STUDIO 805 X SOPHIE MCGARRY
One of the greatest Northern clubs in the late 80’s and 90’s was the Hacienda, located in the heart of Manchester. Drawing in crowds with live acts such as The Smiths, The Happy Mondays, New Order and The Stone Roses, clubbing was at its peak in a warehouse redesigned by Ben Kelly
THE HACIENDA
PETER SAVILLE
Born in Manchester, Saville was a partner in Factory Records and got to work closely with The Hacienda. Alongside this he designed many record sleeves for his company’s artists, most notably New Order and Joy Division. His work is a strong collection of geometric graphic designs, contrasting occasionally with historical ‘out of context’ artwork
COLOUR PALETTE
Choosing from the WGSN AW 16/17 colour trends, I was drawn to OffBeat. The condensed colours mixed with the tones of grey catches your attention without being completely overwhelming on the eye.
Inspired by the work of Saville, I focused heavily on lines and squares within my patterns.
PATTERN DEVELOPMENT
Keeping the pattern quiet enabled me to focus on matching the colours together, making something simple but effective. The real focus is how the pattern looks when scaled up or down.
T SHIRT DESIGNS
Taking further inspiration from the early 90’s, I chose to keep my designs slightly oversized. As all of these designs will be produced in a jersey fabric, they’ll hang effortlessly on the body.
