Four great bands will have you rockin’ Ives Park under the redwoods. Great food will be available both days along with wine, hurricanes, margaritas and of course, Lagunitas brews. This is a Rotary fundraising event. With your support we’ll raise thousands of dollars that will go right back into the West County in the form of community grants to nonprofit agencies serving our neighbors in need as well as supporting education and addressing the needs of the homeless and vulnerable. Our club also funds international grants that address health, hunger, sanitation and medical needs in many places the world over. So pick a shady spot in the grass, relax and enjoy this joyful event that happens only once a year. Jeffery Broussard

T

he Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise proudly presents the 21st annual Sonoma County Cajun Zydeco & Delta Rhythm Festival: two days of exceptional music, food, and fun in the Mississippi River Delta tradition occurring over the Labor Day Weekend, September 3 and 4, 2016 in downtown Sebastopol. The event begins on Saturday September 3 with a stellar line-up of acclaimed Cajun-Zydeco musicians and continues on Sunday September 4 with an array of internationally known New Orleans music masters. Jeffery Broussard One of the most influential accordionists and vocalists in modern Zydeco music, Jeffery Broussard continues to be one of the genre’s most dynamic performers. He has continually been an innovator, beginning his career with traditional Creole Zydeco music playing drums in his father’s band, Delton Broussard & The Lawtell Playboys, then moving on to develop the nouveau Zydeco sound in Zydeco Force, now returning to the more traditional Zydeco sound with his own band, Jeffery Broussard and The Creole Cowboys.

Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble Louisiana native Curley Taylor was born into a musical family and he began his professional career at age 16 by playing drums in his father’s band, Jude Taylor and the Burning Flames, a band deep in Louisiana blues, soul and Zydeco. His bluesy, soulful vocals and the band’s hard driving Zydeco beat blend to create high-energy dance music for all audiences. Curley’s music is true to its roots in Zydeco and blues, but contemporary enough to appeal to a broad range of music lovers.

Andrew Carriere & the Zydeco/Cajun Allstars Andrew Carriere was a late bloomer on the accordion but has been making up for lost time ever since. He performs regularly throughout the Bay Area, both with his own band and with the Creole Belles. His repertoire features zydeco, but also includes more traditional French music as well as country and rock ‘n’ roll. The sight of the 74-year-old’s enormous biceps as he squeezes his accordion is truly wondrous. The Andrew Carriere band’s repertoire is the standards and classics of Cajun and zydeco, old and new. Zigaboo Modeliste & The New Aahkesstra Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste is a master drummer, rhythm innovator, percussionist, and New Orleans legend. Ziggy’s creativity has been a wellspring of funk influence for three decades, inspiring many hip-hop tracks. His innovative work as a member of

Zigaboo Modeliste

the internationally acclaimed R&B group, The Meters, as well as his side work with artists like Keith Richards, Robert Palmer and Dr. John, have garnered him an unparalleled level of respect among musicians and fans. Zigaboo’s music consistently demonstrates his brilliance as the premier funk drummer of the era. Henry Butler Once you’ve heard what bluesman Maria Muldaur Henry Butler’s hands can create on those ivories, there’s no going back. Those hands boogie that keyboard like no one else’s. Throw in a classically trained voice aching us through the blues, and you’re someplace you have never been before and would give anything to return to, again and again. A rich amalgam of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues, and R&B, his music is as excitingly eclectic as that of his New Orleans birthplace. Blinded by glaucoma at birth, Butler has been playing the piano since he was 6 years old, and arranging, composing and performing professionally since he was 12. Maria Muldaur & Her Red Hot Bluesiana Band Maria Muldaur is best known worldwide for her 1974 mega-hit “Midnight at the Oasis,”which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere. In the 40 years since, Maria has toured extensively worldwide and has recorded 40 solo albums covering all kinds of American Roots Music, including gospel, R&B, jazz and Big Band. She has now settled comfortably into her favorite idiom, the blues. Maria has recorded and produced on-average an album per year, several of which have been nominated for Grammies and other awards. Frobeck Since 2005, Frobeck has been astonishing audiences throughout Northern California with their unique blend of pop, funk and rock music, boasting a full lineup of bass, drums, guitars and keys replete with sultry backing vocals. With the recent addition of an earth-shaking horn section, Frobeck has entered into the realm of their musical heroes: Tower of Power, The Sons of Champlin and Stevie Wonder. Frobeck is sure to get your blood pumping, booty shaking and your groove grooving.

Analy High’s ‘Rusty Suspenders’ a homegrown ensemble delight

W

hen a group of world-class artists in the Mississippi River Delta tradition take the stage at this year’s Cajun Zydeco & Delta Rhythm Festival at Ives Park on Labor Day weekend, the surprise hit of the two-day event just might be a group of talented musicians from Analy High School, the Rusty Suspenders. Matt Witteman, festival coordinator for Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise, is excited about giving the band a chance to strut its stuff at this year’s 21st annual event. “The festival is a longstanding Sebastopol tradition with Rotary donating all proceeds to both community and international projects,” Witteman said. “The Rusty Suspenders will perform on the Queen Ida stage between the main acts on Sunday, September 4 and I think people are going to be amazed at what these young musicians can do.” Formed in fall 2015, the group finds inspiration in a love of traditional jazz, especially New Orleans style jazz standards, with a focus on improvisation. The band is completely self-run, and finds the time and energy to select and arrange all of their own music. Rehearsals take place after school or whenever the nine talented musicians can get together. While they’re not under the guidance of the Analy music director, the band members are part of the larger Analy Jazz Band on campus. Their unusual name evolved from the outfits they wear at performances — all black with white tie and white suspenders. Somebody commented that they had “rusty suspenders” and the name stuck. Led by Nick Hidy on the trombone, the talented group includes Julian Lehrer on the tenor sax, Andece Newcomer on trumpet, Jennifer Wheelock on

Rusty Suspenders

clarinet and vocals, Grant Bramhamn on drums, Ryan Porter on guitar, Sean Young on bass guitar, Garret Mendivil on sousaphone and vocals and Isabella Bloom on piano. “As a completely student-led group, we all are faced with the challenges of arranging and rehearsing music, along with receiving an amazing and unique experience,” Hidy said. “The upcoming Cajun Festival is going to be a challenge, but we are excited to make the most of it." Many members of the group play multiple instruments and belong to other ensembles, such as the Santa Rosa Youth Orchestra. Some perform at the first Friday Teen Open Mike night at the Sebastopol Community and Cultural Center. Ask the musicians and they will say that they play because they love it. In the past year, the Rusty Suspenders have participated in Youth Trad Jazz festivals and other local events. The group looks forward to more performances, festivals and other gigs as the musicians continue to hone their skills. They’ll be on the roster for the grand opening party for the new Analy band room in September In a community-oriented gesture, the group’s members have donated their proceeds this past year to the instrumental music program at Analy, making them comrades in spirit to the Sunrise Rotary Club, which stepped in when Analy’s band instruments were stolen and helped to get the band back and playing. As sponsors of the Cajun Festival, Witteman said, the Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise is particularly proud to bring the Rusty Suspenders to the performance stage during this year’s visit to delta rhythm country.
