County’s longest running sidewalk sale returns for 58th year Main Street’s business lineup has seen wholesale changes since 1961 By Rollie Atkinson Sonoma West Sta It’s not surprising that none of the stores that lined Sebastopol’s Main Street in 1961 are still in business, but the Sidewalk Sale event ďŹ rst held that year has continued for 58 years and enjoyed one of its best years ever last July after being rechristened as the “Sebastopol Sidewalk Faire.â€? This year’s event takes place July 19-21. The ďŹ rst sidewalk sale was the brainchild of Jack Clark, manager of Stan’s Men’s Store on Main Street. (Clark later became the owner and renamed the store.) Clark was assisted by Bea Roberts, owner of Bea’s Dress Shop (150 N. Main St.) and Jack Robinson, owner of Shutterbug Camera Shop, now located in south Santa Rosa. Downtown Sebastopol in 1961 still had train tracks down the center of Main Street and the central block of town had two ďŹ ve-and-dime stores with pharmacies and soda fountain lunch counters. There also was a Western Auto Store and a Western Union oďŹƒce. There was a gas station on almost every corner except the main intersection of Main and Bodega Avenue. In all, 21 businesses participated in the ďŹ rst Sebastopol Sidewalk Carnival Sale, now the longest running sidewalk sale in Sonoma
County. OďŹƒcially, the sale was organized by the Sebastopol Merchants Association, now named the Sebastopol Downtown Association, led by president Rei Bleiser. Some of the participating stores in the1961 inaugural sale were Starr Furniture, Mode O’Day, Carlson’s Department Store, PozziWinsby Jewelry, Turley’s Bakery, Busy Bee Shoe repair, Tomei’s Housewares & Sporting Goods and Rayburn’s Market & Deli. At Lee Peel’s barber shop, he hosted the local Boy Scout troop which sold hot dogs during the sale. Familiar Sebastopol names from the past era included pharmacists Pete Hill Sr. and Joe Brazill. (At one time Sebastopol had seven pharmacies.) Vince Enrico owned his shoe repair shop at 172 N. Main St., and George Lash had a shoe store in the next block of Main. In 1961, the former location of Fleming Foods, Sebastopol’s largest downtown grocery store had just closed and the building now occupied by CopperďŹ eld Books was vacant. (CopperďŹ eld’s opened in 1981.) A small Safeway store was located on the east side of Main, just north of McKinley. Later Safeway moved to the present site of Rite Aid, before building its current location. This year’s Sebastopol Sidewalk Faire will include live music, guest street vendors and a Friday evening swing dance at the Dhyana Center ($10 admission.)
