Foreword Stuart Bartholomew Principal and Vice-Chancellor Arts University Bournemouth

The 2012 MAP exhibition is the second of three which have now taken place. It was one of the formative exhibitions which established a relationship with Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts which continued into 2013 and will continue in the years ahead. The shared brief of Music Architecture Poole (MAP) brings together the work of a whole year of the BA(Hons) Architecture at the Arts University. Whilst there is individual expression and examples of different methods of communicating architectural propositions the impressive quality of the exhibition is this overall coherency of student work and the complementarity of the ideas expressed. It is an exhibition truly greater than the sum of its parts. Sophie Clarke is to be commended on the curatorial role which she has fulfilled. Whilst MAP has a narrative of its own she has enhanced this through the selection, grouping and display of the exhibition. This has made the work accessible to viewers without diminishing the quality and impact of individual exhibits.

The BA (Hons) Architecture forms part of the offer of a specialist University of Art, Design, Media and Performance. The course lives in a creative environment in which the connections between diverse creative disciplines are easily forged. So too with MAP which promotes an ongoing dialogue about spaces, sounds, structures and places.

MAP Context Channa Vithana, Senior Lecturer BA (Hons) Architecture Arts University Bournemouth

Music Architecture Poole [MAP] is part of a body of research. It is based within acoustics and architecture. It combines architectural discovery through the design of acoustic spaces, small and large, interior and urban, involving active engagement with highly specialised locally based industry and engineers. Instead of involving students in design projects that are separated by many miles, sometimes countries and even continents, from where they study, the local is as extraordinary and exciting as sites in seemingly more exotic or glamorous locations. The resultant work, located in Poole is imaginatively realised, allowing architecture to emerge in unlikely possibilities of creativity by actively engaging in local contexts. Within this canvas, MAP allows the skilled exposition of Level 5 (second year) student work to the general public and industry professionals alike. However, it is to also be taken seriously as a professional exhibition

of curated work. As the curator of MAP it is always challenging through constant experimentation but also very inspiring to work with highly motivated students who take time away from holiday periods between their studies to develop and work on a project that deals with the unpredictability of a live project. MAP is an architectural exhibition and therefore it displays materials, technical drawings, images and research. MAP as an exhibition literally comes out of the walls, creates shadowplay and provokes thought into what could be.
