Patterns Nature - A key inspiration to my practice. Update - currently I am expanding my nature illustrations into pattern design. I have begun developing pattern creations which directly reflect my woodland walks around the countryside. It’s really nice to begin to visually represent my experiences with nature and apply simple observational drawings to greater use such as pattern. Nature has such a desirable aesthetic that is in demand within the surface design industry, and I look forward to exploring the subject. it could become a relative part of my practice if refined well enough.
The Brief
In response to my nature exploration brief, I will design and create a series of patterns which will reflect my ongoing fascination with nature. I will curate a selection of designs to be applied to product mockups.

Nature sketchbook - being amongst nature I began to draw from observation - and reflected my interest and connection with nature into my practice. I felt very inspired and it really impacted the direction of extended practice for me.

In developing my interest in pattern, Andrea Lauren was a huge influence. - inspired by her intricate and colourful lino cuts. & her technical abilities! Her work inspired my progression into pattern exploration…

I became really invested in this series and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the process of pattern design. Although not an initially planned brief, the nature theme became a really important part of my practice, and i just let things develop organically.

The whole brief was a really unexpected success for me. I only intended to branch out into developing a couple of test pattern designs, but enjoyed the process and outcomes so much that I just has to continue. It’s been a real escape from some of the more stressful projects! and im very pleased with the outcomes.

I found compositional success when I discovered a new way of working (see research section) in illustrator. This method allowed me to create more seamless and therefore successful pattern designs. Sometimes i designed the pattern before hand - planning how the different elements would fit together, sometimes I planned this in digital process which worked equally as well! - i just enjoyed the process of playing around with composition.

One of my most successful visual qualities I have like to incorporate throughout - shadow behind the pattern to give depths and complexity.

I think the muted and earthy tones work well to portray the nature theme.
