Water Cube in Transition For 2020 Beijin Winter Olympic Game, the south square of Water Cube will be reconstructed and transformed into a outdoor ice skating arena. Water Cube is on the verge of transition. The functions and activities in Water Cube are gradually increasing and extending. The public are strating to get more involeved with activities in Water Cube. We believe that Water Cube has the potential to transfrom into a multifuctional center in future. And the function won’t be limited by its scale and its boudary.

ISSUES AND OPPURTUNITIES Existing condition
The Broken Bubbles Bubble is a quite unstable and temporary element. One obvious issue from the direct observation of the condition of water cube is the broken bubbles. Some of the bubbles are broken and the air inside of the bubbles are breaking out from the leakage. The leakage of bubbles happen due to many different reasons, such as human behaviour, natural environment and the quality of the membrane itself. So, What should we do about the broken bubbles? Fix it? Replace it? or Reconstruct it?

Will Venue still exist in 2108?
Will the connotation of venue still exist after 100 years ? We believe that in 2108, the bubble wall will explode and Water Cube will gradually merge with the nature and surrounding u developed into a mega structure, of which the definition is unclear. Will water cube still be a venue? Or will it be something else? Will venue still exist? Will the definition of venue still make sense 100 years later?

Time Line: According to the question we post, our story beigins with this time line. In the story, we test the time value of Water Cube and the transition from past to future. what happened in the past: The Water Cube was designed as an aquatic center for 2008 Beijing Olympic Game. In past few years, it was used as venue of great sporting events and many other international conference such as APEC conference in 2014. What is happening now: As time goes, the fragile structure of bubbles on the facade of Water cube will gradually explode due to many different reasons such as human behaviour, natural environment and other impact. The boundary between inside and outside starts to vanish. The parametric facade starts to grow in and grow out into new structures. 2020 Beijin winter Olympic is the turnning point. With the function of skating arena extending out into the southern square and the broken bubbles, the Water Cube achieve its first step transition into a new system connected will outisde environment. What will happen? We believe that in 2108, the bubble wall will eventually vanish and Water Cube will gradually merge with the nature and surrounding urban features and develop into a mega structure. Our design will have a conversation with future and question the connotaiton of venue in a future context. Also our idea is to test the limit of a traditional concept, the venue, and looking for a new meaning of Water Cube, perhaps not only Water Cube, but also other stadiums and venues built for big sport events. How they gonna live after 100 years. Will venue and stadium still exist? And What is the new meaning and purpose of Water Cube after 100 years?

2022 The plan shows reallocation of function in 2022. With the growing of cells and decaying of bubbles, square boundary of Water Cube start to demolish. The previous swimming pool will be tranformed into Curling Field for 2022 Beijin Winter Olympic. The outdoor Ice Skating Rink will connect with the inside and provide a skating space for public.
