GEORGE ROSE

George Rose has an uncanny ability to capture a moment with a blink of the camera lens. For decades, he has covered the Hollywood glitterati, NFL athletes, Western landscapes, and the ever – expanding notion of “Wine Country.” A two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, World Press Photo Award winner, photo book author, and former copublisher of the Mendocino Grapevine weekly newspaper, George Rose has turned his lens to the “art of terroir” and resides in Healdsburg, California. www.GeorgeRose.com

COVER SHOTS PROVIDED BY

ERIC ROSS WINERY Winery owner Eric Luse has two “career “passions,” winemaking and photography. Though the winery does take the vast majority of his commitment, wine and photography are so visually stimulating he has to have both! Eric likens the wines to a beautiful meal: “If you start out with really good fresh ingredients, you have the fundamental components for something extraordinary.” Taking advantage of this premium growing region, and by hand – crafting each vintage, Eric Ross Winery takes that same approach when producing their wines. www.EricRoss.com

WEST SONOMA COUNTY

The Sonoma Coast has always attracted the adventurous spirit. Scenic Highway One winds up, down and around as you ride along this spectacular rugged coastline from Tomales Bay to Sea Ranch, Gualala and beyond. State Parks offer numerous opportunities to walk on the beach, climb sand dunes and rocks, and look for tide pools filled with stunning oceanic creatures of all shapes and sizes.

The Russian River Recreation Area is beautiful and packed with adventurous fun. From its mouth at the town of Jenner, the winding Russian River extends eastward through the redwoods and vineyards of Sonoma County. Each year, thousands of “River Rats” enjoy canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and rafting on the river. Navigating the Russian River is not a white water thrill, but a relaxing float through natural beauty.

Windsurfing, kayaking, and riding horseback on the beach are popular activities year-round in the region’s mild climate...or you can picnic and watch the sunset splash color across the sky and reflect off the waves. Wildlife enthusiasts bring their binoculars to catch migrating whales showing their humps and spouts from December through March and again through the summer. A wide variety of birds travel along the Pacific Flyway of the Sonoma and Mendocino Coast providing the rare opportunity to view Great Blue herons, egrets and hundreds of other species that take advantage of the County’s rich coastal wetlands. There’s always a reason to visit the Sonoma Coast and feed your soul.

Each small town in and around the Russian River welcome visitors for One-of-a-Kind adventures in shopping, dining, sight-seeing, wine tasting or a pleasant relaxing stroll. Sebastopol is booming so you’ll will want to walk the tasting tour at The Barlow’s breweries, wineries, coffee houses and cafes! Year-round activities include hiking and horseback riding among the giants in Armstrong Redwoods, a preserve with more than 700 acres and thousand-year-old redwood groves. Kayak, canoe and boat rentals are available for cruising the river as well for fishing throughout the year. The Russian River Area is an outdoor paradise with spectacular vistas, expansive beaches and towering redwood forests.

NORTH SONOMA COUNTY

S O N O M A VA L L E Y

The Wine Regions of Northern Sonoma County make for a grand vacation any time of year. Indulge your senses with the beauty of endless vineyard vistas, heavenly local flavors, and magical little towns where you always feel welcome. The climate is mild and each season brings its own unique color palate. Over 100 award-winning wineries, from famous names to back road treasures, offer tours and tastings.

Visitors have been attracted to the beauty of Sonoma Valley since the Miwok Indians first discovered the healing properties of the natural hot springs which dotted the valley floor.

A springtime drive along wine trail roads will reveal a sea of mustard, wildflowers and budding vineyards in these dramatic valleys. Most wineries have delightful picnic areas where you may enjoy lunch in a classic wine country setting. Autumn is possibly the loveliest time of year for viewing spectacular colors. Harvest and crush typically starts in early September lasting six to eight weeks. The winemaking process begins at harvest, making it a very exciting time to tour your favorite wineries.

The appearance of the railroad in the late 1800s brought Sonoma Valley within reach of Bay Area families, creating a golden era of hotels, ballrooms and vacation getaways. In the 1960s, this valley truly began to blossom when a now-famous vintner from a neighboring valley successfully challenged French Bordeaux with his California Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Sonoma Valley attracts over two million visitors per year with its alluring historic charm, world class wineries, excellent restaurants, entertaining festivals and some very special events. There is always something fun to do in “The Valley of the Moon” and on Sonoma’s charming and historic plaza downtown.

WELCOME TO THE SONOMA/MENDOCINO COAST

DUNCANS MILLS

Where the Russian River comes out of the woods and meanders through beautiful meadows, you’ll find this quaint village that offers visitors 19th century-style storefronts with unique galleries, cafes and shops. In June, Duncans Mills hosts the annual Russian River Rodeo, an old fashioned weekend full of trick riders, roping, BBQ, and a horseshoe tournament. Visit in July, and enjoy the annual Civil War Days re-enactment.

B O D E G A BAY

This bustling fishing village offers world class golf with stunning ocean scenery, boat charters, horseback riding, galleries and gifts. Fresh seafood and other tasty fare are served in an assortment of fine restaurants and casual eateries. Doran Beach is a great place for kite-flying, beachcombing and picnics, the Headlands is a great place to view migrating whales.

BODEGA

Just a mile inland from the Sonoma Coast Highway sits the tiny town of Bodega. Alfred Hitchcock made this town famous when he filmed “The Birds” in 1962. Stop for an espresso or a snack and check out the arts and crafts or visit the beautiful Teresa of Avila Church, built by settlement shipbuilders in 1859.

FORT ROSS / TIMBER COVE Fort Ross is the infamous early settlement where the Russians based their otterhunting operations and attempted to secure a foothold in North America. Tour the fortress and the barracks at this state historic park. Timber Cove is one of the most pristine fishing spots on the coast plus home to the Timber Cove Inn’s ocean front restaurant and wedding site.

FREESTONE

The pretty village of Freestone is a one-of-a-kind experience boasting an historic general store, famous organic bakery, gourmet cheese shop, winery tasting rooms, garden shop, and the outstanding Osmosis day spa featuring cedar enzyme baths and massage set in an authentic Japanese garden.

GUALALA

It’s like a private retreat when you just need to relax and have fun. Imagine… you, the beach, the redwood trees and a few whales playing offshore. You’ll love the people, they’re peaceful and happy which sets the tone for your much deserved getaway. You may even see a famous Gualala sunset…some say there’s an exotic “green flash.”

JENNER

Located where the Russian River meets the ocean, Jenner is home to small picturesque Inns, a wonderful coffee house and the excellent Rivers End restaurant serving fresh seafood with an awesome view. One of the Jenner highlights is the variety of wildlife attracted to this area. Goat Rock Beach is a well known breeding ground for harbor seals and at the lagoon you can see ospreys fishing the waters.

POINT ARENA

Seasoned travelers say that Point Arena boasts some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. The surprise is that this tiny town is exploding with organic cafes, wine bars and bakeries serving some of the most exceptional food on the coast. Great surfing, coastal views, fishing, cycling and hiking too!

SEA RANCH

About 30 miles north of Jenner, you will arrive at Sea Ranch, an internationally famous vacation spot known for blending architecture with its natural surroundings. Hike the bluffs, golf, play tennis, swim, bicycle, horseback ride. Or you can kick back and let the sound of the surf send your troubles away. The quiet, artsy town of Gualala is only a ten-minute drive away.

VA L L E Y F O R D

South of Bodega Bay on Coast Hwy One is the bucolic hamlet of Valley Ford. Once a major cattle ranching center, Valley Ford still retains its rural setting and open spaces. It also boasts a unique wool mill and gift shop, contemporary and familystyle dining, kayaking, canoeing, bicycling, and hiking.

OCEAN SAFE BECAUSE YOU and your family are

our guests, we want you to be Ocean Safe! The ocean is mesmerizing and extraordinarily beautiful, almost hypnotic. But, the ocean is also treacherous, bitterly cold, and has awesome power. Young children must not go below the bluff unaccompanied or be permitted to be alone even on the gentler beaches. Even on the calmest days, a roller of extraordinary size will crash ashore and engulf anyone along the water’s edge. NEVER TURN your back on the ocean.

Check tide tables and know when the tide is rising. Use care when descending cliffs. They can be extremely slippery. If a large wave hits you, drop everything and hang on tight. Make sure the second, third and fourth waves aren’t about to hit you before you loosen your grip. Please be aware, be careful, and be… Ocean Safe. SONOMA COAST

from the name, Duncans Mills was another major player in the early California timber trade. Like Guerneville, Rio Nido and Monte Rio, it later became a vacation destination drawing residents from the urban areas via train in the summer months. You can visit a piece of this history at Duncans Mills’ Depot Museum, with it’s restored Wooden railroad cars Coach # 101 and Caboose #2, from the North Pacific Coast. This tiny hamlet on the Russian River and just a few miles from Sonoma Coast offers restaurants, art galleries, antiques, fine wine tasting and delightful gift shops, and much more.

THE WINE REGIONS OF NORTH & WEST SONOMA COUNTY

A L E X A N D E R VA L L E Y

ROCKPILE

Discover the beautiful Alexander Valley with its unique and superior wines. The wineries of this extraordinary viticultural appellation work together to share their special histories, timehonored traditions and smart innovations with visitors who come from all around the world. See Wine Regions page 5

Rockpile is the county’s newest viticultural area and maybe the most exciting as the sun exposure ripens red grapes to peerless perfection. Cooled by coastal breezes, the appellation’s minimum 800-foot growing elevation is above the fog; 95-percent of the vineyards are at more than 1,000 feet high.

CHALK HILL

Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon do exceptionally well in this terrain that generates concentrated characteristics in the fruit.

The Chalk Hill appellation takes its name from its hillsides that are composed of 200 million-year-old volcanic ash. These offer excellent drainage and sunny exposures. In fact, its location is the warmest in the Russian River Valley, with hills preventing the intrusion of coastal fog. Chalk Hill was declared a separate, unique viticultural area within the Russian River AVA in 1983. For wine lovers, the appeal of the Chalk Hill region is driven by highly esteemed Sauvignon Blancs, powerful Chardonnays, and defining Cabernet Sauvignons whose grapes thrive on the tawny slopes. Cabernet Francs and Merlots also do well in this appellation.

D RY C R E E K VA L L E Y The dramatic beauty and allure of the Dry Creek Valley encompasses lush vineyards that extend from the magnificent valley floor into the gently rolling hills, producing grapes of extraordinary quality and character. The natural advantages of an ideal blend of climate, soil, and exposure help produce the truly exceptional wines for which Dry Creek Valley is known, both locally and globally. See Wine Regions page 2

G R E E N VA L L E Y This appellation is a small designation contained within the southwest Russian River AVA. In the early 1900s, a Sebastopol newspaper editor coined the term “Goldridge” to reflect the booming success of the many fruit growers whose orchards thrived along the hills that run southwest from the Russian River through Graton and Sebastopol. Both soil and climate suit Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, which are vinted into both still and sparkeling wines. Other varietals that do well here are cool-climate Syrah and Zinfandel clones.

K N I G H T S VA L L E Y The warmest of Sonoma County’s viticultural areas, Knights Valley is located on the hilly Mayacamas Mountain Range and derives its heat from its lofty perch on high hills beyond the reach of the Pacific Ocean’s influence. Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot are grown in the 2,000 acres planted to vineyards. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier and Syrah, also thrive in this climate of warm days and cool nights. It is among the original five Sonoma County AVAs to be designated in 1983.

R U S S I A N R I V E R VA L L E Y The Russian River Valley has a rich tradition of farming and is one of the premier wine growing regions in the world today. Winegrowers include both direct descendents of the Italian-American growers who established farms more than a hundred years ago, as well as many of the more recent innovators responsible for the rebirth of premium winemaking in the 1970s and 1980s. See Wine Regions page 2

SONOMA COAST This AVA comprises more than half a million acres, stretching from San Pablo Bay on the south to the Sonoma/ Mendocino Pacific Coastline border on the north. A host of micro-climates are contained within this large appellation, parts of which also overlap with other Sonoma County appellations like the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. Cold-climate, estate-bottled producers scattered across this area have over 7,000 acres planted, mostly above the marine layer and fog line. Soils of the Sonoma Coast are rocky and well-drained, so cool climate, slow ripening varietals thrive here, such as finicky Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.

PINE MOUNTAIN-CLOVERDALE PEAK Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak is one of the highest elevation grape-growing regions in California, with grapes growing primarily at 1,800 feet and above. Soils are volacanic, gravelly loam. Valley vineyards are chilly at night, while high elevation sites remain relatively warm. Temperatures are also affected by marine inversion, created by heavy, moist, cold marine fog slipping beneath warmer air, trapping it well above the valley to grow distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot. AVA Est. 2011

F O R T RO S S - S E AV I E W The Fort Ross-Seaview appellation in Western Sonoma County was established as an AVA in 2012 and lies entirely within the Sonoma Coast AVA. This “coastal-cool” region is located on the steep coastal ridges above the Pacific Ocean and the natural fog line, allowing for more sunshine and warmer temperatures than the surrounding, lower-lying areas. Perfect for growing Pinot Noir followed by Chardonnay.

In doing so, the Sebastopol Citta Slow has become a catalyst for the active participation of the organizations you see on this page (and many more) to realize these priorities in their city as it grows into a conscious and responsible tourism destination. The six priorities of a “Slow City” (Cittaslow): • Support locally made products and agriculture • Celebrate our history and culture • Welcome visitors and embrace neighbors • Integrate technologies for improved well-being • Protect the health of the environment • Develop community-friendly infrastructure (walk ways, bike paths, open space and parks) Check out our website: www.cittaslowsebastopol.org LIKE us on Facebook: facebook.com/CittaslowSebastopol Sign up for e-updates: www.CittaslowSebastopol.org/ newsletter

wine bars, tasting rooms and gourmet food shops enables you to discover a more intimate experience. Depending on the season, you may meet a winemaker pouring your wine or a café owner creating small bites for you to taste. Most folks in town are casual and unpretentious so there’s no need to dress up when you’re in Sonoma. One of the great advantages of wine tasting in and around the Plaza is that you can walk from one tasting room to another while learning about many of the area’s high quality, small-lot wines.

THE CHOCOLATE COW family has delighted visitors for

more than 20 years with their unique, hand-crafted selection of chocolates, fudge, gelato, ice cream, snow cones, candy and cow-llectibles. PASSAGGIO WINES Owner-Winemaker Cindy Cosco continues the family winemaking tradition with a new generation of hand-crafted, fruit forward, terroir driven, food friendly wines. Taste Passaggio Artisan Wines in the Napa Street passageway on the historic Sonoma Plaza. PETRONI VINEYARDS is a family owned boutique winery offering 8 organically farmed, estate produced red and white wines of great depth and complexity including their flagship wine “Brunello di Sonoma” made from Sangiovese grapes. WELCOME TO NORTH SONOMA COUNTY

HEALDSBURG

The charming and historic town of Healdsburg is tucked between three gorgeous valleys: Alexander, Russian River and Dry Creek. The Russian River itself carves a sinuous border around the south end of town after it passes behind the forested cone of Fitch Mountain. Many of the names in Healdsburg reflect the people who settled here and built the town and its reputation into a thriving and friendly city. Healdsburg is surrounded by world-class wineries and boasts over 20 wine tasting rooms sprinkled within walking distance of the Historic Plaza downtown. The Spanish-style town plaza is rimmed with a fantastic array of shops, cafes, galleries, spas, restaurants and breweries as well. The natural beauty of this area inspires sculptors, artists, photographers and artisans from every genre. They show their work in exciting gallery settings around the plaza and nearby. In season, you can enjoy free weekly public concerts in the park or visit the downtown farmers market on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Healdsburg’s appeal stems from its friendly nature, proximity to outdoor adventure, rich cultural offerings and wine country flavors.

SANTA ROSA

The largest city in Sonoma County, Santa Rosa is an urban blend of art, culture, shopping, dining and attractions. Tour the home and gardens of famed horticulturist Luther Burbank, who introduced more than 800 varieties of plants, fruits and vegetables to the world. Beloved cartoonist and longtime resident Charles Schulz also left his mark on Sonoma County; you can see his Peanuts legacy at the Charles M. Schultz Museum and Ice Arena. Spend some time in historic Railroad Square with its stone buildings, visitor center, restaurants, coffee houses, art, antique and specialty shops. Santa Rosa also boasts over 500 acres of parks for strolling, hiking or bicycling. You can sail on Lake Ralphine at Howarth Park or camp, paddle and fish at Spring Lake Park, both of which are adjacent to Annadel State Park. Cultural arts venues include the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, 6th Street Playhouse, Sonoma County Museum, and the Pacific Coast Air Museum.

WINDSOR

North of Santa Rosa you will find Sonoma County’s newest city, Windsor. It actually has roots going back to 1855, but was only incorporated in 1992. Early settler Hiram Lewis gave it the name Windsor because it reminded him of the wide-open English countryside surrounding Windsor Castle. Today, the Town Green Village of Old Downtown Windsor holds court over the expansive outdoor plaza and park. Stroll the retail shops, dine and wine taste to your heart’s desire. A year-round weekly farmers’ market comes alive at the Town Green on Sunday mornings and is joined in the summertime by a Thursday evening market. Also during the summer months, the Town of Windsor hosts Summer Nights on the Green—family film showings on Tuesday nights and outdoor music concerts on Thursday nights.

GEYSERVILLE

Geyserville, formerly known as Clairville Station, is a cool, historic town named after a man tracking a grizzly bear east of town when he discovered steam vents in a canyon. The name stuck and the geysers became a sightseeing attraction - who knew? By 1863, a stage line ran on a route between Healdsburg and a resort at “The Geysers.” Today, Geyserville is a colorful community and its environs are rich with wineries, B & B’s, outstanding restaurants, shops and art galleries. Cyclists love it, canoes can always be seen on the upper reach of the Russian River, boats on nearby Lake Sonoma.

CLOVERDALE

The northernmost city in Sonoma County, Cloverdale boasts a burgeoning arts, dining, coffee house and entertainment scene. See live theater at the Cloverdale Performing Arts Center; browse Towers Gallery and see art in many forms crafted by local and regional artists; tour Cloverdale’s Museum and History Center; enjoy the Sculpture Trails’ sidewalk art; savor freshly baked artisan breads, to “grab and go” and Italian cuisine. Cloverdale’s Friday Night Live free summer music series and Certified Farmers Market grows in popularity every year. A great place to visit anytime of the year!
