The brief(rough)
 
 Illustrate a series images depicting the meaning of words from other languages which cannot be translated to our own. I aim to communicate this clearly through considerate and provoking illustrations.
✴ Interpreting
the phrase through an illustration of a bird murmuration. - a beautiful yet fleeting event in nature which i think sums up the phrase perfectly.
✴ illustrated hundreds of birds in find line ink.
Mono no aware (Japanese): an acute sensitivity to the transience of lovely things; a melancholy awareness that everything nice will fade combined with a rich enjoyment of this short-lived beauty.
✴ Houses
/ cityscape really working for the image. - like addition of mono print texture to create a faded affect - gives illusion of distance & depth.
✴ Don’t like texture in first image - too grainy and washy. - looks like pastels
✴ Colour
variations / compositional development - more successful proportions
• I’m not sure what prevented me from completing this series in all honesty. I think I kept it in the sidelines thinking it was an enjoyable and easy brief to return to, but when the workload started to pick up, it got push aside.
• Despite this, Im really pleased with the final design. - I created a few colour variations but I think that the blue/ purple is my favourite combination. It conveys the ‘transient state’ perfectly. Something especially surreal and dream like about these colours.
• Somehow I think the addition of the moon and colour really bring the bird murmuration to life. - added depth.
The Tales Of Beedle The Bard ✴ Re-imaging
‘The Tale of Two Brothers’ by J.K. Rowling. chosen three stories:
✴ The Tale of The Three Brothers
✴ The Warlocks Hairy Heart
✴ ???
✴ Aimed for these to become lino cut prints so I considered this in the sketchbook drawings by focusing on bold line for most of the drawings.
The Tale of The Three Brothers Unfortunately I didn't get to complete this brief, though as not for lack of wanting to. After I discovered I wouldn't be able to enter this for the mcmilllc book prize because of copy-write, It took a back seat. My favourite composition for this series is for the tale of three brothers in which I have illustrated my own version of ‘death’ I really looked forward to more visual metaphors in this scene - i had many ideas and would have loved to have seen this executed in lino cut! It is perhaps a personal project which I can return to at a later time.
The Warlocks Hairy Heart ✴ Although
the overall composition of this one didn't work out as planned, I liked some of the texture of ink - could try applying to piece with lino - combine the two together i think would be really interesting - reminds be of jims kay and his ability to join mix media

Chinese Mythology The story of Nian (uncompleted)
The brief Create a series of 4 double page spreads depicting the origin story of the Chinese new year. The central character of my story will be Nian* - the terrorising monster. I aim to illustrate the images through a combination of lino print and traditional Chinese ink. Aimed at both children & adults to enlighten them about ancient Chinese folklore. ‘*Nian - There is a story to explain why Chinese new year is celebrated with lots of noise. Once there was an ugly, scary monster called Nian who regularly came down from the mountains to hunt people. The villagers were so afraid of it that they locked themselves in their houses on the days it was coming. One wise old man in the village suggested it would be better if they stuck together and chased the monster away. So they did, with the noise of drums and fireworks. The monster was so surprised and afraid that it ran around until it was completely exhausted and the villagers were able to kill it. This is how the first Chinese New Year celebration started. The name of the monster, “Nian”, also means “year” in Chinese.’

experimentin g with ink its so freeing. its something that i have missed using and am keen on returning it back within my practice.
• Although id intended on an explosively lino series, I cant deny the success and enjoyment i’m getting out of the ink.
The ink is so in keeping with the chin ease them and i feel that it would be an interesting addition to some lino prints.
• Out of all of my briefs, I am the most disappointed that I didn't have the time to push this further. I desperately wanted to create a series of lino cut dragons but with the time scale i had left it was just impossible. Instead I focused my energy on something I could finish. - i didn’t want to rush the design as I think i would create my best response in lino.
• Despite not completing the project, I continued to be really inspired by the story and would like to illustrate it in the near future.
