Restructuring study for the reuse of the old oil mill in Elefsina into a business cooperation center

Type Diploma thesis project - Solo project

General Area 7,200 sq.m. Academic score

3,222 sq.m. Area of Building units 10/10

This project introduces the reuse of the old oil mill of Elefsina into a business cooperation center (Coworking Space).

In the post-industrial era we first have deindustrialisation, ie a reduction of industry and secondly there is an increase in demand for services. For this reason, many new companies are created that offer services, including start-ups. The study area, Elefsina, is a typical case of a deindustrialized city. It used to be the center of many businesses that later closed. Under these circumstances, the creation of a coworking space would encourage the new economy and the creation of start-ups which will contribute to the prosperity and economy of the region.

Respecticting the hystorical building, simple materials were combined with the load-bearing stonework for the creation of this area.

Furthermore, all the placed indoor plants are chosen specifically for them to thrive in enviroments with no direct light such as this one.

In order to complement the old building with contemporary materials, the roof tiles and the wooden beams of the roof have been kept while some of the tiles have been replaced with glass ones for the effective lighting of the space.

For the effective access to the amphitheater stage by people with mobility limitations, an additional door has been created in the area of the open plan offices.

In this area the beams have been kept exactly as they were in their current condition so that they can be used as a grid in order to create lofts that the administrator offices will be “placed” on. The lofts create a game of different levels characterized by transparency and plenty of natural light.

Despite the additions, the buildings have an authentic historical industrial character such as the ruins, the mixing of stone structures, concrete, wooden trusses and metal windows, which I tried to preserve and to highlight. Here, skylights in the shape of pyramids have been incorporated in order to prevent the direct sun light to penetrate the room but instead create a functional art workshop.

The focus of the project is the creation of a hotel facility that will be addressed mainly to the scientific community and more specifically to students and specialists in the field of fauna and flora since such industries have closed and continue to a lesser extent in this area. It is a summer destination that will allow the user to combine work, learning and rest.

The main idea was based on the shape and structure of the tree leaves. We implemented it by capturing it in our design externally through paths that connect the spaces of the installation and the placement of two greenhouses. Later we expanded internally.

VIOKEF

VIOKEF is the biggest manufacturer of lighting units and decorative glass in Greece. Its reputation has forged an uphill progression, producing an extensive range of interior and exterior lighting solutions for home and professional use, crafted by experienced professionals (https://viokef.com/en/home/).

04CEILING LIGHTING PROPOSAL

As I am currently working at viokef as a designer, one of the things I am executing is creating custom made proposals based on different needs.

Through combining 60 tube lights, I created two modern chandeliers ( each chandelier has 30 tubes ) for a double height living room space.

3D MODELING OF LIGHTS

Another role am responsible for is recreating viokef’s lights into 3d models in order to use them for interior proposals.

Being one of the leading designers in the lighting company I am working in, in this project I created these blueprints of 6 swimming pools using Autocad. Afterwards I recommended the best places for outdoor ligths to be placed. Subsequently, these blueprints were used by contractors to book the project.

PAINTINGS & ART COMMISSIONS

This is an oil painting of my grandpa. Making this portrait, my foremost goal was to capture his expression which represents a mix of happiness and tiredness due to reaching 100 years.

This is a mixed media painting ( oils and golden leaves ) I created for an Airbnb apartment located in the heart of Athens. It is 2.5 X 1.5 big and it is placed in the living room space.

The request was to make an abstract painting that could interact with the textures and the general style of the space using colors such as grey, blue and gold.

This is one of my accepted artworks in an art gallery in Athens. My idea was to create a painting that shows the fear and anxiety of a person who is about to enter adulthood. For this exact reason, I have merely made the eyes entirely realisticaly in order to capture the expresion of the girl. The melted roses define the end of youthfulness.
