Welcome to the 2017 Fair! Welcome message from the mayor of Healdsburg t’s almost time for the 68th annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and I am excited about it. This years’ theme of “The World’s Biggest Little Fair” will kick off with the Twilight Parade on Thursday May 25, continuing until Saturday with livestock auctions, animal shows, daily circus acts and of course, the midway! I will always remember the first time I participated in the parade by
driving a flatbed tow truck with a jazz band set up on the back playing a continuous loop of “When the Saints Come Marching In.” Be sure to make plans to see the parade with all of its floats representing local nonprofit organizations, businesses, schools and public safety vehicles. Always stay ‘til the end to see my favorite participants bring up the rear – the fabulous fancy horses. After that, head over to
I
Recreation Park to support all of the young farmers who have worked hard all year raising their animals. On behalf of the City Council I would like to thank the Healdsburg Future Farmers organization and participants for an event that keeps our rural roots and small town character alive and well while providing fun for the whole family. See you there! — Shaun McCaffery Mayor, City of Healdsburg
Message from the Future Farmers Country Fair board president ith this fast paced, high tech world consuming our daily lives, it is time to take a break and slow down. Come enjoy the traditions of the fair and the twilight parade. The parade kicks off on Thursday evening with local floats presented by clubs and organizations that are formed not only in our community but around the area. Then save up your appetite for after the parade and head to Rec Park and enjoy all the food booths and nostalgic games that are provided by the local nonprofits. Pull on your best cowboy boots and head back
W
to Rec Park on Friday to spend a little time meandering around the still exhibits and animal exhibits that will be presented by the 4-H and FFA members at the various livestock shows. The young people of the 4-H and FFA have been working on this projects for months. You will probably run into Andy the clown along the way. Also, the cake and barrel auction and adult showmanship is in the afternoon, bring some laughs and fun. Saturday, the grand finale with Round Robin, awards ceremony and buyers dinner. The auction kicks off with the dedication and
Paul Wittke steer. The auction is when the good folks from around the area shine with their generosity and support. The HFFCF fair board can’t thank the community enough for such tremendous support! A special thanks to all the directors who have dedicated countless hours. I have witnessed firsthand the time and dedication you have put in to provide this fair. So come out and enjoy this unique fair. There is entrainment for all ages! — HFFCF President Mike Brookfield

Junior Fair Board — The next generation of community leaders
he Junior Executive Board is composed of volunteers selected by their peers to represent their clubs at Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board meetings. These volunteers meet prior to the regular board meetings, to talk about their responsibilities and prepare for the upcoming fair. They organize the garden barrel competition, the kids day activities, the petting zoo, adult showmanship, Friday night entertainment, and the clean-up after the fair. This year they have added FFA Ag day on Thursday the 25th of May. They have volunteered for a very big responsibility, they always rise to the occasion with great enthusiasm. Aside from their involvement to organize these events, they are also working diligently with their own exhibits. Each Junior Executive Board member wrote a description about themselves for the fair program, and they all wish you an enjoyable fair.
T
Adryen Rea: I am an 18 year old senior at Healdsburg High School. I am in Alexander Valley 4-H and Healdsburg FFA. In 4-H I raise market hogs. This is my third year of showing market hogs. In FFA I raise market and breeding rabbits. This is my fourth year of showing market rabbits. This year I have one hog, named Oinker. She is a cross breed. She loves belly rubs and long walks through the vineyards. While raising her, I learned I need to be patient with her, how to be responsible and care for another living thing. Along with raising Oinker, I raise breeding rabbits throughout the year. I also have a meat pen of rabbits to take to Healdsburg Future Farmers Fair. I have two more baby hogs I recently got that I will raise for Sonoma County Fair. Along with raising livestock, I race my jeep in mudd boggs. I have my own team, Team Asyen Mudd Bogging. After finishing high school, I plan to go to Santa Rosa Junior College for two years, then transferring to a four-year. I want to become an agriculture teacher along with studying large animal vet. Alexis Biasotti: I am 14 years old and in eighth grade at Healdsburg Junior High. I have been in 4-H for 9 years and I have shown pigs for 6 years. So far I have raised 26 pigs. I love being in 4-H learning commitment, hard work and responsibility, it has helped
me gain a lot of confidence. Next year I will attend Healdsburg high school and I’m looking forward to joining the Ag program. Amy Rodgers: I am the president of Lytton Springs 4-H. I have been in 4-H for 12 years and this is my last year because I will be graduating this spring. I am a senior at Rincon Valley Christian School, and an active member of Student Government. This is my second year being on the HFFCF Jr. Executive Board. This is also my second year co-chairing Kid’s Day at the fair. At Healdsburg Fair this year I will be bringing my market lamb, market steer, pygmy goats and still exhibits. I always have fun at the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and I hope you will too. Andrew Nunez: I am currently a member of the Healdsburg Jr. Fair Board. I have been a part of 4-H and FFA for 10 years, where I have raised livestock and help others along the way. I am currently a senior at Healdsburg High School. I enjoy the great outdoors, wrestling and raising cattle. Recently I have been honored to receive the Star Farmer Award for Northern California, where I will now be competing for the Star Farmer of California. I am the Vice President for the Healdsburg FFA chapter. I show cattle at numerous jackpot shows around the country and plan on continuing my cattle operation for years to come. This year at the fair I will be showing a steer and a hog. After graduating I will be attending a 4-year college, where I will major in agriculture business and accounting. This year for the Jr. Fair Board I am in charge of adult showmanship, as well as overseeing other committees and helping out when needed. I hope to see you at our amazing local fair. Dillon Dunkel: I have been a part of 4-H for over 7 years and am now participating in my first year of FFA. I have raised swine for 6 years now and this year began raising a steer. My steer has been lots of fun although it is more work but I think that the extra work is worth it. So far this year my steer has been to 3 jackpot shows where I did not always win but still had fun learning and showing. Since I have been participating in our local fair for several years I decided last
year I would like to increase my participation by helping run the fair. On the Jr. Fair board my job is to help with all of the committees and see where they need help. This year I look forward to showing my animals as well as help run the fair so that it is enjoyable for everyone. Kristen Beth: I am a third generation 4-Her in Healdsburg. I am a member of the Alexander Valley 4H club and Healdsburg FFA chapter. I have been a member of Alexander Valley 4-H for 10 years; where I am currently the president and a member of Healdsburg FFA for three years. Between these two groups I raise a variety of small animals; rabbits, chickens, goats and dogs. This year I am even raising a market lamb. I keep myself busy year round showing my dogs. Outside of 4-H I also show my Basset Hound at AKC dog shows, with this I have obtained four national titles at The Basset Hound Club of America National Specialty. When I am not showing my animals I play on two sports teams through the high school. I am currently on the varsity softball team, which I have been on for four years now. I also am a varsity golfer which I have been for the past three years. Lola Plum: I am a junior at Healdsburg High School. I have been showing livestock since I was 11, but this is my third year showing under FFA. This is my second year on Junior Fair board and I am excited to see all of our work play out the at Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. I am currently the historian for the Healdsburg FFA chapter and the secretary for the Lytton Springs 4-H club. This year, I will be bringing a steer and a pig to be exhibited at the fair. Along with raising livestock, I am part of the Healdsburg High School varsity soccer team and also work at Healdsburg Toffee Company. I hope you enjoy the fair this year. Spencer Alden: I have tended to farm animals all my life. This year I will have been in 4-H for 8 years, and each year I have raised my project of market

The 2017 fair is dedicated to the Steindorf family
he 2017 Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair is dedicated to the Wayne and Karen Steindorf family. The honor may seem long overdue, but the fair board had to wait until Wayne retired from the board after serving since 1968. Children Leo, Lynn and Lisa, who now have children exhibiting at the fair, are also being honored. “I guess I was pretty young when Wayne joined the board,” said fair board member Tom
T
Rued. “I do know he was my 4-H leader a long time ago.” Rued is now 50. FFA leaders dedicated to community and agriculture ealdsburg High School has its own chapter of Future Farmers of America and FFA members are active all year long. Taylor Richardson is a senior and is the president of the HHS FFA chapter. Taylor has been showing animals at the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair since she was a 9 year old 4-H member. That first year, she showed a goat and vowed she would never do so again. “Goats are like mini-dogs and they’re very smart. It’s hard to let go. It’s easier with sheep.” Taylor has been showing market lambs ever since, but this year decided to try a goat again, along with another lamb. As FFA chapter president, Taylor said, “My job is to make sure all the other officers are doing their jobs and I run meetings, but I also make sure all the first year members feel welcomed. It’s a lot of responsibility but I’ve been prepared for it by being an officer before.” What are her favorite things about FFA? “My favorite part is being able to engage with the other kids and in our chapter. As time goes on we have more kids who have non-traditional; ways to get into FFA. They
oung women were excluded from FFA when it was founded in Kansas City, Missouri in 1928. According to official FFA history, women were first welcomed in 1969. In Healdsburg, young women have long been an integral part of local agriculture and FFA. Madilyn Burke is a junior at Healdsburg High School and is this year’s FFA Sweetheart. Being a “sweetheart” is not a popularity contest — like other FFA leaders, Madilyn works hard to represent her chapter and FFA. She started showing livestock through 4-H when she was 8 years old and has shown market hogs since then. Why does she like working with hogs? “It’s a lot of work, but it’s very fun, “ she said. “I’m so glad 4-H and FFA gave me the opportunity. It also allowed me to earn money for college.” Madilyn is going to apply to colleges that offer ag programs, such as Cal Poly, david and Chico. “I want to go into some kind of as business marketing so I can stay in Healdsburg. And, I want to use my photography skills.” What are her favorite things about FFA? “I love everything about FFA, I

might not have ag experience in their everyday lives and it’s interesting to hear their stories and help them.” Taylor is going to Chico in the fall and wants to major in Ag Education. “I want to be an Ag teacher in my future.” — Ray Holley

Sir Rusty more than a half-century tradition at the fair his is the 51st year that Sir Rusty has been a part of the fair. Sir Rusty is one of the main fundraisers for the fair. The proceeds from the sales of Sir Rusty tickets help the fair board pay for entertainment, awards and activities that are important in keeping the fair going. Each young exhibitor, FFA and 4-H, who brings a market animal to the fair, is required to sell at least 20 Sir Rusty tickets per animal that they have entered in the auction. The fair board members are required to sell 50 tickets each. The fair board sponsors an award of a belt bucket to the 4-H or FFA member who sells the most tickets overall. This year tickets are selling like crazy. Tom Mauritson sponsors the drawing each year, reimbursing the fair board for its expenses for the prizes, whether cash or meat. The fair board printed 10,000 Sir Rusty tickets this year. A $1 donation entitles you to a chance to win one of two grand prizes of $500 Painted Hills Beef (or $500 cash), or one lamb (or $100 cash). The animals are freezer ready. The Sir Rusty drawing winner is announced during Saturday night’s livestock auction, May 27. (Need not be present to win). The $1 tickets have four great discounted coupons this year. Round Table Pizza, McLea’s Tire and Automotive Center, Costeaux French Bakery and Summer’s Market and Deli. Round Table Pizza is offering $3, $2 and $1 off select pizzas. McLea’s is offering $20 off any automotive repair. Costeaux French Bakery is offering a

Judges bring lifetimes of expertise and support to the fair ur livestock judges are dedicated professionals who do so much more than evaluate the animals our youth bring to the fair. They work with our young people to help them bring out the best in their animals and themselves. We are grateful to the judges for all they do to make this a great experience for our kids. Swine judge: We are happy to welcome back Shane Geist as our swine judge this year. Shane graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Animal Science and a Masters from Cal Poly. He was a member of the Reserve National Champion Judging team in 2000 at Kansas State. He works for Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceuticals as a Territory Manager. Shane is married and they own and operate Geist Cattle Co, which is a club calf and purebred operation, where they have raised champions from local to National levels. He and his wife have two young daughters who are just starting their show careers. Beef Judge: We are happy to welcome for the first time, John Gladman as our beef judge this year. John grew up in southern Oregon and showed cattle, sheep and hogs in high school before attending Linn Benton Community College. During his time at Linn Benton Community College he was a member of the 2009 Louisville champion livestock judging team. He later went on to attend California State University, Chico and judge on their nationally competitive livestock judging team before graduating with a bachelors degree in Animal Science. He and his wife and daughter currently reside in the town of Glenn and raise show cattle and
O
operate a feed store specializing in livestock show feeds and supplements. Pygmy Goat Judge: We will be welcoming for the first time as our pygmy goat judge, Jennifer Lozoya. Jennifer was a member of 4-H for 10 years and was active in pygmy goats the entire duration. After turning 18 she flew to Louisiana to obtain her judging license. She has judged in over 20 different states. She also serves on the committee which tests new potential judges. She enjoys judging because of all the wonderful people she has met in so many different places and because she enjoys promoting the breed. She particularly enjoys working with the youth and hopes her enthusiasm encourages others to stick with showing. She resides in Cottonwood with her husband and two children who also enjoy accompanying her to goat shows. Sheep and Goat Judge: For the first time we are welcoming Matt Hayes as our sheep and goat judge. Matt received his Bachelors degree in Agriculture Education from Fresno State in 2010. Prior to this he was a member of the 2007-2008 Delta College Livestock Judging Team, as well as a member of the 2004 National Champion FFA Livestock Judging Team, where he was High Individual Overall. Matt lives with his family in Winters, California where they own and operate Hayes Livestock. They manage 25 head of Wether dam ewes and 20 head of registered Southdown ewes. Currently he is employed by Superior Farms in Dixon, California as a livestock buyer. Rabbit Judge: This year we are happy to have Brooke Galiata as our rabbit judge. Brooke is a Petaluma native. She raised rabbits since her youth in 1989 as both a 4-H and FFA showman. She has raised over 20 breeds and has been an ARBA licensed judge since 1998. Now a mother of three, Brooke still resides in Penngrove, CA Poultry Judge: We are very happy to have Conor Keegan back as our poultry judge this year. He has been involved in purebred poultry for the past 30 years. He is a life member of both the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association. Currently he holds a General License with the APA and both Bantam chicken and Bantam Duck licenses with the ABA. He had the honor to judge National and regional shows throughout the USA and Canada and most recently given a judging appointment for 2017 in Mexico. A few shows that are at the top of his list for honors to judge have been the 2014 Masters Cup in Iowa and the 2011 Crossroads of America Poultry show that hosted the joint APA/ABA National Meet. He has also been fortunate enough to judge many breed Nationals including the Roscomb Bantam National in Shelbyville Kentucky and the Western Cornish National in California. He always enjoys traveling to Poultry shows and getting to place the exhibits. Dog Judge: We are happy to have Justine Espinoza as our dog judge this year. She is a Rohnert Park resident who has a long history with dogs starting with Basset Hounds and moving to Wirehaired Dachshunds.

Vine pruning contest results to be announced May 27 n January 30 the HFFCF held the annual Vine Pruning Contest. There were eight contestants. Two from the Healdsburg chapter of the F.F.A. and six from our local 4H clubs. Each student demonstrated their ability and knowledge on how to prune cane and cordon trained grapevines precisely, and in a timely manner. Every student did extremely well. Especially considering that for some, this was their first attempt at vine pruning.

Scholarships are a large part of the fair’s impact on youth ne of our greatest rewards as board members is our ability to reward the hard working 4-H and FFA members by awarding scholarship monies. Each year the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair board awards scholarships to graduating seniors who are either attending a trade school or going on to a 4 year university. Scholarships are also awarded to second year
O
returning recipients. It is really rewarding for us as a board to give these monies out and help offset some of their college costs. In many cases this can be the difference between some kids being able to continue their education or not. In many cases we track the students through college and see them annually at the fair. Bringing it full circle, some of our past scholarship recipients are now board members
themselves. Each year we are amazed at the talented students that apply for the scholarships. Seeing what they have accomplished through high school is truly amazing. We know that these individuals will continue to be successful in life. This year we will be awarding scholarships to 11 individuals. — The fair board

the first exhibitors at our small town fair, it is something that I hold very near and dear to my heart. My time in 4-H and FFA has taught me many different life skills and allowed me to gain passion for the agriculture industry, as well as servant leadership. Because of this, I have decided to pursue a degree in Agriculture Education at CSU Chico beginning in the fall. My biggest hope is that someday I can come back to Healdsburg and become a Fair Board member, as well as an Advisor, and give back to the organizations that gave so much to me. Trevor Lorence: I am a 17 year old Junior at Windsor High School. This is my eighth year in the Healdsburg 4-H club and my eighth year showing at the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. Currently I am the President for the Healdsburg 4-H club and was the president last year and held the position of Treasurer for two years. For the first three years of my 4-H career, I raised market poultry and for the past four years I raised market lambs — they project my dad took to this fair growing up. I also have done many projects with 4-H and through this fair including vine pruning, leathercraft, welding, archery and recycled art. I have enjoyed every year of 4-H, always trying to learn more and help the younger members around me. 4-H is a great opportunity for anyone to learn how to raise animals or cre-
ate something with the help and support of the entire community. In my free time and over my school vacation, I enjoy going on rock crawling trips in my Jeep and going kneeboarding on the lake with my family. Every summer my parents and I spend a week near a lake to go kneeboarding, wakeboarding and skiing, and a week up in the mountains fishing and rock crawling. Having this fair and 4-H has influenced my life in more ways than I could have imagined. It has given me the drive to take the classes I am at school and the courage to pursue a career in engineering. This is a community that I would not give up for anything. Zoe Fish-O’Brien: I am a senior at Healdsburg High School and this is my second year on the Junior Fair board. I have been raising market lambs for Healdsburg Fair for four years. I have also been involved in FFA for four years. This is my last year in FFA raising lambs for our local fair, I just committed to UC Davis. After high school I plan to get a degree in Agriculture at UC Davis. I have also been riding horses since I was 9. I compete at three day events with my off the track thoroughbred. I plan to bring my horse to college with me as well, in order to continue competing. This is a sentimental year for me, but I am glad that I get to spend my last fair as a member of the Junior Fair board.
We are proud supporters of the HFFCF, serving on its board and as a buyer since 1950.

Once again, your friends and neighbors graciously and continuously provide wines, goods, and services for you to bid on as part of the auction. Additionally, the crew on the Board of Directors assemble several “packages” of goods and services to be put together as a live auction. If that is not enough, come enjoy our own little and local “Dancing with the Stars” contest, as the finest fancy feet, (... and some not so fancy), this side of the Carolinas, kick up their heals to a whopping assortment of country tunes. (Special guest musicians to be announced). The annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair “Barn Dance and Harvest Party” is our one fund raising event for the year. All proceeds from ticket sales and the auction go for the support of the Healdsburg Fair and our sponsored local youth programs.
Each year we also give out thousands of dollars for college scholarships and continuing education. We support current students just setting out in life, and help past students gain the “sheepskin” and work experience as they focus on their own long term goals and professional lives. We are so fortunate that many of these young people who have performed and competed in the fair have come back and now are serving and contributing as Board members, 4-H Community Leaders, and FFA Boosters. Thanks folks! The Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair has been a civic keystone to Healdsburg since 1950. The Fair was “Norman Rockwell” before there was a Norman Rockwell (that may be a bit much, but you get the point). So, we will see you this May 25 at the Parade, Friday the 26th at the Livestock Shows, and the 27th at the Livestock Auction. And then, “Save the Date” for this Fall, November 4, for the wildest “HoDown” this side of Rio at the Healdsburg Fair’s own “Barn Dance and Harvest Party!”

We salute the things that small town living brings, like the Future Farmers Country Fair, as these are the things that bind us as a community. Equally important, is the community’s health and that’s where the Healthcare Foundation steps in. The Healthcare Foundation is the only funder focusing exclusively on health for those who live and work in northern Sonoma County. Our three focus areas: health access, mental health and early childhood development. Please support our biggest fundraiser of the year: Wine Women & Shoes.
Don’t miss this high energy event with 450 well-heeled women. Live local. Give local!

Annual buyer’s dinner a tasty pre-auction tradition he Healdsburg Future Farmers’ Country Fair will be here before you know it! The last night of the fair, Saturday, May 27, 2017, between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. the fair board will host the annual buyers’ dinner. The dinner is held to express our appreciation to the businesses and individuals who have shown support to the local FFA and 4-H groups by attending and investing in the future of the exhibitor. John and Kim Lloyd of Big John’s Market have graciously offered to donate the supplies needed to put on such an affair again this year, and K. King Catering, Kathy King and her crew, have offered their time and service in preparing the dinner. This dinner, let alone this fair, would not be the success it has been over the years without the support of businesses, individuals, and volunteers, and for that we thank you all. Come join the fun, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy a great meal! For more information regarding the auction and this year’s dinner, fair board members will be on hand at the Healdsburg Recreation Park starting Wednesday, May 24, 2017.
