Campus Planning and Architecture / Graduate Exhibit - Undergraduate 2016

Pattern study is to explore certain repetition occurs in the consequences of natural activity. We can easily find them everywhere yet, we haven’t realized. Through this project I tried to give my own find definition to pattern I chose, and to interact between the material that to show pattern’s identity. When observing the natural world, it is not uncommon to notice certain rhythms or patterns of design. Some of these patterns can be as simple as repetition while other configurations can be much more complex, like geometric symmetry. In wood, a knot is a particular type of imperfection. It may be a flaw, indicating the location in the trunk where a branch died, but it is a peculiar flaw that causes (or allows) the rest of the grain to grow around it. Gnarled tree has both regular and irregular lines in the section. I put this pattern as the knot, deviation interferes into the rhythmic tree rings. Knot works as the factor to make uniformed pattern to release itself and discipline fades in at the moment.

Drawings for searching and examining the pattern in lines

Knot in the wood has the repetition system of evasion and attraction based on the knot. Straight lines in the tree gets curve, dodging the knot and after passing it those line are drew to each other. In the 10*10*10 cube, the main abstract

idea fit. I chose to set the straight lines as default mass in this study and curve transformation as void. Extrusion of each sides makes different void in the core of the cube.

Original planning of the campus

Excursion pattern adapted in the planning

Adapting pattern study from 3D cube back to 2D planning can help campus of Konkuk University organized in both 2-dimensional plan and 3-dimensional contour arrangement. In the original planning of the campus, all buildings are structured in the departments ; hospital, administration, archive, science department etc. each departments has different axes respectively. The “Knot in the Wood is a concept that emulates this natural

occurrence in wood and serves to redirect the flow of traffic on campus at Konkuk University. As the pattern is to adopted to the planning, every departments will be applied to a ring which refers to be a knot in the wood. The original axes will be prolonged and operate as the straight line in the wood. As the setting, evasion will occur and attraction will fade when the lengthened line meets the ring .

The concept of garden museum is for both academic study and cultural experiences. The museum would serve current students, prospective artists as well as alumni artists, providing a space to highlight their talents and elevate their professional value through exhibitions and galleries. Exported parking lots and reduced approach from inside of the campus by car. Also, enlarged field and park will give students to emphasize importance of exercises. These areas help students of Konkuk University to flourish memories and important for their activities. People will let

go of ordinary customs, academic stress and regulation in the campus eventually become liberal and artistic frontier as philosophy of Konkuk university. Through the “Knot in the Wood, I wish to emphasize the terrain of the museum site and surrounding movements. The shape of the traffic flow is directed by the same principles of actual knots in wood by grouping department buildings together. Most of the campus is situated on flatlands but the museum site is on one of the main hills.

Form to Architecture / The Cooper Union - Summer 2014

Form to Architecture starts from the study of basic figures, such as sphere, torus, cylinder, cube, pyramid and cone; by amplifying the proves of mass study involving drawing the characteristics from each selected figure and applying it to the architecture at the introduction of architecture a the Copper Union. Efforts were made into finding a creative connection between basic figures and architecture through the Cooper Union located in the center of New York, a city of diversity and inspiration. I have chosen a sphere, which a perfectly round geometrical object in three-dimensional space that is the surface of a completely round ball or the set of points that are all at the same distance from a given point in three-dimensional space. By extension, I have used the points that are all at the same distance from the center, the lines that connect such points and the surfaces that can be structured from such lines form a new space. A sphere can be form by the combination of circles of various sizes or series of cones. However, it was also possible to use the irregular and unexpected surfaces and lines derived from a bundle of cotton clothes. And as a result, disparate areas have come into being.

Pavilion at Seonyudo Park / UAUS Competition - Spring 2016

This world that we live in is full of wastes. Even at this very moment, everything that we can have is being thrown away. Architecture is no exception to that, for it is too easily wasted. Buildings are neglected after a prescribed life-span, and abandoned buildings become monstrosities in cities. Why is this happening? The answer is very simple. Yet, ‘Abandonment’ is a straightforward activity whilst ‘regeneration’ is not. What do you think about Sunyu Island? An area that was in charge of the city’s core functions in the old days, returned to its citizens as an Ecology Park after going through the process of regeneration when it no longer needed to serve those functions. Regeneration may be an area of certain specific professionals, including architects. And what many people see is the contrast between ‘Abandonment’ and ‘Regeneration’, but not the process in between them. Frequently the process is regarded as an affair of somebody else. The pavilion ‘Breaking the prejudice’ is placed in the middle of these two. It attempts to break the prejudice or the misunderstanding that ‘Regeneration’ is difficult. Through deconstruction of a signboard, which represents identity of a building, by simply pulling the strings, makes the audience to witness the straightforward process of ‘Regeneration’. The signboard that might have appeared useless is reborn to something that can provide a meaningful experience by disassembling itself.

Seonyu island park, where UAUS took place, is one of the islands situated on Han River. The park used to be a filtration plant, but was converted into an ecological park. The park utilizes the previous filtration plant to a great extent. It contains four different parks and many walking trails including Seoul Design Gallery, and a botanical garden. Revival Process

House of Artists / Graduate Studio - Fall 2016

The house of Magritte and Rousse is a space where the artists of different styles co-inhibit, where they co-exist, and where their arts co-exist. Rene Magritte an internationally acclaimed surrealist artist, who gives new meanings to objects, by rendering meaningful objects meaningless or instilling significance to meaningless objects. He gives illusionistic, dreamlike quality to his surreal painting, by depicting usual objects in an extraordinary context. George Rousse, on the other hand, is a French photographer and artist. He uses his frame of camera in his art to transform the three-dimensional places into a flat photography by optical illusions. Confined in his photo frames, any cubic effects and depth are ignored and the general perceptions of space are redefined from the viewpoint. Magritte and Rousse are by and large, have completely different ways in which they express themselves, i.e. Magritte creates three-dimensions with the paintings whereas Rousse seeks to remove the three-dimensional elements, illusion is the common tool they use in their arts.

In the painting of ‘Le Blanc Seing’ , Magritte give misunderstanding by mixing the depth order of trees and the woman riding horse. From the painting, combination of vertical tree line series, horizontal depth of them and the woman makes illusion of 3-dimensional effect on the flat painting.

René Magritte and Georges Rouse made illusions between 2D and 3D.

Although, the way of diffusion which Rouse gave was rather excluding the depth of a certain area of his selection at a point of view to two dimensional space. By flattening the three dimensional space to a drawing-like space, he gives new meaning of utopic area.

Projection of G. Rousse has injected to the mass of R. Magritte. From the projection, the house which was fully Magritte’s, though Rousse’s and common area has been made. In the newly occurred space, every orders are aligned toward the point where the projection starts, yet Magritte’s rooms are still in vertical order as the mass stays.

As the contrast of these two person, Magritte has its openings to perpendicular axis of the inner order, on its contrary Rousse has them from front to back, from the side where the projection starts to where it heads.

Cultural Complex; UP Town / Studio 4 - Fall 2015

Retail +a _ Seongsu-dong has a very unique character. It has its own developed industrial zone of its own, ranging from retailers, car repair shops, leather factories, workshops to handmade shoe-stores and many more. The district has come to the public’s attention for being trendy but in reality, it is not as popular as expected. It is packed its own shops, but it is yet to be ranked as a top to-go place for people to hand around. To achieve that, it would need alternatives to attract more people to visit the area; the alpha. I chose the alpha as a ‘public space’. In this project, my focus was put on the common area as a key to overcome the issue of the district, which is that Sengsu-dong is still in development mode. A variety of boutiques and outlets will help the area secure its position as a must-go destination for shoppers, whilst the common area allows them to relax and communicate with each other.

Location

320-1 Seongsu-dong, Seoongdong-gu, Seoul, S. Korea

Dimension

There is circulating route to go up to upper stairs and sky garden. Public program and retail along slope helps easy approach. Many studios are spread through the complex.

Recently, Seong- su is labelled by the local press as “Seoul’s Brooklyn” or “Williamsburg on the Hangang,” Seongsu-dong is an intriguing cultural ecosystem of trendy galleries and jazzy cafés hidden amid the redbrick and stained gray edifices of old warehouses and factories; the bustle of its streets and the drone of industrial machinery are punctuated at regular intervals by the rumble of the subway as it passes on the elevated railway above.

Redesigning Site Planning / Studio 1 - Fall 2013

Project of re-designing the main gate of Konkuk University. This is the drawing and model for my proposal. I started with understanding surrounding landscape in this site where the gate distinguishes between college town and the university campus. The project was focused on the point that the site has the most green areas among Konkuk university. The Konkuk Gate that was newly designed resembles simplified bushes, trees and their shadows. Magnified gate makes people to be pygmies and trapped in bushes and rest in green. The bold division from outside to inside the campus makes students to cross the border without perception.
