “My career is so rewarding and there are many aspects I love! I’m proud to say that the majority of my clients come from referrals and repeat business. When I’m working with sellers, it’s crucial to prepare, price and market their home properly and when I’m working

with buyers, I spend a lot of time listening and looking for that perfect match.” “I believe strongly in homeownership and take my role of guiding people through what can be one of the most stressful times of their lives very seriously.” Sue has an invaluable network of resources available before, during and after the sale. In 2013 she joined Vanguard Properties, one of the most dedicated, connected and informed real estate companies in the industry. She feels their marketing is second to none. She has since earned her certified residential specialist designation and the honor of being a Top Producer in Vanguard’s 21 Club. Sue is passionate about making a positive impact on other’s lives and has been a volunteer for “Canine Companions for Independence” (a nonprofit that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people in need free of charge) since 2014 when she and her daughter raised a puppy named Greta. They also welcomed Daisy, a CCI release dog who was raised in a women’s prison in Florida. Sue continues to volunteer for CCI as a breeder caretaker.

here are some weird things about being an elected official. As all moms know, there are some weird things about being pregnant. But there’s an exceptional strangeness that arises when you find yourself in the unusual position of being a pregnant elected official. Starting with: my pregnancy is news. And not just personal news — the pregnancy test you show to your husband, the excited announcement you make to the grandparents, the ultrasound photos you share with family and friends. Rather, it’s an article for the local paper — a menial footnote of local history, being the first female supervisor to give birth while serving in office — and fodder for congratulations and questions around the community. I figured I’d offer up answers to some of the questions I’ve heard so far. Does this mean you won’t be seeking reelection? Heck no! I love my job, and will absolutely be running for re-election in 2020. Do you plan to take time off ? Assuming an uncomplicated birth, I plan to take three weeks (mostly) off after the baby is born. After that, in the early months — what I think of as the eat/poop/sleep/fuss potato-baby stage — expect to see a lot of the baby in my office and out and about in west county. Isn’t it going to be hard, having a newborn and being a supervisor? I’ve had two newborns so far, so I do know what I’m getting myself into. When I made the decision to run for office, Addy was nine months old, and I walked precincts and attended meetings with her strapped to my chest. It’s worth noting that the Prime Minister of New Zealand and an Illinois senator are currently balancing newborns and work. I’m confident I will be able to effectively serve the 5th District. Besides, everything worth doing in life comes with challenges; I look forward to the challenges I’ve chosen, and the joys and satisfaction they will bring. I’m happy to answer questions and educate people about the intersection of public service and motherhood. But I will also say that I answer these questions cheerfully in hopes that by the time my daughters grow up, women won’t have to answer questions about whether they can balance home and work life. By then, female elected officials with babies will be commonplace. Women are natural multi-taskers and communicators. Mothers are especially passionate about the future of our community, our state,

our country, our world. We look at our children and simply can’t help ourselves. It’s strange, then, how few women of childbearing age serve in our political system. By contrast, it’s commonplace for young men to run for office. When they do, and when they have children, they are never asked about their decision to procreate or the impact it might have on their work. If we are going to encourage young women to run for office — which I believe we should — we must support family/work balance for all women. This means access to local, affordable childcare. This means paid family leave for both parents. This means normalizing the presence of infants and children in public. (Normalization of children at public meetings and events is good not only for young elected officials and candidates, but for other parents who want to communicate with elected officials.) If we don’t encourage young women to run for office, the long-running gender imbalance will never change. And the historic data are as follows — Male presidents: 45. Female presidents: 0. Men who have served in Congress: 11,920. Women who have served in Congress: 329. These lopsided numbers are as true on the local and state level as they are on the national stage. We’ve had only seven female county supervisors in the 168 years our county has existed. Three of us currently serve on the board. Women are intimately and uniquely impact-

ed by many state and national policies, yet we still lack equal access to the halls where decisions are made. Our country’s current administration recently opposed a pro-breastfeeding initiative. Federal agencies have confined refugee pregnant women in detention centers without access to medical care, shackling them around their bellies, leading some to suffer miscarriages. We have witnessed the forcible separation of nursing children from their mothers, and the infliction of early childhood trauma on a generation of refugees. To me, these actions are a clear indication that we need more mothers in politics. But while we need more political mothers, let’s also remember that the decision to have children is not a political one. We needn’t overthink or over-scrutinize female electeds’ decisions to have children ... or not to have children, for that matter. (Interestingly, society tends to view childless women with the same skepticism applied to working mothers.) In the end, my family picture is simple and apolitical. One man, one woman, two big sisters, a couple of crazy dogs, some goats and chickens. A growing belly, with all it contains: promise of newness; hope for the future; the early, persistent flutterings of life.

After looking at several new frame lines we picked one that we are excited to bring on this year! We all have fun discovering new products that make people feel special when they wear them. This year we are excited to add DITA to our collection. DITA is a luxury line with 18k electric gold plated frames. They are handmade in Japan. Each frame takes eight months to craft and is touched by over 100 craftsmen. Their frames have design that finds beauty with purpose. Please stop by and feel the luxurious quality yourself.

entor is not Lori Sacco’s title, but it’s the role she gladly fulfills for a team of Sonoma County real estate professionals at Vanguard Properties. “I’m responsible for helping agents do their business the very best way they can,” she said. “My client is the agent.” Vanguard Properties is a fullservice real estate company with offices throughout Sonoma County, including Sebastopol, Healdsburg and the Russian River area. Vanguard made its name in wine country by showing an unwavering dedication to making a difference in the real estate buying and selling experience. Sacco made her name known by leading by example and providing steadfast support to her agents. In 2013, Sacco became a Managing Broker for Vanguard, which holds employee satisfaction to the highest standard. Uncovering a resolution isn’t just part of Sacco’s job, she said it’s the best part of her day. She thrives at what she calls “teasing out the intricacies” of a challenge and encourages her agents to do the same. “Vanguard wasn’t well known five years ago when we started here,” she said. “From the beginning, I was the person in Sonoma County who maintained the brand promise.” That promise starts by listening to the client’s individual needs.

Vanguard knows that every client is unique and every transaction is different. So, they answer questions and do the digging necessary to find just the right solutions, keeping the client informed every step of the way. Sacco uses the same technique every day with her staff, starting with morning sales meetings, followed by training for new agents. In the afternoon Sacco said she focuses on troubleshooting. Under her keen guidance, Vanguard real estate agents have propelled the company to become a real estate powerhouse in Sonoma County. Sacco said showing agents how to deal with dilemmas, questions and problems is the best resource she can offer. “If I can model how to work through something, it’s the best mentorship I can provide,” she said. Making sure to carve out time for her self to learn and grow from other mentors, like Tony Robbins, is essential for Sacco. She said every opportunity and learning experience she has gone through in her life has led her to her current role at Vanguard. After earning a Bachelor of Art in Architecture from the University of Washington, Sacco worked in Portland and New York City gaining invaluable experience to prepare her for the job she was destined for. In 2005 she earned her Brokers license, and was a Broker-Associate with Keller Williams in Santa Rosa and at Mason McDuffie in Sebastopol before founding Bauhaus Real Estate, an independent brokerage. Bauhaus and its agents joined Vanguard Properties in 2013. Sacco said the only way she would leave a company she founded herself, was to work for Vanguard. “It was an opportunity I couldn’t say no to,” she said. “It was the most obvious no-brainer I’ve ever had.” Being a fierce team leader sometimes requires thick skin and an ability to stand strong in the face of opposition. Sacco said it also requires something she considers women to have a great capacity to deliver, empathy. “Empathy is really important in my role and in being a real estate agent,” she said. Sacco is married and lives in Sebastopol. She has a blended family with five children and considers multi-tasking fundamental in training agents as well as in motherhood.

“Women are uniquely qualified to multi-task,” she said. Sacco’s advice to young women professionals is “to find what you’re passionate about, what keeps you up

"'

at night, focus on that problem and find the way to fix it.” “Find something you’re interested in, dig in, and work hard,” she said.
