Pattern Exploration
(personal brief) In response to my nature exploration brief, I will design and create a series of patterns which will reflect my ongoing fascination with nature. I will curate a selection of designs to be applied to product mockups.

Overall, I am really pleased with the final greek pattern. I wasn't sure that positioning each of the lino woman so randomly would work so well. Playing around with scale and mirroring each lino created more variation and diversity within the design. Like my previous pattern designs, the addition of a faded background brought more depth and balance to the final piece.
Summative Evaluation - Upon reflection of the year, I am really pleased to see the progression I have made within my practice. Throughout the extended practice module I've pushed a range of different skills and broadened my abilities across a many processes. Due to this exploration and dedication to Lino print in particular I feel that I have reached a real turning point in my work and gained some much needed confidence. Although I would have liked to achieve much more in terms of quantity, my Lino cutting skills have come on leaps and bounds which I feel has been my key achievement this year.
Initially I found the stricture of the module to be quite challenging. The self directed nature of the projects meant that it was difficult for me to focus down on specific briefs. I found that my initial research was jumping from one thing to another and i was trying to approach too much without actually making much progress. For me, I began to make real strides when I focused on my substantial brief ‘Woman Of Greek Mythology’. I proposed this with my approach to image making in mind. In the past my strengths had been when i have time to really dig my teeth into a module. The time scale I had given myself to complete this gave me the confidence to create Lino based outcomes.
Near the beginning of the module I made the decision that I wanted to prioritise Lino cut within my practice, but I didn't achieve as much as I would have liked. I regret that I didn't spend more time to create Lino focused pieces, when shorter less successful projects took time away from this development. Overall however, I am pleased with the Lino prints I have produced and feel that its the beginning of a strong portfolio of work.
This ‘Woman Of Greek Mythology’ series has been my most enjoyable and rewarding project of the year. The journey through the series has confirmed my passion for printing and has expanded upon my Lino skills greatly. Although previously I knew I had an interest in Lino this series helped me to refine my skills and hone in on specific processes and techniques. From this brief I believe I have created my most successful series of prints, which effectively depict my female characters in a fresh and exciting way.
Through journeying into the second half of the year, I had a lot of retaliations about my practice. I began to prioritise my interests and focus on making the work I wanted to create. At a certain point I considered designing a children’s book but felt that this just wouldn't be portraying the dark tone of voice i’d become so drawn to. I have broadened my interest in exploring the subject of mythology further within my practice, and realised that dark themes and ancient tales are where the focus of my narrative exploration should be at this moment in time. I just find the subject so inspiring and complimentary to the aesthetic style of my Lino work.
My Nature project was also another breakthrough for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity of this brief, - it was a nice change to simply draw in response to what I was seeing. To take a break from trying to convey complex visual metaphors. This series inspired my interest in pattern design which I am going to explore further in the near future, continuing to focus on my love of nature and lino.
Although I was disappointed at the lack of Lino that I had produced by the end, working on other briefs benefited my practice in some ways. It shows range and diversity in my portfolio of work, and demonstrates the ability to use other forms of media. I broadened my digital skills and improved and refined my drawing skills which. By the end of the year, I have the ability to create an aesthetic which carries a similar visual quality to my Lino designs. I have tried to combine my prints with hand drawn work in the past but its always felt too forced. The difference now is that my process developed more organically and the pieces are much more successful. Perhaps not as strong in my eyes but somewhat successful none the less. Together with my Lino, I have a coherent body of work. currently I feel very focused and sure about the direction of my practice, and I am excited to see what the future holds.
