RE Training Series in the Automobile Industry One of the large German automobile manufacturers commissioned SOPHIST with the task of elaborating a series of trainings. The SOPHISTs were put in charge of not only developing the trainings, but also holding the same afterwards.
The challenge: In order to elicit, document and manage the complex requirements of the telematic domain, the customer has a defined RE process for the passenger car development department. It was the SOPHISTs’ task to illustrate and communicate this process to the stakeholders in a series of RE trainings. The training series was designed so as to not only expound the RE methodology currently in use by the customer, but - as explicitly demanded - also integrate the wellfounded knowledge of the SOPHISTs in the area of requirements engineering. Since a several hundred participants were scheduled to attend these trainings, various qualified trainers needed to be able to hold the trainings at short notice. Since the automobile manufacturer required not only in-depth knowledge of its internal processes, but placed great importance on the quality and experience of the trainers, the choice fell upon SOPHIST.

Customer benefit: ►► The SOPHISTs have elaborated a tailored RE-training series. ►► As part of the elaboration, the RE processes where documented and graphically illustrated, so as to facilitate the understanding of new employees for the processes in use. ►► With the SOPHISTs, a well-trained staff of trainers was present, which had both the necessary expertise as well as an in-depth knowledge of the customer’s processes. ►► Since SOPHIST was involved not only in the elaboration of the training, but in its execution, too, the participants gained greater knowledge than if they had just been explained the RE processes of the customer. As a result - thanks to SOPHIST - the participants in the trainings quickly became good requirements engineers.
Implementation: It was the first task of the SOPHISTs to document and review the customers RE process. The improvements made thereupon have been implemented by SOPHIST in a second project which ran in parallel. After the customer‘s processes had been viewed and documented, the SOPHISTs infused the trainings with their expertise in requirements engineering. Thus, the training provided the customer with a comparison between processes currently implemented and the standard process models generally used in requirements engineering.
