Network of children Where they do go

G1: 13 year-old, 1 student He plays soccer at the school with his school friend. He said, “There is no other place or some kind of activities to play but this.” He is not going to the ‘ma-eul-sal-ee’ (which means ‘living in the town’) program. G2: 9 year-old, 3 students They usually play at Dalmazi Chidren’s Park, some places near the Han river, or Shin-dong-a apartment’s play ground. They went to ‘ma-eulsal-ee’ several times. They said that there are some interesting programs, including slap-match competition, and some board games. They always go to the Dalmazi Park every Wednesday in the program of ‘ma-eul-sal-ee’. Some times Grandmothers of these children come to the park to pick up their kids, and some of them have some foods together like pizza provided by the ‘ma-eul-sal-ee’ program. The program is consisted with about 20-30 children. G3: 8 year-old, 1 student His mom said that her son never go out to play. She said he always play at his home only. There’s no place to play for children near this area. His mom knew the existence of programs of ‘ma-eulsal-ee’, but she didn’t send his son yet. G4: 11 year-old, 2 students They (one boy and one girl) usually play with their school friends, and they used to go Dalmazi Children’s Park, Shin-dong-a apartment and Rivervill Apartment’s play ground. They play some games like city escape, hide-and-seek and swings sometimes. They do NOT go ‘ma-eul-sal-ee’ program, but they have been heard about that program, and actually their frieds are going there now. G5: 10 year-old, 1 student He is too busy to play because of private educational institute. However, when he went to Dalmazi Park with his friends, some older boys (looked like higher grade of elementary or middle school students) blocked them from the slides or every other rides. He doesn’t know about the ‘maeul-sal-ee.’ **All students were from bogwang elemetary school

*Summing up There are an network and some effects from the Bogwang Ma-eul-sal-ee program, but many peolple still do NOT know about the existence of the program. They (the ‘Ma-eul-sal-ee’) need some complementary measures, especially, ‘spaces.’

Ground floor

We tried to plan some kind of comfortable place for old men and women, and also the children. Originally the site has a stair that the old ladies can sit and talk, and rest. Because of its character, in this case the stairs, we also tried to use that ideal concept of the model, which is stairs. We defined that the stairs have a ‘directional nature.’ We decided to use that nature. If you sit at stairs, your perspective is restricted to the front direction only. We think that we can induce the people who sitting at the stairs to certain direction or places. So we designed the place as a combination of stairs and some kind of classes from

Bogwang Ma-eul-sal-ee. Even though the Bogwang Ma-eul-sal-ee has pretty much of interesting programs and plans, they still can’t make good relationship with the local old people. That’s why we decided to design some place with programs that can induce the old people to contact with the Ma-eul-sal-ee program. We design two stairs, one stair directed to outside and another one to inside. People who sit at the stairs which facing to the building’s inside, naturally encouraged to have some interest to the inside space. And we’re expecting this interest to cause a start of the relationship or intimacy between senior people and youngers, children.
