Welcome to the 69th Annual Apple Blossom Festival Let the magic begin!

W

elcome to the 69th Annual Apple Blossom Festival. There’s something magical about those light pink blossoms popping out all over the orchards in the hills of Sebastopol so we figured why not make that this year’s theme, “A Magical Time”? And then there’s the artwork of Rik Olson, which is magical as well. We actually purchased Olson’s artwork nearly 15 years ago and have waited for just the right time to use it! We expect that the parade will bring many creative surprises to the Main Street of Sebastopol this year with over 100 entries. We’ve worked hard as usual to make this annual event a fun place to meet up with old friends and meet new ones as well. Why not enjoy a glass of great local wine and sip it to the great music provided throughout the weekend? We’ve got some great headliners this year. Saturday, David Luning, from Forestville, returns and joining him is country star McKenna Faith from Ukiah. Our Sunday Blues headliners are Curtis Salgado, Lady Bianca and HowellDevine, brought to you by Bill Bowker and the KRSH. Our Fun and Games Rentals will be back and so will the delightful children’s area in the Rose Garden organized by Mitcho Thompson with

new addition McDonald’s Ranch. We are delighted to feature the Children’s Art Show from the local schools on display on the front lawn of the Center for the Arts this year and you’ll get a chance to vote for your favorite! We’ll also feature some new food vendors added to the usual delicious lineup. Added this year is a special patio with tables for seating and enjoying some of that great food. Crafters will abound for the collector. And this year we are recognizing the business with the most Apple Blossom Festival Spirit by award a trophy to the best decorated storefront! We’ve got it all and the magic begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the parade down Main Street. For all the scoop, go to the official website www.appleblossomfest.com. On behalf of the Sebastopol Chamber and Visitor Center, thank you for joining us for this weekend activity which supports the local economy and a number of nonprofits in the area. Let the magic begin! Apple Blossom Festival Committee Linda Collins, Gio Balistreri, Lu Frazier and John Pittman

Enjoy the springtime flavors and handmade crafts

S

pringtime motifs, sunny images, handmade crafts and festival foods will fill the grounds of the Apple Blossom Festival again this year. Each year’s selection of craft and food booths changes a little with some old favorites joined by newcomers from western Sonoma County and beyond. Booth applications arrive at the Sebastopol Area Chamber of Commerce office early in the year. Competition for the choice outdoor spots in Ives Park is always keen. And, the thousands of fairgoers at the two-day fair are the winners. When the gates swing open Saturday after the Apple Blossom Parade, hordes of hungry people will be lining up for the festival food and drink. This year’s culinary lineup will include BBQ Smokehouse, shaved ice, Frozen Art Ice Cream, Thai dishes, teriyaki, corn dogs and more. Crafts booths will offer everything from metal iron works and apparel to handmade jewelry, photography, paintings and clothing. Returning festival visitors will, no doubt, find many of their favorite craftspeople at the festival. Festival visitors can enjoy the two days of live music, snack on the food treats and then take home a one-of-akind crafts piece to remember the great time enjoyed during springtime in Sebastopol.

Luther Burbank’s Experiment Farm Becomes a Botanical Garden By erin sheffield

T

volunteers at Luther he Burbank’s Experiment Farm have added a new feature to a local treasure. Now all the plants at Gold Ridge Farm are marked with their own engraved signs, listing the common name and scientific name in Latin. This brings the Farm into the same category as the U.C. Berkeley and San Francisco Botanical Gardens. Previously, the plants were marked with aluminum numbers on wooden posts, and the visitor had to look in the self-guided tour brochure to find the name. The squirrels had chewed the signs to sharpen their teeth, and the wooden posts had rotted. Thanks to a generous grant from The Rotary Club of Sebastopol, guests can immediately identify what they are looking at. ”This will be a great teaching tool for children to learn the names of plants,” says farm volunteer Patty Levenberg. “Also, it will introduce students to the Linnaean system of classifying plants and animals. The scientific names are in Latin so that Luther Burbank’s creation, the Shasta Daisy, is Leucanthemum x superbum in Moscow as well as in Minneapolis. It was a lot of hard work, and this project took three years to come to fruition” Most plant signs also have numbers on them. Those numbers refer the read-

New signs at Luther Burbank Farm and Garden. er to the revised self-guided brochure with information about the item. These are reserved for the specimens that have been identified as associated with Luther Burbank (1849-1926). He is credited with introducing more than 800 new varieties of fruit and nut trees, flowers, vegetables, ornamental shrubs, grains, and even the common baking potato. He imported some examples, like the Trifoliate Orange from China. Hearing that it was hardy to 15 degrees below zero F, Burbank hoped to cross it with an eating orange to make the new fruit able to thrive in cold climates. Had he succeeded, we might be now surrounded by orange

groves instead of vineyards! Hard work and persistence were usually required for Burbank to coax plants to be more beautiful or useful. The Shasta Daisy, the city flower of Sebastopol, is the prime example. Looking at a weed in his native Massachusetts, he imagined the flower bigger and whiter and the stems longer. It took him 17 years of selective crossbreeding of four different daisies from three continents to introduce the Shasta. It has since become the flower that has the longest history of continuous popularity of any American hybrid garden flower. Breeders have developed many new varieties with different

shape flowers since it first appeared in 1901. Many can be seen in bloom at the Farm and at Luther Burbank Home & Gardens in Santa Rosa from June through August. We can thank good luck and Burbank’s curiosity for our French fries. While a young man back in Massachusetts, he ran a truck farm to support himself, his sister and his widowed mother. One of his crops was the Early Rose Potato, one that we would use for boiling. He noticed that one plant had produced a stem and on top of the stem was a seed ball. He wanted to wait until the pod was ripe before planting the seeds to see what would come up. The story is that when he went to check, the seed ball was missing from its stalk! He had never seen a potato produce seeds, so this was a rare opportunity slipping out of his grasp. He frantically got down on his hands and knees, sifting through the dirt, and finally found his prize. From the 23 seeds he planted, two produced potatoes different from the parent plant, and one of these was obviously superior. It had higher starch content so that it survived storage and shipping longer than any other potato, and offered more nutrition per pound. Since improved, the Russet Burbank is the most widely grown potato today. Go to www.wschsgrf.org for more information.

Some have been working for 25 years or so, and the business employs high school and college students as well. Executive Director of the Sebastopol Area Chamber of Commerce Teresa Ramondo said that 50 years of business is a big accomplishment, and that the parade is the perfect way to celebrate. “Anytime we get that time of longevity in our community is a great milestone, and we’re delighted to have them in the parade,” Ramondo said.

ebastopol Hardware Center is celebrating 50 years in business and they have entered the Apple Blossom parade to celebrate. “It’s exciting. We’re in the midst of an expansion too and so it’s a big year for us,” said Karen Jones, an owner at Sebastopol Hardware Center. “We’ve had good integrity in serving the West County. We’ve continued to find new needs and try to meet them and we’re a part of the community.” The hardware store added sporting goods and expanded their clothing selection in November. The store also has a new south building that is with their pet center and paint store. The pet and paint area had been there for awhile, and they were able to double the space, Jones said. Sebastopol Hardware Center chose to join in on the Apple Blossom parade this year because “It’s our 50th anniversary and we thought ‘What better time to do it?’ A lot of our employees have wanted to be in it for a long time too,” Jones said. The hardware center will use an old truck for the parade. The truck will be filled with hay bales and previous store owners and employees. Current employees will also march along in the parade, and the business will have some goodies to give away as well. “We really try to treat others as we wish we would be treated and we work very hard on getting our employees to be kind and helpful, and it is an ongoing process, but we really want to be above reproach in the way we conduct our business,” Jones said. Sebastopol Hardware Center has about 70 employees.

‘Blues with Bowker’ Returns to Apple Blossom on Sunday

S

aturday’s center stage includes headliner 20year-old mcKenna Faith, a singer songwriter and Nashville recording artist with roots in Northern California. Opening the stage will be local favorite and “American Idol” contestant, david luning. Luning’s poignant songwriting and warm, rich timbre voice captivates audiences. Luning is part of a new generation of indie musicians whose genre blurs the lines of Americana/Alternative Country, Folk and Blues. With insights beyond his years, Luning draws audience members into an Americana world both familiar and new. In 2013, Luning auditioned for American Idol to receive worldwide exposure for his original music, and to be an advocate for Americana music. Out of 75,000 people who auditioned, he made it to the top 100, performing his original song “In Hell,” which was viewed by 18 million people across the world. Jennifer Lopez commented, “I love it. He has a really, really beautiful tone.” Keith Urban praised, saying, “You have staunch originality, no one’s doing what you do … you’re a good singer-songwriter, story-telling guy.” Luning is currently in the studio recording his next album due out in 2015. Luning will perform from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and Faith from 4-6 p.m. The KRSH Blues Festival will offer a stellar line-

up for Sunday. Award-winning vocalist/songwriter/harmonica icon Curtis salgado will headline an all-star lineup of blues greats for the 69th annual festival. Salgado’s credits include Blues Music Award Winner in 2013, B.B. King Entertainer of the Year and Soul Blues Album of the Year. Salgado is a world-class entertainer, who will be appearing in Sebastopol after completing a tour of performances throughout Europe. His career includes playing with Robert Cray, Santana and Steve Miller among others. Salgado’s slow-burning ballads are delivered with the vocal power and passion of a musical master. Joining Salgado on Sunday will be the 2015 contestant for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., lady Bianca. Bianca’s roots may have been in Georgia, but her heart is in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she is considered the “Queen of the Blues and Gospel. Her trio was featured in the 2014 international Boogie Woogie Festival in Lugano, Switzerland. She sang, recorded and toured the world with Van Morrison for a decade as well as playing piano for John Lee Hooker and as featured vocalist with Frank Zappa. Opening the show will be a Bay Area powerhouse, howelldivine. In the three years that the Bay

area-based country/Delta Blues trio HowellDevine has been together, they have impressed some of the most recognized names in blues and roots music, represented the Bay Area in the finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and signed with perhaps the most legendary roots music label in the world, Arhoolie Records. As owner Chris Strachwitz famously says, “This ain’t no mouse music!” HowellDevine will perform from 12:30 - 1:40 p.m., Lady Bianca will take over from 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. and Curtis Salgado takes the stage from 3:30 - 4:45 p.m. Get your low back lawn chair and be there by 11:30 a.m. for a great spot. Apple Blossom Festival Kids Area Will Have Fun Activities For All Ages by Kat gore

Sonoma West Staff Writer

T

he Kids Area of the Apple Blossom Festival is jam-packed with fun for all. The Fun and Games Rentals Company will be in the parking lot across from the Sebastopol Center for the Arts building. The company will have a variety of games and activities, bounces and rides. Executive Director of the Sebastopol Area Chamber of Commerce Teresa Ramondo said she doesn’t know exactly what the company will bring until they are at the festival, but she knows it will be a good time. The theme for the Kids Area is magic and there will be free farm activities for children including fortune telling with goldfish crackers, magic apple blossom water, crafts to make, as well as a magical garden to explore and play in. In the rose garden adjacent to Ives Park and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts building, Kids Area organizer Mitcho Thompson will work with young-uns on different activities. “Mitcho does a great job with small animals and he always dresses up with the theme,” Ramondo said. “He is very enthusiastic. He’s going to make magic wands with the kids this year.” Also in the Rose Garden area this year will be McDonald Ranch, with a small animal petting zoo. There will be

There will be plenty of rides and other activities on hand to keep kids of all ages amused at this year’s Apple Blossom Festival. animals there for children to meet — including several favorites (including the very tame, roaming, French fry eating hen) that will be returning for the fourth year in a row. “It is going to be fun!” Thompson said. “The Rose Garden is a quieter place for kids to go and chill and pet an ani-

mal, and get a little break,” Ramondo said. For the second year in a row, there will be a display of children’s artwork, similar to oversized postcards, from various local participating schools on the front lawn of the Center for the Arts building. The students were asked to create their version of festival artwork.

The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite piece, and the fair will do something “fun” with the winning piece, next year. Ramondo is hoping for a few hundred of the art pieces. The art display is sponsored by St. Joseph Health–Annadel Medical Group.

This year, Olson’s work has been chosen to represent the Apple Blossom Festival, gracing posters throughout town, with available for purchase at the Sebastopol Area Chamber of Commerce tent near the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. “I actually submitted this piece to the Chamber 15 years ago, but no one mentioned there was a theme — I think that year it had something to do with the circus and it had nothing to do with that,” Olson said. “But they liked it a lot and ended up buying it anyway. They figured ‘let’s use it,’ but came back to me this year and had me rework it. I scanned the original piece, digitized it and reworked it to fit in with the theme and it has finally resurfaced.” A California native, Olson received his B.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. He has studied under such masters as Barry Moser, John DePol, Richard McLean and Ralph Borge. He spent time in the army, stationed in Germany, where he met his wife Brita. After his discharge he and

Rik Olson, the man behind the design of the Apple Blossom Festival poster. Brita lived in Europe for another eight years. They eventually moved to Italy where Olson worked in a print studio in Florence, returning to the U.S. in 1976. Olson and Brita moved to the West County — right outside of Occidental — in 1996 from South San Francisco, where he was working as a graphic artist. He lived there to be closer to the agencies he worked for, but moved north when “Fed Ex evolved” and he could send his work from his home in

the redwoods, where he lives with Brita, “two dogs and a goldfish.” He’s done other Apple Blossom posters, but his art has also been used for the Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival twice. For more than 10 years, Olson participated in an annual steamroller printing event at the Center for the Book in San Francisco, where large, 3’x 3’, linocuts are printed by a seventon steam roller. In 2014, he helped organize a steamroller printing event

Art Workshop of Western Sonoma County Celebrates 50th anniversary

T

he Art Workshop of Western Sonoma County (AWS) will host its annual members’ show at the Apple Blossom Festival, starting with a reception on Friday, April 17 from 7-9 p.m. in the Sebastopol Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 282 S. High St. Admission to the reception is free, and wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served. The show continues on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance to the art show is included in the festival admission. The Apple Blossom Festival Art Show has been a decades long tradition in Sebastopol. With more than 100 new paintings, drawings and photographs ranging from rural landscapes to experimental abstracts, there is something for every family and visitor to enjoy. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of AWS. Although the founding members have passed on, their legacy continues. Several current members are well-known local artists who have been contributing to AWS for many years: Ann Bradley and Lenore Carrion — 34 years; Idona Fossom Larson — 30 years; Arlene Parney — 27 years; and Ruth Robinson — 25 years. AWS continually welcomes new artists, who often take on leadership roles. The mix of old and new members contributes to the club’s longevity and freshness, along with the support, fellowship and activities it provides to both novice and seasoned artists. The art show’s judge this year is Sandra Speidel, who is an accomplished professional artist whose figurative and abstract oil paintings have been juried into numerous prestigious shows in San Francisco and the Bay Area. She teaches at the SF Academy of Art University and also teaches painting classes at

The judge will give awards in the categories of oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed media and photography, as well as Best of Show and second place Founders’ Award. As always, the public will have an opportunity to vote for their favorites. The piece that receives the most popular votes earns an award for the artist, and visitors’ comments and votes mean a lot to the artists. This year a special section of small works donated by the AWS artists will be offered for sale at very reasonable prices. In addition, paintings by previous years’ Best of Show artists will be given as raffle prizes. The AWS Art Show is a not-to-miss tradition of the Apple Blossom Festival, and it all began in 1965 when Mary Peelen suggested starting a Sebastopol art club while driving to a Petaluma art class with several other local artists. Artists from an Analy High School class taught by Angelo DeBello also joined the charter group. The first meeting was on April 13, 1965, at the home of Dorothy Anderson, who was also the first president. Other officers were: Betsy Shimmel, Sherry Jackson, Margaret Crippen, Bernadine Garzoli and Jack Ballinger. Eventually the monthly meetings moved to the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, where the group still meets. Activities included outdoor sketching around the county and demonstrations from professional artists. The group’s first art show was presented at the Apple Blossom Festival in 1968. Be sure to stop by the art show while you’re at the Apple Blossom Festival this year. You will like what you see! For more information about AWS, visit their website at www.awsomeart.org.
