in love with the movies and went at every opportunity. At the age of 22, he landed a job at the Manhattan Beach Video Archives, a now defunct video rental store in Manhattan Beach, California where he and fellow movie buffs like Roger Avary spent all day watching, discussing and recommending films to customers. In the early 1990s, he began his career as an independent filmmaker with the release of Reservoir Dogs in 1992, now regarded as a cult classic, and the beginning of many successful and widely regarded films of our generation.

What do we mean by Tarantino style ? H

is films have been characterized by nonlinear storylines, which is probably inspired by the New

Wave (French: La Nouvelle Vague) which is a blanket term coined by critics for a group of French filmmakers of the late 1950s and 1960s. Filming techniques included fragmented, discontinuous editing, and long takes. The combination of objective realism, subjective realism, and authorial commentary created a narrative ambiguity in the sense that questions that arise in a film are not answered in the end. He is also noted for including satirical subject matter, and an aestheticization/glorification of violence that often results in the exhibition of neo-noir characteristics within his films. Of course he has many other director trademarks that i'll be featuring later on in this book

First things first, the connections will be easier to understand once you know that QT has seperate Universes for his films, they are as follows... Jackie Brown which apparently doesn’t meet any of these criteria and is in it’s own universe called the Elmore Leonard Universe. It seems this is set in its own universe because it was an adaptation of someone else’s work, therefore it is set in its own universe. Reservoir Dogs True Romance Pulp Fiction Death Proof Inglorious Basterds Django Unchained Are all a part of the Realer than Real Universe While... Natural Born Killers From Dusk 'Till Dawn Kill Bill 1&2 Are all a part of the Movie Movie Universe

Another notable aspect of Tarantino’s movies is the extreme violence. I myself have always wondered why the cops rarely come after most of the characters. Why isn’t Beatrix Kiddo penalised for slaying many people quite publicly? Acoording to many Tarantino fans and from interviews with the man himself, It becomes clear that due to Inglorious Basterds, QT’s movie world changed. They live in a world where WW2 did not end with an under siege Hitler dying in a Berlin bunker. They live in a world where Hitler was machine-gunned to death in a Parisian cinema-come-incinerator. Due to this monumental change in modern history, a softening in people’s attitudes toward ultra-violence has also occurred, and, a shift in the way people view popular culture has also transpired. Since 1944 the characters of this world have been brought up in the knowledge that the entire Nazi hierarchy was taken out in one act of extreme violence, and has in turn, slightly desensitised the way they view violence. Mr Blonde casually carving the ear off a police officer in Reservoir Dogs, and Jules & Vincent’s reasonably casual reaction to blowing off Marvin’s face in Pulp Fiction are classic examples. The fact that the most significant moment in modern history now took place in a movie theatre also provides an explanation as to why everyone is so obsessed with popular culture and movies. The movie theatre itself has become one of the most significant locations in modern history and has become the basis for a far greater importance being bestowed upon the world of movies, music and comic books.

I'm a big collector of vinyl - I have a record room in my house - and I've always had a huge soundtrack album collection. So what I do, as I'm writing a movie, is go through all those songs, trying to find good songs for fights, or good pieces of music to layer into the film.

It can also be used to emphasize confusion as in DePalma's Blow Out (the scene when Jack's tapes are erased) and in QT's Jackie Brown where the camera spins around Jackie. This is actually a trick on the viewer because as we find out, Jackie plans out the entire caper and is merely acting confused

The Mexican Stand-Off A Mexican Stand-Off is when more than two opponents aim at each other with guns. It was originated in Sergio Leone’s classic 1966 spaghetti western The Good The Bad and The Ugly, which is one of QT’s favorite films. QT has used it for several of his own films.

There’s no doubt that feet seem to be a reaccuring theme within Tarantino’s films. Time and time again we see close up shots of feet. Bridget Fonda’s ringed toes propped up on the table in Jackie Brown. Kurt Russell gives Rosario Dawson’s feet a tongue ‘n’ tickle in Death Proof. Thurman’s paralysed toes dominate the screen in Kill Bill. Christoph Waltz ominously undresses Diane Kruger’s in Inglourious Basterds. And there’s QT himself, drinking fromSalma Hayek’s feet in From Dusk Till Dawn.

the camera is just past the shoulder, it doesn't mean I

have a shoulder fetish. You want to see feet? Watch The Virgin Suicides. There's a lot of feet in that movie."

In Pulp Fiction, the containments of a briefcase, which runs much of the plot, is never shown. There's an omnious glow which comes out of the briefcase that is so bright and beautiful that it disarms anyone who looks inside. This, of course, has sparked much speculation about the film. The most popular beliefs include:

In Reservoir Dogs, Mr. Orange (Tim Roth) has a poster of The Silver Surfer on his apartment wall. This is an homage to one of Tarantino’s favorite

Imitative Pastiche

Aaron Barlow in his book “Quentin Tarantino: Life at the Extremes” claims that there are mainly two different types of references to other films, pastiche and decoupage. Pastiche freely imitates another work of art; in its depiction it may be bordering on satire, sometime even lacking in the humor department. In fact, pastiche can also be interpreted as a lack of imagination, a failure to come up with new ideas, and hence choosing what another person has done out of laziness or merely because it looks “cool” with no other purpose at hand.

V

Creative Decoupage

However, decoupage involves more skill, hindsight and purpose. It is a way of organically and creatively incorporating and weaving another person's work and even saying and creating something new through the whole filtering process. Many artists and critics tend to complain that everything has been said and done, yet in decoupage the old is made anew through careful and skillful positioning of particular scenes of reference; these scenes then benefit and add to the work. Tarantino falls into this latter category since his references to cinema are not senseless or superficial; they build a body within his own work and are embedded into the history of cinema itself, in the similar way, French director Jean-Luc Godard approaches and deals with the medium of film. And let's face it, Tarantino has never pretended otherwise.

Here's a list of movie references that Tarantino appears to have used‌

Tarantino cast Pam Grier in the lead role and put Sid Haig in a cameo in order to invoke the feeling of Blaxploitation movies. Across 110th Street (1972, Barry Shear) - Bobby Womack's main theme for this film is used in the opening credits. Alligator (1980, Lewis Teague) - Max (Robert Forster) makes mention of a receding hairline problem, a reference to the running gag involving Madison (also Robert Forster) in Alligator.

JACKIE Coffy (1973, Jack Hill) - Excerpts of Roy Ayers' score from Coffy are heard multiple times throughout the film.

Detroit 9000 (1973, Arthur Marks) - Is one of the films Melanie watches on tv at Ordell's place.

Foxy Brown (1974, Jack Hill) - Pam Grier's character's name

is based on her character's name in this film. Jackie Brown can be seen as a Spiritual Successor to Foxy Brown.

Hard Eight (1996, Paul Thomas Anderson) - The scene in

which Jackie practices her aim with a gun while waiting for Ordell is taken from Hard Eight.

Mandingo (1975, Richard Fleischer) - Ordell mentions Mandingo during his first conversation with Max. New York Undercover - Ordell mentions 'New York Undercover' when he's telling Louis all about the guns he sells. Sharky's Machine (1981, Burt Reynolds) - "Street Life" from 'Sharky's Machine' can be heard when Jackie is driving to the final money pickup. Superchick (1973, Ed Forsyth) - The opening credit sequence of Jackie Brown mirrors the one in 'Superchick'; Jackie is even shown walking down the exact same colorful hallway.

Taxi Driver (1976, Martin Scorsese) - The scene where Louis (Robert De Niro) is shown myriad weapons by a gun dealer references the scene in Taxi Driver where Travis Bickle (also Robert De Niro) does the same. The American President (1995, Rob Reiner) - Is the film Max sees at the Del Amo mall before running into Jackie; poster visible outside the Del Amo mall theater. The Big Doll House (1971, Jack Hill) - The song "Long Time

BROWN Woman" performed by Pam Grier for this film, is heard during a similar scene in Jackie Brown; women being led and locked into a prison cell.

The Graduate (1967, Mike Nichols) - The opening shot of Pam Grier moving along an airport conveyor belt is a direct lift from the opening shot from this film.

The Killer (1989, John Woo) - At one point, Ordell laments that people have watched John Woo's The Killer too often,

resulting in many would-be criminals buying nine millimeter pistols when a different gun would be better suited.

The Mad Dog Killer (1977, Sergio Grieco) - Melanie is watching this on tv at one point; Ordell mistakes its star Helmut Berger for Rutger Hauser. Vampyros Lesbos (1971, Jesus Franco) - Score song "The Lion and the Cucumber" is taken from this Lesbian Vampire film. Wolf (1994, Mike Nichols) - A Wolf poster is visible outside the Del Amo mall theater.

During a sit-down interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy for Britain's Channel 4, Tarantino bristled when asked to explain his thoughts about whether movie violence can lead to real-life violence. "Don't ask me a question like that," Tarantino said. "I'm not biting. I refuse your question." After Guru-Murthy asked Tarantino why he refused to answer the question, the director explained in no uncertain terms what he thinks of his relationship with the media. "I'm not your slave and you're not my master," Tarantino sniped. "You can't make me dance to your tune. I'm not a monkey." Undeterred, Guru-Murthy pressed forward, trying to connect Tarantino with comments Jaime Foxx made about movie violence. "You should talk to Jamie Foxx about that. And I think he's actually here, so you can," Tarantino smirked, before brutally deconstructing the junket interview process. "I don't want [to answer that]. I'm here to sell my movie," Tarantino said. "This is a commercial for the movie. Make no mistake. [...] I don't want to talk about what you want to talk about. Tarantino loves popping up in his directed works as well as his friend and fellow director Robert Rodriguez’s films. Sometimes his performance is quite cringe worthy, (not always). But now it’s such a staple of his films, and i’d be pretty disapointed if he didn’t turn up.

Five guys sitting in a bullpen, San Quentin, wondering how the fuck they got there. "What did we do wrong?" "What should've we done?" "What didn't we do?" "Whatdabbada..." "It's your fault, my fault, his fault." All that bullshit. Finally someone's comes up with the idea-- "Wait a minute. While we were planning this caper, all we did was sit around and tell fucking jokes." Got the message? Fellas, I don't mean to holler at you. When this caper's over, and I'm sure it's going to be a successful one, hell we'll get down to Hawaii, and I'll roar and laugh with all of you. You'll find me a different character round here. Right now it's a matter of business. With the exception of Eddie and myself, whom you already know, we're going to be using aliases on this job. Under no circumstances do I want any one of you to relate to each other by your christian names, and I don't want any talk about yourself personally. That includes where you been, your wife's name, where you might've done time, or a bank maybe you robbed in St. Petersburg. All I want you guys to talk about if you have to, is what you're going to do. That should do it. Here are your names... Mr. Brown, Mr. White, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Blue, Mr. Orange, and Mr. Pink.
