ROTTERDAM INSTITUTE OF ARTS TU Delft | individual project | 2016 | duration 9 weeks | academic first prize
A scenario states that the Dutch Institute of Architecture in Rotterdam completely burnt down and has to be rebuilt. My design for this new building redefines the enormous empty plain by involving the public space and the people. It takes the future realisation of MVRDV’s bowl shaped mirror-building into account.

ARTIST RESIDENCE TU Delft | individual project | 2012 | duration 9 weeks
An artist-residence and its garden. A private, detached villa including an atelier. The house shows referance to the surrounding architecture in The Hague. The garden functions as part of an exposition route in the neighborhood.
16
As a source of inspiration, nature could have a major role in the life of an artist. The open design draws the green suroundings of the villa in the daily life of the artist and it’s family. The villa, located in Scheveningen, also shows great referance to the surrounding architecture.

AMSTERDAM GREEN LIFE TU Delft | individual project | 2015 | duration 9 weeks | academic first prize
The transformation of an existing residential block in Amsterdam. My plan combines the original concept of light, air and space (1940’s) with the needs of the future. I think an important disadvantage of ‘air and space’ is the distance it creates between people. This plan is about connecting people and spaces and overcome divisions within the city as well as society.

CONNECTION OF FUNCTIONS
Residents have the opportunity to choose their preferred facade module. This personal touch entails greater satisfaction concerning the final form of their house, but also a feeling of involvement and responsibility for the entire building.

BERLIN SPOTLIGHT TU Delft - GRAFT architects | individual project | 2017 | duration 18 weeks
While walls are built in various places worldwide, Berlin is still unbuilding the wall that fell 28 years ago. As one out of eight utopic masterplans along the former wall, my project deals with the scars that are left in Berlin’s government district. The center of the plan is a stage for the free word. While the rest of the masterplan is designed to bring people to the now often deserted area. One of the builings will facilitate free speech with its programme and has a view on the stage, the Reichstag and the Band des Bundes.

DIRECTING
The shape of the building follows from (and works with) the surrounding public space. In the building, people meet and are able to discuss and comment on developments in society. The three monolitic shells create a safe space for people to express themselves, while directing the attention of its visitors towards the public stage. The Reichstag and the Band des Bundes form its permanent policital background.

became one of the largest industrial and financial centers in Europe. With growth came ambition. Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted the city to be the most beautiful in the world and started building monuments, avenues, grand buildings, fountains and statues. The historic styles suited his ambition, resulting in many eclectic, neo-romanesque, neobaroque and neo-renaissance landmarks. In 1871 the Reichstag building was constructed in eclectic style, to 19

VLAARDINGEN CITY ROUTE TU Delft | group project (3p) | 2014 | duration 9 weeks | academic first prize
A strategy to transform a deprecaded part of Vlaardingen. The historical features of the area are used to cluster and complement the existing functions. The plan creates a pleasant alternative route from the station to the city center and a pleasant environment for both residents and visitors.

Scattered buildings are merged into residential blocks, based on the historical grid. Five spaces are left open, each with their own character. The route that crosses the area doesn’t only connect these spaces, but also forms a link between the train station and the city center.

The long track, that once belonged to the rope facory, is now a delapidated historical feature in Vlaardingen. By extending it with a collective greenhouse and a rose-arch it will become a social attraction along the route.

The five different areas are visually connected by their materialisation. The historical appearance of the area is reflected in all pavement and street furniture.

BAMBOO HOUSING PROJECT Bambú Social | interdisciplinary project (4p) | 2015 | duration 5 months
Bambú Social aims to improve the housing conditions in Nicaragua, by sharing knowledge about bamboo as a construction material. The goal of our project was to design good, affordable and easy-to-build bamboo housing. Click here for my video summary

I mainly focussed on the needs and wishes of the local families and incorporated the results of my research to the design of a social house. While visiting people in their homes, I asked them to draw and explain their current living situation and their dream house. The high indoor temperature and lack of privacy turnt out to be the main issues, apart from their economic status and lack of trust towards financial institutions.
43
The main characteristics of the new design are its modularity, its flexibility and its ability for prefabrication. Because we believe that a social house should be accessible to the poorest, while adaptable to the needs and wishes of the entire target group.
