Welcome to our Festival of Great Food, Music, Fun & Goodwill AIEEEEE! Yes, it is that time of year again. The Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise is excited and proud to once again (It’s our 19th time) host the annual Cajun/Zydeco Festival in Ives Park in Sebastopol. Ives park is the perfect venue for such a lively party filled with Zydeco music and authentic Cajun food. We provide a wooden dance floor under a shade tent with four popular zydeco bands. The food includes boiled crawfish, alligator sausage, jambalaya and crawfish ettoufee. There is ample shade under the majestic redwood trees in the park. It is a pleasure to host this really fun event while at the same time raising money for local charities in Sonoma's West County. Over the past year, The Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise has funded grants to the following organizations: Interchurch Food Pantry, Food For Thought, Sonoma Humane Society, Brookhaven School, Analy High School, El Molino High School, the Sebastopol Police and Fire Departments. Ellen Meadows Foundation, West County School District, Ceres Project, Sonoma Bike Coalition, Social Advocates for Youth, Sebastopol Community Cultural Center and many more. Together kith our other major fundraiser, The Guys Can Cook Too
amateur chef competition, The Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise has raised over $400,000 in recent years to fund our contributions to both local and international charitable organizations. Rotary is an organization of more than 1.2 million persons in over 30,000 clubs in over 200 countries who are dedicated to ethical business practices and the building of good will and peace between peoples. So come on down to the dance floor and show us your best moves, knowing you are doing good in the world. And don’t forget to sample the delicious Cajun inspired foods and drinks. We are glad you are here! Welcome! Laussez les bons temps rouler! Ken Brandt, President, Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise

Real cajun, real zydeco — really good music and times Creole United This year’s Festival headliners is the all-star ensemble Creole United, a collection of three generations of Creole and zydeco artists whose pedigree ranges from young upstarts to the some of the music’s most historic names. The lineup includes Lawrence Ardoin and his son Sean, descendants of Creole accordion great Amedé Ardoin. Also in the ensemble is Jeffery Broussard, son of the legendary Delton Broussard, who helped usher in the modern era with Zydeco Force before returning to his roots with his current band, the Creole Cowboys. The band also includes Edward Poullard, who is one of the few black Creole fiddlers remaining. Poullard studied with a pioneer, the late Canray Fontenot, and teaches at cultural camps
throughout the country. Joining them on stage at this year’s festival will be accordionist Andre Thierry and Rusty Metoyer. These band leaders come together to make music they describe as “non jamais fait,” French for “never been done.” The group has a new CD featuring all new Creole, bi-lingual and English songs, with flavors of the past, yet are fresh for a new generation. Creole United lives up to the title of its debut CD, (Never Been Done) but, above all, the musicians remain dedicated to the mission of playing great cajun and zydeco music for dancing. Creole United will close this year’s festival, arriving on the Ives Park stage at 5 p.m.
Andre Thierry
Mark St. Mary Sean Ardion Sean Ardion comes from Aydeco royalty. The family’s musical legacy started with the legendary Creole musician Amedee’ Ardoin, the first Louisiana Cajun or Creole accordionist to record; followed by Bois Sec Ardoin, one of the best-known practitioners of the state’s rural Creole sound for six decades. Sean Ardoin & Zydekool’s hot brand of dancehall Zydeco has been a fan favorite since 1999, with the group performing everywhere from Carnegie Hall and festivals in Europe to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. After co-leading the critically-acclaimed Zydeco outfit Double Clutchin’ with his younger brother Chris, Sean set out on his own musical journey in 1999.
Mark St. Mary lives in Alameda and calls himself the Delta King, a title he received at the Isleton Crawdad Festival. He plays a bluesy zydeco style influenced by accordionist Clifton Chenier. Depending on the venue, he might play pure zydeco, or he might “cut loose,” throwing in “a little R&B, jump, and a little down-and-dirty belly rubbing.” Mark St. Mary’s family came to the Bay Area around 1960 in search of “better money” and greater freedom. “There was no civil rights,” he recalls of those days in Louisiana. “It was just bad. You can’t go to this wash house; you gotta be careful of the Ku Klux Klan.” The family later relocated to the Sacramento Valley but continued traveling back and forth between California and Louisiana. Most of the St. Mary family worked in construction, but they were more famous as performers of Creole music.
Andre Thierry is one of the most prolific and indemand cajun/zydeco musicians playing today in the San Francisco Bay Area. But his stpory begins long ago on July 9, 1979, when he was born in Richmond, California to Olivia “Tee” Guillory originally from Basile, Louisiana and Gregory Thierry, originally from Jennings, Louisiana. Andre’s childhood was deeply influenced by his maternal grandparents, the late Houston Pete Pitre (Pa-Pa as they called him) from Basile, Louisiana and his loving grandmother, known to all as Mama Lena Pitre from Soileau, Louisiana. Andre grew up experiencing the French Creole (La-La) dances his grandparents held at their church parish, St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Andre was captivated by Clifton Chenier and when he was given his first accordion by local musician, Billy Wilson (currently with MotorDude Zydeco), he began teaching himself to play by listening to Clifton Chenier’s music. Thierry and his band, Zydeco Magic, lay down both soulful, traditional slow-dances and bottomend-booming kinetic groovers.
